I found out why I can't totally eliminate my gastric reflux with diet! Turns out I have a hiatal hernia. The only way to fix it is surgery. I'm seriously considering it. The alternative is to stay on Dexilant. Even though I've gone to a half dose, it's created polyps in my stomach as a side affect of the medication. I'm talking with my gastroenterologist about surgical options in a few weeks.

Anyway. It's kind of a relief to know that diet alone can't fix it, because I was frustrated that I couldn't get off the medication by myself.

Lots of other medical stuff going on, which is why I haven't been online much. Skin cancer removed from my hand. Nodule on my lung which requires another CT scan. A few other little things. But diet-wise, I'm doing awesome. I continue to lose weight, and the lighter weight will help with almost everything else!!!

Okay -- still very early, but 8 days in, pre-breakfast blood sugar levels down 60+ points and my hands (which were aching every day) haven't hurt at all for the entire time. I've also been sleeping well for the first time in years! Cannot wait to continue on the road to better health!

What a great thread!!

About 15 years ago, I kept trading sinus and urine infections back and forth. I was on antibiotics for an entire year. One of my doctor's partners was an allergist and he put me on a strict rotation diet to help me identify my allergies.

He also insisted I eat organic food and nothing processed. That meant all sweets went out the door. My skin cleared up, the infections stopped recurring and I lost 10 pounds in six weeks.

Then he told me to start adding back all the foods. I was incredulous! That began my journey of me taking ownership of my own health.

I started seeing a chiropractor who is known for helping people eat better in our town. I lost about 25 pounds, my joints stopped aching, I got of all my meds except Armor (my thyroid runs low) and I stopped getting sick. I never get sick and this has been ongoing for over 15 years. My weight loss stalled though. I'm an official Weight Watcher flunkie. I can't count all those calories. It makes me think about food all day!

Lately meat just doesn't taste right to me. My chiropractor also pointed out that even though I'm compliant in staying off junk, he doesn't think I eat enough vegetables. That led me to Eat to Life.

I have the old book so I'm not sure what "nutarian" officially means but I try to follow his plan to the letter. Occassionally I have a bite of my husband's meat and usually find it still doesn't taste right to me. Most important to me (because overweight and over fat isn't healthy) I'm losing weight again.

I agree that this lifestyle works not just for weight loss but for overall wellness.

It feels so good to type this out and to be able to say I don't even take aspirin - let alone all the heartburn meds, antibiotics, cholesterol drugs, and constant meds for sinus headaches. I guess I'm lucky in that I love vegetables and crave them constantly. It's fun to be on a plan where you have to eat "at least" 1 pound of your favorite foods every day.

I started following Dr. Fuhrman's guidelines in early April. I just had blood work done and my cholesterol has gone done significantly, my blood pressure has gone down enough to cut my (last) BP medication dosage in half. I'm not anemic (in fact my iron is a little high now). A year or so ago I was told that I was pre-diabetic, but my average sugar levels are well down in the normal range now.

This stuff really works.

I don't have a complete story yet but the most dramatic change for me is the decrease in my fibro pain from eliminating added sugar from my diet.

It's too soon to be certain about this helping, but a couple of days ago I felt like I had a migraine coming on. Usually I have to take drugs to make it go away. I propped myself up on my pillows (laying down makes them worse) and rested for a bit. Without taking any meds, the almost-migraine went away. I can't recall that happening before.

I've got my fingers crossed, because migraines have plagued me most of my adult life.

On the other hand, I was a little hasty going off my Dexilant (gastric reflux). It was much milder, but it did come back after a few more days. I'm going to try a half dose and see how I do.

I find that even the thought of fast food or junk food is almost nauseating. Even when people are eating it right in front of me. I had one second thought when someone was eating chocolate today, but then I remembered that it never tastes as good as I expect it to, and that it sometimes triggers migraines, and I didn't have any further trouble.

A friend of mine who's been doing this for the last year lost 35 pounds and brought both his blood pressure and cholesterol down into low normal range. Prior to that both were too high. I'm really hoping the same happens for me. I'd love to get off my blood pressure meds.

Several years ago, I listened to Dr. Fuhrman's podcasts, many of which were in the form of online radio shows that he hosted or guested. Many, many of his readers/followers called in with success stories. You can also read success stories on his website. I agree that not 100% of people who are Eating To Live will completely cure or avoid any form of disease. However I believe that the more fully you stick to the plan, and your weight is in a healthy range, many conditions are minimized and helped. Personally, I saw my blood pressure and weight to get into a good healthy range.

Hoping you continue to enjoy this eating style!

Debbie

I can relate. I had acid reflux until I started eating better and losing weight. No longer a problem for me. Thankfully! Feeling better over all is worth the dietary changes.

Wishing you all the best and continued positive changes!

You can do this! I believe in you. You ARE doing this!

Dr. Fuhrman makes a lot of promises about health with his books. He claims that we can go off medications and cure disease. I'm always skeptical of such claims, because I know very healthy people, with very healthy diets, who still get cancer, or whatever.

BUT, I can easily see how many diseases will be helped with this way of eating.

I think, but am not 100% certain, that I've already done it.

I'm on a bunch of medications. One of which is Dexilant for gastric reflux. In the old days, I was living on TUMS everyday. I tried over the counter Prilosec and had a very bad reaction to it. So I finally went to an ear/nose/throat doctor and he put me on Dexilant over a year ago. It was like magic. Finally I could sleep. Finally I wasn't in pain.

This week, there was a mixup with my medications and I've been without my Dexilant for two days.

No gastric reflux.

I'm not quite ready to declare success, because it's only been two days, but I'm pretty sure that the way I used to eat by the second day without it I'd be in some pain, especially when laying down. I've got my fingers crossed that I can permanently eliminate this medication from my daily routine.

How about you? And success stories to inspire us?
