Patti, you're a canning goddess! I've never heard of pickling radishes either. How do you serve those veggies? With a salad or just on a relish tray?

It's warm here again and I've already been out watering the garden and enjoying a chat with DH. I need to get my walk done this morning so I can mark it off my list of things to do or it will be haunting me all day.

That's DEFINITELY a man thing, Patti! LOL

Congrats on the Jackpot and nice score on Kohl's. I may have to see about wintering my geraniums. I've never heard of hanging them upside down.

Sorry BUT...I had to post this !!!

Read all the way to the end
Time is like a river. You cannot touch the water twice, because the flow that has passed will never pass again. Enjoy every moment of life. As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Nova Scotia back country.

As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions.

I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late.

I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this homeless man.

And as I played "Amazing Grace", the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head was hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen anything like that before, and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."

Apparently, I'm still lost....it's a man thing.

When you have stopped laughing be sure to forward this on to others who would enjoy a good story.

Years ago when I just brought the potted geranium in and kept it at a window; they did get tall and spindly. Can't remember if they even flowered at all. Nothing I wanted to repeat. Maybe they need the dormant time.? I will hang this one dry again this winter; the cutting that took too if it blooms this summer. Happy Monday! Raining here now.

Hi All and Welcome to Our New Week !!!

I picked a Quart of Red Raspberries Yesterday in the misty rain !

Got 2 pints of dried onions out of the dehydrator...

Had Some Kohl's Cash and % off...so I bought Elena a Starter Nesco Dehydrator Just Because ! I really didn't need anything and I hate to lose the extra money !

Went Gambling and won a Very Nice Jackpot.
Came home at 5:00 and fell asleep for 3 hours !!! emoticon
Needless to say, I was up until 2:00 watching a movie...
Laundry today and checking on my gardens...
THE SUN IS OUT !!! emoticon

I read that when you over winter geraniums, the next year the plants are spindly and have less flowers ! Looks like you are all proving that Wrong !!!

I have two geraniums that I bought at a discount because they were pot-bound and withering at the store. I pinched them back, put them into the ground and watered the heck out of them. They're getting lots of new growth now and have bloomed twice. I don't have any in pots right now.

Yours looks fabulous, Joy!

I used to grow Geraniums all the time. I don't remember why I stopped. I need to get some plants and set some in pots along my front porch.

Yesterday's weather was odd. It was cloudy but not too bad. Then it rained furiously for a few minutes. Then the sun came out for a while. Then, it rained some more. Then the sun came out. I worked in the yard for about fifteen minutes and then.....more rain! We then had a little more sun before it clouded over for the rest of the day (but no more rain).

I have a big pot of vegetable soup on the stove for lunch (what my grandmother always called 'okra soup', since okra and tomatoes are a big part of it). The house smells like onion and tomato, yum!. After my splurge for lunch (and spaghetti for dinner) yesterday, I need to take it easy-food wise--today.

My wintered over Geranium has survived two storms this week; I would expect the blooms to be gone as my roses took a beating. Just can't get a good geraniulm down. It's been fun watching this one come to life and thrive!

I love chewy breads, too. Low carbing my dh due to the diabetes which means I am not eating as much either----but I do eat some.
We have had a lot of rain here, too---had to move my hanging baskets under shelter so that they would not get any more rain yesterday as they were too heavy and I know that the plants were pretty water logged---putting them back out in the sun today so hoping they do okay---at least I have not had to water anything this week, even the pots.

Terri...It is so easy...Do Try It !!!
I Cold Packed it with a light syrup (10 cups water to 2 cups sugar).
Put prepared pineapple in hot jars (I did mine in tidbit size to chunk size) and ladle HOT syrup over pineapple in the jars.
Wipe rims and add flats and rings to figure tight.
Process in Hot Water Bath for 15 minutes.
That's it !!!

3.25" of Rain Yesterday and More Expected Today !!!
I guess we are going for the Wettest June Record !

June in 1902 is the wettest June on record in Cleveland with a total of 9.77.
We are now, officially, at 8.11.
I wish I would have kept track of my rain gauge as I know here we have had more than that !

READER, those sound like some of my favorite foods--especially that chewy bread! Sadly, I think I must be allergic to bread--it causes my butt to swell--so I try to stay away from it as much as possible.

All of those canned goods look delicious.

My yard still looks good, because it's been raining on and off all day so no one else has been able to do any yardwork. The bad news is that I had planned to do some weeding and trimming and it's too wet (maybe tomorrow--if it doesn't rain, the ground will still be soft enough to make pulling weeds easy).

Today is my 'treat' day (I allow myself one meal that isn't on my usual diet), so I treated myself to a shrimp po-boy for a late lunch after doing errands. (For non-southern people who might not know about the goodness of po-boys, this is fried shrimp with mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickle on French bread--and the extra chewy bread is usually brought from New Orleans.)

I had never heard of Tattler lids. I guess I'm going to have to check them out. You say that you can reuse them? How long do they usually last?

I hate it when a jar blows out and ruins all my hard work--not to mention wasting the food I'm trying to preserve! A lid not sealing isn't quite so bad because you can still use the food.

I heard on the weather report that we are supposed to expect severe thunder storms in our mountains. I'm in the foothills, but the sound will still drive my poor pooch nuts. We lost her in the last storm because she panicked and ran off, so I'll have to make sure she's secure this time!

Patti, Your "Tattler lids" intrigue me. We didn't call them that but I thought ALL lids were tattler lids! I remember the good feeling as a kid when we'd start hearing the pop pop pop as a table of freshly canned tomatoes cooled and the sinking feeling if there was no "pop".

LOL--loved that comment about how good the lawn looks because no one else had cut theirs yet---I felt the same thing this week, too.
Why did the one blow out the bottom? guessing you had to throw that jar of stuff away.
I got the summer cleaning done in the bedroom---even did a bit of redecorating while doing it---felt nice to have a really clean bedroom---now on to other rooms.

Terri...Between Cathy and me, you should get plenty of rain...I'd Gladly share, too !!!!

If you have an Armanian Cuke, they are so good and very long...Try one ! You will get a lot more !

Ima...I haven't used a gas push mower in over 20 years ! If I had one and had to use it, I would be cutting everyday...All day ! We have so much grass, we bought a landscapers mower...A Scag with a 61" deck. Even with that, it still takes us 4+ hours to cut it all...
I love when I get to cut the grass before everyone else !!! Then I see all of the guys in the neighborhood getting out their mowers and cutting their grass ! :}

I pressure canned 6 Qts of potatoes...1 blew out the bottom. So I have 5 for the pantry ! :} All with Tattler Lids and they all sealed !

I, also, got 4 pineapples from the clearance rack for 1.00 each. I will Put those Up on this rainy day. today.

No rain here today so far (and the day is almost gone)! We've had enough for the last few days. I finally got my yard mowed when I got home a while ago. It looks so much better (and since none of my neighbors have mowed theirs yet, mine looks even better!) I'm dog-tired, but I'm so happy that I got some good exercise today (40 minutes of pushing the gas mower.

I'm not even hungry for dinner, but I'll have something a little later. I am gulping down water like there's no tomorrow, though!

Terri, wish I could send my rain your way---we got a good amount last night and my hanging baskets are extremely heavy---I think I might put them under shelter as it is supposed to rain all day tomorrow and looks like it will rain any time now. and of course there is a big outdoor concert up in Dover, Delaware this weekend with some big names that is probably going to be a wash out. My tomatoes are taking their own sweet time, too---LOL

Patti, I'd gladly split that rain with you! An inch and a half for each of us, what do you say? Now, if you could just get that rain to come to N. CA, we'd both be happy.

I have several small green tomatoes showing, but they're sure taking their sweet time! I planted a Sweet 100 because I figured that the cherry tomatoes would come on sooner and ripen faster, but they aren't doing anything yet. Not even any good blossoms!

14" is a long cucumber. Don't be afraid to pick it and give it a try. It will be better tasting if it's a little immature rather than over-mature. The seeds will be big and woody. What kind of cuke is it? If it's one of those Armenians that get 2' long, I might take back what I just said.

Mother Nature is being very cooperative---rain due tonight so no watering needed except a few pots ---lots of veggies growing but know ready to pick yet.
How long does a beet need to grow before it is ready to harvest and how do you tell when it is ready?

Good Morning All, I too am enjoying an occasional cucumber from the pot on my deck; the tub in the garden I have lots of blooms but no fruit and now the leaves are yellowing. I honestly don't know if it's too much or too little water. Strange. Bananna peppers are a daily pick now.

happy Thursday all. I am checking on my garden daily. I have a cucumber out there that has reach 14 inches. It is long long! I think it is going to be ready to pick soon. I am not real sure how you can tell since I have never grown them before. It isn't real thick like I see in the stores. But I think thick enough.
I will get a pic of it and post it on here to show!

I have one, don't think it's worth the mess. Besides, it doesn't fit most jars on the shelf today. I store and keep my natural peanut butter upside down; that helps a lot. Then, stirring it with a butter knife works fine.

Have any of you ever used a peanut butter stirrer (mixer)? It's a gadget that you screw over a regular jar of peanut butter and it has a piece that hangs inside through the peanut butter. When you turn the 'crank' on the top of the jar it mixes up the PB. I've started buying all-natural peanut butter (to avoid those additives that are sometimes present in kinds like the reduced-fat versions), but it's such a pain to get it stirred up the first time I open the jar. I end up sloshing the oil out or I'm so careful that it takes forever to get it mixed up. I was just wondering it they're worth the money for that occasional chore.

'Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming -- WOW -- what a ride!

Do you mean the notifications, Cathy? I'm getting mine.

I don't think the squash plants will make it so I poked some seeds down into the hill and hope they'll sprout quickly. There's still time to have a good season here, although I'm a little late. My radishes are sprouting and most of the flowers are coming out of their shock from being transplanted, so they should be okay if I can keep them watered. I bought some petunias yesterday to put into pots but forgot my macrame' hangers at the other house. I should have brought my cord to make more for this house but forgot that too, and I can't find any around here. I had to order my current supply online. I guess the flower pots will be fine sitting around the yard.

Looks like Amazon doesn't carry the cherry pitter any longer...
Fillmore Container does and with the replacement rubber gaskets !
Shipping is not cheap here, though !

Do some web searching and maybe you can find it cheaper with better pricing. But at least you know what to look for !

2 of my blue and white geraniums I ordered have poked thru the soil---doesn't seem that the other 3 are going to do anything---going to ask for them to either send me replacements or charge me half price. I do plan to overwinter them if they do well so it is nice to see your results, Joy.

I took a Day off of Spark Yesterday ! Just wanted to do other things...

Bought 10 pounds of Huge Bing Cherries for 1.99/lb...Will be canning those today !

I'm hoping to get about 8 qts of cherries in a light syrup. Then I can do with them what I want...pies, crumbles, bread, eating, etc.

We finally got some much needed rain; should be nice today. I'm going to get out this morning and tackle some weeds. Alas my holly hocks were flattened by the storm yesterday, not sure I can salvage anything.

Haven't been here in a while but loved Joy's blogs. Since spring I've been going thru my house & getting rid of things I no longer need or want. Every room has been gone thru - except for DH's den. I'm still waiting for him to sort things. But i know this lady who supports her disabled son & herself without any help from her family. She has yard sales, goes to consignment shops & so forth to hel support them. So I just load what I want gone into the dinning room & give her a call. She takes everything & I'm so grateful for her help. It's gone & I feel so much better. Wished I'd had this mind set when I was younger!

Thank you! In a former life that dark garage was the domain of the man of the house. He left over 20 years ago. Very slowly it's been transformed to serve my needs. It now has a nice entry that also serves as a "pantry"; the garage bathroom has been redecorated and looks like "my yellow submarine" for fun, back of garage is a sewing craft area, side wall garden storage and house maintainence storage, inner wall laundry area, water heater, furnace and of course it holds my car! I spend a surprising amount of time in there. Not fancy, but very functional and a nice place to work.
