Last week was a very good week. I am feeling back on track and ready to lose some more weight! I gained 5.5 pounds over the Thanksgiving weekend and lost 6 this week so I am a little ahead of the game.

JEN7541: I am in the process of becoming vegan. I am not there 100% yet but I am getting there. Most days are all vegan. I am currently reading "The Ultimate Vegan Guide" by Erik Marcus. I found it on Amazon. It is a really good introduction. One thing he recommended that makes sense to me is to "crowd out don't cut out." Meaning, instead of cutting out foods you love and feeling deprived, add a bunch of new stuff. You'll find that the new stuff eventually replaces the old stuff. Like LIVELIFE2DAY, I started by making 1-2 new recipes a week and have added to them. Some days I keep it really simple and other days I set aside time for a more complex recipe. I have tried tons of new fruits and veggies and enjoyed most of them. It can be a very fun process. It does take time. I have spent months reading tons of things from websites to books looking up recipes and just generally educating myself. Some people do best just jumping in with both feet and other people do better transitioning slowly. Find what works for you and go with it. I think it's best not to think about all the things you can never have again. In reality, if you want a serving of chips or a slice of pizza, it's not going to kill you. You just can't do it everyday. After eating on plan fro a while you might find you don't want that stuff or you might find suitable alternatives. For example, kale chips are a really good potato chip substitute. Blending frozen fruit is a really good ice cream substitute. It has the look of soft serve with a sweet taste. I used to love ice cream and now I have this treat instead and I am completely satisfied. This eating plan really is not about deprivation. There are some really tasty and healthy desserts that are completely on plan.

@JEN7541.....There are so many excellent vegan cookbooks out there and lots of websites to get very good recipes from that there is no reason to miss your old standard diet. When I first started out, I challenged myself to try one new recipe each week. Some I liked, some I didn't. But now I have a whole slew of wonderful soups, stews, wraps, salad dressings and even desserts to choose from. These new choices keep me grounded and able to suppress any cravings (since my body is getting the nutrients it needs). I read Dr. Neal Barnard's book about Breaking the Food Seduction (see link below) and that helped me immensely. You have to do what works for you, but if you stick with it, you will not want that old diet any longer and when you do allow yourself some bad snacks/food, etc., you will "feel it"....if you know what I mean.
Good luck in your journey. Let me know if you want my awesome chili recipe! : )

Hi everybody, I have a question for you.

I'm having a really hard time getting with the program. Although I do enjoy beans and salad and fruits, having to eat nothing but clean foods all day long frankly bums me out and I keep falling off the plan because I guess I can't wrap my head around the idea of eating like this forever ... no chips, ice cream, pizza ever again?

Could you all please give me some motivation? Is this to be expected early on? Did the rest of you go through anything like this? I was watching Dr. F on PBS this afternoon and felt so depressed that I can't seem to channel his excitement for this lifestyle. But I really want to!

Hello, I'm new to this group. I have just read the Eat To Live book, watched Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead last week and I started my 6 week plan on Friday. After being on Spark since August, I have lost some weight. But, I had not lost so much as a pound in all of October or November and that was with exercising 20 min a day. It was my fat intake was too high. I had been eating a lot of nuts & peanut butter in place of meats. Now after reading the book I can see why I had not lost any weight or fat from my stomach. Now after only two days on the 6 week plan I have already lost 4 lbs. I am very happy to have found this group, and look forward to learning from all of you Eat To Live folks!
Thank you

IF I start feeling too bloated during the day, I have something with a little less fiber for dinner. Some days I've had so many beans and raw veggies and fruit that I just have oatmeal or cream of wheat for supper and that is enough. If try to force more vegetables, I don't feel comfortable.

Hi everyone...

I'm just about to finish my first week on the program. Doing fairly well so far, although I have added a bit of salt here and there, and olive oil on my kale chips (i'm addicted, decided that I should hold off on those for a while.)

Just wondering if it is normal or common to feel a little bloated when you first start this plan?
It might just be hormonal, either way, I'm glad to be eating healthy foods again!

Hubby brought in a panful of turnip greens out of his orchard patch. Can hardly wait to eat some with blackeyed peas and his healthy stoneground cornbread. Orange for dessert.

I'm reading a fiction book that has a character with Hodgekins who is learning to eat the whole food diet as treatment. Interesting coincidence! The Missing, by Beverly Lewis.

I just discovered celery root as a substitute for potato hash browns and I really enjoyed it!

celery-root-hashbrowns.html)

does anyone else have fun traditional recipes made with unique foods?

(by the way, my black bean brownies usually come out very moist as well, unlike dry fluffy flour brownies, but I love them that way!)

Good morning to you all. I was watching Dr. Fuhrman on a PBS special last night. Very informative. I started reading his book again, Eat To Live, and I'm on a roll. I do know this (from my past attempts at Vegan), if you eat this way, you feel great. If you slip up, you feel awful and you know why. Therefore, moving forward, it is really hard to continue to eat poorly when you know how good you are going to feel eating nutritious foods. OK...enough on that. Just wanted to whoop it up. I am happy today!

I made Dr. Fuhrman's black bean brownies yesterday. They taste pretty good, but they are the consistency of traditional raw brownie mix so not sure what I did wrong. My husband ordered a dehydrator for me (he's being incredibly supportive.) I wanted to set it up yesterday since I took the whole week off, but instead I played around in the kitchen with soup recipes, dressing recipes and desserts. I'm going to clear out a space for it today and try to form the mix into cookies and dehydrate, see if I can salvage this recipe. I'm still looking for something to take to the Christmas party this Saturday. I have a fairly healthy back up plan, but it is not Vegan and it uses bread (crostini) - not horrible, but I really wanted something whole food, plant based, Vegan.

Booklady, you can also try making a microsalad type salad (chopped salad?) and put it into a pita pocket for something different. Add some hummus or beans. I hope the A1C goes well. 3 weeks is short for that test, but c'est la vie!

BOOKLADY3: I hope the test goes well! You will have to let us know how it goes. I get tired of salads from time to time. You can try a green smoothie and see if you like drinking your greens better. I used to make them a lot but have gotten away from them. You can also change up what you put on the salad. Maybe add some cooked veggies for variety or a different dressing or spice. Any kind of variety helps. Try a different lettuce or baby spinach in place of lettuce.

I'm a little tired of salads right now. What do you do when the thought of salad is no longer appealing? I think I'm needing a big pot of turnip greens instead! Thursday is my 6 month A1c3 blood test. Will three weeks of this plan make any difference on it? I hope so, although the test itself references the effects of my eating over a 3 month span. I'm a little nervous about it.

Welcome to the group, Terri! This is a terrific group of folks for inspiration and support :)

Like Lisa and Dakota, I am recovering from a less than successful holiday weekend. I got on the scale this morning and was up 2 pounds. BUT -- I am, ummmm, backed up and retaining water like mad. So when all that clears up, I think I will only be up maybe half a pound. I've been trying to get back into the ETL swing, but have been doing little cheats. I need to spend some time this evening going over my goals and objectives and my plans. I need to re-assert in my mind why I'm doing this and re-make it a priority. Just one of those things I will always have to do periodically. (Was feeling great today until I ate some cookies. Haven't been able to shake them out of my system/mind. Ugh. But this is good, because I haven't gone back for more. Last week I would have.)

Hello everyone. I am new to the group. I started today eating a healthy vegan diet and trying to give up the oil, etc. Need to make this a life habit and not just a few months habit. I need all the support I can get. Thanks and have a great day! Terri

After 4 horrible eating days of meat, dairy, refined sugar, and white flour I am back and more committed than ever to Eat to Live. Eating that way just makes me feel yucky. I can't wait until it is all out of my system.

Hi all. I'm back from a week visiting family in Michigan. Since I'm not vegan I did enjoy a little turkey with vegetables, coleslaw, yams and fruit for my Thanksgiving dinner. As a special treat I had a half piece of cheesecake. My brother and his family have an exchange student from Vietnam, it is very interesting learning her perspective on our american customs.

Hey Diane -- Personally, I see no need for you to go back to "day 1" just because you had a less-than-perfect day. That's what's great about ETL -- it's long-term, for life, so if you slip up a bit, you just get right back on the horse and don't beat yourself up about it.

Had a whole plant food Thanksgiving with no turkey. I had a stuffed acorn squash a white tuscan bean soup salad with fuhrman's dressing. Did slip up a bit with a piece of pie and wine but when I weighed the next day had lost 0.5 pounds. I did exercise every day so that probably helped. Everyone is doing so well here. I am inspired by your posts!

Good morning. I hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving. I was on vacation last week. I didn't go anywhere except to play with my grand-daughter and the next day go there for dinner. I'm lucky to have such a sweet daughter-in-law. I wish I had more time to spend with her. She is really busy now that Christmas Shopping has begun. She manages a retail store and they are in full swing.

We all wanted my brother's to go to the dinner but they stayed home, mourning my mom. I think it would have done them good to get outside of the house but hopefully by Christmas they will.

I'm still on this darn plateau. I probably could get off it if my days ever became routine again. Maybe when I start back to work. I just can't get into exercising the way I used to and it shows. My shoulder is so sore that I can't lift my left arm higher than my shoulder. it's the pits. An old injury come back to bug me in the guise of bursitis. The cold weather doesn't help at all.

All in all I'm happy. I hope you are all happy too.

Good morning all!

Dakota: The more you stick to your program the better you will feel and he will see the results. That will be enough to convince him to improve his eating for his own health. We are lucky that we gained weight in a sense. Others get other problems even if they don't gain weight. It's all the same--bad eating, no exercise, lots of stress.

I lost another .2 lbs yesterday and my eyesight has improved once again-this time for my close-up computer reading. Yahoo!!

I had a coughing jag last night. All those greens are working on my throat area which has been an issue for about 9 months. Time for internal house cleaning for sure.

Enjoy your day everyone. I'm getting winter tires on my car before the first heavy snow.

Go with your gut instincts. If you are getting a wide variety of fresh fruit, vegies, and loads of greens, I wouldn't be too concerned. I have never followed Spark's guidelines. I read what they have to say, do research, try things out and listen to my instincts.

Hi everyone! Does anyone else have trouble meeting SparkPeople's nutrition recommendation ranges? I have upped my activities of late, but don't feel they are taxing me outrageously and SparkPeople's system keeps saying I'm not eating enough! I'm not sure how much more I can eat in a day, yikes! Anyone have any advice?

Happy "Green" Friday everyone. I hate the term "Black Friday" don't you? LOL I hope everyone stayed strong yesterday and enjoyed the company of loved ones.

My eyesight has dramatically improved thanks to my clean eating. I was thrilled yesterday when I could see everything along the greenbelt while walking with my friends. A big plus! I also dropped 1/2 lb yesterday.

Here's to another great day.

Hi! I have my book now and DH and I are taking turns reading. We want to be sure we understand what we are doing. I'll be traveling on Friday and away for a week. When I get back I am going to do this in earnest. So glad DH is onboard!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Down another half pound this week. I'll take it.

We are off for four days at a hotel. Buffet meal tomorrow. The menu didn't look like there was much vegan on it. Hopefully there is some simple fare...

Take care everyone, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

ARCHIMEDES You rock hon! Congrats. Keep up the good work.

I was feeling a bit punie yesterday, drank tons of water (120ozs) and stayed on program with food. No exercise except work-house cleaner-and that was 6 1/2 hours so it counts!

I lost another 1 1/2 lbs yesterday so I'm going in the right direction.

Have a happy Thanksgiving everyone. Stay strong!

Brighteyed, that's a tough combination of stuff, especially at this time of year! I'm glad that you have some people around you for the holiday that are ETL friendly. I hope they motivate the heck out of you!!! You KNOW that eating well will help you deal with the stress -- even if the bad stuff seems like it will make you feel better. (BTW, my wedding is 5 months away as of today -- OMG, I really need to get back to the planning!)

It was so inspiring to hear about Archimedes' triumph, I got sparked into posting again. Way to go!

I myself was not great about being on the Eat to Live plan these last few weeks. Part of it has to do with increased life stressors and falling back on my habit of coping with anxiety by eating. I've been finishing up my master's thesis, looking toward graduation this December, plus my fiance got a new job and is moving to another city. I'm with him over the Thanksgiving break but then I have to go back alone and finish up the semester without him and without the cats! And then I have to worry about moving myself, and getting a new job, and finding a place to live, and planning the wedding...

So needless to say, I've been stressed. But last time I visited my fiance's family, his dad got into Fuhrman and then passed on the news to his younger son (my fiance's brother), so now his wife is doing Eat To Live as well. So now that I'm here over Thanksgiving, the people who got inspired by my success with Eat To Live are inspiring me all over again. Isn't it amazing what sharing your experience with others can do?

Keep in mind I had to "special-order" the salads, but I got a good waiter-cook pairing this time. Who knows how it will go on another day...

Hi, all --

I am officially just 'overweight' this morning. I have been feeling pudgy the last several days, so haven't weighed myself since Thursday 'official end of the 6-wk challenge'. But since today is the start of the Holiday challenge, I figured I ought to get on the scale. And SURPRISE!!! I was down 1.5 pounds from Thursday!!! This makes my BMI 29.9. WOOOHOOOO!

I get to order my binoculars now (my reward for being Overweight) .

And welcome back Artistgrl. Great job on having a few splurges (need to do that sometimes), but being pretty good at Disney. And Jana, I didn't know Applebees had that lunch deal. That sounds great. I had them x'd off of the possibilities list. Thanks!

Hi everyone! I'm back from my vacation. I tried to make good choices, and succeeded most of the time, with a few splurges (it was Disneyland, after all). It was a long drive, so I'm going to wait a few days before recording my weight, because I always get swollen and inflamed after long trips. Hope everyone is well! Missed you all!

Good morning. I continue to do the best I can in situations where I am not in 100% control. Yesterday, we intended to go to our favorite Chinese restaurant, where I know I can get a big platter of steamed veggies. They weren't open yet, so we ended up at Applebees across the street. Turns out it isn't too bad at lunch time. They have a reasonably priced all-you-can eat soup and salad. I got one bowl of tomato-basil (who knows what was in it) and tons of salad. The first one came with croutons and cheese so I picked off what I could. After that I ordered more with no croutons or cheese. I also tried the spinach salad. It came with some bacon (oops, yum) and sliced almonds and roasted red peppers. The next salad I ordered the garden (no cheese or croutons) and add the nuts and red peppers. They were very happy to make it my way. It took a while to eat (when doesn't it?) but I got what I needed!
