Hi Loren, Sequel's Whole Food Smoothie Infusion has 14g protein per serving. Here's a link, and just click on the tab for nutritional info shop.sequelnaturals.com/Vega-Us/Vega

Hope this helps, and I'm glad to know I have company on this team trying to get 60g protein per day. We seem to be in the minority!

I too am concerned about my protein intake. I really like to lift weight and do a lot of reading about such. They all say I need more protein. I'm lucky if I get into the 50 grams a day, even with all my bean consumption.

Sunny I checked out the Sequel's Vega Smoothie Infusion on the Vega site (and amazon) and no where do they say how much protein is in a serving, just that it is more than 2 eggs. I thought that was a little odd. Other than that it looks yummy!

Even a vegan diet that is high in fat can create elevated cholesterol. Fat is the culprit, animal fat is just a bigger culprit than vegetable fat. So say Dr. McDougall and Dr. Esselstyn ( and probably others too).

I stay on my road and I don't change lanes.

I had been on a low-carb, very high fat diet (Atkins) and then a very eggy-cheesy, lacto-ovo vegetarian plan, meaning that my animal fat and cholesterol intake had been very high for many years, so my doc was happy that in 6 months it had gone down 23 points or so. My mom had high cholesterol too despite a fairly healthy lifestyle, so it might be partially heredity. But I will gladly report in when I have more info!

No, no bloodwork yet but I am having a complete physical in September and we'll see just what 2/1/2 years of living a totally plant-based life has done. My cholesterol was still over 240 when I had been tested after 6 months, so I am really curious! Thanks for your concern, and we'll see what transpires!

SUNNY, I know that you are increasing your protein intake following Ginny Messina's recommendation. I was wondering whether you actually had data from a blood profile that you are low in protein. I haven't been low in protein yet in my blood tests. That's why I ask.

I think this what I love about this team. We read and learn and adapt, and we remember that we are all individuals. There are very clearly no two people who actually practice our lifestyle in a cookie cutter fashion.

Just to clarify, I never use whey protein if I need to boost my protein. I no longer choose dairy products and only use plant-based protein products. One of the very best powdered meal replacements/supplements is Sequel's Vega Smoothie Infusion which is mostly pea protein with lots of seeds, veggies and fruits. It was deisgned by Brendan Brazier, a Canadian vegan body-builder. I am still trying to get enough protein daily. Supplementing, to me, is better than chronically going too low. But that's my take after doing as much reading as I have. Scholars on both sides of the equation disagree and each can support their views. In the end, it's an individual decision.

I've never used them but here a part of the doc's old newsletter article on it:

Dr. Fuhrman:
"Plant proteins~ A typical assortment of vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, and whole grains
supplies about 50 grams of protein per 1000 calories. Keep in mind, green vegetables are almost fifty percent protein, and when you eat more vegetables it does not promote
cancer or heart disease, like it does when you increase consumption of animal products. Plus, the additional calories from plant food will give you much more than just
protein; they will supply you with the antioxidants that can protect against the increased free radicals generated by the exercise."
on protein supplements:
"The use of protein supplements is not merely a waste of money, it is unhealthy. Studies on supplemental amino acid consumption have not supported claims that such supplementation
increases growth hormone or provides other touted benefits. In fact, increased whey protein
added to the diet of rats increased tumors and cancers."

Hi all, I haven't been using protein powders lately, except yesterday. My nutritional consultant urged me not to mix them with fruit if I do use them, so I added 1 heaping TBS of Naturade Soy protein powder (55 cals and 13g protein) to a glass of light chocolate soymilk. It mixed in pretty well and brought me up to 58g for the day which was close enough for me!

I felt I needed to do this because DH and I went out for dinner, and I chose a big green salad that came with chicken, black beans, avocado, cheese, and tortilla strips. I told them to leave off the cheese and chicken and give me extra beans. I had balsamic vinaigrette instead of the ranch dressing, on the side. I hoped for a cup of beans but got a scant 1/2 cup. In keeping with National Junk Food Day yesterday, I had a small serving of their fried potato slices which are out of this world, with my own organic HFCS-free ketchup. When I added everything in at home, I was way under for calories and protein, hence the fortified chocolate soymilk. Then I had a serving of Purely Decadent Turtle Trails. My weight always fluctuates, but I today was down 1-1/2s pound this a.m. from yesterday!

I'm all about doing the best I can with what life dishes out. We started out in the line for the buffet at the casino. The AC was not working well and the heavy smell of cigarette smoke really got to me, so we left and went to this other spot. It turned out to be okay for us both, and knowing I could boost my protein at home kept me from getting anxious about the dinner stats.

Without knowing the ingredients of the protein shakes you are talking about it would be hard to say. Many are high in fat and sugar as well as protein. There is really nothing in ETL that allows for protein shakes, though I know some of us add a protein powder to our smoothies now and then.

If your protein is too low add more peas and beans to your diet. Add lentils to your soups or stews. Add garbanzo beans to your salads. If you are drinking smoothies you can even add beans to those.

Protein shakes and protein powders in any form are a processed food. I have found, and I think that most will agree with me, the less processed foods you eat, the better. I use protein shakes when I am on vacation and off schedule, out of my typical element. But I'm very picky about which ones I buy - no fat, very low or no sugar. The gain in protein is not worth it if it's full of fat, sugar and sodium.

Just my opinion, I'm sure others will chime in with some ideas for you!

Hello All,

I have a question. How good is to take these protein supplements? I have seen many people drinking these shakes in my gym. Are they really needed? Any results?

My protein intake according to SP should be 60. but mine stays in the range of 40 - 50.

Please let me know. I am here to loose weight.
