We just met last week to start planning fall camp. It's going to be father/daughter tailgate. Dress in your favorite team colors. We are going to figure out how to make a goal post for inside. Brats and burgers and hot dogs. Hair ribbon ties. We're trying a new approach. We've never done father/daughter before.

Thank you everyone! I am looking forward to the High School years. I learned when they went to middle school to let go of what I thought the troop should be and make it for them. I think I have really held onto a lot more girls this way. We are flexible and try to do events even if I only have 4 of my 10 girls. I lost one this year and will gain at least 3 so we will be at 12. It is all my little condo can hold.

We will be doing our Journey this year so they can start their projects next year. I will have 10th and 11th graders then. I will encourage them to start in the Summer so they can get a head start on the school year.

I will try to keep you updated on what we do throughout the year. We are always very busy.

Hi Tammy --

Your Canada trip sounds wonderful -- and so does your Troop! It's great to see so many older girl Troops represented on this Team.

I'm not a Leader these days (I'm primarily a Trainer) but I'm looking forward to hearing about what your Troop is up to.

Welcome Tammy
I am currently a Guide Leader but have done Brownies and Teddies (Daisies) before and basically moved along with my daughters. My youngest is now a Guide and starting to work on her own which is great to see. Your trip to Canada sounds amazing.
Good Luck with your Spark journey. Kanga

I am so excited to see so much activity on here today!!!!

I have lead HS girls for the last few years. I agree the schedules make it difficult. What I do is plan on a few half day / full day 'meetings' during the year (the girls get 'homework and are expected to do work on their own, especially now with the new journeys) and then am available at the regular community meeting night (although we have individual troops, we all meet at the High School at the same time to make it easier for parents with girls in different age groups and allow the younger girls to be able to 'look up' to the older girls) to meet with the girls one on one.

I really push for the girls to start planning for their Gold award as soon as they bridge to Seniors as girls usually think 'I have 4 years' and then get to their Junior / Senior years and just can't find the time. I like working with them during the summer when there is a little bit more time for them to focus on their project / journey.

My daughter (and most of my current scouts whose moms are also leaders) are also in that category of not having a choice of continuing in girl scouts. I try to start letting them know Freshman year that it isn't just about earning another award, but what the Gold award means, the scholarships and other opportunities available if it is earned, and just general 'big picture' things.

One thing I would like to do in a couple of years (I want to get my daughter graduated and off to college first) it create a more 'virtual' troop for our council. I think that there are a lot of girls out there that want the scholarship opportunities or have other reasons that Girl Scouting could work for them, but the normal troop environment doesn't work and they still want a 'leader'.

Keep Sparking!

welcome to the team! I have a troop of two soon to be Ambassadors. We need to bridge them yet this fall. Neither of the girls are real interested in scouts, we just keep signing them up and dragging them to an event or two. My daughter will graduate a girl scout if it kills me. She's been in since Kindergarten. She is ready to start her Gold Award if she/we ever come up with a project.

Good luck in GS and in your Spark journey.
Kris

I agree. The leader makes a big difference. So does the Service Unit and GS as a whole in your area. It all depends on what they offer for the older girls and if they let the girls know what is offered. We have changed our meeting days to accommodate the HS activities. We also went from meeting every week to every other. We have one "fun" meeting and one business meeting a month. It works well. I tell the girls that the troop is theirs and they need to let me know what they want to do.

I hope your daughter is at least a Juliette so she can enjoy the activities.

No.... unfortunately her friends are into other things. Her 1 friend would join her but she lives 30 minutes away (moved 3 years ago after them knowing each other for the other 5 years of their life). Her closest friend (geographically & friendship wise) is into drama and wants to "keep her schedule free incase something comes up that she wants to do." (we also got that answer when we....with her mom....tried to talk her into marching band!!!) There's just so much competition for their time these days.... it's hard if they aren't hooked early on & the interest holds. I fully believe it's all about having the right leaders....she's NEVER had the "right" leader.

We have super troops here but my girls wanted to stay together and with me through the end. I am glad. I love being a leader. I lost one girl this year but am gearing up to gain 3. I am sorry there is no troop for your daughter. None of her friends would want to join?

wow! That sounds great!!! Around here, we can't keep them interested long enough to be Seniors. My daughter is now one but has no troop. There's 2 others that I know of but they are attached to a "super troop" of Cadettes and DD wants no part of that troop.

My name is Tammy. I am a leader of a Senior troop in Southern California. We just bridged to Seniors. I have had my troop since they were in K and 1st and they are now in 9th and 10th. We just took a week long trip to Vancouver, BC, Canada. We went kayaking, killer whale watching, zip lining in Whistler and we went to a chocolate buffet for dinner one night. We rented an adorable house and had a BLAST! Cannot wait for our next adventure!

I am trying to lose weight so that I can be healthy and keep up with my girls. I have many health issues that make it difficult to exercise but I keep trying and pushing through it. I am a single mom, work full time and go to school at night for American Sign Language Interpreting. I just stepped down from Service Unit Manager as it was all a bit too much with school. I am still very involved with the team though. I have held most of the team positions over the years. I love to share experiences in order to help others.

I am very excited about this team!

Tammy
