Typically when a new furry family member comes to live with us, we wait a week or 2 to watch them closely to give them a name that will fit their personality/behavior.

Bismarck was the first pet where we didn't follow that .... I came up with a list of about 6 possibilities & Biz' name was actually arrived at through a vote of family, friends, and even my co*workers of the time.

Our cat, Casanova, came to us as an adult & already named but it definitely suits him!

I have two goldendoodles.

One is Skyla. I didn't realize until she was about 3 months old that her name was SKYla and her first leash and collar was a sky scene with the moon and stars.

My other dog is Keola. She is only 2, but she has very bad hip dysplasia. Keola is a Hawaiian name that means "The life, the health, the well-being" which we hope will bring her luck. When we rescued her, her name was something else that we didn't like, so we changed it. She was used to her new name within a week, and now she doesn't even look up if her old name is called.

My Boxer, Draco, was named after the dragon from the movie "First Night". I just liked the name (I also named his daughter Sapphira after the dragon in "Eragon"). My German Shepherd, Hawkeye, is named after the my boyfriends favorite team, Iowa Hawkeyes. Plus he's mostly black and their colors are black and gold.

Love reading the stories about everyone's dogs! When our dog was given to us, he was already named and he knew his name so we kept it. It is CP. I was told it is a combination of his mother's and father's name. One was Cotton and the other was Presley.

I had another dog that we recently had to put to sleep. He was Mr. Brown Dog. He came to live with us because he was mistreated by the family that had him across the street. They never named him and we did not think he would stick around so we just called him Brown Dog. He decided he liked us and was responding to the "brown dog" name so we added the "Mr." We had him about 10 years.

The very first dog I ever had was a dalmation and I named him Mr. Clean (after the cleaning products). I think I was about 3 years old and apparently liked the commercials.

my perfect puppy is Missy and she has a personality all her own, she is a purebred staffy and 1 of 3 born to my mums two dogs (mack and Keisha) we decided nicknames would be best so we didn't get attached. Boof, lil boof and little miss. she was so small keisha had trouble giving birth and little miss was almost lost, she was the runt of the litter and everything she did was adorable, being unemployed at the time, it was my job to look after them especially at night since Missy could not feed on her own she didn't have the strength or energy. it was only a matter of time before i was attached, so beg my partner we had to keep her. we started to brain storm a new name for her but my sister would not allow a change in her name so it has always been Missy and she is the light of my life, everyday she makes me smile.

I have three pups. Here are their names and why:

Addison (Addie): We got her when she was three months old. We're Cubs fans and so she was named after one of the streets to Wrigley Field. We tried many other names, but when the hubs jokingly said "Addison" it seemed to fit. We bought her before we knew where pet stores get their puppies and what puppy mills were. If you don't know, please google puppy mills to find out the horror of what Addie's parents live through. Even though she was taken out of there at a young age, she does have issues from being born in one of these awful places. I think about her parents daily and wonder if they still suffer. It makes me so sad.

Mia: She came from a home that no longer wanted her (at least the husband didn't) at five months old. Her name was already Mia and it just seemed to fit her. We also call her the Mianator. She's a shy girly (and possibly not treated kindly in her old home), so we gave her a tough nickname.

Danaerys (Dany): Puppy mill survivor. We adopted her when she was seven years old. Her name at the shelter was Amanda, but it didn't fit and she didn't respond to it. Danaerys is a character from a book series we both love-she is a character who is taken advantage of but eventually comes into her own. Seemed fitting and Dany loves her new name!

Interesting tidbit: Addie and Mia were born exactly one week apart. They are from completely different places and one is a yorkie, the other a chihuahua.

Well this is my first post and of course its about my dog HAHA my boyfriend just shakes his head...anyways my dog's name is FREYA...she is a beautiful 7 year old chocolate lab. I was in college when I first decided to get a dog. My roommate at the time had a 2 year old black lab named Odin...Odin was huge and what better than for him to have a lil sister. When I finally decided on a lab puppy I did some research into the Greek and Celtic mythology. I found out that Freya is Odin's little sister...PERFECT!!!! When I went to pick up my lil bundle she was only 4 weeks old and fit in the palm of my hand...I called her Freya about 10 times in a row and she seemed to settle right into it. I look back and think...what a perfect name for her, she doesn't need anything else...except for fat dog once in a while *blush*

Kirby was so named because that was the street that the shelter found him on as a stray. I wasn't supposed to know that, since it was on the intake papers. but, i figured since i was a volunteer with the shelter at the time, i had a right to know something about this wonderful 2 year old guy (at that time). Come to find out from my DH that Kirby is the name of a vaccumn. WELL...............that fits my baby boy also. LOL. His nickname is "kirbiznikov" for his favorite pose. LMAO

Ziggy is the dog we adopted Jan '11 because we had been fostering her since Sept '10 under the name Missy. Missy's owner died, she went to one foster home for a couple of months, then another foster home (down the street from me and DH) for just about 1 month. that foster mom wasn't able to walk Missy, because she is a beagle mix and LOVES to sniff everything. DH and I weren't fond of her for the first 2-3 months of fostering, but with daily walks and having a routine (of sorts), she is calmer and her wonderful personality came through. now, Ziggy (because she likes to zig and zag on walks) LOVES playing with DH and they are best friends. Her nickname is "bazinga" because it fits her and DH and I like the show "the big bang theory".

I went to pick up our baby on my own and as soon as I walked in the house with the 6 *oz* bundle of love my husband looked up and said we HAVE to name him Button...he sure is cute as one! The rest is history.

When I adopted my dog from the Humane Society his name was Carter. He did not know his name and he is really not a Carter. I am a Battlestar Galactica fan so I named him Boomer after Lieutenant Boomer on the original series. The name fits like a glove.

From the shelter, our dog was named Angus. Blech!!! So we immediately renamed him Syd, for Syd Barrett. My husband and I are both devout Pink Floyd fans, so it was appropriate. He chose the name for this dog, I already have the next name picked if we get another!

Our Granddog, who lives with us, is named - FINCH. For Atticus Finch from the book, "To Kill A Mockingbird". Named by our daughter...an English major with aspirations of Law School one day.
So,he's in good company with Shawna having named SCOUT ,from the same book. emoticon emoticon

My Husky/Shepherd is named GIN. Doesn't sound much like a Husky name until you know the reason behind it.
My daughter has the sister to Gin. Her dog is solid white and Gin has the husky coloring. My grandson thought they should have names that "matched" therefore; COTTON & GIN was his choice. Now he has a "cottongin" in the family. From the mouths of babes come the best ideas. emoticon

For one of my two dogs, Elvis, there isn't much of a story behind his name. My family got him at a pet store and we were trying to think of a name. My mom suggested Elvis, and it just stuck. As for the other dog, Tootsie, my dad named her. She's brown, like a Tootsie Roll. :P

One of my dogs is Thumper, a Shepherd. When she showed up as a stray several years ago and no one responded to ads or fliers and she didn't have a tag on her collar or a microchip, I kept her as company to another stray, a Boxer named Baby.

Trying to name the Shepherd, I kept hearing her long tail thumping against walls, cabinets, doors, etc., so I named her Thumper. Two days later I had an appointment at the vet's to look at Thumper's infected leg. I specifically told them she was a dog, yet five minutes before I was to leave the next day to take her in the office called to cancel the appointment saying Dr. Kole didn't work with rabbits. emoticon I reminded them that she was a dog and they would see why I named her Thumper. As soon as they all started petting her that tail started banging against the wall -- thump, thump, thump -- and they then understood. -- Lou

My brindle and white Boston Terrier mix is named Rosto. Rosto was given to me by a former boss on Good Friday. I wanted an unusual name. I got the name from a book I was reading. Bloodhound by Tamara Pierce has the character named Rosto the Piper -King of the Rogues. I really liked the sound and it looked like my puppy. Rosto looks like a mini-Pitt Bull Terrier. I also looked it up and Rosto is Portuguese for face, so it's doubly suited for him.

My other baby is a cream colored Pomeranian. I work in a library and a patron offered to give me a puppy along with his AKC papers. So, I kind of sprung him on my husband, as in came home from work with him without asking. My husband wasn't to keen on another dog in the house! So, we were talking over name possibilites, and Lance said how about Emmett. We like to name our animals people names. So it stuck! Plus, his temperment reminds me of Emmett Cullen of the Twilight book series. His registered name is probably going to be Emmett to the Limit. He's a hyper little fellow who thinks he can fight bears. LOL. If you guys can come up with a better registration name please let me know!

Oh how fun!

We got Sid, our big yellow hound mix from a swap meet & the people there didn't know how old he was, but THOUGHT he was 8 weeks. He wasn't. He was so teeny-tiny that we decided to give him a big, tough name! So we named him after Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols. Of course he began to grow & grow and is now 80+ pounds! His complete name is
Sidney Marie Spongecake Duchamps Vicious Solomon.
(Spongecake is for his color, I'm not sure how Marcel Duchamps ended up in there, but he did!)

Buster is our beagle. We found him on our road skinny and tick-covered, and without a chip. We had a houseful at the time, and the last thing we needed was another dog, So I told him, "You better be good, Buster!" and it stuck. He is
Buster Boodle Solomon

We set out specifically to get a Border Collie, and I wanted an ethnically correct name for her. I saw her and she was just a Fiona. Most of our animals have the middle name Marie because my daughter thought that was everyone's middle name when she was little. Fiona got my other daughter's middle name to try and balance things out a bit.
Fiona Rose Solomon

There's a story behind both of my dog's names.

Frasier: the TV show was extremely popular when I got him and I thought it was appropriate since his breed comes from Germany.

Scout: I really wanted to name him Niles but I thought that would be too cutesy. I decided on Scout after "To Kill A Mockingbird".

I like this topic, my two fur babies that crossed rainbow bridge some time ago where
Chips - named by our grandson after the Cop show CHIPS she charged like the cycles he said
Bandit - my beloved Husky his face looked like he wore a mask like bandits do and stole every right shoe in the house.
My three furbabies ruling the house right now
Maxie - was actually supposed to be Max until we found out she was a girl, LOL she looked mighty and strong.
Barney - our goofy Chocolate lab, was supposed to be Sally until my husband got to the Airport in PA to return to CO with the puppy he bonded with and found out his sister put the wrong pup into the carrier, what a blessing for us but we did not have a name and Barney popped into my husbands head the name of a dog he had in his past and lost at a young age.
Bear - our youngest sweet boy, he give actual bear hugs and earned his name that way

What a great topic!

My three...

Mac - My Cairn's full name is MacTavish. Half of my family is from Scotland which is why I was interested in the breed in the first place, and I like the name Tommy. "MacTavish" can be translated to Thomas.

Sui - I loved LOVED Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter. I watched his show all the time while I was in college. My second dog was a rescue, literally found on the streets in my college town when she wasn't more than 6 weeks old. The Croc Hunter's dog was named Sui, and so I adopted it and her!

Gus - My favorite composer is Gustav Mahler, and I decided to use a variation of his name somehow for the next dog I got. When I saw my third dog, and we bonded almost immediately, I knew he was a Gus.

I was playing with different names in my mind before I went to get my new puppy.

After I picked him up, we were driving in the car, and he kept making little puppy growls, and "talking".

I decided to call him Rex, cus he growled like a little dinosaur

We have Shiroi Hanabi, but we just call him Shiro. He's a Japanese Akita and my brother was on his third year of studying Japanese in college so I called him to get help naming our new pup. We had thought we'd named him "White Angel", but, as fate would have it, his name means "White Firework" which is way more appropriate, anyway. We bought him while we were living in Ireland and his IKC registered name is "Draco" after the Harry Potter Draco Malfoy. Thankfully, that doesn't fit him at all!

Our other sweetie is Claude, again we named him for his breed, he's a Papillon. I had gone through a bought of insanity where I wanted a 4th child and my husband sagely suggested a lap dog instead. We chose a Papillon in part because they're known for thinking they're large dogs, and that's entirely true of Claude. Shiro may be 100lbs and he may only be 10lbs, but in his mind they're equals.

Bruno came with his name and it sort of suits him he also gets called Brunie Prunie.

Ladybird was the only one we named and she got her name because of her spots.

Maggs was Maggie but I shortened her name so it was similar but still a new name for a new house, she also gets called Magget, which everybody from the vet on down just love.

I think Murphy fits. He is adorable.

Sarge got his name because I like Military history. At first I said Sargent, but that didn't fit, so my Hubby said how bout Sarge.

Alice, my Daughter named her.

Henley. I was looking for a good Irish name. Henley means "dweller of the high fields", We live in the high desert, so I thought close enough.

Munchie, got his name because he was always lightly munching on your hand. He still does.

I haven't had a puppy in years, so all my "mature" rescue doggies came with names already given to them. Currently we have Mona, a Rottweiler mix, and Oliver, my elderly Pug. Their names fit their personalities. Mona is a very sweet, devoted girl, and Oliver is an aging imp, still likes to pee where he wants.

Phoenix - is named that for Fawkes the Phoenix in Harry Potter. Phoenix registered name is "Harvesthil (the breeders kennel name) Spirited Phoenix", and that just really suites him.

Arwen - is named for the elven princess in Lord of the Rings. Arwen's registered name is "Highlandblue (the breeders kennel name) Dreamalong (my parents kennel name) Esprit (French for Spirit".

Everything my parents have kept in the breeding program the last 10 or so years, has had some form of "spirit" in their registered names.

Brinx - came to us a "puppy puppy" and we changed his name (when they gave him to us), and the joke around the house is he pushed my old girl Maggie over the brink and killed her (she was old and very frail, and he actually wasn't allowed with her), and was trying to do the same with the other dogs, so Brinx became his name.

My first, a dachshund, I just called Doxie (I was 10). My father named her Schoenes Girl (beautiful girl) for her papers.

A friend gave me my 2nd dog and my first ACD. She was born outside and lived outside until I got her, so I had put her in the back yard while I was at work. On the way home I was thinking of a name, not liking the Lolly they called her. I decided to name her Holly, but when I got home and found her with my parents I was informed her name was Bridgitte. They had been watching a movie with Bridget Bardot (don't know spelling of any of it, consequently the weird spelling of Bridgitte's name) and named my puppy after her. Oh, the time outside lasted about an hour since she went over to the bedroom window and started yelping non-stop until Mom told Dad to let her in. And I was trying to think of how I could convince them to let me keep her. On my way home I pictured her sitting on my mom's feet while she made pie and that is exactly where she was when I got home.

Annie was named by her breeder and since she knew her name I left it what Pam had named her. Ben was a rescue who also already had a name, but I had to shorten it because it was too confusing with Annie.

Annie's pups were named by me. Patty got her name because I was looking at them one day and while she looked back at me I distinctly heard "I'm Patty, and I'm yours" and my friend chose her sister as the pup she wanted. Trying to figure a name for the papers with Patty in it I named her after a funny western song called Cow Patty.

Venture got his name because I was watching him and thought maybe I could show him and thought "Nothing ventured, nothing gained." That wasn't too great for his papers, so he got Hard Yakka (work, from Australian Aborigine, I think) Adventure. Unfortunately, he was not a good show prospect because of fear aggression.

Blue was going to go to a new home in Oklahoma, but the guy decided before I got there that he didn't want him because he wasn't breeding quality. Just as well, because Blue doesn't like to herd. I just decided to call him "Little Boy Blue" from the nursery rhyme cause I couldn't think of any more names.

My first dog came from my uncle who had taken in a severely abused dog, who was left to fend for herself. He found out that Honda was pregnant.(for at least the 7th time that he knew of, the rest of her litters were all drowned by the owner.) My uncle got her right after she had been left out in 23 below weather that winter. She had a litter of 11. The day I went to bring home the pup I chose there had been a huge thunderstorm. When the rain let up, I went and got her. When I came home , there was a huge double rainbow over my house and on the back of her neck was a white spot that looked like a cloud with a lightning bolt going into it. So I say God named her - Rainbow !!!!! She was a black and white lab/shepherd mix.

Zac (actually his name was Zachary something, something , he was a registered Pomeranian, but I never got his papers) His previous owner worked in a nursing home and abused him severely. He was to the point the vet didn't think he would make it.He spent most of the time locked in a cage in his own waste and fed in there. If he was out, he was beat and kicked. When I got him, he was terrified to come out of the cage to do anything even eat. I will not keep a dog in a cage(my personal opinion, not meaning to start a war here), and after a couple of days, he was out and I quickly got rid of the cage.

Brownie - came with the name when I took him from the neighbors. I couldn't stand him not being fed or watered, and on a small chain. I use to go over at night and feed him and give him water. But with me being handicapped it was getting too hard to go up and down the hill where he was, especially in the winter. IN the summer, if his chain knocked over the water, they wouldn't take him more. Said it will teach him to be careful next time. I finally got tired of reminding the parents and kids to take care of him, so one day i just walked over there, unchained him and brought him and his dog house over. Yes, they were home.
They never said a word about it, never asked me why, nothing...I gave them the dog house back..their next dog needed it, POOR THING( SLICK)...he is still suffering till this day over there. He is all skin and bones like Brownie was. BUT the 2 they have in the house, well they are well fed, and taken to the vets. Slicky has never seen a vet, even for big cuts or fly bitten ears.I usually do something to take care of them with salve and stuff.

When I took Brownie, he would of made a greyhound look fat!!!! Today he is 86 lbs. and I call him my little pony...he is a big tall dog! The kids told me one day...boy he got big..I said "That's because he is getting fed!" That was the end of that.

I will take each day as it comes.
As my grandfather always told me.."Don't ever get old,it's a ..." I should have listened to him!!
I love my furbabies!

Hi Beach Bum... welcome!

Someone at the animal rescue org dubbed my dog "Jeeter." The tag line in their advertisement was "This handsome fellow will give you the jeeters." I think they meant "jitters." We didn't mind the name and he listened to it, so it stuck. However, my husband is an Oakland A's fan, and he refuses to spell it with a "J" ... doesn't want a dog named after a Yankee. He spells it with a "G."

Hi guys. first I wanted to say hello. I'm new... not only to this group but to SparkPeople in general. I have an amazing 4 year old German shepherd who I love very much. Long story behind getting the dog but his name is another story. My husband and I could not think of good names for the life of us. Everything we liked someone else we know had used so we didn't want to use the same name.
About 2 weeks after we got my puppy my husband was outside doing yard work and I was in and out of the house doing random things. My husband had mentioned that he hadn't seen the puppy in a while and a frantic search started. Turns out the puppy had jumped up into the wheelbarrow and laid down to take a nap. The wheelbarrow came from Ace Hardware and had Ace printed all over it. I thought what a perfect name ... Ace. Sad to think my dog was named after a wheelbarrow but I love the name.

Riptyde was named by his first mommy who named all her dogs after weather or natural events
When we adopted Baby, we renamed her Caity because it sounded like Baby and was very cute likes she is.
Raymee was named by the rescue shelter and we kept his name in case anyone wanted to track down what happened to him.

Your naming stories are adorable!

When I got my Yorkie, he was so small, so he became Sir Titan of York. He thinks he's a big dog in a little body. Titan means big..

No special reason for my dogs names. Dominic looked like a regal Italian dog, so that's how he got his name. I have no idea how we came up with Vic. It just went with Dom.

My DH named Nickie as he loved that name. Jacob came to us with that name. Teddy Bear I named as that is what he is a little Teddy Bear. Just a very calm and relaxed boy. My DH named Missy because he liked the name but I have always said she should have been named Sassy as she is a very sassy girl.Teddy and Missy are in my profile pic.

Yeah... they were the names they came to us with emoticon Blue because he had blue eyes (now they're amber) and Samantha because... who knows.... common name for a shepherd

My ex names his dogs after Beatles songs... hence the name Lucy (Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds) and Abbey (Abbey Road) -- coincidentally a white boxer

Or sports... hence the name Buckeye, for the Ohio Buckeyes.

One of these days maybe I'll get to pick the name myself! LOL

My boyfriend got me my boxer for my birthday in 2009, right after we bought our first home. I told him in our search for a home that I absolutely had to have a house dog. My parents were against having a dog in the house when I was growing up.

The breeders he got our dog from was the parents of a friend of ours. They asked him what we planned to name our dog, because they like to start using names before they're ready to go home if possible. So my boyfriend thought about it for a bit and as he was driving home one day, the band Dropkick Murphys was playing in the car. That's when he decided to go with the name Murphy.

I had a little get together on my birthday with some close friends and family. I opened up the card my boyfriend had got me, and the front of it said "Congratulations on your new baby boy!". You should have seen the confusion on my face. I opened the card and in it was a picture of a boxer pup wearing a bow! He was too young to come home yet.

My friend (the daughter of the breeders) said, "I hope you're okay with the name Murphy because that's what he picked. I tried to talk him out of it." Considering my boyfriend and I first bonded over a shared interest in the same style of music, I thought it was perfect!
