Reese was a rescue, but we got him when he was only 8 weeks old (had been taken away from his mama when he was only 3 weeks!!). The rescue had named him and his sibblings after superheros. He was knowns as Peter Parker, aka Spiderman. The girl that was fostering him was calling him Eddie. Initially we had wanted to call him Walker, but finally decided on Reese. So glad we did. It fits his personality perfectly!

I did change his name. I have a hungarian hound that the former owners named Smokey. It totally didn't fit him, besides I have a horse named Smokey. (Changed his name as well, His former name was Speedy.) I renamed him Charley B. Barkin off of All Dogs Go To Heaven. He looks like Charlie off of there and it totally fits him. One of my friends got a basset hound and named him Itchy, hehe.
When I got Charley he was a year and didn't know anything, He wasn't even potty trained. I resqued him because his former owner had him, a couple pits, boxer, and two mix breeds. They only feed them enough for two dogs and only the boxer was fixed. Well, the female pit was in heat and Charley and the male got into over her and he got the bajeezies tore out of him. I didn't find out about this til a week after and the side Charley's face was like the size of a large grapefriut. i told them they need to take him to the vet or he is only going to get worse. He said no I'm just plannin on shutting him. I said no, grabbed a leash and took him to a vet. His cut was so bad that there were maggots in it so deep I didn't even know. He got nearly 50 stitches and a hefty vet bill later he became my dog, my work partner (I'm a dog trainer) and is the smartest dog I know.

Now ask yourself are there really things that go bump in the night
Or are we taught as children to have fright for things that might
Live or breath or might not even exist
Cause fear is a son of a bitch of man's myths
And his job is keeping the urban legends alive
By telling stories and enhancing em with devilish lies
So stay afraid of the many beings and strange things
That will live forever in folklore and remain to be seen

We got our dog from a family nearby where we live who could no longer keep her... They gave her the name Kitty!!!! As much as kitty is a "cute" name, I didn't really find it fit for her, so needless to say we renamed her. I still keep contact with that family from time to time just to update them and use her former name out of respect, but outside of that we use her new name.

We decided to name her Leia, after the princess in Star Wars (my husband likes SW not me, but I love the name!). She has a lot of nicknames too, such as Duppy and Princess Duppins LOL! She knows whenever we talk to her because of the pitches in our voice when we do. :P I love my little gal.

I have an adorable pit mix that I adopted from the Humane Society when he was six months old. His name was Carter. I hated that name, and he did not know his name anyway, so I named him Boomer.

Yes we got Rocky in Dec. 2010, he was free to good home, his name was originally Rocco, and I think he only knew spanish. We found out why he was free since then, he has some issues like eating the pot roast thawing on the counter last week and using the furniture as
chew toys, but when he lays down next to me hogging my pillow at night, all I see is an angel, LOL, gotta luv him emoticon

We considered renaming Carl but decided that his name completely fit him. He has many nicknames but the ones we use most are Carl Pants and Carl Monster (this applies when we are sitting on the floor putting on our shoes for a walk and he jumps all around us and happily snorts puffs his cheeks-he looks like a little monster).

Our 2 yr old beagle mix was Missy when we were fostering her . we changed her name to Ziggy. much better fit for a name for her, since she zigs and zags all over the place. LOL
When we adopted our now 5 yr old boxer mix, he was a stray at the shelter for 3 months. so, we named him Kirby since that was the street he was found on. (we weren't supposed to look at the intake papers, but I had to know where he was found). LOL

Wow I guess I'm in the minority here, but I kept Shimmer's name when I got her from the shelter. It fit her and I figured it might make the transition easier for her if she didn't have to figure out what I was calling her, since she already knew her name was Shimmer. She still knows it but responds to Baby, Shimtastic, and a whole host of nicknames we've come up with for her.

One of our dogs was named Chino. We decided to rename him Cheeto since he is a little orange (well, tan haha)! He responded immediately since the names are so similar. Our second dog is named Sophie. We kept it the same, but I actually think the Humane Society had renamed her because she didn't know her name for a little bit. Then of course they respond to the little nicknames I've given them over time :)

Rex didn't have a name when I got him, so that wasn't changed.

A few years ago though, I had a pomeranian pup. The breeder originally wanted to call him Boots, because of his little white paws, but one of my best friends already had a dog named boots, so I didn't really like that. So I brainstormed shoe brands, and eventually thought of Aesics, which I then shortened to Ace. He was all black (except his paws) so I figured that suited him - my little Ace of Spades.

I have had two shelter dogs in the past. I did not re-name either of them. The first one, Lady, was a bit older when we got her. Well she was only 3 but a stressful life made her a much older dog, she only lived 6 years. When we got her we were working so hard on bringing her out of her shell that we kept her name because she was familiar with it.
Our new puppy was already named Moonshine at the shelter. We decided to keep this name because it was fun and it really fits her personality. She's a little crazy!

I have always "inherited" dogs. Our very first dog was Max, but my parents bought her, so they named her that.

After my parents divorced, we got another dog (from a friend, who could no longer keep her) named Tailor Made. She was a real sweetie. After she passed away, a year or so later we got Laila (also gotten from a family friend. we kept her name).

After my dad passed away I unfortunately had to leave Laila with my stepmom ):

I just adopted my first puppy from a rescue (Star Paws Rescue) about a month or so ago. Her name is Libby, we kept her name as well. We also call her Libbs, Libbsters, and my mom calls her "Puppylicious." HAHA

Munchie had another name, but it didn't fit him at all. He was 6 months, and would lightly chew on our hand, so we re-named him Munchie.

Sarge I adopted at the animal shelter when he was 6 months. They didn't have a name for him. So we named him Sarge. I just can't imagine someone dropping off this sweet boy without leaving a name.

When I adopted my dog the story was that he came directly from his former home to the rescue. His name was Bentley. I thought about changing his name to Fabio because he had very long, shiny blonde hair. But in the end I decided to keep it Bentley. My other dog's name is Marley so the two names just seemed to go together better. Lorraine

I have three adopted dogs, the first Bruno had his name for a while and I didn't mind it, he also gets Brunie Prunie and Teddybear and he comes to either

Ladybird was adopted after she was found wandering the streets, I never had any idea of her name but she got her name because of her spots.

Maggs, who adopted us, used to be called Maggie so I shortened it to Maggs and she gets Magget as well, she comes to both.

Of course on the odd occasion they all get called other names not exactly Spark printable especially when they don't do as they are told.

Yea, we renamed our adopted dogs also.

Lefty was Henry. We had a boston at the time name Poncho so we named the little guy Lefty (country music Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings fame)

Penny was Pooch which didn't fit her at all.

Buddy was George. Couldn't think of a new name at the time but kept saying here Bud and it stuck!!

Those are the three we have now and have renamed all the ones we had.

That is funny Bridget. We have code names for our dogs also, R1, R2 and C-dog, and Little boy, Big boy, little girl. If we use their names they get exited that something is up. We also have to say the "F word" which means food, not what you might have thought! Can't get much past these guys. Even our little blind guy can tell when we are a couple of blocks from Grandma's house!

In our house most dogs have two names. One to talk about them, one to call them. If they hear their name all the time they start tuning it out and then it's harder to call them. When ours hear their call name they know something good is coming to them and are happy to come. :)

A dog trainer told me years ago to give the dog a new name when you adopt it. The only one I haven't done that with is the one who was my grands Shih Tzu. They couldn't keep him after the divorce so I took him in and kept him for them...it was a grandma thing!

I have 3 adopted dogs. The oldest, Riptyde, we thought about changing his name to Ripley or something, but Riptyde, Ripper, Rippernoodledoodle, just stuck. Our girl was named Baby, we changed her name to Caity because it sounded like Baby. I wish we would have called her Reese because she looks just like Reese Whitherspoon. : ) Our newest little guy, Raymee, was found as a stray and named by the rescue people. We kept his name in case anyone wanted to track him down and see how he was doing.

We've changed the names of our adopted babies. Golden became Buddy; Sweetie became Mindy; and Molly became Sadie. I actually wanted to name her Rosie, but SHE didn't like it when I called her that. She IMMEDIATELY responded to Sadie though. She's a funny girl!

We adopted our basenji mix from the Humane Society when he was four. His name used to be "Chocolate". We didn't like that name because he's actually more caramel colored! We changed his name to "Phillip". It fits him much better because it's a big name and he's definitely got a big personality! He adjusted just fine. We can call him anything - as long as we don't call him late for dinner!

We got our dogs from a local county animal shelter. They didn't have any names. It took us about a day to decide on Dominick for our "chiweenie". It just seemed to fit him. We picked the name Victor for our second dog. Don't know why. Dom and Vic are the our babies! They give us so much love.

When Chico and Sadie were adopted we kept their names. But they seemed to fit their personalities. I would see no problem with changing the names if you didnt think they worked. Especially if they were young dogs when adopted.
