Because of how a just a few people treated me and the horrible loss of my only child, I believed I wasn't worthy to be happy or healthy. Now I believe I am worthy and because of the support and knowledge of Spark I am beginning to live my life with a healthy mind and healthier body. emoticon

I used to believe that a lowfat diet is the only way to lose weight. After reading Fuhrman's latest, and watching his video on fats, I no longer believe this. I'm enjoying the nut-based dressings on my salad. (I avoid processed oils and other sources of fat.)

Being a nutritionally"cured" type 2 diabetic, I used to believe I still needed to worry about my blood sugar levels.
A conversation with Dr. Fuhrman on his site put that anxiety to rest. If my food is chosen wisely, blood sugar is not an issue. Simple.

I used to believe I craved protein (with the ensuing idea that I needed to eat a lot of meat and cheese).

Obviously I craved fat and sodium, and for those who are newer on the team and haven't read my earlier posts, that meant at least a half pound of animal flesh, a couple of eggs, and up to a half pound of cheese a day. It never occurred to me that if the craving wasn't going away with so much feeding that I must be barking up the wrong tree.

I used to believe that, if I were sick, I needed and deserved fat- and sugar-laden comfort food.

How nice to learn that I recover more quickly when I eat vegetables, that I feel better while I'm bedridden when I sip mugs of bean broth and that I feel more satisfied when I eat lightly steamed kale.

I used to believe that it was rude to eat differently than everyone else and have to be "accommodated." They can eat what they eat and I'll eat what I eat!

I used to believe I was "educated" about good nutrition, and that meat was necessary to get enough protein and dairy was necessary to get enough calcium.

I used to believe I couldn't make it through the day without a coffee. I used to think I enjoyed coffee! Really I used to suffer through the worst, most bitter, grossest coffee just to get my fix!

I used to believe I'd have to cut back on physical activity if I was going to have a diet like Eat To Live because I couldn't possibly get enough energy for Tae Kwon Do class (by the way, my instructor's instructor is VEGAN, duh!).

I used to believe...

- that *I* would never be able to eat healthfully, that I simply "liked" foods that were bad for me too much to ever avoid eating too much of them (but what I thought was simple taste preference really was addiction)

- I couldn't sustain a healthful eating plan unless everyone around me switched to it as well (but really, now that I'm actually satiated by my food for the first time in my life, it doesn't matter what others around me are eating, I won't be tempted)

- and I'll post more as they come to me! Because there are so many more...

I never thought of the duplicate items. That is an interesting connection! I hate going up and down stairs for stuff.

I never thought I could go meatless. Sure I'm not 100% meatless all the time, but I know i could do that if I really put my mind to it.

CHAZMO227, I relate strongly to your post. What a wonderfully written description of how the truth can set one free.

55WALKER: I am also efficiency-driven. I think I'll spend a bit of time today ridding a couple of rooms of duplicate items so I can increase my need to get up and go somewhere in order to do something. Great thought.

Eating mostly all fruits and veggies would make me feel weak and look anemic.

I would never find a way of eating that was nutritious and made such good common sense.

I have to focus on calories all the time in order to keep my weight in check.

I need to get used to feeling hungry and weak all the time in order to keep from gaining weight.

Yippee! I love that all these things are NOT true!

I used to believe that it was a good thing to have duplicates of every commonly used item (scissors, pencils, paper, phones, trash cans, electronics, snacks/drinks, etc) in as many rooms of the home as possible because it was "efficient".

Unfortunately, it was also a recipe for poor health as it also kept me from needing to be active at home. I would marvel at how my older sister bounded all over her apartment, up and down stairs several times an hour fetching this or that and then putting it back and I would wonder why she didn't make it easier on herself. In retrospect though I realize that she has never ever been overweight or had trouble sleeping or thought that "easy" meant "better".

I used to believe--and say frequently--"Oh, I couldn't stand that. I'd never make it."

But I survived the sudden death three years ago of my beloved brother. Eight days from diagnosis until he died. We were twins in every way except biologically, and I miss him as much today as I did then.

I survived childhood abuse. I survived divorce. I survived life-threatening surgery.

I'm going to work on giving up the concept that I can't make it.

I am spending a few moments catching up on yesterday's emails/posts, and I want to stop by to say: I cannot imagine the freedom inherent within "I'm not really hungry."

I am agog at what I have read thus far in ETL. Hopeful, astonished, excited, you name it.

But exhausted as well. No more weigh and measure? No more calorie counting? No more guilt? No more (real) hunger? No more excuses? No more despair over my failures? No more wandering the kitchen looking for that "something" I want to eat? No more eating junk that doesn't satisfy that hunger? No more fatigue? No more sleepless nights?

Turning the human brain upside down this way takes a lot of energy, and I cannot grasp all this in one sitting. So I'm reading the book a second time, studying HARD.

And looking forward to the day when I can join you, 55Walker, in saying, with honesty and quiet elation, "I used to believe I was hungry."

I'm just joining this group, and I will post an intro in the right spot, but I can't resist adding my thoughts to this thread:

I used to believe I had to read all there is to read and study all there is to study before I could make a change. For example, if I had read this thread a year ago, I would have immediately gone out to buy the ETL book, researched your jargon and how-to materials in great depth and, basically, just immersed myself in knowing "everything" before I did anything.

Now, however, I learn as I go. Not a clue what some of you are talking about, and that's okay. I'll get there.

Okay, off to the intro page...

I used to believe:

I needed to eat dairy because yogurt, etc. are such "healthy" foods. Now that I am cutting dairy and having zero allergies and sinus problems I am seeing the light!!

Green smoothies/juice can't taste good (so WRONG, I love them both!).

If I eliminate animal protein from my meals, I won't feel "satisfied." And salads can't fill me up...WRONG!

And like someone else said, organic/vegetarian/vegan/ and other "healthy" junk foods aren't really junk...wrong!!

Good point Anne. Was is Jeff Novick that did something about why "moderation in all things" can make us sick?

I think the phrase "no food is completely bad" may have come from back in the day when our ancestors were eating REAL food. Thanks to food manufacturers there are now plenty of foods that are completely BAD. And of course we now know that dairy is evil.

After 3 weeks of no dairy, I had a glass of milk Saturday night and I woke up Sunday morning with post nasal drip just like I had a cold. A vegetarian I know online swore that when she cut out cow's milk and other dairy that she had much less mucus and I used to think she was full of it. I now believe that she's correct.

Only guinea pigs eat kale. (We had a guinea pig named Snickers who ADORED kale! I thought it strange but now I adore kale too! :-))

I used to believe I would ALWAYS be able to eat a bazillion calories a day and still weigh 110 pounds. Worked for a very long time, then menopause showed up to prove me wrong.

I used to think I could eat crap, take lots of vitamins, and be healthy.

I used to believe that vegetarians were weird, vegans were even weirder and I could NEVER eat like that.

I used to think if someone took the trouble to cook something and bring it to me I had to eat it. Ditto show up with donuts or chips or fried chicken or, or, or . . . . . . .

I used to think that vegan junk food was some how better for me than regular junk food. Junk food is junk food, a nutritarian knows that.

Court, that's exactly what I was thinking! The dairy devil has been the hardest to break from. I used to believe that vegans were sickly, too- not enough protein! Now I know how very different someone eating vegan and someone eating nutritarian can be.

Most important, I used to think that the junk I ate was FOOD! Fifty years ago, the processed, artificially colored, flavored, crap we eat now wouldn't be recognized as food, what changed?

As I shaved behind my knees this morning and then dried off after my bath with a hand towel I had to laugh, remembering things I used to believe. For example:

~ "Caring about things like shaving my legs is something I don't have time for."
~ "I like using beach towels after my bath."
~ "I won't ever again be able to stand up straight, cast my eyes down, and see my toes (I would be too thin if I could)."
~ "Life without cheese would be dull."
