I am still doing well as far as food, and soon plan to kick up the exercise bit. When on the road and I need a bite to eat, I have picked up fruit at the gas station. I know ridiculous price, but better than going through the drive through at some fast food place. But I look at it as what other choice is there...eat healthy or forever live over weight and in pain. I chose to pick up my piece of fruit or two and enjoy it thoroughly. I had some veggies tonight and realized I am beginning to enjoy the taste of them without added butter or salt. A much needed improvement that will serve me well. emoticon

The realization that I love junk food more than I love my self shows how addictive unhealthy foods are. I can't judge what I should eat by what I am craving. I have to make a choice based on what my body needs, not longs for until the chains of craving are broken.

I have found that by adding tomatoes and using oregeno I don't miss having dressing. When I first started 2 years ago I used Balsamic vinegar and a rasperry vinergerette but now I fine with them plain. I recommitted on Sunday and so far it's going well. 2 summers ago I was at my goal weight and felt fantastic eating to live but gradually I went back to the SAD. Good luck!

What I use for saald dressings: flavored vinegars, salsa (I especially like mango salsa), a dressing I make myself using vinegar, seasonings and nuts (blended in a high powered blender). There are a few dressings in the ETL book that can be modified for your tastes. I make one up for the week and keep it in the refrigerator.

I'm going to get a lot of vegetables and fruit today, then plan to start tomorrow. I'm still in the process of reading the book, but I'm ready to start.

I am planning to start the 6 week plan starting on May 15th, six weeks to the day I will have a Dr's appt. to see where my #'s are, and for my first weigh in, since March 20th. My question is
Are there any salad dressings allowed? What can we drink besides water? Can we drink green tea? I won't ask about coffee, because I put soy creamer in it, and that's not allowed. I want to be packed and ready for this mission!

Getting and staying healthy is not an option, it's a lifestyle.

Time for me to really get back at it. Over the last year I have let a lot of bread and starches creep back into my diet. I don't feel as good as I did when I was eating strictly on plan. I just read a few posts from below and have a couple of comments,

I had the most success when I had 3 pieces of fruit blended into a smoothie with 1T ground flax (ground about once a week and then refrigerated) and iced tea added if I needed something wet to get it to blend. For lunch: open a bag of lettuce into a big bowl. Add some cut veggies (tomatoes, avocado, carrot, celery, snap peas, zucchini, etc pick 2-3), a small handful of nuts or seeds, at least 1/2 cup of beans. Add some flavored vinegar, salsa or a dressing made from the book. Dinners were generally some cooked veggies and beans, maybe a smaller lettuce salad to go with it. Either soup, or some greens & onions.

About supplements. I feel that if you really are eating all of the veggies and fruits that are recommended, you don't need supplements for the first many many months. If you find that you really like the way you feel on this plan, then go ahead and buy and use some supplements (I think there is only one real "ingredient" that vegans need and your body has plenty of stores for the first year+). I have been 99% vegan for 1.5 years and I do take the Fuhrman vegan female supplement. Shop around. You can usually find for less than on his website.

So. Yesterday I went for a hike with a bunch of kids in a cave and ate relatively well. Today I am off to a good start with my smoothie. I need to figure out a way to model my day so that I consistently have exercise/shower time built in. I wish I felt comfortable leaving my son home alone in the early mornings...

Best wishes everyone!

Jana

Not sure which book you have- there are several, but you can use the menus as an example.
Make whatever similar concoctions are easier for you. It takes a while to figure out what works in your life but most of us eat the same or similar meals for a few days at a time so shopping and preparing are easier. Big soups and vegetable/bean stews can last a week or be frozen for later.
Just know that it takes quite a bit of figuring to get this running smoothly so whatever you can do in the meantime that resembles what ETL is recommending is good. And it will make you feel better. Don't be a perfectionist until you have given yourself time to adjust.

Reading the book carefully helps because you will learn why and that helps the guidelines to come naturally.
Good luck.

Hello. I have skimmed through the book ETL & am getting my kitchen set up with the right kinds of food getting ready for the challenge but am not sure how to work the menu plan. Do you just repeat week one & two a couple of times or do you stick with one of the other? Or are these only helpful meals & you can just your own pound each of cooked and fresh veggies with 4 fruits & a cup of beans or legumes? Recipes look good but I'm not sure that I could get everything together everyday for them.
I am also doing this for my son who has rheumatoid arthritis. I need to be able to have food on the go for him as well as myself, thing a a 21 year old will not find difficult to eat cold as he is gone for lunch daily & dinner sometimes.
Thanks for your input!

Day one was good all except for the cooked veggies. I had a very hard time trying to eat an entire pound worth. I ended up being a bit short on that but if I stuffed anymore into myself I would have been sick. I'm keeping it simple for now without recipes but I think I'll have to explore cooked veggie recipes to see if that helps me eat more of them.

Someday is today!

I'll be starting the 6 week plan tomorrow morning. It's going to be hard because I am addicted to unhealthy foods. I was eating a pretty good diet and then had some pizza and the cravings after that were overpowering. It was a major sign that I needed to make this change and make a commitment to seeing it through.

I was looking into the supplements on Dr. Fuhrman's website but with the shipping they ended up costing more than I had hoped to spend on supplements. So if any of you know of any alternatives that would be great to use on a vegetarian diet please message me. I'm new to the whole idea of vegetarian eating.

Someday is today!

I started the six week challenge on Monday 04/15/2013. I have already lost 9lbs. I can now see the tendons in my previously water retained feet! My friend has also lost over 40lbs and he started on March 2nd. He is going to continue the six week plan until he's at/close to his ideal weight.

It's only been a few days and the headaches are subsiding. I still want to tackle someone for their pasta though lol. My friend told me to give it two weeks and I'll notice that will change. I'm happy so far and the results are motivation enough for me to continue.

This is the right way to eat anyway.

After severe intestinal pain that was lingering for a week and a huge blowout (which actually made it better) on Sunday from eating a Gluten filled costco muffin, I feel much better and I am back at it a little more slowly. For some reason my body hates high fiber and it causes intense pain. I am adding more salads and beans this week to my diet. I made homemade chili in the crockpot and have fresh fruits and veges in the fridge. I also got Pad Tai for making at dinner and fruit for breakfast. I am going to keep it simple

Fruit or gluten free cereal for breakfast
salad and bean soup or chili for lunch
Tia food with cooked veges and salad or fruit for dinner. Or fruit shake, sataed veges and salad for dinner if I have my starch for breakfast.

I made a gluten/dairy/low sugar free cake and icing yesterday as a dessert and ate it for dinner because I wasn't hungry. After being so hurt and then ill I think I might add in some prune juice or lemon juice to cleanse myself out if this doesn't work.

I'm doing well with eating all my fruit, vegetables and beans. I'm even eating the ground flax seed. I find that buying so much fruit and vegetables is hard on the budget. I need to buy in bulk and check out more grocery stores and get the best price I can.

I'm still going strong. I had a stop where I was sick, but just wasn't able to eat anything during that time. So I didn't eat anything not on plan, just wasn't getting good nutrition. I'm still exploring recipes, and am finding a lot of things tasting the same. I guess partly because I didn't want to buy a ton of different veggies, spices etc and some go to waste. I did end up weighing myself because of going to the dr.... I have lost 6 pounds. I think I would have lost more if I would eat more. My body is funny like that...goes into starvation mode.
I feel very determined and accepting of this way of eating, and look forward to it being just the way it is, without having to keep my nose in a cook book, and search at the store trying to find what ever new product is in a recipe. I hate the learning curve with this, but that's life.
Feeling so much better. No knee pain, no back ache, and my feet are even feeling better. Still having some migraines that are triggered from sinus stuff that still is lingering.

The realization that I love junk food more than I love my self shows how addictive unhealthy foods are. I can't judge what I should eat by what I am craving. I have to make a choice based on what my body needs, not longs for until the chains of craving are broken.

Hi everybody!

I haven't seen many posts in the forums about the results people are getting with the ETL approach, so I thought I would re-post some information here. I have been following a low-fat, plant-based nutritarian diet for about a year now. I have lost about 10 pounds and have significantly lowered my LDL and triglycerides (they went from 152 to 132). I had lost more weight, but I broke my ankle and wasn't able to do much cardio for a while, so I am working my way back to a healthier BMI. My blood sugar and pressure have remained stable, which is fine as they were already in the normal range. My HDL is a bit low at 49 but since my LDL is 116, I guess it's fine. The ratio is now 3.9 which is just under the 4.0 considered to be "good". I think with more time in the lifestyle, my numbers will improve further. I feel great, full of energy, am rarely sick and enjoy a variety of foods because I follow the 90/10 approach to the diet. I like being able to enjoy my favorite foods like wine and dark chocolate in moderation and try out new, super-healthy recipies. I cook a lot of recipes from the Everyday Happy Herbivore cookbook. My sister also significantly improved her weight and health following this lifestyle. Anybody else have any similar successes to report? Has anyone reached a plateau and found a way to successfully break through it? Has anyone veered off course and gotten back on track? Do any of you follow a different approach, super-strict 100% vegan or 80/20? 70/30? I'd be interested in any information you have to share (and also any strategies for making tasty cappuccino without real milk; I like soy but not in my coffee!) :-).

WTG Lovestowalk49! Enjoy the changes to come. I am beginning my 3rd week. Last week was a bust due to traveling to Indiana for my father-in-law's funeral. We ate out ALOT and had meals brought into the home from friends and family. I tried to make the healthiest choices with what was available to me---that's about all I could do. Now I'm home and in charge of my food choices, so here I go again for week 3!

Tomorrow begins my second week. I have learned a few new recipes, but not enough that I am happy with what I have to eat.
My family is eating more veggies thanks to me eating healthy.
Migraines have stopped, but I have body pains, that keep switching spots, like feet or back...with no injury...just chronic pain. I am thinking with time this will change.
Feeling a bit grumpy too, because I want something realllllllly good to eat. I hope it will not be too long before I crave veggies. Just not there yet.
Still not weighing...tempted, but resisting. I want my focus to be eating healthy.

Sounds like you're seeing some great results with the 6 week challenge!! Me too, although nothing so dramatic. But am losing weight and feeling good. We've really enjoyed the black bean roll-ups in Eat to Live (even a visiting teenage friend of my son's gobbled them up), and also I bought the comfort soups cookbook from lowfatveganchef.com, which has been great. Really like the broth recipe and have tried 3 soups so far and they've all been very good. :)

I just love it when Eat To Live shows you what it can do. I stepped on the scale this morning and it was down 1.6 pounds!!! I know that a lot of that was over eating a couple of days ago, water, and sodium. I don't care. I love seeing that scale move down. So, the sun is shinning, I'm sitting here this morning drinking my smoothie of carrot, orange, strawberries, chia seeds, oatmeal, and almond milk and getting ready to go out with my garden club to re-plant one of our city parks. Go eat and move today.

Made it through my first day. And.... the family was eating a bunch of raw veggies at dinner time. :) That does make it nice. I hope I rub off on them lots!
Struggled with a migraine most of the day. Hopefully it won't be long and that will subside.
I tried a humus recipe. I need to tweek it to really make it a bit more tasty. But I never would have gotten down all those raw veggies with out it. Raw veggies are not my favorite. I wonder just how long it will take for me to start longing for them. I know it will happen with time.
Thank God for fruit!

Just started my 6 week challenge. I have had some knee pain, and spent a few days on crutches. That kind of kicked me into gear with this. Kind of hard on one side starting on Easter. But also fitting, I am so tired of being dead myself, and am ready to live again so to speak. :)
I didn't weigh myself, and on purpose. I don't want my focus to be on weight, but on health. I know the weight will follow if I stick to the plan. I want to be able to get around and move. I want to be healthy. I am 49 and feel like I am a near death 90. Pretty sure if this doesn't get turned around, I will be wheel chair bound before the year is out. I would rather choose a healthy lifestyle. So thought if I joined this group it would help me be accountable to someone that would understand the program and be encouraging.
Family is supportive, in that they want me to get healthy. But they don't want to change their eating. I hope being a good example, and becoming a very good cook with this program I will make an impact on them as well.

The realization that I love junk food more than I love my self shows how addictive unhealthy foods are. I can't judge what I should eat by what I am craving. I have to make a choice based on what my body needs, not longs for until the chains of craving are broken.

I was pleased to see the scale move down again this morning. Part of that was getting more exercise yesterday. I was out and moving about with a camera club which also meant that I wasn't at home wanting to snack. I will post a few more things on my blog if anyone is interested.

Down a small amount again this morning. Even if it is small, I'll take it. I'm headed out this morning to meet up with a local camera club and photograph so that should keep give me some exercise for the day. I'll have fruit and oatmeal before I go and that should hold me until I can find something in the ETL plan.

Glad to have others posting here also about their experiences.

Hi Rebekka,

I've been on the 6 Week Challenge now for 20 days, and it has been the most amazing, life-transforming experience of my entire existence!

Now I'm at a point where I need to learn to cook a few more things, because initially I was keeping it very simple--eating salads and smoothies and oatmeal. But now I find myself wanting some "real" meals once in a while; something I can sink my teeth into. And if this is the be the ongoing nutritional guide for my life, I'd better start learning ways to sustain and maintain it in the future.

So this upcoming week's goal is to try at least two new nutritarian recipes each week.

Whatever it is you are hoping to turn around, I can guarantee that by adopting Dr. Fuhrman's guildelines and truly committing to the 6 Week Challenge, you will see an overall improvement in life-quality.

Health. Appearance. Perception of Self. Mood. Perspective. Relationships.

A month ago, I was an old 47... and now I feel as though I am being born anew and being taken back in time to my early 30s or even late 20s. I'm excited about my upcoming 50s and 60s. Happy is my new default mood. And I haven't been happy for years.

Best of all, my pain is subsiding (both physical and psychic) and I am re-becoming my true self.

This way there be Magyk!

Suzanne

Just started 6-week challenge last week--although know that we're in it for the long haul. Although the week's had its challenges and I've been spending a lot more time in the kitchen and doing a lot of shopping, I haven't felt hungry or been craving things that are not on the plan. Has sometimes been a challenge to eat enough earlier in the day though. Am excited, though. I feel like this may offer some real hope--and I'd become pretty discouraged that I'd be able to turn this thing around!

Yesterday was a good day. I snacked a bit more, but all ETL foods and acceptable. Weight was down. This morning my weight was down, but just a bit so I will attribute that to my snacking.

Yesterday (March 20, 2013), I began another 6 weeks challenge. I had let my weight creep up since I first lost weight on my first 6 weeks plan in March of 2011. So I am back on track and will be posting more often and will be experimenting more with ETL foods and new recipes.

Hi. I, too, have just being the 6 Week Challenge (3/1) but in my mind I've already made the shift this becoming a long-term lifestyle. Not to say that I'm there yet, with the exercise and all, but I've gotten the way of eating down to a science now. Or at least, I've succeeded in having far fewer than 10% of my calories coming from non-plant foods, and usually none, for the last week since I officially began the challenge. And the rest of my calories fall more or less into the proportions Fuhrman outlines in his pyramid (not exact numbers but in the ballpark).

Initially I came to this for weight loss, but now I am in it for my health... and to get my life back! Something I did not believe was ever going to happen. I figure, if 99% of what I am eating eating is plant-origin whole food (eating an adequate amount of calories, ie in excess of 1200 but less than 1800/day), weight loss is bound to occur eventually. And fairly steadily. At this point, all I am concerned about is that the good feelings and return to health, stay and increase: Getting younger in the process is *awesome*!

I too suffer from debilitating fibromyalgia pain and migraines (and a host of other things), and it just keeps getting worse as the years progress. I feel like a pre-mature octogenarian at 47! Or did, before I started implementing the principles of E2L about a month ago. The improvement in my symptoms was the first thing I noticed. My once-daily fatigue is pretty much gone at this point, except for a little bit of wilting in the late afternoons. As my body continues to detoxify and heal, something which must use up a lot of calories in itself, I suspect this will cease to be the case. And my pain symptoms have lessened about 30%, not gone unfortunately. Headaches I get, but they are very mild and addiction-related, not full-fledged migraines (half blind, in the dark, nauseous, etc). --that, and the anti-aging properties involved that are still boggling my mind daily. For the first time in years, I am feeling around 60, not 85. And it gets better, literally, every single day!

This made me realize that I want make this way of eating permanent, for the rest of my life. Seriously!

I too did it gradually, *first* adding in more greens and other veggies, fresh fruits, and whole grains. Then I took two weeks to gradually cut-down on "off limits food" until I was able to eliminate it altogether. That's because I was already feeling so much better, just by consuming so much more produce. But it wasn't until March 1st, when I became committed to meeting the nutritional goals outlined by Fuhrman's pyramid that my health really started to bloom. Yes, I know, that's only a week ago. How could a week make such a difference? I don't know, but it has.

Oh, and by the way, I've lost a total of 15 pounds over the last month.

Reclaiming my health (and life) the nutritarian way....

Thank you so much! Day 2...not TOO bad...:). I have a toddler who has been a nutritarian all his life and he does not have a problem eating this way at all. In fact, when he sees me with my salads, he climbs up in my lap and tries to eat it all. :)

I am trying my best to stay on this "diet" until I have reached my goal weight. Then I plan to incorporate things like brown rice, sweet potatoes and maybe a little fish once a week. How were you able to follow it strictly? Also, I find myself not being able to consume the 2 pounds of raw/ cooked veggies because I am stuffed.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to Day 1!

I've been on ETL since December, following it strictly for the last month or so.

I had fibromyalgia and it is now gone.

I took small steps to arrive at a place where I could follow the plan strictly.

Good Luck!

Hi! I am new here. Day 1. Not too bad. I did have one m&m. :) My goal is to lose 60 pounds. I have gained 40 in just one year from steroids. I have fibromyalgia and have had recurrent bronchitis. The hardest thing will be meal time in the evenings with my children. Eventually, I'd like them to follow the same principles regarding food, but for now, I know that we are completely eliminating dairy. My weakness is pasta.

Glad I found this site!

I returned to the 6 week plan when I found SP and this team at the end of January. I had done it for the holiday challenge, but only saw non scale success.

However, after implementing an aggressive exercise plan, I have lost 6 pounds to date. It's not stellar, but progress. I have also lost inches, but I have not totalled them yet.I am envious of those who lose lots of weight during the process.

Prior to that I implemented the general ETL plan. It has taken me a few months to get most of the basics I needed to progress.

I am working with an old blender which struggles with everything I try to blend. I finally ordered a Vitamix, but I am still on a waitlist. By the time it becomes available, I will no longer be able to afford it! Such is life.

I was surprised last week with a food processor and a juicer. Woo hoo!

I am also doing a second "6 week plan." The first six weeks was very successful and I lost 15 pounds. I took a two week break where I was a bit more indulgent. I started the second 6 weeks on Thursday. I am hoping for another 15 pounds but am close to my goal weight so it might be a bit slower!

Hi Lisa, welcome to the team, and congratulations on your weight loss! Our weight does fluctuate from day to day, just look for the general downward trend. You are allowed unlimited fruits, but that would be whole fruits and not juice - the pomegranate juice is not part of the strict 6 week plan. The almond milk could sub for soy milk though. Do eat at least a cup of beans a day if you can. You can add some to smoothies, have some in soups and on salads, etc.

Here is Susan's guide to the 6 week plan:

I am new to this team! I am on Day 2 of Week 3. The weight came off so quickly at first & I only want to lose about 30 lbs. But, according to the book my weight should be about 95 lbs (I'm 5 feet tall) Lost 10 lbs already. Some days up, some down, can't figure out why. I have had small amounts of almond milk in smoothies & add some pomegranate juice to a oatmeal recipe I found. Just wondering if thats why ??? Don't always get the beans in, but am trying! I am definitely going to stick with this for at least the 6 weeks!

It is interesting seeing everyone's meals on here. I am sticking to the 3 meals a day. I used to snack all of the time. I also try to limit my fruits to 4 as there are calories there moreso than veggies. Correct me if I'm wrong, but almond milk & pomegranate juice are not legal the 1st 6 weeks??

Thanks!

Yes, NUTRISARA, I eat plenty each day-including snacks if I need them. I am eating 3 meals until I am full, and then if I get hungry in between I do snack on fresh fruit, veggies and a couple of cashews or sunflower seeds (raw). I have never been good at restricting calories, and everyone is always shocked at how much volume of food I consume. Definitely getting well over a thousand calories each day! The smoothies I have contain soymilk, banana, chia seeds and a date along with handfuls of kale and sometimes other fruit. The sushi I had was like 6 rolls! All stuffed with vegetables and the 2 ounces of avocado. I am only 5 feet tall with 20 extra pounds to lose, so it may be that I am not losing as much or as fast due to that? I have not cheated at all and I am eating over the 2 pounds of veggies per day, with fruit and big bowl of beans. Thank you for your input! Strength to you!

OONAOWL - are you sure that you're getting enough calories in your diet? I know that is a huge factor in weight loss. I know Dr. Fuhrman recommends only eating 3 meals a day. I haven't gotten to that point yet. If I'm hungry, I eat; so I'm basically snacking throughout the day. I also try my hardest to reach the 1 lb raw/cooked veggie rule and I also reach the 1 cup beans rule. My main fear was not eating enough calories throughout the day. So far I lost 7 lbs the 1st week and 2 lbs the 2nd week (I cheated this week which messed me up but I'm back on track). I don't know if this helped you at all but I wish you the best of luck OONAOWL!

Ok today and yesterday I am back up 2 pounds, meaning I have only lost one pound for week one. I am following plan to a tee, even upping my intake of raw to about 80%. I look ever so slightly smaller, but inches are the same and weight virtually the same. What am I doing wrong?
Sample menu what I am eating:
Green smoothie for breakfast
Raw vegan sushi and bowl of beans for lunch
Green smoothie for dinner again
(this is yesterday)
I have removed grains and am only eating allotted amount of avocado, seeds and nuts.

Day 5 of 6 Week Plan ETL aggressive vegan version. I am finally starting to lose weight! Down 3 pounds today :) I have removed grains from my diet by 95% and upped my intake of raw to about 80% of my diet. I have about 20 pounds to lose to be at the weight I wish to be. Really enjoying the process, even more now that I am getting results. To give an idea of what I am eating here is yesterdays menu:
Breakfast: Kale smoothie-4 large leaves lacinato kale, 1 banana, 1 medjool date, 1 cup soymilk. 1 TBSP chia seeds, handful frozen blueberries
Lunch: Huge salad of cauliflower, red cabbage, carrot, red onion & avocado (maybe an ounce) with homemade hummus dressing
Snack: tangerine and 5 cashews
Dinner: Winter Kale salad-russian kale, shredded beet and zucchini, red onion, sunflower seeds (small handful) tangerine with hummus dressing. 3 chickpea crepes curry-style
Dessert: 5 cashews, 1 banana, 1 date, small cup soymilk

I just joined the Silver Membership on the site and the recipes look great. You can't post to the Doctors on that one. I need new ways to cook beans so the 3 dollars a month is totally worth it.

It doesn't cost 100 dollars to join and post, I paid I think 20 bucks or so for 3 months worth of membership-long enough to know if I am going to stick with it & get some mentoring in the process. I got a "deal" at the end/beginning of the year for the holiday challenge. The gold membership is 30 bucks for first 3 months, you could try it out that way without having to spend a bundle.

Hi! I'm debating joining Fuhrman's site. I was going to just buy the cheapest membership but that won't give the online support because you can't post on the forum. What do you think? Is it worth doing the $100 membership to be able to post?

I started the 6 week challenge over again 3 days ago. I started it the first time about 2 & 1/2 weeks ago, but experienced no weight loss. I was following plan to a tee with sole exception of mostly cooked veggies and not much raw. After some expert help on Dr. Fuhrman's forum, I decided to relaunch myself a few days ago-greatly upping intake of raw veggies and reducing grains to none or only very little every few days or less. So far no weight loss still, but I am determined to make this work and will do what it takes to make it happen! I welcome any encouragement and/or insights here. Bless!

Bad, bad week. I got some sort of super bug and have been sick, home from work sick, since Monday. Somehow Dr. Fuhrman's food, veggies & beans, just wasn't what I wanted this week. Although the 1st day I made a decent soup. From there it's been processed Lipton soup, white crackers, eggs, and even some ham. Oh well, now that I've confessed my bad week I am hoping I can get back on track beginning tomorrow. Congratulations to everyone else here that has done such a great job.

Today, I canceled our milk delivery service. That was hard! We used to drink milk every day, usually more than once a day. My last glass was December 26th. After hearing the Engine 2 guy refer to it as "liquid flesh", I don't think I will ever look at a glass the same way again!

week 1 done--down about 5 lbs!! Now starting week 2. My only problem is the fridge space for all the fruit & veggies...(I'm gonna have to get my own fridge so hubby has room for his stuff..LOL)

I found a recipe on "Engine2Diet" page for a Pumpkin Chili---VERY GOOD!! I have been using it as a topper on my spaghetti squash. ( i didn't use the Boca meat..just added more
beans)

My other staple is the ETL Sunny burgers....make a bunch & add them to salads.

Officially two weeks down. Weekends are hard since we tend to eat out more (and run a food-based business where EVERYONE wants us to try their food!), but I'm down about 5 pounds total. Have a goal of losing three more this week. Really trying to stay on track. Baby steps!

I had picked Wednesday (after the dental appointment to begin) and decided to treat myself (so wrong) with a good last meal. So last night for dinner, I had fish (tarter sauce) and baked French fries (ketchup) (meat, starch, and sodium).

I woke this morning, not only feeling swollen and stiff, but weighing more! So, why wait? I am starting now. I will get back to a stricter ETL and get as much water and moving around in as possible today. Here’s hoping I will feel better tomorrow.

Okay, I'm going to get back to it. I have been dealing with periodontal and other dental issues since the middle of December and I hope after Tuesday, I will be released by my doctors to go back to eating what I want. I can finally get back to ETL. I haven't done badly, but I have gained a few pounds and I would like to drop those and get over the cravings I have had from the holiday sweets and treats. So, I'm picking Wednesday to be my day 1 again.

I would love anyone's tips and new recipes. I will probably go back listing and to photographing some of my food on my blog.

So just finished week 5 on Wednesday and down 18lbs and feeling really great. Had a couple "more hungry" days but kept myself busy so i wasnt thinking about food and drank more water and got through it. No more brain fog or headaches. Did have a plateau but ate more vegetables and started to lose weight again. I am finding that I am not even craving the foods I used to eat and I want to stick to the plan. Hoping everyone else is doing well on it:) emoticon

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again :)

I was not sure I should even stay on the team but this way of eating is something I am going towards - so I will continue on in baby steps - I am trying to catch up here too emoticon

I read Eat for Health on my way home from vacation and decided that would be the first mission on my "Even More Happiness Project" - to get healthier! I've been on the plan 11 days, so thought it was probably time to join the challenge. I've already lost about 5 pounds and have 35 more to go. I would say I'm probably somewhere between phase 2 and phase 3. Biggest challenge - eating a salad every night at dinner. I like veggies, but raw is much harder than cooked!

Thanks, GOTTAPLAN4U and DS9KIE. Your responses were very helpful.

I read the sections in the book on true vs. toxic hunger. I have definitely experienced the withdrawal symptoms that he describes in the book when going off bad foods in the past, although not on this go-round as my diet was already pretty healthy.

Thinking back to my very hungry day, I think it was a combination of needing more calories (I worked out for 30 minutes and walked 3 miles that day) and needing more variety. I made a salad dressing myself today and I think that's a good start. I love my lunch salad and my morning smoothie, so I think adding in a starchy veg or grain or some beans to dinner will help. Unfortunately, bean soup for dinner will not go over with my husband.

This is such a wonderful community. I'm glad to have found it!

NUTRIPSYCH, if you are truly hungry you should eat - even an extra meal if that is required to satisfy hunger during your day. Fuhrman warns against snacking because it keeps us from experiencing hunger and prevents our body from completely detoxing after each meal. Hunger is the body's signal that the detoxing is complete and it is ready to receive new food. If your metabolism and activity level require more food then this is the way your body tells you.

However, if the hunger is really just a craving or lamentation of foods that are not allowed or if it is just a reaction to a time when you have been used to snacking then it should not be honored. That is the case Fuhrman warns us against.

Your meal plan sounds great. My personal experience is that I do better when I include a source of oil in all my meals. (I believe it aids in digesting and accessing all the oil soluble nutrients.) I add ground flax to my smoothy, dribble cold pressed seed oils (pumpkin seed, flax, sesame) on vegetables, or sprinkle the ground seeds on salads and vegetables. I use a little more oil in total from seeds and nuts than Fuhrman recommends. I also use cold pressed coconut oil occasionally.

I use less starchy vegetables than ETL recommends, usually in soups or cooked veg dishes. I make a cold sweet potato salad with pinapple, celery, sweet peppers etc that is wonderful. And I only rarely use grains - only quinoa and whole rices. I would not turn down the odd grain like barley if it were served to me but definitely no wheat. This is just what works better for me.

first of I think if your hungry eat a fruit or a veggie, at anytime even if furhman say only eat for the meals, what you don't want to do is get sooo hungry you will eat anything. You will get used to eating this way.

Get my starchy veggies or grain (when you say carbs are you saying grains?) at any meal. Sometimes cereal in the morning sometimes sweet potato for lunch or dinner or rice with stir fry or a tomato sandwich with Ezechiel bread, well something like that.

I mainly put nuts and seeds in my salads, and in oatmeal and i put chia , hemp or flax in my smoothies (or all three mixed) as well.

Hi all.

So, some questions. I was starving yesterday by the end of the day. I'm wondering whether I'm (a) doing something wrong; (b) just need more calories (I exercise 3-5 days a week for 30-45 minutes); or (c) just need to wait this out.

Here's what my day looks like:
Breakfast: Green smoothie with ~1C frozen greens, ~1C frozen berries, small banana, 1.5 scoops unsweetened rice and hemp protein powder, 1 C unsweetened vanilla almond milk
Lunch: Huge salad with raw veggies and 1 C of beans and a piece of fruit
Late PM snack (haven't been able to get rid of this as often don't eat dinner until 8 PM): 1 oz nuts and a piece of fruit
Dinner: 2 non-starchy vegetables (large serving), small piece of protein (2 oz max, must make this or husband will flip), piece of fruit, herbal tea or warm 1 C unsweetened vanilla almond milk

Anyone have ideas?

For what it's worth, I think it's G-BOMBS: Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries, Seeds.

Two more questions (sorry about the long post):
When/how do you usually get your serving of starchy veg or carb?
Same question about nuts and seeds?

Thanks all!

Tonight I proved I can do the "nutritarian diet" anywhere. I went with my husband to a buffet that is quite gourmet at an Indian Casino. I was a little worried about doing it and resisting all of the forbidden food on the six week plan.

It was a total success. Before I went I made a non oil Tangy, Creamy Balsamic Vinaigrette recipe that I saw featured for Spark Recipes. I highly recommend it. I did not have any tahini so I substituted two tablespoons of some spicy hummus I had from Trader Joe along with1/8 cup of raw sesame seeds. I also did one third of the vinegar rice vinegar rather than all balsamic. I put it in a small container and brought it to the restaurant so I would not get oil in the dressing.

Had a large plate of romaine with beets, garbanzo and red beans, cucumber, tomatoes, carrots, red cabbage, and some slivered raw almonds on top with my dressing. I also had a plate of steamed green beans and some marinated mushrooms. They didn't seem very oily but just pickled and not sweet. I also had three small garlic potatoes. For dessert I had a large plate with fresh strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, honeydew melon and grapes with a little more slivered almonds. For drink I had a non-caffeine orange spiced hot tea.

Overall a very successful experience I believe. I had no desire for all of the things my DH was having or for any of the beautiful desserts on the dessert bar. Also successful on the gambling front. We get free money put on our cards from time to time to play. We each had $20 tonight. We played no money of our own and walked out with $61.90 which we did not have when we came.

I have been on this for a week now and have lost 5 pounds (have 20 pounds to lose). I am really having bad cravings. I have not been eating 4 fruits...only two because I am not that hungry. I am eating HUGE salads and 1-2 cups of beans a day. This week I will balance that more. I also gave up coffee cold turkey....and started drinking herbal tea. So far I feel great! Love this plan. I don't miss meat at all. It's the cheese and bread I miss.
