When I am aware that I have been driven to distraction during a homily, I ponder on Christ Crucified. This is easier when I am seated closer to the altar and can gaze upon the wounds of Christ on the Crucifix that hangs over the altar. I have also pulled out my Kindle and opened up my Bible and pick a Psalm...I know that seems rude, but we had a priest that constantly talked about movies and tried correlating his sermons with them. I found that very annoying as a constant homiletic technique.

My attention span during Mass has a LOT to do with the priest SAYING Mass! It is very difficult to remain focused when he is just DRONING ON & ON. I have also had priests that I could listen to ALL DAY! Not everyone is good at PUBLIC SPEAKING; & while I don't go to church to be ENTERTAINED, I don't go to be BORED OUT OF MY MIND, either.

It makes me feel better that I am not the only one that is distracted! May the Holy Spirit descend upon all of us and bless us with attentiveness!

I agree that I sometimes zone out, especially during the homily if it doesn't engage me right away.
I also find that I can zone out while praying the Rosary and the Chaplet. Thank goodness for the beads, though sometimes they get used more than once while praying the Rosary or the Chaplet.
It is really hard to quiet my brain!

emoticon That is the beauty of sparkpeople, isn't it? This connection between like-minded people. I love it!

I was thinking as well that I find it hard to give period. Give of myself, give up control, put all my trust in God, during worship, and outside of worship.

emoticon Leah!

Worst time in terms of what? Getting reading on time as the devil likes to put up roadblocks? Or worst time in terms of losing focus?

I have had some difficulty with focus during Sunday Mass, and since I started reading along in my Magnificat, it has helped. I'ved always taken notes during the homily, as writing(and reading along with things) has helped my memory. The worst time for me on Sundays is before Mass...

Step into the unknown with confidence! Trust that in the darkness of that first step there will either be something solid to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly!

I also have a hard time keeping my mind from wandering both during Mass and while I am praying the rosary. I had already planned to discuss this with my spiritual director the next time we meet. I think a short prayer beforehand is an excellent idea.

I have actually started taking notes during the homily. I find that it does help me to pay attention and to actually apply the lessons to my life. I did so at today's mass. I wonder how many good lessons I missed before I thought of taking notes

Hmmm...I have heard others saying they take notes during the homily, Cheryl. I wonder if that would help me, as I am such a visual/written learner and "listener".

Well, i have the same trouble, staying focused. My mind wanders to other things that i need to do or people for whom i am concerned... so, i give those wandering thoughts and people to God too and ask Him to help me focus and be in His presence. During the homily, i take notes which helps me and then i can refer back to them during the week for further study. emoticon

I also have a difficult time keeping my focus where it belongs during Sunday mass. I ask God for help when I'm praying before mass begins. Daily mass is much easier, I think because it's so much shorter and there are fewer people there.

The warm milk (the coffee warming it up) would act like a sleep-inducer, I can believe that.

I, too, struggle with paying attention. Now, with my kids older, and I don't have to shush them or keep them from crawling or walking all over where they're not supposed to, you'd think I could pay attention more. Usually, I can, but other times, *pfffhhtt* My mind wanders again and I have to drag it back.

Someone once suggested (maybe on this group, maybe in another circle of Catholic friends), that we offer that frustration at losing focus up to God. Offer it on the altar as the priest offers the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of our Lord Jesus.

Also, something else that helps me is to read along, in those new books we got (I suppose your parish would get them too, after the new translation?). Reading always keeps me focused on what is happening. Especially when the priest changes a word slightly or mis-speaks, it keeps me on my toes as I follow along.

Now that I am in the choir, I am focusing sometimes on the songs coming up, or the Psalm I am about to proclaim, so I get nervous, and then lose focus. I try and breathe, and pray, and drag myself back again.

I know what is hard for me to "give " in worship is my attention. My mind wanders too much if I am truly alert or I end up falling asleep if I am not alert enough. I hate it because I know I am missing out on a wonderful experience that I will never get back. When I am actually alert AND paying attention, I get so much out of mass and I am not sure how to maintain that. Sundays seem to be the big problem. I haven't had that be an issue at daily mass (as long as I have had 2 cups of black coffee (sugar only)--because adding milk makes me tired.
