Our health system here in Canada is probably similar to the one in Australia and I know our blood sugars get tested regularly. Especially hubby's and he is always considered prediabetic also because his mother had diabetes. I once had our dog Otto checked because he seemed so thirsty all the time but he was okay too.

Jules,
you are so right that we are responsible for our own health. Doctors can help but nobody can be responsible for us and nobody knows our bodies as well as we do.

Because we have a different health system to the US here in Australia, blood tests for various things are done usually automatically with others. Whenever I have a cholesterol test the doctors always do a blood glucose level as well as various other tests as well. It's like going to the doctor and making sure you get the general things like BP etc done and most importantly knowing what it is or what the results are. You are, after all, responsible for your own health, the doctors rarely tell you anything unless you ask.

Peace and long life - Jules

emoticon I have an A1C done every 6 months. I agree that it's an important test and can help a person make better decisions in carb intake.

I don't usually share topics on this team that are not related to dogs but this one is very close to my heart from personal experience and I wanted to include all my fellow dog lovers.
I started a topic on testing blood sugars through the A1c test on the messageboards because most people who are pre-diabetic or diabetic have no idea, in particular people who are normal weight or children. One simple inexpensive test can prevent major complication from diabetes later in life. Please feel free to read and share your experience, and yes, this info may apply to your dogs as well as dogs suffer from diabetes-related obesity and many other diseases just as much as people.
