At least you understand the paradox you have before you!

I would say lifting weights - slowly, and only do one or two sets of 15 reps, will help tone your muscles without burning a lot of calories. And since muscle weighs a lot more than fat, it will give you a healthy weight gain.

For the cardio part - I'd say do whatever gets your heart pumping/respiration up while using the fewest muscles - walking/biking (lower body) or kayaking (upper body) could do the job for a while - but as you gain cardio fitness, it will take more effort/calories to get your heart rate where it should be.

You can play with the "cardio" section in the Fitness category - enter 30 minutes of walking; 30 minutes of swimming; 30 minutes of running, etc - and then compare the calories burned by each??

I'm looking for suggestions for cardio exercises that don't burn too many calories. I'm trying get in shape while also gaining weight (try explaining that to non-underweight friends...I'm sure you all know how fun that can be!). Anyway, I know perfectly well that you can't exercise your heart without burning calories, but I thought there might be some strategies for getting the most out of a cardio workout that consumes the fewest calories (short bursts of intense cardio, perhaps?) Thanks!

Read the ticker backwards - I'm trying to gain!
