I’ve been in Service Units like that, Kris – ones which were not welcoming and very little help to anyone but the core group. It’s great that you’re able to work around them.

It seems that in some areas it’s up to the Service Unit to provide events for the girls while in other areas Councils have a huge variety of activities. The Council in which I’m leaving has tremendous list of program activities for girls (which can be attended solo or as a Troop). My Service Unit rarely had Unit activities, but I know that others made a point or two or three events a year.

I’ve emailed my future Service Unit Manager and I’m hoping like crazy it’s a good group. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

We don't have any 'official' SU events, but both communities I am involved in are active at community wide events and we reach out to other communities, but the other communities don't always seem to interested.

My SU is very active - no thanks to council though. Our SUD is informative and we wouldn't be able to a 1/5 of what we do without her. on the same hand, she can been defensive and uptight sometimes, but I think that's just the stress of events and meetings. Because when we are in a relaxed environement she is very easy going.

Anyways, we have lots of position - sometimes they don't all get filled, but us loyal GS leaders step up and help with those positions. Currently I am TOC (troop organizing consultant) as well as registrar and reporter (sending information to news papers and updating our SU FB page). I just stepped down from being training coordinator - as it was just too much for me when the other positions.

We have monthly SU events also that we have different leaders chair the event with a committee of other leaders to help. Due to the lack of council events in our area. Do you have any SU events?

The Technology person is responsible for the private service unit 'website' (not a true website, a sub page of the council site), managing the contacts lists, and sending out notices to the leaders. That type of stuff.

I personally HATE dealing with our service unit. I have no idea what the leadership team looks like. They are all snobby, bossy & stuck up so I steer clear. I do know they have 1 leader that heads QSP sales & another that heads popcorn but that's about it.

What does a technology person do? Are you in charge of a website or handle Social Media?

Our council's service units aren't very active - although there are active ones as some places in the council. We do have positions set up though. I am the secretary / technology person for two different SU's, but haven't really had to do anything yet. :)

In the recent discussion about Leader recruitment, I got to thinking about the structure of Service Unit Teams. GSUSA suggests that a Service Unit Team “usually” includes a Service Unit Manager / Director, a Recruiter / Troop Organizer, a Registrar, a Cookie / Product Sales Chair and grade level consultants or Resource person.

I’ve been in Service Units where there were different people for each job (I’ve been a Resource person / consultant) but where I currently live two women do it all (pretty much by their own choice, as far as I can tell).

Do your Service Units have all these positions filled? Is there any recruiting to fill these positions? I’m curious to hear your answers – just as I’m curious to know what it will be like in my new Council.
