REJ- thanks!! he is the baby lol

I have 4
Eldest is non binary - gender neutral- if anyone has watched Billions and has seen Taylor?
and so uses They as a pronoun
Then 2 daughters - one of which is on the radio as a reporter and my youngest- which you see here graduated Stanford last June

-so homeschooling worked!

I am focusing on a house- the house itself is fine- but what I like is across the street is a wildlife refuge and I think that will motivate me to begin a career as a nature illustrator.

Hope all is well for all!-

Christine -yes cheese is addictive. Dr. Barnard's book is a good one-REJ. And sometimes we do just do the best we can. I like how it takes a few meals and we can get reset and the benefits

REJ- we have a great mushroom farmer at ours too- told me to dry saute lions mane by squishing it down- delicious!
-thank for the reminder!
I will try to get to ours this weekend.

I FINALLY did what was on my training schedule for the race...it is only 4 miles tho so I should be ok. Still I'm not up to my usual energy with the running. BUT I will get there!

Tomorrow I have speed intervals and will get to the pool too.

At the farmers' market, yesterday, I purchased some Red Russian Kale. It's a delicate type of kale that can be used in a salad. I could never figure out how people ate kale in salads. It's so tough and hearty. I eat a lot of kale, but I gently cook it. This delicate kale was definitely heartier than, for example, romaine lettuce, but it had a delightful peppery kale taste. Now I know which kale to buy for salads! emoticon

Dr. Barnard wrote a whole book about cheese and how addictive it is. Salt and cheese were the two most difficult things for me to stop eating when I became a nutritarian. I can't say I NEVER consume them, but it's very rare. I hope that the renovations in your home are going well and that the work will soon be over. Until then, just do the best you can under the circumstances. emoticon

I went to a local farmer's market with my niece today. I knew that one existed, but I didn't know where it was held. Now I do. emoticon It was fun to choose fresh greens and stuff. It was a nutritarian dream come true! (Always some kiosques to avoid, but most offered healthy produce.) But my greatest find was mushrooms! All kinds. The vendor was explaining so many things to me. I purchased some lion's mane and other mushrooms I've heard about and wanted to try. My niece explained that he is one of the best-known mushroom experts in Quebec. I'm planning to go back there often! I wish I had been more proactive about discovering where it was at the BEGINNING of summer! emoticon

Last monday the renovation of our bathroom started and it's been a tough week for me. I could not stay home because of the terrible noise and spent a lot of time sitting in a café just to be away from home. Could not make my usual lunches with soup and salad. Had bread with cheese for lunch as there were not too many options, and promptly noticed that I got addicted to the cheese. It was interesting to see how the cheese caused me the same problems sugar has often caused me: cravings, getting overly emotional and grumpy, feeling down and lethargic.
I thought that having 1 to 2 servings of cheese per day for just a week or so would be all right. Not.

Up until today I was 'sugar free' for 27 days. Today I gave in and had 1 cookie. I intend to just continue being 'sugar free' and to also cut out all cheese. I was avoiding dairy most of the time in the past year (or maybe even longer). I'm a bit amazed to see how addictive it really is to me.

AQUAFABA - On the HelloNutritarian site, we read "Dr. Fuhrman did a whole segment at his Culinary Getaway in May called “Trending Nutritarian Ingredients and Techniques” and aquafaba was featured all over that presentation!

Instead of using plain-old-boring-non-viscous water in your hummus recipe, you’re going to use this magic bean juice to turn up that creaminess!"

From that post, I deduce that Dr. Fuhrman approves of the use of aquafaba.

I've been away from spark again for a long while...can't seem to get back into the habit of posting, long term. Nice to see people I knew way back when, still here.

I'm sticking pretty closely to Eat to Live principles. I eat tuna occasionally. I also will add olive oil to stir fried tofu/veggies. I sometimes have salt in my food as well. Other than that, I'm compliant!

I also am gluten free now, as I've found my body doesn't respond well to it.

I haven't been able to lose weight eating this way, though, until I added intermittent fasting to my regime. I eat from 8:30am to 4:30pm. I usually stop eating by 2, though. So, my weight is finally going down. I've been doing this for a year, but I had a few months where I was struggling with food choices and with was making too many exceptions with my eating window. I've found that I'm one of those people that can't have any exceptions to my eating rules because an exception can derail me for months. Before, I was just losing and gaining the same pounds, over and over, going between 180 lbs and 200 lbs.. I'm at 169 lbs now, which I haven't been at in 10 years. I haven't been exercising at all and am trying to add that in now because I have so little energy and am hoping exercise will be the missing link to revitalize energy for me. I'm still homeschooling 2 of my 5 kids and really need energy as the new school year looms near.

Well, that's my update for now!

Love,

Helen

Thank you for the elaborate thoughtful answer to my question, REJ!

I just learned today about the 'Daily Dozen App' by Nutritionfacts and was amazed to be able to download it right away, for FREE! I really like it!

It IS emotionally draining. It is good to get it done too.
I look at ti as a gift to my kids when I can pare down.

I'm able to batch cook this afternoon/ Saturday afternoon. Open houses are also time consuming!

One thing to be glad of is the clean up after Eat to live meals- no grease from oils or from cooking animals.

- I have been reading about uric acid too as Of all the animals that include meat in their diet, man is the only one that is unable to break down uric acid to allantoin. This is due to the fact that man does not possess the necessary enzyme, uricase. This inability to break down uric acid leads to an increased possibility of it accumulating in the body when animal products are eaten. Uric acid is an intermediary product of metabolism that is associated with various pathological conditions, including gout.

I'm happy the food I eat does not have to be handled with care nor does it create grease that has to be cleaned up in kitchen as well as in my body.

Anyhow! Soaked some aduki beans will cook those in instant pot.
I am glad I bought that- only reason I did was stove died and I looked at tha tas an opportunity.

ETL can be a challenge because we have to do it in real-time and amidst the stress and challenges each new day brings. I agree that sorting our belongings before a move is very stressful. And for me too, books were among the hardest things to get rid of. I had 3 bookcases and whittled it down to 1. I found the task to be emotionally draining.

And we don't necessarily have the energy to prepare a nutritarian meal when we feel drained. (That's where prior food prep is key!) I'm glad that ETL is not about being perfect. Like you, one good nutritarian meal helps me to get centered again. It's a reminder that that's how I want to live my life. emoticon

yes- I agree about environment.

Fat and salt are triggers for me. I can have one sweet and move along- so for me I need to avoid things like pizza- talking about the take out kind or for that matter cheese.

Some stress going on as I house hunt with my husband. He had to move his office last year and is just getting over that. So I am being patient. Really tossing and purging . Bags of things- clothes I was haning on to. Toss..toss donate..etc.

Books- etc- keeping a few. That is harder. Meanwhile I let things slip a bit but not to far. What I love about eating this way is one really healthy measl- say black beans and quinoa and sauteed greens and salad gets me back on track.
- it is really a matter of consistent prep for me.

Not so much a linear process. Just trying to spiral up instead of down.

Temptation on a scale of 1 to 10 - It depends.

If I walk into a grocery store and there are pastries in the entrance (for example), the temptation is about a 2 or 3. But if I buy one, it can jump to a 4 or 5 the next time around (reinforcement).

As far as chips (or other salty snacks) are concerned, they are a temptation pretty much only when I attend a get-together where they're being served, because I haven't bought any in so long.

Also, it's always more difficult to eat nutritarian if I'm invited to someone else's home or a restaurant. I mostly try to eat at home because I can control things so much better. When I'm tired or anxious or bored, I'm more tempted to eat. I heard that we shouldn't eat when we're worried or upset because our body doesn't register when we've eaten enough and we don't digest well. And I do have trouble gaging how much I've eaten if I'm worried. Before I know it, I've overeaten, even if it's nutritarian food.

When I eat at home, because my refrigerator and pantry are well stocked with nutritious choices, the temptation to eat non-compliant foods is very manageable, about 4 or 5. It can go higher if I'm upset, but if I do overeat, it's on healthy food. My biggest "secret to success" has been managing my environment.

No matter how slow you go, you are STILL lapping everybody on the couch.

Thanks for your answers Em! Yes let's say 10 means 'undoable' (9 means extremely diffiecult) and 1 means 'no problem at all'.

Yes I seem to notice that some people don't crave sugar after they've eaten it. Sadly I am not one of them. If I have one serving of ice cream or cake or such, I long for more and for five days after that my body 'asks' for sugar at the same time I ate that one serving.

I think to resist temptation for me is an 8 of 9... Though the number may vary depending on if I've been eating healthy foods or not in the past days, and on emotional circumstances. The last three times I gave in (after not having eaten any refined sugar for 2 or more weeks) had to do with circumstances such as visiting my father in the home / hospital and wanting to have an ice cream with him just to cheer him up.... having to arrange the funeral, later on and having my sister place chocolates right in front of me....... and staying with relatives I hardly knew during our vacation, being served cookes and cake that were especially baked for me, without gluten, while my cousin's wife was already struggling to make us meals without meat and gluten.... I did not have the heart to tell her I try to avoid sugar, as well....
Theoretically I could have said 'no' to those treats.... and they had big consequences as they led to that thought 'might as well continue' later on. But I hope that these circumstances will not return for a while now so I can get into a good routine with my eating.

Now that I am thinking about it I realize that it's that thought of 'I might as well continue to eat sugary stuff' that I need to adress. I know Judith Beck offers thoughts to countere these 'sabotaging thoughts'... I will look up what she wrote about that.

White- I am able to - unless tired say from my husband snoring. First night not too bad but if I get a couple then it is hard not to. Mostly that really. And I crave salt mostly so I find if I have some dulse- sea vegetables on a regular basis I am ok.

So- I had an ice cream cone with a friend. She an dI walked my town and then I had one. I am kinda lucky I guess because I am not craving any more.
Some people can't have anything like that as it starts many cravings

- also as part of the challenge I decided to go for 5 days of veg and fruits and seeds- mostly in the form of milk/dressings

-I can share that ..if I get the time..it has been waaaaay too busy for my liking!
oh right.. yes on scale of 1-10
10 being hardest??- not sure of scale?
I'd say a 2 I guess...

emoticon Welcome back, White! I hope that you've come back from vacation with renewed energy for some nutritarian self-care!

Hi Em. I think that being called a "hippie granola chick" is a compliment, even if you don't want to have a farm. LOL I understand it to mean that they see you as very comfortable with a lifestyle that's in tune with nature and healthy, eco-friendly living.

I have a question: Are you still tempted by junk food at the grocery store? It frustrates me that I'm still tempted when I walk by pies or cakes or other junk foods at the store. I'd like to get to the place where I no longer even consider that junk as food and am not tempted by it. The pull isn't as strong as it once was, but I can still feel it and I don't like it!

-Funny I did n't find Mic to militant. I too have an egg- when we were at airbnb there were chickens and we all had eggs. One of my kids took really good care of them. They kinda scare me- the chickens I mean.
Oddly enough there was a house that I looked at recently that had a coop with chickens and garden beds- well the seller said it would disturb the chickens if they had to move to so he was trying to sell them with the house. My MIL thought this house was perfect for me because of the way I eat.
Now- I do wish I liked gardening- I don't otehr than some herbs in pots and some flowers outside. And as for chickens-NO! People just like to box me in as ahippie granola chick..I don't want a farm!!!- nothing against those that do but i really wish people would stop lableing me that way

The other thing I do as for eating off plan- although wiht the small amount I don't think it is is venison. Sometimes a deer hunter will have some to share and I am ok with that -except I have not had any in over 10 years I think..so not sure now

It seems just by living a healthy life and eating this way that people are more attracted to follow and learn. I remember bringing my salads to nursing home and the food looked so vibrant. My Dad would sometimes have some too.

Beautiful day out!!
have a good one all!

I don't listen to Cheri very often either. She seems like a really nice person and she knows a LOT about ETL, but she just can't seem to get to the point quickly enough. Sometimes she seems to try, but all she does is talk faster, not use fewer words. LOL

I would describe Mic as a "militant" vegan. I am not. But he does seem to know his science and I have to admit that he sometimes has me laughing out loud! I'm just not a militant vegan. I'll have an occasional egg, and add cream to my coffee if there's no almond milk around. But I eat mostly whole plant foods, which I enjoy tremendously!

I am listening to the Obesity and Diabetes seminar with Jon McMahon. Susan Thompson's presentation on food addiction is very insightful. I know why the fairly strict boundries I've established for myself with ETL eating work, while "moderation" does not.

No matter how slow you go, you are STILL lapping everybody on the couch.

I sometimes listen to Mic the Vegan. He has a lot of good information... laced with a great sense of humour. But he's a bit too sarcastic for my taste. That doesn't stop me from listening to him when the subject especially interests me. I plan to click on the link you recommend when I have some "computer time" on the menu.

I almost never use milk products anymore. It was hard for me to give up cream and cheese. I now enjoy coffee with my homemade almond milk. (I did not like it with store-bought almond milk which is extremely watered down.) In fact I now PREFER it to real cream. I've added cream to my coffee when I didn't have access to my almond milk, and I tend to be disappointed.

We've been having amazing weather here too. Woo Hoo!

I celebrated my 69th birthday yesterday. I feel really good from eating this way too. Better than I did when I was a decade younger. Like you, I'm very grateful that I've found this life-changing information about healthy eating and living! My dad (92!) invited me out for breakfast at the restaurant. I had the pleasant surprise of discovering that 8 other family members had joined him (the sneak LOL!). I had waffles covered with fresh strawberries and banana. Delicious! The weather was magnificent, and I spent much of the day outside with my parents. The day was both very ordinary and very special... and I wouldn't change one minute of it.

Twenty-eight years of marriage. That's wonderful! Congratulations!

I hope that our friend White is getting some good weather and that she's enjoying her vacation!

A youtube - bit long but good. Mic the Vegan has a great channel

I always think back to Florence Joyner and her untimely death and she was a rep for the dairy council- very tragic.

Dairy- in all it's forms is not part of Eat to LIVE. Better health for us- and the industry itself is cruel. One of the hardest things for me to give up was cream in my coffee. But I did it!
-and actually I drink Earl Grey tea on some mornings or black coffee- it just has to be good quality coffee

Nice weather here
August already!
DH's birthday soon and our 28th wedding anniversary at the end of the month!

so- I am noticing as I am 58 and soon 60's I am feeling pretty dang good eating this way.
I am so grateful to know and to live this way!

REJ- I am really glad you like that mayo. I have played around making a dressing etc- I wihs I could half the recipe but it did not come out as well when I did. I think iti is the aquafaba that makes it creamy. Esp. as it sits.

Almond pulp- I compost. I tried making crackers once and they were not worth it. So just compost.

sprachgefuhl! Wow! emoticon

I'm liking that vegan mayonnaise more and more. It's great on sourdough bread with a slice of tomato. (I have to be careful not to have more than ONE of them.) I was surprised that the mayonnaise came out so smooth and creamy. Is it the aquafaba that does that? This recipe is a keeper for sure!

I have a question: When you make almond milk, what do you do with the resulting almond powder? I've been using it as the nut basis to thicken salad dressings.

Wishing you a healthy day too!

REJ- oh if grains spike your BP- then best do without/limit. I think some of us are better with and some without.
- well.. as for the mayo- don't tell anyone but you could put a 1T of good quality mayo in if your health conditions allow! I don't- I did get used to it but I honestly think 1 T of good quality EVOO won't hurt and could be just enough.
- as for taht I made my eldest's favorite potato salad to take to see the parents of their - friend (it is complicated) anyway we all had a good time- but the salad has veganaise in it- that mayo is better tasting than the kind with eggs in it- have had carnivore friends tell me that!
-I left the remainder of it with them-
and enjoyed a serving. No regrets!

Hi Em, I made the recipe for vegan mayonnaise that you recommended. Thank you. It's really quite good. I miss the oil in real mayo though. I hope that with time, my taste buds will continue to adjust to oil-free eating.

For sure grains "hit the spot" in a way simple veggies just don't. Some people can handle grains better than others. I have to be careful because they tend to spike my blood pressure if I eat too much. It sounds like you're doing great! emoticon

I'm doing well with my nutritarian eating, but I haven't been moving much. It's been quite hot and I tend to stay inside my air-conditioned apartment. Good side: trying new nutritarian recipes. Yum! Yum!

I think it's smart to make vegetable broth from scraps. (I'm not sure they're Tony Stark scraps though. LOL) But it's a great way to save money and not waste any of nature's bounty.

We've been having great weather here the last 2-3 weeks. It rains a bit at night, but mostly warm and sunny during the day. Ideal weather for those who are on vacation. I live in a small resort town, and a lot of people are walking around with big smiles on their faces. I'm enjoying all the fresh berries and vegetables that are abundantly available this time of year. It's a great time to be nutritarian!

REJ- even if it is slow it is going in the right direction
but it can feel like an eternity-
a kind of Zeno's Paradox!

Health is the main goal- I keep telling myself that and it is true.

I'm getting motivated to go back to running longer distances...however it is hot here! emoticon so I need to get up earlier or go later- most like get up early...I will talk myself out of it at end of day.

Smoothie for breakfast today and later on I will make a cucumber gazpacho- it is in a raw cookbook I have.. so won't post recipe- can't seem to find it online
The book is Going Raw by Judita Wignall
ah! ahaha
here it is
I don't have tomato - so will chop pepper and no fresh dill but will use a little dried in the blender

Thank you, Em. emoticon

My nephew's comment came at a good time. For such a long time, I was steadily losing weight so seeing the changes on the scale brought encouraging feedback. But now, the scale is barely moving anymore. This has always been a dangerous place for me. I have to get my encouragement from other sources like feeling great, having increased energy, reduced meds etc. That should be enough! But I'd still like to lose another 15 lbs. And it's getting tough to get those last pounds off. I'd have to want it as badly as you do and work at it as hard as you do!

ETL works!

Last week, my nephew from Alberta visited us in Quebec for the first time in 4 years. That means he hadn't seen me since I'd become a nutritarian. We went for a long walk together while he was here. He told his mom: "Everyone has gotten older since last time I saw them, except for auntie M. Last time I saw her, she could barely walk. She looks 10 years younger." That's what happens when you become a nutritarian and lose over 60 lbs.

It was welcome encouragement. It's important for me to remember where I come from so that I never go back there.

made some split peas- but I ended up extending some hummus and it was yummy.

I had corn on the cob for breakfast. Yum!- good protein.
I am enjoying the smoothies at end of day and I don't think I need to worry about protein.

Overcast today- nice though

Ran- later bike to pool with the have to do stuff in between

I am shifting over to more heavy protein breakfasts such as tofu scramble
Lunch centers around a salad and Supper is smoothies- I also have been adding in a bit of cold split peas- sounds weird but I am on a budget and it si after all the same type of protein as those powders that are so expensive

Great going on your exercise and nutritarian eating, Em! emoticon And congratulations on getting that scale to move downward.

I agree that one of the keys to success with nutritarian eating is having the right foods (like veggies, cooked beans etc.) on hand so meals can be quickly put together. It's more work, overall, than buying processed foods, but so worth it in the long run for both taste AND nutrition! Thanks for all the tips you share with us on the team!

Got out this morning before it was too hot and ran and walked 6 miles.
Feeling really good

Made a smoothie that hit the spot- included greens and fruit and flaxseed and home made almond milk and some coconut water.

Lunch- red lentil and roasted cauliflower and curry and brown rice and peas and cilantro and a huge green salad with avocado and roasted beets

Not sure of supper yet- I find cooking ahead is so key so it falls together

I have cooked chickpeas and am going to make a zucchini hummus- just basically cut up some zucchini and throw it in- lighter version and zucchini has a good profile nutritionally

got some cleaning etc.. and then hoping to get on bike later and go in the water

The scale is going down again!

Em: I see you're Vitamix is fixed and that your fridge is organized. You're all set up for success! And it looks like you're sticking to plan with your eating and movement. emoticon I love that picture of the trail you posted. It looks very inviting!

I find that if I eat nutritarian style, I'm less inclined to be tempted by unhealthy foods. I'm too full of the good stuff and I don't want to mess up my day. I'm glad I joined the local farm bi-weekly delivery service. It's an experience to open my box and discover what's inside. I'm learning about new vegetables. When I saw garlic flower in yesterday's box, I didn't know what it was. I had to google it. I'm looking forward to trying some. I've never had kohlrabi before either. I wonder what that tastes like. It's a taste adventure to look forward to.

Got fridge done- working on the 6 week plan and to follow with End of Dieting way of eating-living
over and over I see Dr. Fuhrman and Dr. Greger explain the path to health.
H=N/C
As Fuhrman says do not follow low carb-Atkins-Keto and this article is a good one: www.sciencealert.com/study-on-half-a
-m
illion-people-has-bad-news-for-keto-R>diet

"Fiber isn't just good for keeping your gut moving - scientists feeding diets rich in fiber to mice are discovering that the carbs, which can't be absorbed by the body, can help protect aging brains from some of the damaging chemicals associated with Alzheimer's and reduce inflammation in the gut."

Everyone- no matter how you are eating should take a B12- esp over age 50 and for some of us an omega 3- from and algae source- but I think there is a test you can take to see if you need to do that.

Huge salad + for lunch and will have another for dinner. About 90 degrees here

My fridge will not look like Kristen's as I don't have all those containers! But am going to organize today and will make cooked black beans for a taco salad and also make broth

I'm heading into this with the idea that this is the way humans eat!
I downloaded her check list and added no more than 1 cup coffee and no alcohol and added in exercise. hellonutritarian.com/wp-content/uplo

REJ- I have used the black salt- I won't be for my next batch tho- going all agressive on this eating plan!! - will see if it is a big difference. I bought the black salt a while back and the bag has lasted.. quite some time- I use it for tofu scrambles too- but it is intense and I will not use it for 6 weeks-
7/9-8/19 of 2019...I might find I don't even like it after that ! I hope!

yes- giving my DH time to get vitamix fixed old yankee style-buy the bearings and he has a tool shop putting them in..shall see.. just missed warranty! (of course)

Thank you, Em! I'm looking forward to trying that recipe. Just curious, do you use the black salt in your recipe? I hope your Vitamix gets fixed soon. I don't have a Vitamix, but I use my blender a LOT. Have a great day!

It sounds like you had a wonderful time on your camping trip, Em, and also got lots of exercise! emoticon

That beet bean dip sure looks good, I'm going to have to try the recipe.

It would be GREAT if you could get your fridge to look like hers!

I'm going to repost a request I made earlier, because it's quite far down by now, and maybe you didn't see it.
"When you get back, Em, would you mind sharing your recipe for the mayo you make with aquafaba and cashews. Mayo is still a challenge for me. I've tried a couple of no-oil recipes, but I didn't necessarily enjoy the results. I very rarely use canned beans either. I only use them if I forgot to soak my beans or something."

REJ- I too like the concept of nutritarian eating as the way. And following the healthy way leading to a healthy weight.

On my camping trip I brought and ate most of a bag of potato chips- at first I liked them and then I noticed how bloated I was during the hike. As I went out on the hikes the chips started feeling like non food.

on another topic-

Did you read the top story here on SP?
It says- "In one study, people 65 and over were 46 percent less likely to die if they strength trained at least twice a week compared to those who did not."
emoticon immortality?! through weight training? Sign me up! I am going to dust off those weights...seriously though I am under 2 years away from being 60 and I have let strength training go. I put together a program for that and can stick to it- one of the days weather permitting involves going to the park where they have one of those mini obstacle courses to do sit ups and pull ups so that will be challenging and like play.
The article I am talking about is this:

ok!
Have a wonderful nutrition filled playful weekend!
Get out and have some fun! Or stay inside and have some fun!! or both! emoticon

Hi White, In one of your posts you mentioned that you'd like to focus less on weight loss and more on other things. I've been thinking about that and it's a goal that I'd like to achieve too. Dr. Fuhrman tells us to eat for health and then go live our lives. The focus of our lives shouldn't have to be on food. Not any more than our lives should be focused on alcohol or drugs. But at certain times in the lives of addicts, they may need to focus on getting free from the addiction. My goal is for the nutritarian lifestyle to become so automatic and normal in my life that I don't even have to think about it anymore. It just becomes who I am and what I do. Then I can focus on other things while never neglecting my health in the process. I'm not there yet. It still takes a lot of focus for me to eat like a nutritarian. But I feel that things are going in the right direction and I hope that someday, it will become my new normal.

A while back, we were discussing aquafaba and I contacted Dr. Greger to ask about it. I received this answer on my Facebook page:

"There only appears to be one article published in PubMed on aquafaba! I'm not able to access the entire article, so unfortunately I cannot give you a clear answer (I don't think the article addressed health properties anyways). However, I cannot think of any reason why it would be harmful, other than perhaps containing contaminants such as BPA from the chickpea can.
%22aquafaba%22
Hopefully as more research comes out, Dr. Greger can address this in the future!
All the best,
Cassie, Health Support"
