"Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, respected by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to summon you to his house
and to hear what you have to say.'
- Acts of the Apostles 10:22

St. Cornelius, centurion

While St. Longinus may be known as the centurion who thrust his lance into the side of Jesus, the Church also honors another centurion as a saint.

Cornelius was a Roman military officer assigned to Palestine. He was in charge of a large regiment in Caesarea and, over the years, also became known for giving alms generously to the Jews and for his constant prayer to God. The Acts of the Apostles gives the account of his baptism by St. Peter. Cornelius later became the first bishop of Caesarea.

The memorial of St. Cornelius the centurion is celebrated February 2. Some consider him to be the first Gentile to convert to Christianity.
