I agree about the temperament. We have a 97 pd. Bloodhound mix, and he isn't as active as our Cockapoo. But if you have a small house a small dog would be the best.

I do have a lab that likes to exercise, but is fine snuggling as well and is not fat. It depends on the temperament as well as the breed. If you can't exercise them well, do you have a fenced yard? Fetch is a wonderful tool in a fenced yard!

It is a wise person who recognizes their limits and you have stated yours clearly. It is better to get the right dog in the first place rather than having to give them up because you just can't do it. Kudos to you!!!! emoticon

Thanks. Yes, I have the impression that pit bulls can be very sweet. But I also hear they are very energetic and need lots of exercise... and I can't offer that because I have foot complaints. I'm also not totally confident I could train a strong 'fighting dog' properly and wouldn't want it to harm other dogs or people....
We had two dogs so far, they were small dogs, mongrels, part poodle. Our last dog probably was a mixture of poodle, tibetan terrier and shih-tzu... So, very different from a pitbull or even a lab or a golden retriever.

Pit Bulls can be a great companion dog. You just have to find the right one. Labs and Golden Retrievers a good dogs too. Hope you find a good dog!

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, I intend to keep the guinea pigs in a cage that sits on a low table, off of the floor.

Re: young animals: would be hard to get a young dog or a pup from the shelter here in my country. I just read that 80% of the dogs in the shelters here are pitbull type dogs. (Not that I would consider getting a pitbull, at least that would not be my first choice! I'd first go for a companion type dog - if they are around that is).

Goal for november: to avoid sugar & evening snacks.

The only way I ever would have animals of different species live together in harmony is that they start out young together. Both my daughters have had cats killed by rescue dogs and that was so sad.

If the Guinea Pigs are in a cage, it should be ok. Will you keep the cage somewhat high, and off of the floor? That would be better. I agree, it depends on the dog's temperament, but you can train your new dog to leave the cage alone. In general you should teach your dog the command "leave it", and that can include the cage.

I am considering getting two guinea pigs. I have always loved them.

But, we may also get a (rescued) dog some time in the future, maybe later this year or next year.

I'd like to hear if you've had experience with having both guinea pigs and a dog. Is there a reason why I shouldn't do this?
I used to have both and that went well, but I am not sure every dog would easily accept having guinea pigs in the same room (they'd be in a closed cage of course, so the dog would not have access).
