If you have the time and patience to go looking, we had a thread going 2 or 3 (??) years ago about baking treats for the dogs. They were all full of safe ingredients.

One recipe that we tried out ourselves my DH thought were one of the best homemade cookies he'd ever tasted. He scarfed back about 1/2 dozen before we knew it and told him they were for the dogs.... and had pumpkin in them - one of the foods he really, really hates. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Thanks for the tip on onions - didn't know that. Will be sure I double check ingredients for acceptability before I make anything.

Yeah, I have a book of dog biscuit recipes and it turns out most of them have onion in them. It is the book that came with the biscuit cutter.

What's a good source of recipes for making your own dog treats and cakes? I've been thinking of trying it for Sadie.

I was thinking yesterday that I might try to make a cake like was in one of the books I read for Cassie. Maybe Orzo could have a little of it, too. I know I can't use all the meats in it, but maybe can do some ground turkey or ground chicken and the cream cheese frosting to make one. Or whatever ground meat I can find on sale cheap.

Sarge, Alice, and Munchie are getting new squeeky toys.
Henley isn't into the toys, but he does need a new long lead.
Also we will be baking Christmas cookies for all of the dogs.

Holly, will she play by herself? Bridgitte use to throw her Kong in the air herself if I wasn't around to throw it. Then catch it, of course. If your dog will do things like that maybe a Jolly Ball would work. Or if she would shove a ball around like my Dachshund did. She looked like she was playing soccer. Then there are those ones they have to work to get food out of, either the puzzle ones or ones where the food comes out of various holes in a cube. Can't remember the name of that cube that I had for Blue and Venture, but it was large with one hole in one side that you filll with food and the dog had to figure out how to get the food out of it.

yes thats it. Lucy is smarter than a whip..and gets bored easily. I'm pretty crippled and can only walk..we go for 3 walks a day doing a total of 4-5 miles...but its not enough for her..and i'm fat and slow so she has to plod with me (not a bad thing since she has a severe cardiac problem but still...) i'd love to find something that would keep her occupied....i have deer antlers on the way but no clue when. she could have a raw femur bone but the local butcher doesnt get them (grrr!!) and i dont think i could deal with the smell of a bully stick.....

Are the puzzles those things they put food/treats in and the dog will somehow open the compartments to get the treats? I have thought about something like that for Cassie so that she might get to playing with something. I got a ball you can fill with treats for her, but the treats won't come out so she doesn't do anything with it.

I'd also like to get one of those things for the cat where the mouse runs around and back and forth under something so the cat chases it. I think since Orzo likes to play with things that would be something he'd like.

Annie got over her destructive period, but I remember walking into the dining room one time and she was laying there taking all the stuffing out of her stuffed man and throwing it all over the room. I hadn't seen what she was doing at first and couldn't figure out where all that "snow" was coming from. I'm glad none of my dogs tried to eat anything (other than the furniture and remote on the massage chair).

Pookie loved her squeaky toys as well, she sometimes tore them apart, but never tried to eat the squeaky part, she just wanted us to make the noise for her. She got an indestructible santa one year from my grandma, the only thing left after a week was the middle of it with most of the santa suit still attached.

I have to buy Zoey the "unstuffed" toys because the first thing she does with the regular ones is pull all the stuffing out!! She also takes any squeakers out first thing. I have to make sure I'm there to get them so she won't swallow it.

Went ahead and bought her a new red fur coat yesterday. So cute!

Venture was the only dog I had who wouldn't destroy toys fairly soon, other than maybe Doxie. He was totally gentle with stuffed toys. Rubber or plastic toys were something to destroy, though. Bridgitte's were the black Kongs, size large. and it took her just a few minutes to a couple hours to get the top part off. First time I saw that I thought she's put it in front of the lawn mower.

Sadie is only two - so she still goes through her toys pretty fast, even those "tuff" toys. But she has so much fun and my bf black lab will take her toys and get her to chase him for them. They are adorable to watch together. Really glad to see I am not the only one going broke on dog toys. emoticon

We used to buy a couple of those doggy stockings that were filled with toys when we had more dogs, but now that we only have the 3, it's mostly just a couple of home baked treats per dog.

We'll do a check of all the current toys in the bin, replace any that are past their prime and give out the new toys at Christmas if we need to buy any.

My previous dogs always got toys and treats. Blue and Patty didn't play with anything, and I thought Venture would be that way, too, but he decided he liked stuffed animals, so he always got one of them. Blue got a treat toy. Bridgitte always got Kongs and took the heads of them. Annie got soft frisbies or stuffed toys with squeakers (the stuffed with squeakers she would take the stuffing out and throw it around the living room when she was younger). Can't really remember Doxie's and I don't think Ben played with anything. Ben just liked to run after Annie when she was playing fetch. Now it is only the cat that gets toys because he will play with them. Everybody had their stockings, though, even Fancy has had one filled with carrots and an apple or horse candy.

Last year I went to Tractor Supply and got Lucy an "indestructable" kong rope toy, a frisbee, and a goose stuffy.
I wrapped them up....she took great delight in shredding the paper, then shredding each toy..hahahah..including the indestructable rope toy. that one took her all of about 7 minutes to totally annihilate. but she had a blast doing it..and i was giggling and taking movies of it...so it was a win win all the way around!

Since Cassie doesn't play with anything she will get treats. Maybe I will try making her a "Good Dog Cake" like they had in a mystery book I read (it has a lot of recipes in the book as all the books in the series). The cake she made had 3 kinds of ground meat and frosting made from cream cheese. I can't remember if there was anything else, though.

The biggest gift for my dogs is extra time with them. We go for several hours-long walks, spend lots of time at the park and the dog park to play, cuddle up on the couch to nap/watch movies. I used to spend money on toys but now just provide cardboard tubes, tennis balls, things to chew and they could not be any happier.
My dogs rarely need to wear collars and leashes because we live in the country.
I have bought a new, very well-cushioned bed for one of my old dogs.
