Did you know that the original Pentecost is 7 weeks from Passover, and the Jewish people celebrated it at the time that the Holy Spirit descended, so the early Christians called the Descent "Pentecost"?

I had always wondered why the Gospel readings referred to "Jewish Pentecost", then, when I learned the history, I realized that they used the term first and we had borrowed it for our celebration.

"As a mighty wind": the effects of Pentecost
June 06, 2014 District of the USA

Catholics all know the story of the descent of the Holy Ghost on Pentecost—but do they truly understand the effects of the Holy Ghost in their souls?

In his liturgical-catechetical work, The Church's Year, Fr. Leonard Goffine offers some illuminating insights on the significance of the Feast of Pentecost, including an exposition on the gifts and fruits of the Holy Ghost.

Instruction on the festival of Pentecost

What festival is this?
It is the day on which the Holy Ghost descended in the form of fiery tongues, upon the apostles and disciples, who with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, were assembled in prayer in a house at Jerusalem. (Acts II)

Why is this day called Pentecost?
The word "Pentecost" is taken from the Greek, and signifies fifty. As St. Jerome explains it, this was the last of the fifty days, commencing with Easter, which the early Christians celebrated as days of rejoicing at the resurrection of the Lord.

Here, we celebrate Ascension on the Sunday following as well. Here in Canada, we actually have only 2 Holy Days of Obligation, if you would believe: Christmas Day and January 1st.

Fortunately, many times on the other HDO in the States, we have a school Mass, so I get to participate anyway!

All praise be to God.

I went to Mass Thursday, too. Our Diocese has moved the day to this Sunday, but I still went to Mass and for me, it was Ascension Day anyway! LOL!
DrNic, glad you are moved! That can upset the apple cart, but emoticon emoticon
I am beginning a new book this week by Richard Rohr... Silent Compassion. Not sure why I bought it, but I am supposed to read it. I enjoy it when the Spirit sends me in a new direction!
Marie, my prayers are being lifted to heaven for you!
I am pondering the Visitation today... how do I carry Christ to the world today? Is my house in order, to welcome visitors and offer hospitality? Am I taking care of my body so that I can have the strength to be hospitable?
Time to get moving...
Peace be with you!

I have lost track of the time of year. My mum is so ill and my husband needs so much care, that I don't know where I am at the moment.

Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.

Haven't been around for a while. We just bought a new house and moved Easter weekend. We're finally settled (mostly). The best part about the house is that we are about half a mile from Church. We have started walking to Sunday Mass (and when I can I walk my daughter to and from school).

These books sound really interesting. I am going to look them up. I am sure I saw James Martin in a programme on TV, he was wearing a collar but was not given the title of Father. So may be it wasn't him.

Religious-wise I was brought up by Redemptorists and they played a big role in my life and I made some really wonderful friends. I am willing to give the Jesuits ago though - nothing like a change lol.

This week is full of determination for me. I am using the Spark book to kick start me into taking control of my weight. Its full of good advice and motivation.

Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.

No, I haven't read any of those. There was no time for any "pleasure" reading during this past semester for me. And I survived ! LOL! Tomorrow I need to get over to our library as I have a book ordered for the book club at church - it's by Mitch Albom - The first phone call from Heaven. and our meeting is next Wednesday. In between it it packing and painting and moving into the house we bought. Not fun but oh so good to know it's ours. I was happy with everything except the wall colors. Totally not to my taste and so simple to change - just not easy. Will probably leave my bedroom until later as what I thought was deep texture is wall paper and will need to be removed.

CATHOLICCORGI- I have not read "The Jesuit's Guide to Almost Everything", I've recently fallen in love with the Jesuits, having written two term papers that they factored heavily in this semester. In reading the "Relations", I have learned so much - they were amazing men. I wish they still wrote documents like this.
I'll look into Fr James Martin, thanks

St Catherine of Sienna was the topic of my term paper for the class that brought me back to the Church. I am going to read that one, most definitely.

emoticon JUNEBUG4967!!! With time, I know my DH will understand about Our Lady, and how she "maneuvered" his conversion, one day. He's still trying to remember to say "Amen" at Communion! Progress, not perfection!
Andi, I really enjoyed the Catherine of Siena by Don Brophy. It was a long read because it was in depth history. I wanted to understand where St. Catherine was coming from, and this book gave me a good dose of 14th century history. Have you read "The Jesuit's Guide to Almost Everything by Fr. James Martin? I loved it, as well as his Between Heaven and Mirth. I just started the My Life with the Saints.
Facilitator for my PRH workshop just sent some new material to read before Friday's session. Guess I need to go read and ponder it...
Hope everyone is having a good holiday...

How wonderful ! Prayers answered!! My hubby is a cradle Catholic, does not behave like one some times (or maybe he does!) so I have turned my prayers for him over to our Blessed Mother. She is doing great things for him. Yesterday he had our deacon consecrate him to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. He has made his 5 first Saturdays at the church in our diocese that does only Latin masses. On top of all I had going with school and trying to buy a house, I was asked to be a sponsor for a young lady who was asking for confirmation. She had been baptized and was receiving Holy Communion, but could not say for sure that she had been confirmed. I am so glad to have moved to the Mystagogy phase now.

Yes, my precious DH became Catholic at the Easter Vigil! God be praised! He has attended Mass every Sunday with me since that night. I thought he might balk at this morning, since I was Lector at 8am, but he didn't! He recorded the Grand Prix of Monaco, and will be home for two other races broadcast today. He will be focused on the TV all day... emoticon I'm going to read, pray, and have my own mini retreat today. I finish my PRH workshop(Living in Harmony) this Friday evening.
I am reading Don Brophy's book Catherine of Siena, Dr. Perlmutter's Grain Brain, and Fr. Jim Martin's My Life with the Saints. What a combo! LOL! emoticon
I may ride our recumbent bike and watch the TV programs I've recorded. Perhaps EWTN has coverage of the Pope's visit to Israel on. I forgot to set the DVR for that... but I've listened to the Catholic Channel on Sirius radio. Lino Rulli and Fr. Dwyer keep me in stitches!
My eating plan is helping me keep inflammation at bay. I sure miss my tomatoes, potatoes and peppers, though! It is worth not being in as much pain. There are too many other foods I like to waste time grieving over three or four I choose to not eat.
Sunday blessings sent to all!

emoticon Good Morning! emoticon
Several parishes in the Charlotte area have Perpetual Adoration. A small chapel is planned when we complete our new family life center. One of the rooms in the present building will be converted to a Chapel when we move the classrooms over to new building. There was a notice in the bulletin last week that we have been approved by diocese to begin building construction in mid summer. Our Church is open everyday, so I like to just stop in and sit with Jesus when I can. I like having the Host to gaze upon at Adoration, but I feel comfortable being with the tabernacle in the sanctuary. I know He is always there. DH is learning to look for the vigil light when he comes into the sanctuary to see if Jesus is present.
Long day at work ahead. But a good day!
I look forward to it being a quiet weekend. Maybe some yard work is in order? Hmmm...LOL!

Eliza, Maltese is from the Arabic language from the days when Malta was invaded in the 1500's. It's Semitic and has a mixture of Italian in it too as most of us (not me) watch Italian tv.

We have a perpetual chapel here too and its so lovely and quiet. They close it over the weekend, I think in case people decide to go there instead of to Mass. Its a comfort and a joy to spend time with our dear Lord, it's like stopping the world and getting off and feeling peace come all over you, before you step back on again.

Thanks for posting that video. They are certainly storming heaven with their prayers (as well as the chancery office). May the Lord grant their requests.

We have a perpetual adoration chapel in our city now. It's been here since 2008. I love going there for my weekly time slot.

Very interesting videos. I do go to a perpetual adoration chapel. It was founded to pray for the end of abortion and is directly next door to our local provider. It is called the Holy Innocents Chapel and Foundation. it is open 24/7 and almost all the time the Host is exposed. My husband has a standing time commitment and I go when I can due to school.

During mass someone spoke of the perputal adoration chapel in my area. it is located near another parish, The speaker told us a little bit more about it. I did not know but the chapel is sponsored by that church, my parish and 3 others.
Has anyone gone to a perputal adoration chapel?

All tests are done for this semester! P T L !! Now to wait for the results. It is taking some to wind down from all the pressure, shopping yesterday and a ladies out morning is helping. Tomorrow is busy: Mystagogy class, Mexican lunch with the group and then 4PM mass with the archbishop so those who were baptised and confirmed and received first communion can get their certificates. (I started late as a sponsor for a young lady who was confirmed. She also started the program late and had received the first two sacraments and was wanting her son baptised.) Nexyt project is painting inside at the house we bought, packing here and cleaning to be out by the 31st. I am looking forward - not to the work but getting in a place that is our own home!

Giving thanks that the semester from heck is over! I put in an overnight-er - and finished my 30 page paper today.

I have an 11 day break and will take my last class for my Master's program!

Take Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, all that I have and possess. Thou hast given all to me. To Thee, O lord, I return it. All is Thine, dispose of it wholly according to Thy will. Give me Thy love and thy grace, for this is sufficient for me.

I got up early this morning and got myself ready to go to Mass at 9.30. What a wonderful gift I had when the darling man said 'wait for me, I am coming with you.' It was a wonderful Mass, and an English Mass (I have been attending Masses in Maltese which is exactly the same as in English but the Sermons have to be translated in my head, which is not easy).

That you God for this blessed Day.

Happy Mother's Day

Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.

Hope In the Cross

Christianity does not offer a life free of suffering. But from the cross we see that our suffering does not need to end in death; it can bring new life. This is the hope God offers us, which the world cannot give.

Sorry I haven't been around. My students took their English exam on Saturday so this week was supposed to be house time and SPARK time but my computer decided to play up instead. Any way, here I am ready to go and feeling fit for anything.

Tried the Pilates dvd but couldn't get my bum off the floor no matter how hard I tried. So I think I will do the standing Pilates and salsa as I can manage that.

Part of the Plan

God has a plan for us that we may not understand at the moment. As the day unfolds, however, we often come to see clearly His amazing grace. He tends to lead us on the paths we may never have journeyed on our own.

Easter Prayer for Life

Lord Jesus, In rising from the dead,
You have conquered the entire kingdom of death.
Make me a voice for life,
Especially for children threatened by abortion.
Fill me with Easter joy,
For you live and reign forever and ever.
Amen. emoticon

Glad you liked it, Eliza! It's very catchy!

IWANNAGOAT - is that the one wherein the lector reads the Creation story from Exodus, and the psalm is sung interspersed with the reading?

And the sung response is: "And God saw that it was good; and there was evening and morning"

Cantor: "the first day"

Then, a bit more is read, and the cantor and the congregation sing: And God saw that it was good, and there was evening and morning"

Cantor: "the second day"

If so, that's the one we do. I love it!

Then, we have a spoken prayer after the second reading, then we sing "Let us sing to the Lord, He has covered Himself in glory. Let us dance for the Lord, for He has been our Saviour", after the 3rd reading.

I sing the psalm after the 5th reading "We shall draw water joyfully, singing joyfully, singing joyfully. We shall draw water joyfully, from the wellsprings of salvation."

After the 7th reading, we sing "People of Israel listen, people of Israel pay attention, people of Israel dance, people of Israel, dance for joy!"

Do you guys do similar ones?

I just love Easter Vigil!

Our pastor is very supportive of the music ministry and we also sung the Exodus story at Vigil -and I did the Creation. The congregation seems to like it as they can join in.

I've been humming and singing one song from Holy Thursday's Mass all weekend. And it's one I don't particularly like, so it's very annoying!

www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJl6tXwOaGk

These are the right words, although we sing it a lot faster in our choir.

Praised be God! I woke up almost pain free today!
Riding the stationary bike for 22 minutes yesterday helped me sleep through the whole night. emoticon I used Ben Gay on my heels, and there is very little pain in them so far today. The bike doesn't put any pressure on them, so I can use it until I am cleared to walk again on the treadmill.
Saying the DMC on the bike is easy. The bike has a book stand, so I am going to read about St. Catherine of Sienna as I ride this week.
Another week to praise God, and Spark the days! emoticon

Hi Leah!
Congratulations to you and your husband on his reception into the Church! How wonderful!

I'm glad that your plan of eating is working for you to release pounds. Sorry to hear that your heels are swollen and sore, though. It is difficult to get exercise when you are in pain. The bike may be helpful to you. Also, do you swim at all? That would be great cardio without weight-bearing, so not aggravating your heels.

emoticon I forgot to start the Divine Mercy novena on Good Friday!

And yesterday I forgot the Rosary for the 54-Day Rosary Novena.

My mind is so full of so many other things right now!

Yes - I am really looking forward to the canonizations next week!

A blessed Easter day to you and your family.

We had heavy rain for two days... but we were able to have our Easter Fire under cover, and everyone was able to get their candles lit and process into he Church. SO beautiful!
What I have prayed for, for almost 37 years, came to pass yesterday evening. The promise Our Lady made to me a very long time ago bore fruit. My DH was received into the Church, along with four other Candidates. It was not easy to keep"dry-eyed", but I did. The service was long and very spirit-filled. I almost feel a little "lost"... but I know this is only the beginning of a whole new adventure for my DH and I. The Holy Spirit has great plans, of that I am sure. It is now a time of giving thanks, and waiting for God to move.
The problems with the internet have been pretty much resolved. Unfortunately, SP is part of the problem. All of these ads that are downloading eat a lot of data, and many take so long to download because of their size, they "time out" in Google Chrome or Firefox, and it isn't jiving with my laptop. SP could be slow to load to begin with, and now the ads compound the problem. Oh, well! it will work out eventually!
As to my Sparking, I am holding my own. My low carb/low calorie days regimen seems to be the best way for me to release the pounds. The key to it all is exercise. Unfortunately, my heels on both feet are swollen and sore. I've not walked on the treadmill for over a week, and walking in general is not too much fun. I am going to try to use DH's recumbent bike in order to keep some concentrated movement going(hopefully no actual body weight on the feet will help). I am still bowling, but very carefully and slowly. The scale has crept up about 7 pounds in two weeks, so I am drinking more water and being more strict in my eating to compensate. In times like this, it is easier to just stick to the bare basics and be sure to keep up good nutrition over weight loss. It's about being healthy and fit. Not thin and miserable! LOL!
I began the Divine Mercy Novena. I hope everyone will remember that next Sunday is the Feast of Divine Mercy, and try to say a Chaplet or two.
What a joy it will be to have Pope Francis canonize two of his predecessors next Sunday!
I continue to remember everyone in my daily prayers and at Mass.
May the Joy of the Easter season remain with you always!

We are going to get seasonal temps today for the first time in about a month! All praise be to God!

We might even get to go outside for our fire tonight for Vigil, as long as the wind dies down.

Really? That's awful! I thought in all of Canada and the United States that mandatory breaks would be law.

I'm so sorry, Eliza. Take care of yourself.

That is exciting that your dh will be experiencing Palm Sunday for the first time!

Is he to make a statement of faith this Easter season? Or be baptized?

I will be praying for you to htreadmill.trength, Eliza! I stand all day, too, some days. I forget to "move" for long periods. It's not good! I hope you can get even a small break!
I slept in this morning. I am looking forward to DH's first Palm Sunday. We have RCIA this afternoon and then the last church bowling night for the season.
Have missed being on SP regularly. Haven't stopped praying and saying Rosaries for us all.
God has been leading me day by day. It is a growth-filled Lenten season this year. I am grateful God loves me enough to correct me... His tough love is not easy, but it is always for my good. My burdens are only heavy when I try to carry them by my own power, and refuse to allow God to direct me.
My exercise and eating plan are coming along nicely.
I see we have several new members! emoticon
Time to get going and hit the treadmill!
Good weekend to everyone! Peace be with you!

Eliza - why don't you get a break, sweetie? Isn't that illegal? I will pray that you are not sore and that you are able to get through the work day!

Pray for me today because at work, they have me standing 10 hours without a break to sit..yes I can take a bit of bread or something but, I have a neck injury and it is hurting today...I already worked 40 hours this week, they had record numbers with this new opening and, they still are all just mad...I do prep. and, they don't have the ingredients sometimes to do the recipes and, so it is not my fault..my feet hurt too...

I love that - "God is forever renewing His love for us, even though we are unworthy". Very true!

Spring is a reminder that the world is forever changing. Time waits for none of us. I am also studying complaining and unrealistic insecurity of my heart and soul. I had done the rosary but stopped for many years. I just recently started again before I joined this group. I am so thankful I God is forever renewing his love for us even though we are not worthy.
Hugs and Prayers Creativeheart5

Today's lent study was about complaining. it mentioned how the isrealites complained instead of celebrating their freedom. nothing was good enough for them so they were more miserable. They were not able to find opportunities because they were to busy whining.

I complain/gripe/whine everyday. I spend less time fixing or finding success with issues because i am to busy whining. I now have to apply this to my daily activities. the complaining is childish and ineffective. it also shows a lack of real gratitude. it is one thing to day "thank you" but it is another to mean it.

Eliza - yes, please eat, dear!

Thanks for starting the spring thread, Leah! It is still chilly here (although warmer than it's been), and we still have tons of snow, so I didn't think of beginning a spring thread yet!

BABCIATEA - we have a Perpetual Adoration Chapel in our city; my friend and I go for an hour every Saturday evening. I love it!

Spring has arrived, for most of us emoticon
Time to renew our spirits and prepare for the Resurrection!
New life is bursting out everywhere, and we have another opportunity to become the best we can be! Nothing is impossible if we place our lives in God's hands.
Lent is almost over!
May our Lenten season end with much joy, and may we give thanks for the gift of God's Son!
Give praise to God! He IS risen, indeed!
