I went through the stuff we kept when my mother died and I found the holy water font we had. It is a guardian angel, and the colors are a bit faded, but I cleaned it up and mounted by our front door and got some holy water for it. I am so thankful of this reminder.

I was raised with Holy Water in the house at all times. My older brother suffered from terrible sore throats and hacking coughs. My Granny told my Mother for him to rinse and gargle with Holy Water....and it worked!! I now have a small Holy Water Font by my front door and bless myself when entering and exiting my home. I have my 2 year old Grandson blessing himself with Holy Water frequently. He does so in a very adorable, yet respectful way. Also, at times, sprinkle Holy Water throughout my home.

Here in Malta our homes are blessed once a year and always during the Easter Conclave. Tomorrow our home will be blessed by one of our local priests, and is a Sacrament not to keep off evil but to wash away all the anger and bad feelings that have happened during the previous year so that our homes are renewed and blessed with God's love. Holy water is a Sacrament used to remind us of our baptism so when we bless ourselves we are acknowledging Gods love and renewing our commitment to him. It only takes a few drops to bless our homes.

We bless ourselves as we leave our homes, simply to take God's love with us wherever we go.

Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.

Marie

Interesting topic!

That's funny, ANDROMEDA, that you never thought to use it to bless yourself. It's strange sometimes how our minds work, isn't it? I'm glad you've realized now!

Come to think of it, I'm thinking of purchasing a Holy Water font for near my front door. Then, we can bless ourselves every time we go in and out of the house.

As to the blessing your new house with vats of Holy Water ... correct me if I'm wrong, God is all powerful. I'm thinking that a few drops of blessed Holy Water would suffice to bless your home. Do you have a copy of a house blessing? Alternately, you can ask your parish priest to bless it for you.

There is a tradition among the Filipino families in our parish to get their new cars blessed. They bring them to church, and Father goes out with his Holy Water container and a palm branch to bless it. He always says, "Got a 'car baptism' now ..."!

cj

What if we woke up tomorrow with only those things that we thanked God for today?

I don't put bleach, but I wash the bowls in the sacristy as soon as they get yucky. Also, I empty, wipe out, and re-fill the big urn that sits in the vestibule pretty often. It's the big urn that worries me, not the bowls.

I take communion to the sick at a local hospital and one man wanted me to give him holy water and while I will give out rosaries, I am not sure what would be done with the water.
He had gang tatoo marks all over his body and neck. I prayed with him.
I had been instructed not to carry holy water with me.
As a carrier of the Body of Christ, I was told to keep to my ministries instructions.

But I am thinking I may start carrying a small bottle to bless rooms out in the hall so I do not go against what my priest has instructed me to do.

I am also worried about the cleanness of the water. It sits in a container in the vestibule and anyone can dip their hands in it to retrieve the water.
Would it be Ok to put a drop of bleach in the water to assure that it will not spread infection?

I work in the church office and have done so for almost 10 years. We have many Protestants asking for rosaries and instructions on how to say them, Holy Water because they think they may be harboring a ghost, etc. I always warn them that sacramentals may not be put into the trash if broken, but must be buried. Holy Water may not be put into any sink which connects with a sewer, but only on a plant or on the ground. We also have a parishioner who brings in many, many items to be blessed. I always worry about how these things will be used or to whom they will be given, because I am concerned about how they will be disposed of. I do think that sacramentals can be used in a superstitious way.

You have reminded me of that habit from my childhood. My mother had a little holy water receptical at the front entrance of our home and we would bless ourselves when we left. The tradition was dropped at some point, and I don't know why. Hmmm.

I have worked in the same office for 25 years but I was reassigned to a satellite office for about 8 months. When I came back there were a lot of shifts in the management and bad feelings and just ugliness so the first morning I came back to the office full time I came in super early with my bottle of holy water and sprinkled all the supervisors offices as well as my work station and I think it helped. I actually think I will do it again after reading this post. I want to not only protect myself from evil I don't want to be close to it in any form.
People that are not catholic sometimes think of it as superstitious/silly but if the church uses it to baptize us then it is good enough for me.
I have heard of some people drinking the water and I read they ran tests on holy water and there was a lot of bad stuff in the water because it is not filtered or tap water so I wouldn't go that far.

And I am just the opposite! I have a Holy Water font that I got in Israel hanging next to the garage door (the most used door of the house) and I bless myself every time I go out. I remember my grandparents having a font by the door and using it faithfully upon leaving their house. When I was in Israel I decided to "resurrect" (pun intended!) the habit. I have been in my new house now since November and I've yet to invite the priest to come over to bless it. I need to put that on my "to do" list!

For years (at least since 2004), I have collected Holy Water that was blessed at Easter. I would take 1-2 vials for my self and 1 or 2 for my family in NYC (the "vials" are actually medicine bottles donated by a local pharmacy). I would use the holy water to spray (in a little spray bottle) the doorways and windows of my home. I carry some in ALL my purses and the intent is to ward off evil. I have even had fantasies of using a tankerful (yes, one of those huge tankers) to spray holy water inside (especially the basement) and outside any new home I happened to purchase (you can't be too careful, as any sci-fi/horror film will show you). But in all this time, it never, ever occurred to me to use it to BLESS MYSELF--that is until I read the response of one priest to a reader regarding Holy Water in "The Catholic Answer". I don't know why I never thought of it. I do it without thinking when I enter and leave the church and Yet it never occurred to me to do that at home, especially when the intention is to ward off evil. So, last night (and this morning), I blessed myself with some of my Holy water....However, I STILL would love to drench any new house with massive amounts of Holy Water , inside and out. Hey, you never know
