Interesting twist on the original question, Timothy. Thanks for weighing in! You make good points.

Perhaps a better question might be, When does striving to avoid vanity become neglect of the wonderful body the God gave us? Weight loss is not just about vanity. It's also about keeping healthy and fit. Taking care of the gift of our life. I do not consider it vain that I lost a lot of weight and got healthy and fit and my looks did improve, but only as a by-product. I had placed myself in mortal danger by becoming obese. I had put my family at risk too. It was more than just gluttony. You might have been able to add sloth to the list of sins.

I would say that for most of us, gluttony and sloth or indolence are far more likely sins than vanity. We all have mirrors and we all know what we really look like and let's face it, vanity, even after losing 100 pounds, is not really something most of us would be in danger of.

Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible and suddenly you will be doing the impossible -- St Francis of Assisi

Good point. Our intentions may sometimes be imperfect, but He can guide us to more holy outcomes. I, too, struggle with why I am doing this. Is it for strength, endurance, and a healthy cardiovascular system? Or to look better in my jeans?

I think cj hit the nail on the head in referring to our bodies being a temple. When struggling with vanity (and we all do) I try to ask myself "Am I reaching for this goal because I want others to see how good I look? Or am I doing this out of thankfulness to God for this body He has given me? Will this keep my temple one in which He is pleased to reside?" For me, it can be tough to answer this honestly. But I think God will be pleased with the effort, even if I don't always get it right.

Mmmmm...you ask a good question.

For me, overeating is toxic and very unhealthy to my body (my "temple of the Holy Spirit"). Therefore, as I make strides to eat healthier, exercise more, and get enough sleep, I am taking care of that with which God has gifted me.

I do see what you mean about the line between health and vanity, though. How much is too much? Where is that line?

Perhaps asking our Guardian Angels and God Himself for guidance is one answer?

Hi I'm very new to SP and I wanted to ask you experienced Catholics - do you ever feel that you are caught in a struggle between disordered habits (like overeating) and too much self-love (as in vanity)? I realize that we need to find that balance, where we are relearning how to care properly for ourselves, developing our disciplines, etc., but sometimes I feel that I am attributing TOO MUCH attention to myself in this area.
Anyway, I appreciate the positive support and interesting material on SP.

God bless!

May God bless you and keep you...
