I trust all will go well. My pressure goes up to 9 and it made a big difference from what I was on at first.

I was able to meet with a tech yesterday & she couldn't see anything wrong with my cushion, mask, hose, or machine. She said that sometimes with people whose pressure is at a low setting (mine starts at 4, ramps up to 7), sometimes they end up eventually having to have their pressure raised up a little bit & to call my Dr & see about getting that done. I called my Dr (regular DR, that is), she wants to meet with me first before giving another referal, I have an appointment with her tomorrow morning.
You know, I've been feeling a little bit better the last 2 days (but not completely), maybe this all could be from stress & or forgetting to clean my mask & machine like I should, or a combination of things. Who knows.
I'll let you know how things go tomorrow.
HAve a good night everyone!

I called the tech today around 10 am & left a message saying that I could come in this afternoon if she had time available, if she would just call me back & let me know. She never called me back.
I have time available tomorrow morning, so 1st thing in the morning I might try seeing if I can come in.

I understand she/ they may have been too busy to call me back today, no problem if it's just a one time thing, but if this garbage keeps going on I'm gonna do whatever I have to do to switch to another company.

so, I called my DME early Friday morning. The secretary couldn't tell me anything, other than it doesn't usually take a week. She said she would have someone look at my info & call me back. Finally after me calling AGAIN, they called around noon, & left a message (I was driving at the time). the message was letting me know that they just do donations of machines, not masks & whatnot, but they could get me a new cushion for 25$ (instead of 71) if that is what I need. [b/c I am low- income, they donated all my stuff last year. This is my 1st time needing to replace anything]. NO mention of me having ordered anything last week.
So, when I could, I called back & talked to the tech & said I don't know if it's the cushion, the mask or what, I don't see any cracks in any of it (all I know is I'm having the same problems.... lack of energy, chest/ neck pain & facial numbness... that I had before I got my Cpap machine Last Dec, and all these problems went away when I started using the machin, until now...), so basicly they want me to bring my equipment in & see if they can find the problem, if they can't find anything wrong I will need to talk to my Dr again & probably have another sleep study done...oh, the joys of life...

They blamed it on the mail, and the mail man just rolled his eyes. He then showed me the date it was mailed. Bunch of goofs. It is through my HMO so I'm stuck.

For those of you who've had to order new masks, ect, how long did it take from the day you ordered it to the day it was delivered?
Friday will mark one week since I called & placed the order with my DME for my mask.
I'm guessing at least is normal, but I don't know, this being my first time ordering.

CHICORY I am on Lasix now for my feet and legs swelling and they have been swelling for the last six months and the water pill doesn't help and when it's hot here they are worse even when I am in air condition all day. Do you think this is from my heart problem or the sleep apnea? All I know is my feet and legs are killing me. emoticon

When I first started taking a diuretic for water retention (1976), the doctor put me on Lasix. As I recall, it's one of the most powerful diuretics. For years, now, I've been on hydrochlorothiazide. My impression is that it's a gentler diuretic, and might be "potassium-sparing." However I am definitely uncertain about this. You might ask your doctor if you're on a diuretic and having problems with muscle "cramps." Which one you're on might make a difference.

Dee, I imagine your husband knows what he's talking about! ;D

I can't speak to the restless leg syndrome problem or its solutions, because I have always been a quiet sleeper. I have heard that muscle cramps may be related to low potassium levels. However, I do know that when I have extra potassium, as in orange juice or bananas or extra milk, then I definitely retain more water. Have been dealing with water retention since I was 29 years old and wore a size 5 dress, (1976) so it's not age or over-weight related, but my snoring might have started at around that time. I have to closely watch both my salt and my potassium intake, especially in hot, humid weather.

The guy who helped me where I got my equipment was not helpful. I was to get an envelope and send my chip in for review periodically and that has never happened. The clip kept falling off so I called. He has since retired and the lady I spoke with said I wasn't taken care of very well. She said I should replace the hoses and headpiece every 6 months. That came to $362 and the hoses aren't even gold plated.

Still have never sent my chip in. HMO so am stuck. But it was helpful to know that these only last so long.

Hope this is helpful.

My facial numbness & chest stifness/ pain that I had before being diagnosed with SA, which went away for months shortly after I started using my Cpap machine, has returned. I have had the same mask (full face mask) this whole time, since last December.... it has no cracks in it & as far as I can tell doesn't leak, but I'm thinking it is time for a new one, so If I can I will call & order a new one tomorrow... I pray it helps!

Not that bad, but annoying at times. I do know in hot humid weather especially to watch my fluids. The minute I don't drink enough, things swell up.

Hard because one of my jobs I work is on my feet.

I know it just seems like one thing after another. Let me know what your doctor says.

Do you all have terrible leg aches?
I am beginning to wonder if there is more going on with me than what they are saying.
My legs hurt and throb so much lately.
I do know that I am carrying a lot of fluid..more so every year...I have upped the lasix and the potassium but it just doesn't seem to be getting the fluids off and now they are suspecting CHF. OMG what next?

Zoe, when I had my sleep study done the nurse told me that I needed to talk to my primary care Dr. about restless leg syndrome because she thought that was a big part of my problem not sleeping....even more then the sleep apnea and I did and he put me on mirapex and it has done wonders for the RLS.

It's a miserable thing to have isn't it?

Anyone got any suggestions for dealing with the restless leg syndrome symptoms that appear to have come with my CPAP treatment.

I am now waking up in the night with pains in my legs, mainly the lower leg but sometimes the whole leg. The only way to stop it if it's bad is to sit up and move, then it goes. Sometimes if it's mild I can just wriggle my legs and that gives enough relief to get back to sleep.

I read this while researching the other day:
.....................
Secondary RLS is usually caused by or linked to other conditions, including:

* Sleep apnoea
(I deleted all the other possibles)

Hi KhatLady, good to hear from you!

It's good to know that at least they're working on some alternatives. Obviously many people - or their significant others - can't tolerate the masks. I think that sometimes the real IMPORTANCE of healthy sleep is poorly understood by both patients and doctors.

Thank you so much for posting this. I didn't see it and it is something to consider.

One of my friends has just been diagnosed with sleep apnea and it is her husband who is objecting to the cpap machine. We were joking that you would think it would be better than snoring.

Found an article on WebMD that sounds like, if you're having trouble getting to sleep, some melatonin, a hormone that your body normally produces naturally, which you can purchase without a prescription, might help. Here's the link:
www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/tc/mel
at
onin-overview

The article also mentions that, as we age, our bodies often produce less melatonin than when we are younger.

I'm guessing that, if you use air conditioning in the summer, your costs for that amenity may become quite high. Years ago when my mom was young, people who could afford it moved from the cities out into the countryside for the summertime. I guess in some areas that still happens. From here many go to the Upper Peninsula for the summer. And some people go from New York to Connecticut for the summer, too. I suspect the sleeping is easier.

We had more snow when I was a kid, too, and that was down in northwest Ohio. Back then things often stayed frozen from Thanksgiving until Valentine's Day unless we got a "January thaw!" Now it seems to thaw about every 10 days or 2 weeks here. Before long I'm betting those "snow birds" (people who live in the North in the summer and in the South in the winter) will be living in Canada in the summer and Michigan in the winter! And I don't like hot weather much, so maybe I'll move to Canada. ;D

After about 2" of snow overnight, it's beautiful and sunny here this afternoon, but cold - about 25 with a slight breeze. My Partnership Park Neighborhood Association is sponsoring a Fun Run / Walk tonight, and the Downtown Merchants have an "Eve on the Ave." here with fireworks at midnight. It's going to be really cold!!! I have not gone to any of this before, but am planning to go to the Fun Run / Walk to help at the warming-afterglow area. There are prizes for the winners: home baked pies!!! Am going to drink some tea now so I won't be sleepy.

I woke early this morning (about 3:30 I guess) and took off the nosepiece, did most of a crossword puzzle, and dozed on and off after that. When I awoke again about 6:30, my nose was dry from not breathing the humidified air from the CPAP. I may have to use my room humidifier tonight because the house air is getting too dry: it's down to 31% in my sitting room according to one gauge I have.

I was outside clearing the snow off the front steps and sidewalk for about an hour this morning, and enjoyed it.

When I have a chance, I'll ask my daughter what the pediatrician has said about it lately.

It could be habit, especially since she chews with her mouth closed when reminded. Still have her neck and nasal passages checked for blockage.

My granddaughter just had her eighth birthday. She was adopted from an orphanage in St Petersburg, Russia, and the first picture I saw of her, taken at about 4 mos, her mouth was open. She chews with it open and just generally has her mouth open all the time. She's a pretty girl, but at times it's just unattractive. She can close it when she's reminded, but I suspect she's just breathing through her mouth. If there's no anatomical reason, can it sometimes be just a habit?

I seem to remember that my daughter asked her pediatrician about it and was told there wasn't any physical reason for it. But that would have been several years ago. How early does apnea start, I wonder. Babies can have it, can't they?

My own guess is a small neck and passages. Not a bad idea to have the doctor check her out regarding that.

CHICORYA2, How old is your granddaughter? I know my great niece was a mouth breather and they ended up taking her adenoids out and that has helped, she was so bad when she was little that she would drool like you would not believe even after she had cut all her teeth. Maybe they should check into that.

I too am a mouth breather and have had time where I have had to tighten my mask. I use a full face mask and don't use a chin strap with that. If you continue to have air leaks, then you may need to go to a smaller mask or be fitted with a completely different type of mask. Also as you lose weight, that can affect how your mask fits your face. I am encountering this due to the fact that I am losing weight. If you read previous posts, you will find some wonderful site recommendations and alot of people who have had the same problems. Since I am not a RT or a doctor I would presume that I know what to tell you just what's happened to me. If your issues continue I would seek advice from your doctor or Respiratory Therapist. Good luck.

I really wish there was better patient education for this treatment. It would sure solve a lot of problems.

I'm a mouth breather and the only was i was able to stop mouth leaks was to go to a full face mask. I sleep with a heat humidifier and still dry out. I have tried chin strap and all nothing has helped. Does anyone have anyother suggestion i would love to hear from you.

Avoiding side effects of therapy

Some people experience side effects from CPAP. These can be resolved if you take the time to understand what might be causing the problem. Below are a list of potential side effects and what can be done to avoid them.

MOUTH LEAK
Mouth leak occurs when someone using nasal CPAP therapy attempts to breathe out of their mouth and the pressurized air from the CPAP escapes through the mouth. The result is a high unidirectional flow of air through the nose and out of the mouth, which can disrupt sleep and cause excessive drying of the airways.

Solution
To help to reduce mouth leak and its side effects, we recommend using a heated humidifier. Research has shown that heated humidification can reduce the incidence of mouth leak by half. Heated humidification also alleviates upper airway drying caused by mouth leak.

GURGLING IN THE TUBE OR CONDENSATION:
Although a humidifier is effective at reducing your nasal symptoms, condensation can accumulate in your tubing as a result of the temperature difference between the inside of the delivery tube and your room. Condensation can cause disruptive gurgling noises and mask pressure instability that adversely affects your therapy.

Avoiding side effects of therapy

Solution:
The best solution to avoid condensation is to use advanced humidification technologies such as AmbientTracking Plus, auto adjusting humidity that minimizes condensation or ThermoSmart, heated breathing tube technology which completely prevents condensation* (both by Fisher & Paykel Healthcare). If you do not have access to these advanced technologies the only solution is to try turning down your humidifier setting and to keep your delivery tube under your bed-covers.

*Subject to the operating conditions specified in the applicable Operating Manual

SKIN ABRASIONS/FOREHEAD DENTS:
Damage to the skin on the nasal bridge or forehead is caused from excessive tightening of your mask.

Solution:
Loosen the straps on your mask. You should not have to tighten your mask excessively to prevent leaks into or around the eyes. If your mask is not sealing well it may need replacing (masks should be replaced at least once a year).
