Headaches

When I was first fitted with my Cpap by the Resp Therapist, he adjusted the forehead headstraps "just so" (cant tell you what that is now) and said to leave them there to prevent headaches. I've changed everything several times depending upon if I'm on my back or sides. When sleeping on my back it feels like I have a 10 pound weight lying on my face so I adjust the straps...

No problems with the CPAP, I like my nasal canula very much. Thankful that I don't have to have very high pressure; especially when I sleep on my right side, I have very little problem, but I use the CPAP so I can also sleep on my left side, which tends to become obstructed. When the air is dry in my house, though (as when the furnace runs often in the wintertime), I'm grateful for the humidification the machine gives me.

There have been some questions about headaches. I'm glad you guys mentioned this b/c I have been getting terrible headaches in one part of my head for about a year. Feels like a nail driven into my head. It's not sinus. One doctor told me it was "Vestibular Migraine" and put me on an antidepressant, which helped sometimes, but I ran out and never went back. Liquid Tylenol works and it's cheaper! But the next time I see my pulmonary doctor I'm going to mention this headache.

Thanks, folks.

Have you tried using a pillow under your knees when on your back and between your knees on your side? That helps keep the space open between your lower back joints, taking off the pressure. I've slept like this for years at the advise of a chiropractor and it really works.

I don't have any good solution, but I can certainly relate to the not moving situation. I have a memory-foam pillow that keeps my head in a level position because I mostly sleep on one side or the other. With the CPAP gear, it's hard to move around very much. I've always been a fairly quiet sleeper, but the hookup makes it harder to move around. What about setting an alarm to alert you to change positions? I've even wondered about the possibility of developing bedsores because of not changing position often enough. Hospital patients have to be moved every 2 hours to prevent them.

I've been using the Cpap for about 6 weeks and sleep solidly. Problem, I wake up with a back ache and side pain. My Chiro says its because I don't move. I use a Chiro pillow so my head and body line up. Any ideas out there?

I went back to see my new lung doctor this week, after using the bipap for little over a week. I was happy to tell him that I was doing so much better. He got the report of my last sleep study, from the hospital where I had it done. He showed me my report. I could hardly believe that the doctor that I had at the time of my study, had recommended a bipap and of course a new setting. Why, I asked him, didn't he ever mention it to me?? Since I had a study in September,
he went ahead and gave me a prescription to get a new bipap.
I think the Health Reform is already affecting what doctors are doing. Lots of lab tests will not be done anymore in 2010, but I have been told by the hospital, that it is already happening.

Thank you for sharing this information with us! Having good raport with your doctor is just as important as having a good doctor. Sounds like now you may have found both! Better equipment will be a plus, too. Keep us posted, please!

I have been on a cpap for a little over 2 years. I have not been doing well for the last 6 months. I have felt so sleepy & tired in daytime, just plain miserable. I didn't feel like the lung doctor & sleep study was trying to help me. I had my last study 3 months ago. They didn't reset my machine, did nothing! My husband often at night, wakes me so I will start breathing again. I am having apneas in my cpap. My setting is 12. So, I changed doctors. He talked to me & my DH for 30-35 mins. I had to complete 15 pages answering questions. He must have looked at them because when he started talking he stated exactly what I had been going through and how I had been feeling & the whole 9 yards. Honest, I felt like crying, it was all I could do to hold back the tears, that finally someone understood & knew my condition. However, he prescribed my cpap to be changed to read 12 blowing into my lungs and 6 exhaling. I explained that I had a cpap only, that it couldn't be set like that. He insisted. Of course, I took it to my provider, it couldn't be set like that. To shorten things, the doc found I was correct. He sent me to a different provider of supplies & told me to ask for a loaner bipap. I took my prescription to them yesterday, they lifted out the right side of my cpap & put a bipap back in!!! I used it for the first time last night. Oh, & the doc wanted me to use my nasal mask (had not been using) & a chin strap. I did so, but boy the air going down to my lungs seemed fierce and when I exhaled, the timing seemed to be off so bad, that I knew I couldn't sleep in the thing. But I looked to see if it had the setting bi flex, it did. I played around with this for awhile & finally it worked pretty good. I slept about 7 hours before I had to go to the bathroom. I didn't hook back up to machine, got 2 hours more sleep. But boy I felt good today. In two weeks, I go back to him, he will send me for another sleep study & if I need a bipap, I will get a new one. I know that this is lengthy, but if someone else is having these problems, perhaps it will help them. He also mentioned that I might have narcolepsy. We'll know in about 3 weeks or so.

Interesting use for corn syrup.
emoticon

Wonder if there's corn syrup in the commercial stuff.
Because I have to be so careful about sodium intake, I am a little leery of trying any of these. I hear what you're saying about the preservatives, though. There are so many side effects from all the chemicals we put into our bodies, and it's just about impossible to sort them all out because we can't control all the interacting sources. Then, too, everything is confounded by our individual genetics, and our personal emotional reactions to stressors play a big part, too. Makes quite a "soup" doesn't it?

My doctor recommended a home made Netti using a "baby bulb" and 1 cup warm tap water, 1/4 tsp table salt, 1/4 tsp baking soda and an optional 1/2 tsp of corn syrup to bind the salt to the walls of the sinuses.

I helped me with my sinus infection when my nasal passages shut down.

Yes for me. I am so receptive to headaches that I never leave home without advil. I got headaches from grinding my teeth, snoring, migraines, dry sinuses, too much coffee, too much glare from the computer monitor, if my head sweated and got chilled, but since September I when I started using the CPAP, I have been using less and less advil.

Do you think it could be related to getting REM? My neurologist said my hypotic events occurred over 75% of my REM sleep stages.

I've heard that many people have headaches associated with sleep apnea, and I think they're quite possibly related to the brain cells not getting enough oxygen. It can't be a good thing!

One of my daughters is a pharmacist, and she recommends the saline rinse method. I think if you can tolerate the sodium, then it might be a better choice than harsher chemical treatments.

When I get congested in the daytime or evening, I use saline and my nasal passages open up and I can breathe again. I have found that if I use saline with preservatives, it makes my congestion worse. I would suggest that you make sure it is not listed in saline that you purchase.

I've been thinking of trying a saline spray or rinse if I start having any sinus or cold congestion. They were demonstrating some at my supermarket last week, but I was in a hurry and didn't have time to check it out.

I would suggest using saline spray and/or saline rinse. Walmart sales the rinse kits for about $12. I don't get colds but I get congestion. When I do, which was awhile ago, I use saline rinse several times and now I am okay. My PO doctor told me that I could use Afrin spray at night before going to bed. But that is the only time he suggests that it be used, because of complications. He also, told me that I can't use saline too much.

I am using a mask that covers my nose & mouth. I really like it. I had been using nasal pillows, but I had a sleep study about a month ago, they recommended that I go to a full mask. I am doing much better, especially re: daytime drowiness. I had to quit putting heat on for moisture, it seemed to smother me, even on the setting 1. I use lip balm and gargle with a mouthwash, called Biotene. It provides moisture and I hardly ever have a dry mouth.

I had my sleep study last night.
Slept good until 3 am, then had a hard time sleeping (getting to be normal for me, I don't think it's related to Sleep Apnea). But anyways, I'm sure that is why I'm as tired as usual this morning.
The pressure on my machine is set at 7, this morning the tech that helped me said she had my pressure as high as 13 during the night, but my Dr may not want to put it that high.
I'm just glad to know that I wasn't crazy and that yep, my pressure was too low (and I'm sure that's why I started having problems 2 months ago)!
I will let you all know how things go as far as that, when I myself find out in a couple days. (now I knnow my pressure is too low, I can't wait until it is raised so I can sart feeling better and feeling somewhat like a live human again!)

I have one question, though. (well, maybe two) is there a way to tell if your pressure is too high? If so, how? Will you feel it somehow in your body(ie, symptoms)?
I ask partly because I woke up with a bad case of gas this morning, and that never happens. I did, however, have a good case of case yesterday afternoon (I took an anti- gas pill for it before I went to the hospital for my study, so by then I was fine). and it could also have been what I ate for dinner. But I'm also wondering if too high a pressure can can gas, or was it something else? and what, if any, other problems can too high of a pressure cause?

hope you all are having a great day & talk to you later!

My CPAP has a reservoir that's on a little heating unit. The temperature can be adjusted for how much humidity you want to add to the air: the warmer the water, the more humid the air. The air blows through the chamber and over the water and picks up humidity, and then goes through the hose. That keeps my sinuses from drying out. If you're breathing through your mouth, and you have a full mask, it should help some with dry mouth also. I also use a lip balm on my lips before I put on the CPAP.

I use filtered water because it's cheaper than buying distilled, and it seems to work fine for me. Once in a while I remove the reservoir, rinse it out and let it dry. With only filtered air and filtered water going in, it seems to stay quite clean for me. It doesn't work, though, if you don't put water in it.

Where do you find it? I've looked locally and none of the different pharmacies carry it. Locally is Wisconsin.

I went to the dentist last week, and when I mentioned I have sleep apnea & use a mask, they gave me a little packet with samples of the Biotene Mouthwash, toothpaste, and some gel. They told me that dry mouth isn't goodf for your teeth, because you need the saliva to help protect your teeth from cavities.
They also told me you can get it at like Walmart and it's not too expensive. I just happened to be going to Walmart after that, so went & looked... the Biotene Dry Mouth Mouthwash was about 6.00 (not my definiotion of cheap for mouthwash, but if it works, I'll buy it!).... make sure you get thhe one for dry mouth, they had a regular Biotene for about .50 cents cheaper. I didn't think to look for the toothpaste or gel, though.

I am still having the facial numbness & neck pain, plus for the last two weeks have been feeling extremely tired during the day (not to mention a tad grouchy & depressed). All my blood tests that my dr had me do came back normal, so now I get to have another sleep study done. I just hate to think that maybe it's something with my machine that we missed when I was at the DME, and find that out after going though the expensive sleep study.... but I've been so tired lately that I don't think this is the case...this whole experience has certainly taught me a lot!

Talk to you all later, and have a great day!

sorry it took me a while to get back with you guys.
been tired thanks to PMS and all that jazz.

Chickory-- I have always had fairly low BP. At my Dr's visit it was like 117/85 or something like that (I don't remember) But I don't thank it has much to do with this.

so, ALL of my tests came back good [including my cholesterol test.... YAY... but that has nothing to do with this post]. No amenia, plus I don't have whatever else they tested me for.
So, I will have another sleep study done. I mentioned to my Dr that my DME told me there are now sleep study tests that can be done at home, so they are supposedly looking into that for me (they were supposed to call me back Friday but haven't). So, hopefully, the problem is just that my pressure needs to be upped.
Have a Sparky Day everyone!

I have 5 different syles of chin straps and none of them seem to work very well. The one I like turns out to be the cheapest one. The one that works actually leaves an imprint on the under part of my chin that makes me look like I tried to hand myself!

Hey Becky,
Have they given you any more information yet? When/if they do your sleep study, of course they'll monitor your blood pressure. When I have occasional numbness, I always think of my blood pressure possibly being lower than it should be, and the circulation being cut off by pressure. Don't suppose that's really the problem, but just thought I'd throw it out there. We're thinking of you!

KHAT, Actually the chin straps that I have used in the past has not kept me from opening my mouth. However, about 3 months ago I mentioned to my cpap provider that companies should make more durable chin straps. He told me then about one called Ruby (red in color), but called a headgear. I bought one. It is very comfortable to wear and much more durable. Once adjusted to fit, it is so easy to put on. The company that is written on the headgear is CardinalHealth.

To relieve dry mouth, I use Biotene mouth wash. I never go to bed without having clean teeth, tongue, and gargling with Biotene. It makes the world of difference. It is not always 100% effective, but pretty nearly so. If you have fever blisters, using Biotene regularly, you will likely not have anymore of them. I discovered all this on my own. I told my doctor about it & recommended her to tell her patients. Don't know if she did or not. But she did write the name down. I also told her about SP because she is overweight, she wrote the name down and stuck it in her pocket. Don't know if she checked us out or not. It is her loss, if she didn't. I hope this info helps you and others. I love when I read something that will help me.

I prefer nasal pillows but I also have to use a good chin strap because I am a mouth breather. I have found if I use nasal pillows for long period of times, that I get a nasal infection. I have nose allergies & sinus problems. I switch from pillows to full mask from time to time because of my problems.

I use the nasal pillows. Works fine. For the first week or so, make it a habit to lubricate your nostrils in the morning with either lotion or something like that. Helps to get you over the edge of your nose adjusting to this all night.

How is everyone feeling? RHALES I will be praying for you that things get better. I got the nasal pillows a few days ago thanks to my awesome cardiologist and then I got a sinus infection so I haven't been able to try it yet. Does anyone else have the nasal pillows? If they dont work for me I can always go back to the full faced mask. I hope everyone has a good Labor Day weekend.. emoticon

Thanks you guys!

I have an appointment with my Dr next week, I will let you know how it goes.
I haven't heard anything as far as the results of all the blood test. Can't decide if that's a good thing or not :).
I have been feeling at least a bit better most of this week. Not so much so today because I'm stressed about something (so I'm sure stress has something to do with all this... fun...)

This seems to be a serious problem to me. I have never had those symptoms before, nor heard of anyone, who has had them. It is good that they are doing all the testing on you. At least they can rule out some other serious health problem. Hopefully, there aren't any. You may even need oxygen now. I will be having another sleep study this month. It's been a year since the last one. I know I have gotten worse. The last study, my oxygen stayed down all night. That will cause all kinds of problems, serious ones. I may get that added the next time. I hope that you don't suffer too much, before you have your next study. We are all concerned for you.

I saw my Dr Friday. Before sending me for another sleep study, she wants to rule out other things, like Vit D deficinecy & anemia, & I can't remember what else. So, they are doing blood tests on a couple different things (as well as re- testing my cholesterol), & they also did neurological tests, as well as a EKG on me. The EKG results were good, the other tests we're still waiting on. MOST, if not ALL of these tests were also done on me a year ago, (before finding out I have sleep apnea), to rule things out... it was after all those tests came back good that I was sent for my 1st sleep study.
(yep, all of this is really sounding familiar!)
My Dr wants me to journal my chest pain & facial numbness, try taking ibuprofen at each meal & see if that helps, and see her again in two weeks.
around 6:20 this am, I awoke to my right arm being numb (I think I was sleeping on my back at the time). I fell back asleep, & woke up around 7:20 to my heart racing. I had my machine & mask on both times. These are things that also used to happen to me once in a while before I started using the Cpap, & this is pretty much the 1st time either has happened since I started using it. It took these things happening this morning for me to remember they used to happen, and very possibly are sypmtoms for me.
I journaled about them for my Dr, I probably also will call her tomorrow about them.

Hope you are all having a wonderful day!
