CAROL - hope you're feeling better soon. I've never had shingles but I know for some people they are quite intense.

I am discouraged. I started ETL on Ash Wednesday and was finally getting the hang of it somewhat (not getting enough protein though, I think). Then I found out last week that I have Shingles! They say stress causes Shingles but I'm not quite sure what was stressing me out other than I was worried about what to cook and what to eat and I still had "other" food in m house I didn't want to throw out. So, I suspended ETL for a few weeks and hope to get back on it soon. I'm still trying to eat lots of vegetables and fruits but I have added in poultry for more protein.

This diet does take a lot of planning and preparation and I just didn't have the time to put into it a few weeks ago. I'm hoping to ease into it more and maybe go though the phases instead of just jumping into the 6-week plan.

I look forward to getting more involved in this group to get more ideas of planning and cooking for ETL.

Thanks!

2 pounds of vegetables total for the whole day. 1 pound raw, 1 pound cooked. How you divide it into meals is flexible. Eat all your raw at one meal or divide it up into 3 meals. Same with the cooked. Plus your beans and fruits.

Congrats on the 3 pounds!!

Well, I think I have some good news. I lost 3 of those 7 pounds I gained yesterday, so I am hoping that that is a ood sign for me. However, I cannot eat all the food that I think I am supposed to eat. Please someone clarify for me - 1 pound of raw food and 1 pound of cooked food for dinner and 1pound or raw food for lunch??? Or 1 pound if raw food all day??? 3 pounds total is to much food for me right now.

Hi everybody. My mom leant me her copy of Dr. Fuhrman's 'Eat for Health' (book 1) last weekend & I could hardly put it down. I ordered my own copy & it's on its way! In the meantime, I started following phase 1 goals. But I'm really looking forward to seeing book 2 (w/ menus & food plans). I've always liked fruits, veggies, beans & nuts. I just never knew they could be the mainstay of one's diet. I guess I bought into the USDA's food pyramid... gotta have your grains, meat, & dairy, or so I thought. I've tried a lot of the diets out there and every time wound up so very hungry, I had to quit. So I'm glad my mom leant me that book & I'm glad I found this group. I'm in my mid 40's & obese, but I have avoided all the common health problems associated with obesity so far, but as one ages, the body gets less tolerant of the extra weight, I think. So, I'm on the right track now! I like the EFH approach of 4 stages to conversion. And I really like the book's explanation of food addiction feelings vs true hunger. emoticon

Good evening. I gained again yesterday. That is so discouraging. I have gained 7 pounds over what is on my ticker. Eating so much food is hard for me. I have not ever eaten so much. I am stuffed after meals. So today, I ate less, not because I did not want to, but because I didn't have time to eat everything. I went shopping today and then had to get everything washed and put away. My BG was lower before supper, which is good (132). WE shall see what my next reading is before bedtime.

THank you, WILDASTARS. I will check that out.

AWELLS60, If you'll look under "Announcements" on the team page over to the right you'll see a synopsis of the 6 week plan. Might be easier than going back to the book each time.

Happy Wednesday and Happy Sparking !!

Hello.

Well, I was able to read some of the ETL book last night. So I am going to try to eat what he specifies in the 6-week plan but will have to substitute for the corn and soy. I ate fruit this morning for breakfast and had a Vega Health Op5timizer drink a little later and now I am going to finish a salad that I started last night and put some black beans with it. I will give this plan a try at least and see if I get results I want.

Thanks for the tips - Anna

I cut the grains out about a month ago and only eat berries and cherries. I eat a cup of beans a day, with nuts and seeds, chia seeds mostly, but a lot of sunflower seeds, also. My salads are mostly greens, but a tomato, some onion, plus other vegetables like jicama, cauliflower, broccoli, beets, eggplant, zucchini, cucumbers and brussels sprouts. I have 2 Vega (Health Optimizer) green smoothies with aloe, chia, maybe some fruit in the first one for breakfast and lunch I am going to try to make something with garbanzo beans to satisfy a chocolate want and some more salad. I have eaten so much on this plan that I am stuffed all the time. I do not get hungry unless I wait longer than the 4 hours to eat. But there are some things that he suggests that I cannot eat, like corn and soy. I do vnot believe they are good for anyone to eat.

I do have his book, but the print is so small that it is hard for me to read, unfortunately.

I've been terrible about getting back to check in - but here it is :)

I've been on the ETL program now for just over 6 months. After two months, I'd lost 23 pounds and lost the problems that were leading me to have to have major surgery (hysterectomy). We are plant based SOLD now, for life.

In November, I had a bad jaw infection and couldn't chew raw veggies or many other things. In December, I had my wisdom teeth out and some of my jaw bone tissue out. After I recovered from those two things, we had two vacations. On our return from vacation, we promptly caught the flu! Talk about a nutty four months!

But, I maintained my weight loss through all of it and managed to stick to the ETL program most of the time. On vacation, we did have some cocktails and the occasional meat/seafood and junky foods. But the 2 pounds I gained from it came right back off upon our return home to good, healthy foods.

Anyway, I managed to calm my life a bit and March 1st we cleaned up our diet to its original state (mostly, that meant having less carbs like popcorn and whole grain foods as we have never gone back to the meat/dairy stuff). I lost 6.5 pounds the first week back strict again and my energy once again soared.

So, this is our life now :) I'd like to find Dr. F and give him a great big hug and smoochy kiss ;)

Awell - did you read Dr. Fuhrman's book? He has great success with diabetics and his plan. There are hundreds of success stories. Fiber works like protein and fat to blunt the blood sugar effect from the carbs in fruit, beans, and so on.

His book recommends limiting whole grains and starchy carbs anyway, so most of your carbs will come from the above sources.

I am carb sensitive but have no trouble at all on the Eat to Live plan. I limit my grains/starchy carbs to 1-3 servings per day. I eat 6-8 servings of fruit, plus all the veggies I can hold, and at least 2 cups of beans per day. Plus 2 servings of nuts & seeds.

Hello, everyone. I have a question. I have been a vegetarian now for about . 11/2 months. What i am wondering is how does everyone get enough protein to balance out the carbs - especially for the diabetic I have had problems about getting enoujgh calories and proteins. I haven't been able to lose any weight for almost 1 month. I gain weight instead of losing. A friend who has been heling me suggested Vega Health Optimizer and take it twice a day, which I make into green smoothies.

Welcome Lilybelle8! We are here for you! This program is a wonderful and healthy program. The only thing I would tell you is to eat as much vegetables as you can and at least 4 fruits. 1oz of nuts and 1 cup of beans a day. Limit your starchy vegetable or grain to 1 cup or serving a day. I will warn you about the toxic hunger you will feel. Your stomach will grow and sound mad for a while and that is what we usually confuse with hunger. It is not true hunger it is toxic hunger where your body is trying to detox all the wrong things that you have been eating. True hunger is felt in the throat. Drink plenty of water and eat plenty of the right things. It is a very easy program. I am so glad you are here. Check back here and any questions you have please ask. emoticon emoticon

Friday and Saturday are the hardest day for me too! This weekend we had family over and since I was in charge of food I made sure there plenty of fruit out at all times and lots of veggies to load up with at lunch. This morning when I woke up all I wanted was a fresh piece of fruit to start of my day.

I hope March is treating everyone well! Have a great week!

A very 'timid' hello - I'm a newbie to this team and to this way of eating - just started today. Would anyone care to warn me of the difficulties that I may run into - and offer tips on what helped you stick with the program?

Yeah its Friday! I went to the store yesterday & picked up some different frozen fruits to add into my smoothies. Mine this morning was great - and even better, my little girl loved hers too! Nothing more motivating to me then seeing my children enjoying eating better!!!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Hello All, still here struggling but moving forward. I am eating lots of veggies, I'm not eating any mammalian meat, but I am snacking on too much junk at work, all my meals are vegetable based but I'm blowing it elsewhere. Trying to get it under control. Had an exciting find at Costco....large bags of organic baby kale, I bought 5 bags!!! YEAH!!

Hello all-
Still doing my best to eat as healthfully as possible. Every few weeks I find myself slipping into eating more breads than I should on a daily basis. Raw veggies go away when this happens. So, time to get back on track. This afternoon I am trying a massaged kale salad for lunch. I hope it is tasty, because the recipe made a lot!

Well I had forgotten how great the food can be!
I had a great day today with porridge, flaxseed, apples and cinnamon-sauteed the apple and then had a small green smoothie with homemade sunflower seed milk
I had a bean and kale soup, green salad and ezekile toritilla-the proridge a 1/2 serving so I think that sis fine-I stuffed the tortilla with refried beans ,lettuce,1/3 avocado and salsa 'and for supper I am having cream zucchini soup and a chicpea burger wrapped in lettuce. I managed to track my food and it all looks good-I know I won't always have the time because tracking this food can be complex
I'm really proud I am no longer drinking coffee!

Hello All! Tomorrow will be the first day back to the Eat to Live program for me. I'm looking forward to it. I lost 20 pounds with it last year, then went off the plan and started eating flour/sugar/fats again. I gained back the 20 pounds I had lost! So, time to stop treating this plan like a diet, and just get healthy. I'll be reporting in daily.

The food tracker is a great tool to help you fill those gaps in your nutrition!

Happy weekend all! I had a pretty good week with ETL. I've found I really miss having beans & my 2oz of avocado on the days I don't eat it. My morning smoothies are taking on some variety now, and along with my smoothie yesterday I chowed down on some cut up cantalope! I wasn't hungry until well after 12:00 yesterday! I had a yummy salad for lunch and for dinner there was leftover veggie chili that I topped with avocado. Mmmm! I've had some slip-ups too this week, but in comparison from what I used to eat I'm well on my way to staying healthy!

Speaking of breakfast smoothies....time for me to get to it. Pineapple based smoothie today! Yum!!

I have been having some snags to my plan, but I think I have discovered what the problem is, I hope. I was not losing anything and my BG was a bit high and I don't think it should have been. But using the nutrition tracker showed me some interesting facts. For one thing I didn't realize how much fat was in most foods!!!

I have the ETL book, but the print is so small and even with a magnifying glass it is hard for me to read. I tracked my food yesterday and found my fat intake is so much higher than the carbs or protein is. I printed out the results and have done some comparisons and found that lentils and beans give me the most protein and the least fat, so I am going to eat more beans. I have also been gaining weight and losing it but not where I should be by now. We will see what today ends with.

This is my first time adding to the discussion here so I hope I'm "replying" correctly. I started the eat to live plan on January 1st and I have lost a little over 20 pounds with an average weight loss of 2-3 pounds a week. I started jogging several weeks ago and I feel great. I have another 20-30 pounds to lose, although I'll wait and see what my body says about that. I have found it easier to abstain from certain things altogether rather than having the occasional treat because I've been afraid that treat would be the gateway to my food addictions again. Also, I'm finding certain foods taste amazing now that my taste buds have changed. I have inspired some people around me who have watched me through this process and have been asking questions about what I'm doing to get healthier. I would be more than happy to help anyone else on their journey!

Hello! I stayed strict on the 6-week plan for three weeks and lost about 5 pounds which was great...then I fell off the wagon hard with a doughnut and cheeseburger binge (terrible, I know!) Since then, I've been struggling to stay 100% on the plan. The hardest part is limiting my whole grains. So yesterday I spent all day cooking three different bean soups (lentil, black bean, and great northern bean with collard greens). I also bought two big tubs of spinach and field greens, a bunch of kale, different colored bell pepers, and onions. Today I started fresh again with the 6-week plan. A smaller goal is to make it through the entire month of March on the plan, so I'm ready for Spring and Summer clothes! Anyone starting fresh today? Send me a note or stop by my page! We can buddy up.

Hi Pam!! Work snacks are the worst!! It takes all I have to stay out of the chocolate drawer when I'm subbing at my son's school. Not to mention the break room usually has a full spread of treats and goodies. Rarely is it a tray of veggies of a bowl of fruit. Will power!!

Well, after a week long slack in my food choices I'm doing much better. I've noticed that when all I'm wanting is bread it's because I haven't had any beans for a day or two! YIKES!! I've got to stay on top of this! I have noticed a huge improvment in my overall digestion....no more tummy aches!! I also drink a squeeze of lemon in warm water every morning, which is a HUGE help for my tummy too! My son does the lemon every morning too and it has helped with his stuffy sinuses! AMAZING!!

As always I'm a work in progress...always moving forward!

Have a great day!

Hello Everyone, I thought I had posted here before but didn't see one. So I have been doing the Eat to Live program since June 2011, and have lost about 24 pounds.

It would be way more if I didn't give in to the snacks while at work, 15 hours shifts make it very hard to stay focused on me when all I want to do is grab a quick bite because there's no time for a sit down lunch on most days(medical office, walk in clinic)

I do take salads and veggies, soups or steamed veggies. I have a smoothie every work morning made with fresh spinach, frozen blueberries, banana and almond milk.

My husband has lost 70 pounds and is no longer diabetic and is off all his medications for cholesterol, diabetes and is heart medicine.

I will finish reading all the posts here to get caught up.

PS. HI AMANDA, glad to see you here

In Dr. Neal Barnard's Program to Reverse Diabetes, he advises those with diabetes not to focus so much on the individual reaction to one food (such as sweet potato or oatmeal), but to follow the guidelines and let the weight drop, the nutrition increase, and the average blood sugar stabilize. I did that, and am finally down to A1c 5.6, normal range, having started at 6.9, on the cusp of being assigned a statin.

Nutrition is the prescription.

You can literally stretch your lifespan by shrinking your waistline.

Nutrition and other lifestyle factors that you can choose are a more significant determinant of your health than genetics.

Filling your stomach with high-nutrient foods is like by-pass surgery without the surgery.

When we bake, it's whole grain bread, but I shifted from baking to cooking stews and soups and dals. The creative energy is the same, but the health consequences are very different!

Good Morning! I started ETL last Wednesday. I'm using this as my Lenten Journey but also I need to lose about 40-50#. I am a foodie and I LOVE to bake but I'm hoping I can make this a lifetime way of eating. I will probably eat some meat after the 6 weeks but I'm hoping to keep it at a minimum as Dr. Fuhrman suggests.

So far I have lost about 5# so I'm happy. I need to quit getting on the scale every day though....it gets discouraging when you lose for 3 days then gain for 2 then lose again!! I am exercising and training for a 1/2 marathon in May so I'm trying to find the balance of how much to eat right now. I don't think I'm eating a whole pound of raw AND cooked vegetables each day, PLUS 4 Fruits a day....that's a LOT of food to eat in only 3 meals!! So I'm slowly trying to get my stomach adjusted to not feeling so stuffed after the salad so I can eat more cooked vegetables also.

Hello, I don't post much anymore but I'm still here. I find I spend to much time visiting so I stay off except to track. Been eating the ETL way for 7 months and still love it. Lost 24 lbs as well. Busy w/ my new elliptical machine which I love. Reading lots of good books w/ my "Kindle" on healthy foods. Good Luck everyone...it's a great way to LIVE!!!!!

Hi, you guys! I'm new to ETL, but not new to vegan eating. I'm excited to start this new lifestyle.

I'm going to start hard-core next week, but I'm gradually making the transition right now.

Tomorrow I'm going to start the "DO" rules, but not worry so much about the "DON'T" rules yet.

Starting weight: 220 (May 2009)

Hello, I thought I had checked in for this message board, but I could not find any entries from me, so I am starting here. I have been on the vegetarian lifestyle for about 3 1/2 months now, from the weekend before Thanksgiving. My family thought I was crazy when I didn't eat any turkey, but it didn't phase me. While they were gaining weight, I lost 5 lbs.

I am also trying to reverse my diabetes, so there are some fruits and vegetables that I cannot eat like high glycemic fruit and sweet potatoes and grains. They all make my glucose shoot up. Maybe when I have succeeded in reversing my diabetes I can add them back, because I really like oatmeal and sweet potatoes. But at least my favorite fruit is strawberries and as far as I can tell, I can still eat berries.

I finally was able to buy the ETL book, but haven't had a chance to read much of it. I am a gold member of the website and have learned quite a bit from it, so far.

Went on vacation for a week to south beach with my girlfriends!! wonderful time but had to totally blow my eat to live plan as I didn't want to be that person who can't eat anything that is being served.... so I just decided to let it go for a week and get back on track when I came home. Gained 4 pounds... and my knee pain came back but here I am getting back on the eat to leave band wagon - it works and I felt wonderful! I am hoping to start feeling better quickly....

What do I base my meals around without meat?
Breakfast: 3 pieces of fruit and a Tbl of ground flax seed, usually blended into a smoothie.
Lunch: a large bowl full of lettuce with cut up other veggies added. About half a cup of beans and half an ounce of nuts or salad dressing made with nuts.
Dinner: Small(er) salad (cereal bowl full) with something cooked. Stirfry with veggies and beans on brown rice, veggie soup with bulgur in it, black bean tacos with brocolli on the side, etc.

That's my "usual".

Last night I had roasted eggplant with a tabouli salad and some tangerines.
