Thanks-I'll keep that in mind. We have someone that stays in charge of the treasurer part of it at all times. So we don't have to do that. Yeah! They said there isn't a lot to it. Just getting the leaders there and motivated.

Way to go. I am stepping down after 3 years as SUM. My service unit had been non-existant for a year when I took over, so it was really tough. It's a strange feeling, part of me happy (hubby is definitely happy) and part of me is sad - like I am sending my baby off to college or something. But it's always good to get new people in with fresh ideas. We really try to make the monthly meetings fun . . . once a year it's a thank you dinner, sometimes a craft. This month we are teaching swap etiquette and the SU team is making swaps to give out. Also doing a quick review of financials as they are due in May. Good luck and feel free to give a shout for anything you need.

One day at a time . . .

One of the things my SU does to keep attendance good(as we have 47 troops this year) is offer snapshots and the opportunity to teach those snapshots for the Fearless Leader books. And of course threats that if you miss your meeting, you miss trainings like how to reregister your troop, eBudde for cookies, etc. . We used to always do a craft but found most leaders preferred to get business done and then go home. .

And reading on - our 26 year old SUM with the two young boys is actually lying low this year because she got cancer - is recovering from the surgery, chemo, etc. She has to be on a very restictive diet, is staying at her moms and her hubby is having to man the kids on his own with some help from us in the SU.

I really suggest you take a poll of what day and time works best for your SU, what are they looking for in the meetings, and what will spark them to come every month. Also once you pick your day and time, keep it consistent every month so they know it is their day to do meetings. Ours are every 1st Wed of the month at 6:30pm. We meet in one of our middle school libraries. .

Again good luck!!

Go Team Golden Phoenix!

Our Thinking Day got canceled this year too. Crummy weather.....I'm sick of it. Raining today and yesterday.

I had tried everything to get attendance up at meetings; different days, door prizes etc. Finally, last year we changed our meetings to 9am on a Saturday. We decide which Saturday ahead of time. Most of the leaders are out running errands anyway so I almost always have every troop represented. Once in awhile I'll offer a quickie training (like Ceremonies or games). Weather was our biggest obstacle this winter. We had a couple meetings cancel and we cancelled our Thinking Day event because of snowstorms but aside from that, it's been a pretty good year.

I'm thinking a mother daughter dutch oven cooking at a park. Hope that will draw a crowd.

I just need to come up with motivating reasons to come to the meetings.

First, congrats to you (I think) lol

I just actually agreed to be the SU Secretary and I hope I can even do THAT right :)

Our SU is doing a "Family Fun Day in the Park" thing where we all get together in the local city park on a weekend day, and each Troop does a timed sporting event, round-robin rotation fashion.

While us gals and siblings are having fun, the men in our families are going to be doing the cooking/grilling.

I think it's great because it's a totally neutral setting, less formal and way laid back, more family-oriented. We'll be putting an add in the paper, too so that people in the community are aware Girl Scouts are out and about and having fun!

No one can make you feel any particular way, good or bad........ unless you let them.

Congrats to you and yes you are nuts! :) Our SUM just survived cancer so a few of us have kind of picked things up a bit. It still comes down to the "same people" doing everything though. I mentioned in other mosts that we have a strong 2nd, 4th, and 5th grades, but other than that they all kind of do their own thing and that's that. We do large S.U. gatherings once or twice a year like ice skating and bowling. That draws in a lot of people. Our best turn outs though are when we just invite the troops and families from our town. The gal that signed up with me doesn't have a daughter. She has a 4 year old son. She was a first grade to adult GS. And neither of us live in that SU.

I will keep you posted. I think we will start our first meeting with a Sundae party. Then we will have a couple mother/daughter activites. I want to see how that goes. I need to find someone to watch the kids during the business part of the meeting.

Well keep us posted as to how it all turns out! I know you have at least a year of learning and figuring it out! Maybe some of your great ideas I can put into place in my SU.

We have similar problems of a lot of the same people stepping up over and over - a lot of the events that used to run stopped when those ladies retired from scouting or their kids moved out of those grade levels. . It is rough sometimes. Heck - our SUM is a person who doesn't even have girls! She has two boys ages 1 & 2. She got into scouting 4 years ago before she had the kids!

We used to have good turn out to the meetings. This year with the realignment has hurt. I think there are lots of hard feelings toward the council and all the changes.

Great event ideas. Our fall camp out will be a Juliette Birthday Bash. We will donate $1 from each admission to the JGL fund.

I am in two SU myself and the other one is huge, great turn out. They do Girl Scout Bucks with the end of year auction. They love it.

We want to plan a Leader/Daughter camp. I like leader night out too.

Wow Kris - Congrats on the SUM. . I was an assistant SUM one year and it was fun but a lot of work however the gal who was doing the main SUM work (as I work full time) couldn't handle it for a second year. . But the gals who run it now are doing good too (this is their 3rd year). .

Some ideas to help out are also dependent on what is in your area. . We have done gymnastics overnights for all ages, mother/daughter tea (all ages), Mommy & Me (Brownie event), Daisy Days (bridging activites), Thinking Day, Roller Skating, Ice Skating, Leader's Night Out, Me & My Guy, Junior Bridge in the mall sleepover, Juliette Low Sing Along (around 10/31 - also collection for World Friendship Fund) - just a few.

Are the same volunteers the only ladies who show up to the leader's meetings? Do a survey and figure out the best time and day to hold the meetings for maximum attendance - get fresh blood and opinions. . This year, our SUM did something called "Fearless Leader" and we earn "points" for doing GS stuff. In the end it will be worth patches and many entries for the the end of the year party auction.

Good luck to you! If there is anything you need a better description of - just let me know.

Go Team Golden Phoenix!

Our SU is at an all time low! There is no commradary. No one helps to do anything. It is the same people for every event. No one will do anything. It might be kind of hard to delegate. But we are hoping if we bring some fun things to the meetings that might help and get the spark back going. The ladies that had it this year are burnt out.

Our SU only does age level fun days. Daisy fun day, brownie funday etc. Then fall camp out. We don't do any other events. I have a feeling if we do more, the same people will be planning them. I would like to see a Thinking Day event. We will have to do a fundraiser because we lost our budget this year.

I am working to bring more older girl events to our SU so we can keep them in GS. We just have to get moral up over all. I hope we can do it. I'm going in positive and see what happens.

I like the beach theme that would be a fun camp theme. I'll have to remember that for next year. Our fall camp is a JGL birthday bash. Pin the sash on Juliette, donate a dollar to the JGL fund, ice cream in a bag, homemade rootbeer. Fairy ball sounds like fun too. I like the name.

Are you crazy! Just kidding. Congrats on the new position. As a long time SUM, my best advice is to delegate! My SU is in a minor upswing with some new leaders coming in this spring. My MMD (used to be FD) held a Fairy Ball for Daisy and Brownie girls and we've got a GirlSports events later this month. A few years ago the Studio 2B girls in my SU put on a winter beach party. It was an overnight with beach themed games, decorations and music. They watched Little Mermaid before everyone hit the sleeping bags. We held it at a local Masonic Temple which was cool because they had candlepin bowling.

Congrats to you!
I like the idea of a Mother/Daughter tea. It can be fun while etiquette educational.

I want to get to a healthy weight and stay there forever. I don't have to make huge changes all at once, just small ones consistently.

Yikes, what have I done. I keep telling myself I need to say no more. I do have a co manager-thank goodness. Our SU is in a deep hole. We need to get people excited about GS. I have to come up with some ideas to draw them in. Any ideas? I was thinking a sundae party-not very Spark Happy, but fun. A mother daughter spa night, Fashion show. Any ideas for me?
Thanks Kris
