My good friend also said something similar - she told me to participate at the Communion service, and pray for all those in the outlying communities who often do not have a priest present. And to also pray in thanksgiving those weeks when our priest *is* present to celebrate the Mass with us.

I have friends that live in a small town called Glen Allen alaska. Their priest has to travel 2-3 hours to do mass for them. he is oftem late or cant make it due to weather, So they tend to do more prayer services than mass. When the normal priest is gone, your parish can often be tested and perhaps not attend any service. So definatly be there to support your community.
The spirit of keeping sabbath time and supporting my church community would be my focus not just checking an obligation/chore off my weekly list. Our faith should be celebrated not looked at as a drudgery. So, if i felt the need for more, then i would attend another service but otherwise use whatever you experience as a way to further inspire your faith.

I would probably just to support your own parish, do the Communion service.

Barbara .....that's what my friends call me! Never cared for the name Barb.

ANDROMEDA - good point. And you're right - it will bother me!

thanks for your opinions, you guys!

The last time this happened, I didn't know about it beforehand, so I felt it was a case of it couldn't be helped sort of thing, but as I had prior knowledge this time, I knew it would bother me.

If I were in that situation, I would attend a mass as well as the communion service.

I would advise you to attend a mass in addition to the communion service, especially if it's going to be nagging at you. No sense having that bother you for forever (because you know it will)

Hello all.

I am wondering what all the wonderful Catholic Critters would do in this situation ...

Our parish priest is on vacation for two months (for his health). In his absence, we have some great, generous priests giving of their time and energy to celebrate the Mass with us. However, on two weeks (this week and next), there was no one to cover in our priest's absence.

There are some incredibly talented, and trained, lay ministers who will be doing a Communion service for us these two weeks.

Now, as a part of the music ministry, my dh, my ds, and myself will be attending for those Communion services to fulfill our obligations to our ministry.

As we live in a large city, with numerous opportunities to attend Mass at various times and places over these days, and as we are physically able to travel to another parish, do you think we should make the effort to attend a Mass as well as attend our Communion service? It feels strange to me that I will not be participating at Mass, as I have rarely missed Mass except for a few times when we were out in the country and weather did not permit the travelling priest to get to the little town where we were staying.

Your thoughts/comments would be appreciated.
