Still researching as well.

I have been re-living the "painful memories" of when I had to pay the $50 COD charge when I purchased those textbooks. emoticon

I seemed to have deleted the emails from the issue (probably in a fit of rage). However, I posted on line to my volunteer organization, and just reread those posts. Unfortunately, as it is the volunteer area of the organization's site, I cannot post a link to the board. However, basically, there was a lot of empathy, but little practical help.

One woman did mention that to avoid the "brokerage fees" which is what we would have to pay, is to ensure that the company shipping is mailing the item/s not sending by courier.

Also, I have sent an email to an acquaintance who had some info when this all happened, she may be able to suggest a company. I'll be back when I hear from her ...

So, CJ... I'm still researching...

I've had a very poor response here on SparkPeople.... funny I'd have thought more people might have some experience with this... and Canadians tell me I should shop Canadian (and I DO for the most part), and Americans tell me the probem is Canadians are scammers, LOL!

There are companies that do this, and I guess I just have to do more on-line research. When I know more, I'll come back and share with you.

Until then, to reiterate:

I am researching 'international shipping and mail forwarding‏' companies:

Does anyone have any experience with companies who do this (good, or bad), or who use/know of any reputable package and mail forwarding services?

I am asking help in vetting companies who provide this service.

I'd love any help/information you're willing to share about international shipping and mail forwarding‏ COMPANIES!

Thanks!

I, too, am curious about this information. I ordered textbooks from a US company for my volunteer position. The books were covered by my volunteer organization's monies. However, even though I was told they shipped to Canada, and had "free shipping" because of the amount I spent on the textbooks, and they marked it "educational material" (I didn't see any such marking on the package, but they swore they did it for all their packages), I was charged HEFTY customs fees.

I sent many many emails to the company, speaking with more and more senior admin each time, until I got the person in charge who told me that it is not cost-effective for them to cover the costs of the shipping and border fees/taxes. And this was a fairly big book company (Hale Publishing)!

I was also told that some companies absorb the cost of the shipping and excise taxes, etc.

When I am not jet-lagged, I will have a good think and see if I can recall (or pull up the old emails) regarding the whys and wherefores, and the ways around the problem.

Although, I liked Andy's solution, as I live closer to the border.

Let's get back on track:

I am researching solutions to companies who will not ship internationally.

There is a solution to the problem... it's called 'international shipping and mail forwarding‏' and I want to know:

Does anyone have any experience with companies who do this (good, or bad), or who use/know of any reputable package and mail forwarding services?

I am asking help in vetting companies who provide this service.

I'd love any help/information you're willing to share about international shipping and mail forwarding‏ COMPANIES!

...but if it's the stuff we're bringing in, why am I having such a hard time getting things OUT?

I was returning to the US from Canada summer 2001. The US agent stopped us and asked, "Sir, are you transporting contraband specifically any exotic animals such as parrots or other tropical birds, snakes, reptiles, or amphibians, small primates such as monkeys or macaques, or other mammals?" I looked at him and shook my head. "Um, nooo. You do know I am coming in from Canada, right?" He smiled. "Smugglers will trans-ship through Canada.

Little did he know that I was smuggling in Cuban cigars. Trans-shipped through Canada.

Heh heh heh. Stick it to the man.

Yep... gotten worse, for sure.... and I never voted in favour of NAFTA. It was obvious to me that our end of the deal was not particularly beneficial.

...And yes, I have contacted several... I'm simply re-directed to company policy. If they're big, they don't care about individual consumers and they rely on their Canadian distributors for revenue (which also don't care if a few conumers don't get exactly what they are willing to pay for), and if they are small; they can't afford the cost of satisfying cross-border 'hoops'.

Interesting tidbit... I've posted this question on seven teams, and on one team a member informed me that the reason the FBI continues to control the border, and that customs are so difficult (her sister was informed thusly by her bank), is that a lot of scammers come out of Canada.

We seem to be 'good neighbours' only under certain circumstances, LOL!

However (I'm not looking to start a political scuffle), to reiterate my reason for posting:

Have you contacted the companies who won't ship to Canadia about why? I thought that was what the NAFTA that got shoved down our throats was supposed to be all about. But it's only gotten worse it seems.

We work close to the US border here in BC. My friend has her items shipped to Blaine Wash and when it arrives she travels over the border to pick it up. Joys of living and working close to the US. Sorry, not aware of any other way to get US items shipped here.

Thanks for responding, Andy!

As I already stated, I am aware of 'international shipping and mail forwarding‏ companies' (nope, not close to the border), and if you could find out what company your friend uses, I'd really appreciate it.

Hi Ramona, not sure where you live, but if you are lose to the border there are two options I know. You can rent a US PO box and have items shipped there or second, there are companies that will accept your purchases and you pay a small fee. Sorry, I cannot think of a name right now but a colleague of mine uses one.

Hi, everybody!

I originally posted this in the SparkPeople Cafe (not much of a response), and I realize this has very little to do with why we're all here, but I've always been amazed at the wealth of information Spark members are willing to share on anything and everything, so I've decided to ask my question here (with some background):

I am a Canadian who appreciates all the amazing opportunities for shopping on-line (I've been doing it for years now with no problems), but of late I have increasingly run into more reputable companies unwilling to ship to Canada... they are usually small and still very local, but have some truly amazing products... check out www.thegrommet.com/

When I've encountered this issue in the past, I've actually had lovely SparkFriends willing to receive my packages and forward them to me, but I'm now looking for a more independent solution.

...and please don't suggest I just shop locally, LOL (or tell me how unsafe it is to shop on the internet... my experience has been otherwise... and I practice due diligence)! My point is that I WANT to shop internationally without restriction (one of the most wonderful aspects of the internet), and my only option for some of the vendors now on my radar is to shunt items through a 'package and mail forwarding service' (there are A LOT of them). I trust SPARKlers waayyyy more than any other on-line resource for reviews and information... and yeah, I've already googled the issue from every perspective possible... still difficult to tell the scammers from legitimate companies, LOL!
emoticon

Yes (as it's already been pointed out to me), it is likely that small grassroots companies don't want the expense of customs hassles... but there are MANY larger companies that also won't ship to Canada... which, BTW, I think is ridiculous. Recently, I had the experience of having to replace a child's kitchen through insurance (our house flooded and we just wanted some things to 'go back to normal'). We loved that particular kitchen for so many reasons and we found it... at Toys R Us USA... and they would not ship to Canada... not even if our local Canadian outlet requested it, and Canadian stores, on-line or otherwise, didn't carry the item. Really? All things considered (Trade agreements, etc.... and the fact that many American companies are already well established in Canada), I can't understand why there should be so many issues with shipping between Canada and the US.

So, does anyone have any experience with (good, or bad), or use/know of any reputable package and mail forwarding services?
