Our new priest washed 12 peoples' feet, and then they in turn washed others' feet. Very symbolic!

I love the liturgy of the Holy Thursday Mass.

What if we woke up tomorrow with only those things that we thanked God for today?

There are some fundamentalist churches who see the washing of feet as a sacrament and do it every Sunday. I just came back from my new church, and they were washing feet of volunteers in the narthex rather than as part of the service. With the altar pulled out in the modern fashion there just isn't the space to have it as part of the service, I guess.

Washing of feet

At the Last Supper on the night before he died, Jesus washed his disciples' feet.

This is told only in John's Gospel. John does not tell about what Jesus did with the bread and the wine. He wanted to place the washing of feet front and center.

When Jesus finishes, he says, "As I have done for you, you should also do." These words are very similar - and just as strong - as the words of Jesus in Luke after the bread was
given to the apostles: "Do this in memory of me."

Because in John's Gospel Jesus commanded his followers to do this, it is called the "mandatum" (Latin for "mandate"). That is why this day is referred to as "Maundy
Thursday." The early Church had two "mandatums" for the washing of the feet - one was for the washing of the feet of\ the poor and one for the washmg of the feet of clergy.

The washing of the feet is meant to express a simple act of kindness, humility and service.

On Holy Thursday in 2013, only days after his election as Holy Father, Pope Francis broke with tradition and washed the feet of 12 young prisoners at the Casa del Marmo juvenile detention center in Rome. The participants included two women and two Muslims.
