On Pentecost, the choir sang the sequence between the gradual and the Gospel, and the priest had to tell people what it was. I understand that people like the new mass, but we should all at least know our own liturgical history. If you told someone that Pentecost was a first class double with a privileged octave, they wouldn't know what you are talking about anymore. It's complicated and has its own vocabulary, but you'd think the kids who are obsessed with Harry Potter or Game of Thrones would love the minutae of it.

I loved the pre-Vatican 2 Church... some of the changes have been good, but some threw the baby out with the bathwater. It think there is balance finally beginning to appear. I am very fortunate to attend a parish that is very traditional. Our priests are Oratorians.

Thanks for reminiscing with us. There is a pastor in a parish near me that still does a Latin Mass on Monday nights. Only about 8-10 people come, but he continues. He also does a nice Holy Hour on Sunday nights with adoration, Liturgy of the Hours, a rosary, and meditation. Only about 15 people come on a good evening, but he still holds it every week!

You are right that we have to search these out. Our parish priests are so busy and pulled so thin. They are reminders of when we were young in the church. I loved the formal liturgical setting too! You made me smile!

When I grew up you didn't have a choice of parish, you went to church in the parish that you lived in. The Episcopal Church was the same until 1979. I went to an Anglican Church for 25 years downtown because it is still High Church: priest, deacon and sub-deacon, the altar against the wall under the reredos, so the altar party faced the altar rather than the congregation, altar rail, no women in chancel. If a woman spoke it had (still does) to be at a lectern in front of the rail, only ordained personnel in the pulpit. The music is the old mass settings by Palestrina or Victoria, all in Latin, and paid singers because the music is too complicated for untrained singers. All of the propers are in chant. The Catholic church of my youth had no music at all, ever. It didn't even have a piano let alone an organ or choir or hymnal. Music in parish churches rather than exclusively at the cathedrals is, in my mind, one of the great advances of Vat II.

Catholic clergy are stretched too thinly to be able to do such formal masses anymore, and I don't think many people would enjoy it on a regular basis. But I so miss the old, formal, liturgical settings!

I am back at the Catholic Church this year after many decades, and I was shocked this morning, on Trinity Sunday, not to hear the Athanasian Creed. Or sing the Hymn of St Patrick "I bind unto myself today, the strong name of the Trinity". I can understand not wanting to take the time to chant the Athanasian Creed in procession, but to eliminate it altogether? This is my first Trinity Sunday in my life without that. What happened while I was in the Anglican Church?

I have never met Erin (the victim). but have heard so much about her from my friend. members of her church community have stepped up and started a scholarship for her younger 2 kids so they can stay in christian schools, Family friends are also helping make sure the little ones are getting new clothes for summer and other needs because mom cant take them shopping. Also some spas/therapy centers have offered her certificates to help with her rehab.

it was a shocker for our community and in a strange way that is something to be grateful about: people in my area are capable of focusing on the needs of others and still feel grief over these events. my in-laws live south of Milwaukee and everyday the newspaper has stories of shootings. there is no remorse over many of those victims, nor grace (forgiveness) and guidance for the perpetrators. mostly just more stories of vengeance or omission of victims and help they would need.

Eliza - I'm glad your mother has you as well as another person to visit her and brighten her days.

IMREITE - how terrible! I'm sure your prayers are heard very well in heaven. May God grant healing to that brave woman and give her strength, comfort, and courage as she recovers, helps her other children, and mourns the loss of her husband and children herself.

this week was emotionally difficult. The person i sit next to at work, sharon, had some bad news. her friend and his 11 year old daughter were shot and killed. his wife was shot 3 times trying to protect the other 2. It was a random shooting. no reason. just a depresssed angry person who wanted to cause pain and then killed himself. he trained with our local police force. i did not do well with my daily praying. i felt myself tearing up when i thought about it they tend to be short and spontaneaus, but they are sincere. i was numb about it at work, mostly trying to stay strong for sharon. I felt bad for the police. they lost someome they knew. they train to help people but could not reach their own. i pray for the remaining 2 kids. they are so young. hopefully their church family helps the fill the void. also the mom. she lost most of her blood on scene. she has a hard enough recovery but to also learn her husband and eldest child are gone has to make the pain virutally unbearable.

I have an old friend who always talks about "shooting prayers" to God. He said that if you find yourself going more then 10 or 15 minutes without simply acknowledging God, "you must be gettin' awfully damn busy". It isn't worship, of course, just a reminder that He is God and I'm not. I find it comforting.

Our bathroom remodel project is almost done. The plumber finished the connections on monday so i have a working sink and shower in that room. still some finishing things left but it is close to being done.
i have been mentally busy and not focused on my prayer habits. Some stuff is not important, but it is stuff i want to have done so i figure it is not worthwhile to procrastinate on it.

my hubby starts his new job. this job is about 200 miles away from our house. so he will be staying with my parents. the timing is bad. we are also working on remodleing our bathroom. we did not get it all done so it was a stressfull week. he is staying at my parents and coming back here on the weekend to finish. we were so busy so i went to 6pm mass tonight at a different church in my area. it was a casual service. 5 minutes before they asked for volunteers to lector. i debated it but was not sure if it was only open for parishiners.then at communion they asked for people. it was neat. if i go back next week i may go up if they ask. i lector, greet and do communion at my parish i am leaving so i do enjoy serving during mass.

emoticon Just dropping in for a minute... DH has been not feeling well, and we went to doctor. The EKG wasn't normal, so they are sending us to a cardiologist as soon as they can get him in.
I've been sort of "out of it" for a week or so. learning about what "desolation" really means... I didn't even boot up laptop yesterday, and killed my 282 day spark streak.. SIGH. Perhaps this is just the let down after Easter? I refuse to let it get the best of me! I will rest in the Divine Mercy, and allow Him to be my strength. I'm all out of strength at the moment.
These "blues" are going to have to take a hike! LOL!

Try reading the Daily Office. You can do that anywhere, and it removes the barrier of having to get in the car to get to the right place at the right time.

CJ, I dont know if this is lukewarm or I am busy. Or, I am making "busy" as an excuse. Although, I'm still the same. It's just hearing the Daily Mass faded... only the Sundays and holy days of obligation. And, within myself I don't like this!

Meditated on the conclusion of the Divine Mercy Novena... and found myself in it... I am growing lukewarm.. maybe not so lukewarm but not the same as my old self. And, certainly do not love my current self.

Religiously did my Pilates and some stretches for my knees today. Hope I can maintain this.

Off to church. This is a new church for me and I have no idea how they'll do Maundy Thursday. They never covered the statues or crucifix on Passion Sunday, so there won't be much to strip. I'm unaccustomed to a small altar party, only a priest and two altar boys. I'm used to the old Sarum priest, deacon, sub-deacon fully vested in chausable, dalmatic and tunicle, and acolytes in cassock and surplice. I don't know if they will use that clapper for consecration tonite. They don't even ring sanctuary bells for regular consecrations.

I NEVER heard of ANY dietary restrictions (besides MEATLESS FRIDAYS & on Ash WED.) during LENT! Never heard that about Hot Cross Buns, either. Growing up, they were ALWAYS readily available during Lent, starting on Ash Wed.

Legumes, veggies and grains. And only 2 meals a day at that. It is a true sacrifice. Orthodox Christians have about 180 fast days per year. All those "wonders of the Mediterranean Diet" don't usually mention that aspect.

I thought hot cross buns were only for after midday on Good Friday because in the old old days you weren't allowed dairy, eggs or oil (or meat, fish or poultry) through Lent. Orthodox Christians still follow that, thank God it's no longer expected of us.

HOT CROSS BUNS USED TO BE A "STAPLE" DURING LENT!
Sadly, the past few yrs., they have REALLY BEEN HARD to come by.
Also......THIS YEAR was the FIRST YEAR I didn't see ANY IRISH SODA BREAD for St. Patrick's Day! NONE of the stores around here had any!

There just must NOT BE any CALL FOR IT in this area! emoticon emoticon

I used to make hot cross buns every year on Good Friday, but they don't fit into my food plan anymore. Alas.

I went to our church yesterday and since I have a key, I was able to go in and spend some time alone with the Lord in the Tabernacle. I needed the uplifting, so instead of praying quietly, I opened the hymnal and sang some of the songs out loud to God. My voice isn't great, but I figure that He gave me the voice, so He's going to have to love it...:) I do love to spend time with God in the parish when it is empty except for me and Jesus. There's something special about that! Amen

I just got home yesterday from helping out with my mom who is not doing to well. I helped my brother out who is her caregiver and since he gets the calls me and I go over there to help him out and I'm glad that I do that for him. Didn't gain any weight but I lost the weight I did gain and it was only couple of pounds that I gain once in a while and the stairs and getting up from the chair and couch it did help me out a lot cause I ate some junk food but not a lot of it.
Keep in formed on how my mom is doing.

The church cancelled everything except one mass yesterday, and again today. They need to get that lot cleared. I hope they can push the snow far enough to the perimeter of the lot. Parking is hard enough without mountains of snow taking up a bunch of spots. It is still about 20 but will go up to the 40s tomorrow and 50 on Sunday!!

Weather is just too weird! We were 73 yesterday, chance of snow tonight, and 37 now. March has blown in with a bang!

Wednesday night was the 2nd installment "Hour with Father" . Our faith formation leaders try to create adult sessions as well as scheduled organized classes for students.

Father answered general questions about catholic faith, traditions and parts of the mass.

emoticon I know Spring is coming, but is isn't showing any previews here today... Dense fog. I cannot see the pastures across from my house. Visibility on the roads must be very low. It is 42, so it's chilly, too. Dreary days sort of suit Lent... but we know the Son is going to shine again. We can continue on with hope, and be assured God is in His heaven and all IS right with the world at this moment.
It is not easy to try to live in the present moment, and to give thanks when things are dreary, cold and damp. Yet it is asked of us to trust God and believe He has our best at the heart of His plans for the day.
I'm off to pray and then to get the household up and running. DH and I have bowling this afternoon. Good exercise and good fellowship.
May the coming week be filled with peace for all of us!

Love the picture. Puts a smile on my face.
Spring hopefully is not far off. That is always a beautiful time of year. One of my favorites.
Just back from mass. We usually go on Saturday, but went out last night and decided to go 730 am mass today. It is nice to go on Sunday once in a while.
