The elephant nose idea is great. I will have to add it to my repertoire of fun things to do with the cpap.

Polkamama,
Maybe we could come up with an elephant dance to go with the whipping hose. We could call it "The Elephant Polka". I do love a good polka played on an accordian.

Gumbiemama,
I have an extra hose, I think I will take it to school to demonstrate to the kids the wind whistling noise. Thanks for giving me the idea.

C-pap's besides being healthy can provide some fun if you take a moment to accept it as a way to take medicine. Taking medicine can be a drudge,, or it can be fun depends on how you want to make it work for you. This is a mindset, and lifestyle change and not just a quick fix. Think on that for a moment and see if that makes sense to you.

I'm sure that the source of the comment was the hose.

Who hasn't had that thought?
Though I have to say that my husband resists the fighter pilot concept.

Hey, maybe I will try that one. I will have to make sure my grandsons are here so they can have a good time laughing at me.

That is funny! When I first started wearing my cpap, I told my husband that I looked like an elephant. I always swing the tubing around and think of it and smile. My DH doesn't mind. It gives us something to smile about before going to sleep.

I love my CPAP and everything that it has changed for me in the last 9 months since I started using it. Yesterday my nieces saw me wearing my mask for the first time, with the big tube coming from my nose, and broke out into giggles. Then they shouted YOU LOOK LIKE AN ELEPHANT!! I made the best of it and made some elephant noises at them which made them giggle some more. If they were considerably older, I might have felt pretty hurt. Still, I can't get that image out of my head. I hope the elephant comment was just because of the tube coming from my nose!!

Kimmer, it is good that you are on a cpap. Already, you are seeing healthy benefits from its use. As for weight loss, I didn't lose lots of weight. I have had to work hard with exercise, healthy eating, watching calories and etc., to lose 14 pounds. I am on a stand still now and have been for a few months. If you lose weight, using your cpap, that is wonderful. I think perhaps it helped me to lose some. What I love about the cpap is how much better I feel and for knowing it will keep me from perhaps dying.

For those unsure about having something on their face, I can't even wear a scarf over my face on cold winter days. That mask is over your face, but it's blowing AIR! Your brain figures it out pretty quickly.

There are also many different types of mask, including nasal only or nasal pillows which hardly touch your face. The trick is to find the mask that you're most comfortable with. I went into the sleep lab I was using early on in my BPAP use during the day and tried out different masks. Actually, I had one in mind that people had been raving about at Sleepnet.com. Except for my inability to keep my mouth shut during sleep, which required some creativity on my part to compensate for, the Dream Seal nasal pillows was a very good mask for me.

As for "sexy," no the mask and machine are not sexy. However, being healthy and Alert is! And machine use is certain sexier than an early stroke or heart attack.

I haven't had quite the success with weightloss and exercise, or alertness, yet, but as was pointed out, years of sleep deprivation takes time to overcome. I'm so much better than I was before treatment that it's kind of scary to think about what level I was functioning at for all those years.

That's true...thanks! I think you will also be happy to know that, after thinking about this for a few weeks and debating it like crazy, I have decided to go ahead and get the cpap machine. My appointment at the sleep center with the machine is Sept. 10th. I really hope this works for me.

The teacher in me is popping out again..... The cpap will be a great way to weed out the wrong kind of guys. Slip it into casual conversation right away on the first date. Who knows...Mr. Right may have his own cpap or another health issue he is unsure of sharing. Radiate happy confidence. It is a sure way to make our guys forget about the cpap and notice us instead. You wouldn't think less of Mr. Right if he revealed he was using a cpap. You would be pleased with his honesty. You would also be very uncomfortable if he started whining, moaning and acting embarrassed about it. So....here it is again. Radiate happy confidence.

I think it is great that your husbands are on board with having the machine. My deal is that I am single and it's a little scary to think about meeting someone and getting intimate just to have him see the machine right away. I'm sure it will scare some men off. I know...if he can't like me for who I am then he's not worth it, but........

This is a great thread. I am sorry I have been without internet for so long.

Sexiness is an attitude. A good sense of humor combined with a loving attitude and some confidence will make all the difference in the world.

Several months ago we had a thread going with all of the fun things you can do with your cpap equipment.

1) pretend the hose is a boa and hum the strip song.
2) pretend you are Darth Vader, and watch Star War movies.
3) Pretend you are a jet pilot, play the theme from (Top Gun)actually "Take My Breath Away" from the same movie is better and more appropriate for us cpap users. Check it out on You Tube if you don't know the song.
4) The white noise from the cpap is very soothing. Add some fans, mosquito netting, and misting bottles and pretend you are at a south seas get away.

Enjoy the health benefits from your new machine. If you are thrilled by it, your husband will be too.

KIMMER827;

I have had my S-pap since February. It took a few weeks before I noticed a weight loss. then I lost over 12 pounds after sitting there for a long time at the plateau. Just be patient and it will. It takes a bit for your body to get caught up on the rest to start the healing process and the weight loss as well.

your body needs to regroup after all the sleepless nights which can be years since your last good night of sleep. It won't happen over night. It took time to get as bad as you are before the machine. It will happen.

Speaking of thinner, I'm just two weeks into the CPAP use, and I think I'm eating emotionally because of the big adjustment. Can anyone give me a pep talk and tell me I'll start losing soon? I know I have to make lifestyle changes, but before when I'd try to lose, it never worked. I did a lot of reading and found that when you have apnea, your body stores fat for no good reason. So, I know I'm beginning to have more energy and will be able to re-start my exercise program, but right now I'm doing some nervous eating, I think.

I'd love to hear some stories about how people started using their CPAP and lost weight soon after!

Think of your C-pap as medicine to make you feel better. It is a tool that you use for better health. Yes like all tools it takes time to learn to use them and to get comfortable with them. But the benefits are really worth the effort you have to use to learn to use and get used to the machine. When you think of it as medicine for a healthier and better rested and even a thinner you it makes the whole thing easier to get used to the machine. If you are uncomfortable with the mask talk to the Dr. and see if there is another mask that may work better than the one you have.

While CPAPs may not be sexy--they are meant to save your life!

Remember that Sleep Apnea can make your heart work harder because your oxygen level can go very low.

I also was worried about my husband, but he has been very supportive. Even our little dogs who sleep in our bed don't mind my mask or the sound the air makes through the exhaust vent. And my husband doesn't have to sleep with ear plugs anymore so he doesn't have to hear my snoring!

This is a life changing event and we just have to adapt and know that we are having an impact on our health.

I have been using the CPAP for about 2 months now. I use the Resmed LT Swift for Her nasal pillow mask and really like it. Now much to deal with as it doesn't cover your face.

Hang in there!

Peg

We are all here to help each other. Hopefully, a statement someone makes on here will help us to make better choices for ourselves. I have read lots of good info on here to steer me in the right directions. The best attitude to have, is not to become upset, but try to learn something valuable that will enrich your life. We should be loved by our hubby, family & etc., regardless of how we look. We all need encouragement. Sometimes we don't get it at home, but the more that you use this site, the more self-esteem you will develop. Believe in your self and all your good qualities.

I've used my new CPAP eleven nights so far, and it has not impacted my time with my husband.

I felt the same way as you at first, but now I realize that when I'm rested, I have more energy, if you know what I mean! Besides, when you climb into bed you don't have to put the mask on right away!

I have to agree that they are not sexy at all. That, paired with the fact that I do not like to have anything on my face, has kept me from getting one.

BACKINSHAPEIN08 ;

C-paps and Bi-paps may not be sexy dear. You need to ask your self this question: "Do I need to be sexy or do I need a better night sleep that is healing and makes my weight loss easier and myself a healthier person since I started using it???????

I count myself lucky that I have my s-pap and my husband loves the fact that I am a healthier, and better rested person, and not so tired anymore. That I have more energy to do the things I love to do and have the energy to do the things with the grandkids and the great--grandson as well. no I won't be trading my machine for any reason except a better model.
