My girls are all quite excited about the change but we were not given enough notice this was coming so we could rap up our Junior program, badges we were working on, completing our Bronze Award, etc. . That is why my girls are choosing to stay 6th grade Juniors next year.

It is exciting! But I have gone to our big Council Meetings (the first one last Sept brining all our new merged Council together) and the "official" one in Febuary. No mention of the changes.

They printed them up in a small post in our Volunteer magazine in January - I found out. . Without much talk about them so no one really knew what was going on.

Thank you for helping to clarify so much!

Go Team Golden Phoenix!

Wonderful. That one I really want to go to, because Emily will be old enough then. Houston.......I wonder how long it will take to drive there. Better start planning now.

I just want to go experience it. I want to see what it is all about. My daughter won't be old enough this time. In three years she can do whatever the older girls get to do. She is two months short of being old enough.

I am in Atlanta. I will not be taking any of the girls (I have a Daisy troop) but I will speak with some of the leaders to see if they are interested.

I want to get to a healthy weight and stay there forever. I don't have to make huge changes all at once, just small ones consistently.

How far are you from Indiana? I'm in Iowa so it's not too bad. We have three leaders and two daughters so that should help our gas and hotel costs.

I got a little more info on the Journeys yesterday. They sound pretty cool. Other then that, there wasn't much info at the meeting. I was rather disappointed. Other then we're in for so much more change still. I hope the leaders can keep trudging through it all. I love GS and I feel overwhelmed and frustrated. I hope we don't lose a too many leaders over it.

We still have so much confusion over S2B. It's really not that complicated, but people want to make so much more out of it.

Will you be going to Indiana in October? I think we are going to try to get there. Anyone else going to National Convention?

When I started out as an adult volunteer almost 10 years ago, I had no idea I'd end up wearing so many GS 'hats'! I am extremely fortunate to be a part of the Vermont Council as our leadership has always been super at communication and support for its volunteers. They also been very open to change and that attitude trickles down through the membership. I remember when Studio 2B came out. I went to a regional conference and there was so much misinformation and resistance from people from the other councils. I was part of the panel discussion because VT had rolled out S2B right at the beginning with GREAT success. We're planning to do the same type of thing with these newest changes. I'm now on our Leadership Action Development team and we're already planning a huge roll-out for August and smaller events in each area for September.
I'm most excited because the national changes should bring us all together so we're all on the same page as far as goals and outcomes.

VELMOOSE you seem to have a lot of information. You are fortunate! Since I will be SU manager next year I hope I will be more informed. We have our annual meeting today. So I'm excited to hear what they have to say.

New levels are nationwide and will go into effect this coming fall. There will be new program materials available called "Journeys" to augment the program you already have.
All handbooks will change soon. National has is in process of developing new materials for adults and girls. Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadet, Senior, Ambassador levels.
First Journey - It's Your World: Change it! 7-8 meetings and outcome goal is accomplished. Goal is to have 2-3 Journeys availabe each year at each level. Each Journey will be supplemental to the current badge books, which are going to
be gradually phased out (probably by 2010). I've seen a preview of the new materials and I think the girls will really like them. There's plenty of room to adapt them to your particular area and you'll still have time for all the other things your troops like to do.
I'm going to one of the National conferences this coming week and will post what I find out when I return.

I think that like any change, it will be a little confusing and there will be some people who are resistant but in the long run it will be good for girls and good for our organization as a whole. As a volunteer (leader, trainer, SUM & Day Camp Director) I'm excited for the coming year(s) as we bring GS finally into the 21st century!

Here in Northeast Ohio we don't have a choice. We have to stay as Daisy's for the 2nd year. (as I'm sure you all can remember all of my complaining)

We have heard the same thing - levels are changing, but for this first year there is a choice. The Daisies do not have enough to do to last 2 years until more programs are established for them for example or if older girls thought they had another year to complete things they can take it, etc.

This has been distributed nation wide (as I am up in Washington). However my Council has informed me that since this next year ('08 - '09) is a traditional year, the troops get to choose if they want to use the new guidelines and go into that level or stick with the old guidelines.

My group are 5th grade juniors and accordingly we should all of a sudden bridge to Cadettes. But again - I have cleared it through my council and have been told we can register as either Cadettes or Juniors.

My girls are choosing to stay as Juniors as they have so much unfinished badge work, not ready to bridge and they are going to finish their Bronze award next year.

My advice is to check with your local Council as I am sure you too can choose to either go into Brownies as planned or stay as Daisy's for 2 years.

All I know is they better change that Brownie handbook and petal system because I didn't see it as something that could be drug out for 2 years!!

Pre-K has been discussed around here on and off for a long time. There were some experimental troops doing 4 year olds and the biggest issue is those troops run more like babysitting and tend to be very small in numbers (5 - 8 kids registered). And most activities in Girl Scouts are not geared towards those younger girls. . It gives the kids something to look forward to when they start school especially now that they expect Daisy's to start selling cookies.

Can you imagine a 4 year old at the grocery store for 2 hours trying to sell cookies?

Go Team Golden Phoenix!

I had hoped they would make Daisies Pre-K and K. I have so many moms contact me about their Pre-K kids wanted to join GS. Every other grade in the school can be a GS but not them. Plus, almost all my Daisy troops were upset this year about not being able to brdige to Brownies. I wish they had let this class bridge, then started the 2 year Daisy program with the next group and the new materials. just my opinion

When registering my troop for next year this is the information I rec'd:

The new membership grade levels are:
Daisy - grades K - 1st
Brownie - grades 2nd - 3rd
Junior - grades 4th - 5th
Cadette - grades 6th - 8th
Senior - grades 9th and 10th
Ambassador - grades 11th - 12th (just added)

Not sure if this will affect ALL Girl Scouts or just those in Greater Atlanta. However, it personally affects my troop since most girls enter in the 1st grade as Brownies. Now those entering will be Daisy's (which means that more parent participation will be needed).

Please let me know if anyone else has rec'd this information.
