I do some pet sitting and agree that you can exercise anywhere. If the dogs stop to sniff do some lunges or squats or jumps or push-ups, when they run, run with them. You can decide where to go so you can do some uphill walking. Also keep in mind that some dogs are not used to much exercise so you need to condition them very gradually. Make it fun and don't push them too hard.
If you are petsitting dogs in their home you may be able to run around with them in the yard or run up and down stairs in the house. If necessary bring a ball or squeaky toy to engage the dogs in play. For older pets that just want companionship you can alternate petting with quiet exercise on the floor like pilates.

How about exercising in the home where you're sitting? If you have a laptop, and the home has wifi, ask the owners if you can tap into their Internet and pull up some SP videos for exercising in an office or home. Hope you find an answer that works for you. emoticon -- Lou

I exercise and pet sit. I have been lucky. The dogs that I walk enjoy walking and do not stop often. Plus I play ball for 15 to 20 mins. before walking. We also have dogs of our own, and they get a good walk in the morning. I will only take care of a pet within 5 miles of my home. That way I don't spend a lot of time in the car. I also get in some dancing at night for my cardio. Or find an exercise on you tube. Paul Eugene makes exercise fun. Check it out.

A dog wags his tail with his heart.

May I always be the kind of person that my dog thinks I am.

No. We don't have any dog parks like that in my area.

Do you have dog parks where you live? If so, pick up a few of the dogs you take care of and take them to the dog park. Dogs are social animals so they love dog parks. This way you can walk fast without starting and stopping and the dogs can stop and sniff then run to catch up with you. Take a chuck it and have the dogs run after balls. Throw in front of you that way you can keep walking and if they leave it you can walk and pick it up. This also frees up some time for you by taking care of several dogs at one time. It works at our dog park, but ours is like 80 acres.

In March, 2014, I retired from the corporate world after 32 years and in August, 2014, I started my own pet sitting business where I care of pets in clients homes. Are there any other pet sitters in Sparkpeople land? I'm having a hard time fitting regular exercise in when I'm working (or as my husband says....."working" as he makes quote marks in the air with his fingers...LOL). I walk dogs sometimes, but not all walk great...there is a lot of stopping and starting. I wasn't busy these last few weeks and got some good walks in on my own time. When I'm pet sitting I spend time in the car and then time taking care of pets. I thought it would be easy to fit time in to exercise, but it's really not.

Taking it one step at a time.
