I have never heard of that breed of goat before. Thank you for enlightening us. Of course, I am a city girl, but my degree is in Animal Science so I have been around quite a few different animals and breeds. There are so many that I have never seen before, though. And a LOT I can't tell one from the other, especially nowadays when I have been away from school and stuff like that for so long.

In one group I am in on FB there are a lot of people who are believers that everyone should spay and neuter and no one should ever breed. They cannot understand that there are breeders who do it to improve the breed and to keep it going. They don't understand that the breed and dogs and cats in general would cease to exist if no one ever bred. They have attacked people who show dogs (in anything) as unfeeling, greedy people and will use one person as an example that all are that way. I've got news for them; I know the breeder/owner of the ACD BOB at Westminster this year and there is no way she is greedy and unfeeling. There was a picture of her from Westminster that she didn't know was being taken, sitting with her arm around her dog and him leaning into her with his face tilted up to hers. Just a perfect picture of their love. As for the people who said in that group that "those people just throw their dogs away," as they were saying, she kept her dog's father and grandfather their entire lives. The generalizations are definitely off base.

Darlene,
Your introduction to this topic is so important! That the spay and neuter options don't even appear on a list for animal welfare is an extremists' view and we know, all fundamentalists from any belief system are exaggerated to extremes that cannot make sense. Rational thinking and perspectives are just not possible in a well programmed fundamentalist. The most pious people I ever heard speak are truly global in thought and open minded. Fundamentalists get fanatical, like inbreeding.

How's THAT for a generalization... emoticon

Holly,
Thanks for motioning a big emoticon sign on opinions based on general impressions rather than accuracy. It was ignorant of the PETA group to picket those goats. I only learned about the breed a couple years ago by hanging out with that barn's farmers at our fair asking questions. Indeed, I asked to be educated about the different goats they were unloading. And I am a city girl.

As well, the idea that all Amish or all Muslims or all immigrants or all Afrians... well, really, that is ignorant opinion not accurately even possible. So thank you to everyone who posted on this thread. I find the ability to share in discussion with different perspectives to be the ONLY way we enlighten ourselves and move ourselves forward toward more beneficial GOOD.

PLEASE dont group all those of anything in one bundle. I live in a community where there are many Amish and they treat their animals well. There are no puppy mills, and the horses are well groomed and well fed as are the cows and domesticated house animals.
As with everything, there are bad and good..but I so hate to see an entire group of people being slammed due to some that SHOULD be slammed..but please bear in mind it isnt all of them.
As for PETA..i have lettle use for them. One year at our fair the 4-H goat barn was picketed..because the PETA people decided that the ears were docked off the La Mancha goats. LaManchas have what is called "gopher ears"...tiny little ones. noone docks them they are born that way.
The difference is, that PETA as a GROUP subscribes to their methods..the Amish do not.
Just my opinion...

You are right about that Jules!
I think the Amish, like many farmers regard animals as just a commodity, something either to be eaten by themselves or sold for profit. I don't believe they think of an animal has having a soul, therefore they are not worth worrying about.

No surprise for me at all about PETA, they are similar to the Amish. It's hard to imagine people who waffle on and on about animal welfare only to support the destruction of said animals.

The Amish are no better in the way they breed and keep animals. You'd think that such "God fearing" people would be a little more concerned with the day to day life of their animals than they do.

Sometimes people just make me shake my head, especially when I read all the terrible things that they can do and inflict on those that have no say in it at all. emoticon

You're right Darlene. There are always the proverbial ' bad apples ' in any group, but I really think many of the diferent activists have long since lost their perspective regarding the original purpose and intention of their particular organization and just everyone else with the dame undesirable brush.....

Kathy, that is awful. I know they turned them loose at Cheyenne one year and that is really close to a major highway. I think there might be some worry about the show here this weekend because they have a sign up that it is the AKC breeders that are causing all the deaths of dogs in shelters. They don't consider that people who don't take care of their dogs but put them in puppy mills and just breed hap-hazzardly that might have something to do with it and those who don't care who they sell their pups to. I'm not going to say that all AKC breeders are good (there was an ACD breeder that was really brutal that was closed down recently), but you can't blame all of them.

Quite honestly, I do not have anything good to say about PETA and their methods.

Too many times I've heard about some of their members letting dogs out of their crates at a dog show and chasing them off the property - sometimes even when there are major, busy roads / highways close by. This, all because in their minds a 'show' dog is always an abused dog, when the truth is more apt to be that they are far more likely to be treated like royalty as far as affection, feeding, grooming, etc. are concerned. An abused mentally or physically does NOT win in either the breed ( Conformation) or Obedience rings.

Some years ago, some what I would term as RABID PETA members were at a dog show, going around spraying paint all over any crated animals who did not have a human right beside them. Unfortunately one of the dogs they were "saving from the brutality of the dog show world" was the #1 Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) in Canada who was not just covered in green paint, but also had it sprayed right into his mouth and eyes.

He was not just never able to be shown again, but because of what PETA did to this defenceless little dog, after about a week of veterinarians doing everything they could, he had to be euthanized. The paint blinded him, and got into his lungs, damaging them to the point there was no hope for recovery. This boy was one of the sweetest fellows out there, and to be tortured like that under the guise of an animal rights group claiming to be acting in the best interest of the animal..... Well let's just say I still get upset thinking about even after all this time. He was young, only about 2 years old.

Sorry, guys, the rant is over for now.

The thing is they make people think, like this lady did, that they are doing all the good that they keep saying they are. If thing are like are reported they are actually against the life of any animal and they are duping people into believing otherwise.

I've always heard negative things about how PETA goes about trying to achieve their goals, but that just makes me sick.

I wish it were a better world than one where people act in this manner. It is getting better though.

I have read a lot of different things on PETA and a couple of the other Animal Rights groups. I just read this article that gives information from a former employee. It is a warning to be very careful where you might take your pets to be rehomed. Problem is, the group that says spay & neuter was not even doing that.
