Good evening all. Thinking about the upcoming trip to our daughter's for the week before Easter. Have to tutor every day of the week after school, so all needs will have to be met before and after that. Housecleaning to do (hate to come home to dirty house), laundry to keep up, packing, route planning, baking (to take goodies to grandkids). It's supposed to rain all weekend, so I'll have plenty of time to plan! I hope everyone has had a blessed day!

Hello all!

Glad so many are enjoying the outdoors of their family, and getting some exercise to boot.

The sun is shining here! It's lovely! Still have tons of snow, but as the wet carpets and dripping roof is attesting to - it is melting!!

Eliza - sorry to hear of your weight gain. Hang in there! Perhaps a bit less at one or two meals? A bit more moving during the day?

Maria - that's a rough time of year! I'm sure they are grateful for the assistance you give them.

Cold rain. Yuck. I'm not a big fan of rain, unless it's the middle of a hot, dry summer and the earth needs to cool down a little.

Today I am feeling very positive - the support I am getting is immense. So I am changing my weigh in day to Fridays and will be completely honest with myself.

Checking a thesis today and just finished giving an o'level lesson on English Grammar to four students. This month of April is going to be tough as this is the last month before their exams.

Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.

Today I weighed in and I managed to lose a pound. Don't praise me as I don't feel I earned it after having had such a hard week. I re-set my goals and did a bit of soul searching and my ticker is showing the weight I gained. I think it was all stress and feeling hungry all the time, which is what I do when things don't go well.

So my challenge is to eat within my calories and actually follow the diet plans as much as possible - I tend to put down what I want to eat rather than what I should eat. I have ordered a pilates dvd as I did hurt my foot while doing the salsa. As Spring is with us and the days are longer I will do my best to get out walking with my husband - I really do need to make much more of an effort.

Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.

ANDI_3K - I usually don't mind winter - we go skiing and sledding, and snuggle up watching movies. But this year - it has been so very very frigidly cold. And as soon as it stops being frigidly cold (we're talking -40!!! emoticon emoticon ), it snows and snows and snows. Check out the pics on my page for an idea of how much snow we've gotten! It keeps snowing, then melting, then dropping down way below freezing again, so we have skating rinks for roads and paths now. It's getting a little much for those of us here.

i am enjoying my lent readings, a few i dont realate to all that well but one of the books had a prayer for each day:

Lord jesus, Keep telling us stories. Our journey, immense and long is full of darkness and confusion. Help us see your love through your parables.

I like this one.

Totally agree with you , Marie. It is wonderful to begin the day with prayer. Got in a 30 minutes walk arounf house while praying the luminous mysteries. Daily readings in our daily bread have also been very helpful. Hope the snow/rain stops intime to go to the Thursday Lenten programat church this morning

I am enjoying my Lent as I now look forward to spending my time in prayer and meditation. Getting through my mornings can be stressfull, juggling chores and shopping and cooking, so when I go to my room I am sometimes in knots. As I begin my prayers I can feel the tension but when I am finished all the tension has gone and I can only believe that our dear Lord has taken it all away.

Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.

i am doing well with my lent challanges. i am working on learning a new prayer, getting to know more of my church members, doing my daily readings and meditations. i did have a large temptation today. i gave up mountain dew for lent. i was telling some people this at lunch. when i got back to my desk theire was a bottle of dew. i started at it, debated it but let it sit. about 10 minutes the guy who left it there, teased me and took it back.

i beat the temptation but only because i decided to give it up as an exercise in faith.

Son of God is playing at our theater but I have not seen it. A number of friends have, and they highly recommend it. I think I will wait for it to come out on DVD & get it from Netflix! I like watching stuff at home and just generally relaxing! I weighed in this morning and had lost a bit more than usual, so I am eight lbs. from goal. This in spite of fixing several delicious but meatless Italian recipes for Lent! But I tried to eat a normal serving, not a dinner plate full! Happy St. Pat's Day to everyone!!!

There was a documentary about the Son of God on the BBC, and it was brilliant. I will look out for the film, thank you.

I just wanted to share with everyone, and ask if any of you have seen Son of God, yet? My Husband & I went to see it this afternoon. It definitely is a movie to see and bless your Lenten Season. I was very glad I had more than Kleenex with me. I had a hanky in my purse, and I was wiping my eyes very often throughout the movie. It was a movie beautifully done. I'm so glad we had the opportunity to see it.

See it if you can. You won't be sorry.

I started reading The Imitation of Chris and its brilliant. I am reading one article at a time or two if they are short. I tried reading it before but I wasn't ready for it, but now as I read I appreciate what Thomas A Kempis means and it is awesome.

What a hectic week I had last week. It started off ok, but a hospital appointment for my husband on Wednesday brought everything to a stand still. It took all day and we were exhausted when we got home. Yesterday was going to be a quiet day, but my students wanted an extra lesson before their exams today, so of course I said yes. Time just flew.

So here I am hoping that next week will be better, but only God knows what he has in store, so I will just have to with the flow.

Hope you are all having a good weekend.

Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.

Bene - Yay for new glasses! Sorry to hear about your cat - was the vet able to help with an anti-itch medication for it?

Hi Leah! Sorry to hear that your computer is still giving you issues. Hope that gets fixed soon.

IMREITE - that is very supportive of your dh! I hope he finds the experience to be meaningful for him.

Cool link. Thanks!

Today was a half day of work for me. The staff at my school was supposed to have Mass and then a spiritual retreat/inservice with our director priest of our school in the morning (and then the other educational assistants and I were off in the afternoon), but he was ill today, so our lay youth minister/parish assistant led us in prayer. We then watched an episode of Father Barron's "Catholicism" series. It was the third one - soooo good! I am really enjoying the series, and wish we got to see more of it, and more frequently then twice a year.

i found this link in the past but found it again and wanted to share it
www.usccb.org/bible/books-of-the-bib
le
/index.cfm

i am on my computer a lot and found links like this are helpful. I own a bible, but if i see something posted i want to follow up on it, i can click and read the passage.

my dh read my Lent calander last night and laughed. Earlier in the night he suggested we go visit my parents. We had not seen them in a while. Ironcically the activity on the calender for that day is to visit a Senior you know and just listen to them. He started laughing. I did a bit too. He is still feeling sick so he is not doing well with avoiding Coke, but he asked me to NOT pick up any from the grocery store. He is trying but he did not grow up catholic so giving stuff up for lent is not natural to him. He is not catholic but is very supportive and wants to grow with me spiritually even though he has had bad exberiences.

After work yesterday, I got an eye exam and ordered new glasses to replace the ones I broke! This evening, I have to take one of my cats to the vet. Believe it or not, he has allergies and he has scratched so much he has some sores and a very short-tempered mom, as he keeps me up at night with the scratching. Hope everyone's week is going well and is productive!!!

emoticon Good Morning! emoticon
Wanted to pop in and say "Hi!" to everyone! I'm on limited use of the net right now, so until it is straightened out, I'm being very cautious about being online. Verizon has a real problem here, and I'm not trusting it.
Doing well on my low carb/ low cal plan. Have lost almost 16 pounds now. If I can average 1 pound a week, I will be very happy. God IS good!
Eliza, I am a strong believer in using Holy Water around the house. I keep a large bottle of it always. I have a small bowl I keep filled on my dresser to bless myself with it before bed each night. It may seem like a small thing to do, but it has helped me sleep soundly. I also have a small bowl on my bookcase near where I pray each day. Holy Water is a powerful reminder of God's protection and that we are covered by His Love.
I hope everyone will join us in our Novena. The Rosary is such a great gift, and a powerful weapon to satiate the thirst of Christ for souls. Saying the Rosary will inflame our hearts with the Love of God and arm us with Our Lady's merits and graces. We can accomplish much for God praying the Rosary!
May everyone have a blessed day!
Peace be with you!

You're right. I never noticed that. Two fairies, but no angels,

There are no crosses either, and I know many people have repeatedly asked, but we never get any.

ELIZA - sorry to hear about your mother's friend. May God have mercy on her soul and welcome her into His Presence. Would you feel better if you sprinkled some Holy Water into that room, and asked for God's blessing there? Perhaps that priest that blesses articles would be willing to bless some water for you to use there, or even better, to do a house blessing for you?

Marie - thunder eh? We won't be hearing that for many months yet, I'm sure. Sorry Mass didn't work for you today. But happy for you that you got to prepare a healthy lunch for you both.

What a cold wet, thundery day we had today. Said my daily prayers and Novena and Rosary this morning and did some crocheting. We were supposed to go out for lunch but the weather was so bad. Got up this morning ready to get to Mass and found my dh fast asleep on the sofa so couldn't do a thing for fear of disturbing him. Had to cook lunch instead but it was probably a lot more healthier than going to the restaurant lol.

Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.

Hi...
I too have given up soda, I pray the rosary in the mornings and divine mercy, our priest is coming to town today...he was sent to Shafter, TX but, he comes to offer the Traditional Latin Mass, he also blesses items people bring and, they bring many items, salt, water, pictures, crufixes, etc. I am taking a necklace my Mom gave me, several of them, her picture I had made at JC Penney once, she won't go to mass..I don't want to push her anymore she is 92 and, I want her to go to confession and receive the eucharist but, she does not want too.
I love the poem about the boxes, I keep having a dream of something big and "black", once it was at Moms then it was near me in my room.....I woke up scared. What could that be?
My Mom said it was St. Teresa because she has a picture of her in her room..to me it was
a bad spirit......I don't want to say what I think it was...I don't like that word. Mass is today at 5:30 after the rosary.. First Sunday in Lent, Mom was sad yesterday her friend passed away, she had cancer of the blood. Bless you all.

The building was really neat, CJ! The bottom level was a gym/multipurpose area with a kitchen. The upper level was a large meeting area, kitchen, and class rooms. It had an elevator and bathrooms on each level. There were probably some offices, too. Most of the Protestant churches in our area have these multi-use buildings they call Family Life Centers. Now the Catholic churches seem to be building them, too. Some are on the small side with mainly gym/large meeting spaces. Some are built to have school classrooms added later, too.
Perhaps I can find a link to the parish we visited, so you can see what it looks like.
DH went to Mass this evening. Didn't realize we would hear the same readings as at the RCIA ceremony. And wouldn't you know we have prayers sung in Latin tonight! DH was really getting a dose of the "old" Mass! LOL! He says it is always different each time he has gone. You can't get bored...LOL! I said wait until you are Catholic for a while! Perhaps we should all look at it as new each time, too! God doesn't bore... we do!
Time to go to bed... time changes tonight! Lose an hour! emoticon

Hello!
I like traditional sanctuaries as well, but always enjoy visiting other parishes to see the different decor, loving the fact that although our worship spaces may differ, we are all one Body.

What is a Family Life Center? What would they use that for?

Good afternoon!
The RCIA ceremony we attended today was interesting... DH says he wonders what he is getting into! LOL!
Everything was in English and Spanish. DH wasn't used to that. The Church was as if Frank Lloyd Wright had designed it. Very modern and sort of "sparse". I am into more traditional sanctuaries, but this was unique and nice. They have a killer Family Life Center! I wish my parish had one like it! Lots of meeting space and TWO kitchens!!!
I'm off to 5 pm Mass, will write more when I get back.

I love it! Thank you for sharing that, Marie!

I really need to let go of some things, and this was a beautiful reminder for me.

Interestingly enough, the priest I mentioned, Marie, was also named Father Pat. He was born on March 17 into a devout Catholic family. His name could only be Patrick, eh?

God's Boxes

I have in my hands two boxes,
Which God gave me to hold..
He said, 'Put all your sorrows in the black box,
And all your joys in the gold.' I heeded His words, and in the two boxes,
Both my joys and sorrows I stored,
But though the gold became heavier each day,
The black was as light as before.
With curiosity, I opened the black,
I wanted to find out why,
And I saw, in the base of the box, a hole,
Which my sorrows had fallen out by.
I showed the hole to God, and mused,
'I wonder where my sorrows could be!'
He smiled a gentle smile and said,
'My child, they're all here with me..'
I asked God, why He gave me the boxes,
Why the gold and the black with the hole?
'My child, the gold is for you to count your blessings,
The black is for you to let go'

Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.

When I was in my twenties we had an Irish parish priest, Fr. Pat. He made such a difference to my life and gave me all the encouragement and support to become a Catechist. He was the best friend I ever had and I loved him dearly. The saddest thing was when he passed away and I couldn't tell him when I was in trouble. I know he would have been there for me and I do believe he is watching over me too. I miss him too, but God took him home and gave him the rest he so needed. We are so lucky to have these experiences, because they are what carry us through our lives.

Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.

Marie

I agree, Marie.
I had a wise and wonderful priest who not only brought me into the Church (he gave me Jesus!), but who was my usual confessor. There was a big hole in my heart when he moved. He recently passed away, and I miss him, but I feel closer to him now than when he moved! I have had much reason to pray for her his intercession. I believe he is praying very hard for the school where I work, he was the director of it for years.

CJ that's such a great idea and I am sure that whatever you do will be an inspiration for others.

I am making sure that after lunch when its quiet I say the Good Shepherd Novena, a Chaplet to our Lady of Sorrows or tears, or a Litany and prayers. Today I managed to say the Rosary.

Years ago I bought a prayer book on short prayers for morning and night taken from the Priest' breviary and I am trying to get back into the swing of starting and finishing my day with this.

My parish priest once said rather than just give up sweets etc, make time to pray - so that's what I am doing.

Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.

Thank you for all the wonderful and interesting posts to read.

I like how we practise the faith with such love and devotion, but in slightly different ways as we are unique people.

I am allergic to a lot of seafood as well, Leah. But I eat pasta and things like that. If you are eating paleo, then I imagine that those are not part of your diet at the moment.

I have given up diet soft drinks for Lent. I have been getting awfully fond of them. I am also planning and alternately leading staff prayer services every Thursday morning of Lent. However, I was not sure what else to do. I am asking God to show me instead of me planning.

This morning, my elderly neighbour asked me if I was going to the grocery store. I was planning to, in order to purchase groceries to make 8 L (2 gallons) of chili for the soup kitchen for this coming Sunday. I was able to drive her to the store. What fun!

I'm so glad I had the chance to do such a small, but important for her, task.

I am in my 60th year, but I can't say that I will miss eating meat on Friday. My husband loves his food so when he asks for meat I usually give it to him even if it's on a Friday. But now that Lent is here we will both give up meat every Friday. My husband is 84 by the way, so he needs to eat what he likes when he likes. He is definitely past the age of fasting, but tomorrow and Good Friday he will do his best. My mum is the same, she is 86 and she will do her best to fast.

Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.

emoticon Good Morning! emoticon
emoticon on all of our successes!
Lent is a time to reflect on who we are, and what God would have us to become. The price He paid for our redemption is perhaps beyond our understanding, but we can gain insight by making the most of our Lenten Season this year. We have another opportunity to bring new disciplines into our lives, and to form new habits. Let's take advantage of all of the wonderful traditions our Church offers us, and also take advantage of all of the tools SparkPeople gives us to become healthier.
Time for another new beginning!
emoticon Choose to approach Lent with an attitude of thanksgiving and JOY!

Step into the unknown with confidence! Trust that in the darkness of that first step there will either be something solid to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly!
Nothing tastes as good as living with less pain feels!

11.5 pounds lost is amazing....good for you! I will almost be 59 and can then eat meat, but really it isn't good for you anyways..
I want to try to meditate at home, do morning and evening prayers, I am waiting to go for training for a job so, please keep me in a prayer for employment..I know I can go to the prayers area and post there too..

It got cold here again... emoticon kind of cloudy too.
sun wants to peek out..

I am somewhat glad to be beyond the age of fasting. With dieting, it might be too much! Reporting in with a 1 lb weight loss last week with a total of 11.5 lost and 11 to goal!~ Half way there! Lenten Bible study beginning this evening, so I'm checking in early!!!!

I also don't eat meat on any Friday of the year. I am past the age of required fasting, but I can still eat less on Fridays.
I will do my extra Lenten readings, and also attend Mass on at least one extra day of the week.
I have chosen the food I will give up - Nutella, and possibly all chocolate; I haven't decided on that yet.
