Sorry - i have been absent so long. My weight is so bad that I don't even want to get on sparkpeople anymore. Plus last weekend was crazy - cookie delivery, my daughter's 13th birthday (complete with 6 girl sleepover) and her baptism. We have our first cookie booth tonight - got a double at a Walmart on the first day of booth sales - someone actually turned it back in so we grabbed it. Hope we do well. My daughter really wants to hit 1000 and between vacation/illness she didn't get to go door to door as much as she likes to.

My heart is just not in it this year. I'm not very gung ho.

Someone gave me a recipe for the Lemon Coolers that Little Brownie Bakers used to make. I haven't tried them yet, but they sound good.

Lemon Coolers

Lemon Coolers Ingredients

1/2 cup powdered sugar

1 1/2 cups cake flour
1/3 cup sugar

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/3 cup shortening

1 tablespoon water
1 egg

1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 teaspoon Unsweetened lemonade mix
1/8 teaspoon salt

Instructions for Lemon Coolers

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
2. Cream together sugars, shortening, egg, vanilla, and salt in
a large bowl.
3. Add the flour and baking powder. Add 1 tablespoon of water and
continue mixing until dough forms a ball.
4. Roll dough into 3/4-inch balls and flatten slightly onto a
lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until
cookies are light brown.
5. As cookies bake, combine 1 cup powdered sugar with the lemonade
drink mix in a large plastic bag and shake thoroughly to mix.
6. When the cookies are removed from the oven and while they are
hot, add 4 or 5 at a time to the bag and shake it until the cookies
are well coated. Repeat with the remaining cookies

You know, after years of selling them and having them sitting in my house, I am really tired of them. I was disappointed that ABC virtually had no new cookies this year. My favorites are always the ones they discontinue, like the strawberry one, or the lemon pastry cream. I like the lemonaids but I have eaten enough of them that I am pretty burn out on them as well. I don't sound very "girl scouty", do I?

Wow you all have been busy, so we had our parent meeting Monday night to have parents sign permission slips for girls to get their cookie sheets we officially can not start pre-orders until Saturday and then they will be delivered around 2-20-09. So wish us luck, we use ABC as well, and they have usually been good. We did change our lemon cookie which was one of my favorites before they changed it, not quite the same, but thin mints do not taste any different then I remember as a girl when I sold them in girl scouts, yum and so fattening.
Does anyone else have issues staying away from the GS cookies, I had such problems and was eating so many of them that I had to delegate the cookies to someone else last year and again this year. It just is better for me to not have them in my living room (as I do not have a garage).

I would like to know about the corporate sales as well. That would be awesome. You already have a lot more advise then I have.

I heard that some councils are selling the actual cookies rather then taking orders. Their gripe was that you had to take so many cookies and if you didn't sell them, you were stuck paying for them. Not sure how I would feel about that one.

As you may have noticed on the other thread, my daughter's goal is 1000 boxes. I think she is going to have a tough time making it as we are going out of town tomorrow for a week's vacation, but we will try. Thought I'd share some of the things she does to meet her goal - she averages about 700 boxes per year.
1. Make door hangers to put on doors that folks aren't home.
2. Give a receipt with my name/number and note how much they paid, if they insisted on pre-paying. Include the dates that you will be delivering.
3. Include a thank you note with the cookies, and let them know how to contact you if they want more.
4. If your council sells the yard signs, put one in your front lawn - we'd had stangers walk up and buy.
Please share any hints you may have to increase cookie sales. One thing I'd like to know - how do these girls get the corporate sales. We approached a car dealership once and they thought we were crazy - they were pretty rude.

Well, we start cookie sales tomorrow morning. Of course, we are in the 70's today and it's supposed to drop to 40-50's tomorrow. My daughter wants to sell 1000 boxes and she likes to sell door to door. Guess I will be getting lots of walking exercise. May jog in place to keep warm.

Cookies in Southern California have been $4.00 for a few years now. Ridiculous! I sure hope they don't go up.
My sons Boy Scout troop decided to skip the prizes for their popcorn sales, so the troop would get more money and it could go toward paying for their summer camp. I think our Girl Scout troop might do that this year too. Sometimes the prizes are so cheap and end up in the garage sale next year anyway.

Some girls just have more opportunity to sell more cookies than others. We have girls that sell tons because their parents work in large offices etc.
My daughter is lucky to have a friend who buys tons of boxes to use as gifts for her customers, or she wouldn't sell as many as she does. But, I want my daughter to know that selling the cookies is not for selfish reasons ("what can I get out of it?"), but for the good of the whole troop (team). Our girls have used their earned money to do some really cool things that everyone can enjoy together. They've made some great memories.
Also, my daughter really likes to push donations of cookies for our local food pantry. She got 25 boxes donated just from her sales alone. We love to see how excited the people having hard times are to be able to get GS cookies. It's really an appreciated luxury item to them, and reminds my daughter how blessed we are.

I found a box of Somoas the other day, that I had hidden. I guess I did a good job of hiding them! I wish I'd have left them out for Santa.

We had the cookie meeting last night. For older girls there are 3 options this year: cookie bucks (new for us - like gift certificates to the GS shop or camp), prizes or 7 cents extra per box. My daughter had prepared a financial analysis of how much she earned for the troop, selling her 1000 boxes for the prize vs. how much they troop would make if she only sold average amounts and they took the 7 cents. She didn't present it, as the the cookie mom pointed out how much extra we would make based on last years sales, and the girls said for that small an amount, they would rather have prizes. What a relief. At 12 and 13, everything is SO dramatice that i thought this might be a big deal. Whew!!1

My daugther has been the high seller in the fall sales and the cookies and I don't like that the other parents and leaders expect more out of her each year. She already goes door to door but she loves it. She always asks me to go.

We start sales on 1/10. I too hate that it's the worst time of year, even though we are in Texas - it's usually raining. My daughter REALLY wants to make 1000 boxes, but with the economy and smaller boxes, I am worried. Plus some of the girls in the troop want to forego prizes for a little more money. My daughter is by far the major seller (like average for everyone else is 100 boxes) and she really wants the prizes. I must say, I don't think someone who sells 20=30 boxeses should get as much as a say as my daughter who spends every weekend door to door and who has sold at least 700 boxes every year. I am really dreading the meeting we discuss this.

We take cookie order 1/1 - 1/31. Cookies come back the last week in February.

And what happened to the All Abouts? I really liked those cookies.

I want to get to a healthy weight and stay there forever. I don't have to make huge changes all at once, just small ones consistently.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the Peanut Butter Sandwich were awful last year. They tried to change the recipe and we had so many complaints about stale cookies, it was incredible. Peanut Butter Patties also got some complaints. Supposedly, they have change the recipe back. I'm hoping consumers have a short memory and it won't affect sales this year.

Our service unit was disappointed with the change from Little Brownie to ABC. I personally don't notice a big difference in cookie taste, but there are some that say that Thin Mints, Samoas, and Trefoils from Little Brownie are better than the equivalents from ABC.

Our cookies are from Little Brownie Bakers this year. The boxes are just a smidge smaller - equvalent to 1-3 cookies. Same price $3.50 each.

Our cookie sale starts Jan 19, but since we do not take pre-orders anymore, our troop had to have our initial cookie order in on Nov 17. I did not notice the smaller boxes. Which baker do you use? We use ABC now. There were so many changes after realignment, ugh. We are still at $3.50/box. The weather here in Jan and Feb is hit and miss. Some days it will be beautiful out and others it will be cold, windy and rainy.

Yeah door to door in snow, and sleet, etc, not good, we usually have nice weather, although it did snow here yesterday. SNOW IN VEGAS??? emoticon Vegas must have confused itself for Chicago.

I wouldn't sell door to door in that weather either, but we're in sunny Florida, so it's door to door for us. We begin January 9th. I'm bummed that they made the boxes smaller, but the price is the same. I think it's going to hurt sales.

I'm not positive on ours, but that time frame is what we usually do. So has to be close. We are in Iowa. I refuse to sell door to door in January. Today was 18 below with the wind chill factor. Forget that!
