Maybe princton will surprise you. I have friends who have 3 cats. They really decorate for christmas. They put us a couple of smaller trees and one really big tre. They keep a spray water bottle handy and if the cats get near the trees they squirt them. After a while the cats leave the trees alone. Thought this might help some of you with cats.

I try and start decorating after Thanksgiving but working retail for 25 years and 5 of those years was for Hallmark it kind of made me sick of decorating. But I don't put up as much for we usually go back home to Iowa during the holdays so the only ones to enjoy the tree and all are the cats. Now this year I'm starting alittle later. Not sure about the tree this year since we got a new kitten and he is my red headed step child for sure. Never had the problem before with the cats I guess I have been blessed. So if you hear me screaming all over the US you know Princeton got in the tree and I wasn't happy. LOL

I really used to love decorating before the days of the cats. Another thing that makes me sad is having to forgo poinsettias because of the fact that they are poisonous for cats....and because I just know that Miss Kitten (the naughty girl) would eat them and get sick. Every year our apartment complex gives a poinsettia to every apartment and I have to leave them on the balcony until I can take them to work so that Little Very Bad Girl won't try to eat them.

There was much rejoicing!

I remember when my fist child was old enough to be crawling we put the christmas tree inside the playpen. Now that worked with her but it sure would not work with a cat LOL I have friends who have 3 cats and they have been lucky they dont really bother the tree.and they can be into things pretty good. so guess they are just lucky.

Okay, I answered this question in a couple of other groups, but I'm going to answer it here anyway, and I'm going to disappouint a lot of us. (Including myself.) I used to love decorating for Christmas and I think I still have a couple of boxes of decorations in storage just waiting for us to have a house and enough space for decorating and a tree. Unfortunately, I haven't decorated for about the last 20 years because when I first got an apartment on my own I also started having cats....and I've been scared to death that a cat might bring down a Christmas tree in my little apartments. I know that Little Very Bad Girl would do it for sure, so I guess I can't have a Christmas tree for as long as LVBG is still alive. emoticon

Hi girls, I love Christmas time all that it means and for the most part, people seem to be happier.

We do have a tree with religious symbols on it. Love the idea of the family tree.

We always go to church on Christmas eve and then drive around and look at lights.

Amen to that Elayne. When my kids were small we all went to church together. As they grew up things changed. Now some of my grandkids do go to church with their families. Getting ready to leave for the day. Have a wonderful day.

You don't have to go to church to be a believer. There was a time I didn't go in my life. My Hubby doesn't go, but he's a wonderful man and does Believe in God. To me that's what's important..and that we treat one another with love and respect as well. I've had some bad experiences at some churches, but am happy where I am now and am very involved on the different ministries as well as singing in the choir. Everyone has their own way of worship.

Elayne your church sounds like a very nice one with great plans for Christmas. Sorry I dont go to church but God is in my heart and with me everyday.

Wish we would hear from some other members of our team about their plans.

Shirley, I couldn't agree with you more. All the merchants ever cared about is money. One learns to think differently as one matures..hopefully. To me Christmas Season starts the first Sunday in Advent. I usually start the day after Thanksgiving though. We'll be decorating our church on Nov. 28 for that fist Sunday in Advent.

Another question...For those of you that go to church..does you church have a tree? We have a huge one in the sanctuary with religious symbols called Chrismons and white lights. Then we have a family tree in the Narthex where each family has given an ornament of their choice for that tree. Love to see the ones the kidos have made. Some have the family name on them. Mine was a hand made angel I found at a yard sale. She is really beautiful.

I know money is tight for lots but to put up Christmas things before the end of Oct is just spoiling things for the kids as far as I am concerned. Giving love is the most important thing . Childhood memories are wonderful. Never forget them

For so long now it has been so commercialized...Christmas is being pushed before Halloween. Buy, buy and buy some more. As we get older we begin to realize why we celebrate..and it's all about love...not how much we can give to another money wise or how much we'll get in return.

I can remember being happy with an orange or two and some nuts in our stocking. We even had a nut cracker to open the nuts. Sometimes we'd get a "book" of lifesavers, and that was a big deal. I always got a new pair of pajamas for Christmas...or a pretty flannel nightgown. I'd go to my Grandparent's house two blocks away from about Dec. 27 and come home New Year's day. I packed like I was going away for a month! But I stayed up, ( or so I thought) on NYE, and we'd have gingerale and ice cream at midnight. The things we remember.

Yes I do have wonderful memories and lots of family pics. But for me especially the past couple of years the holidays have just lost so much. But it does help to put up the few things for me and my son to enjoy.

I understand. At least you have those fond memories. I cherish the memories my parents made for the 3 of us. growing up.

When my kids were little and until they married. Christmas was a big deal. Even when the grandkids came the dinner was usually at my house till my husband passed away 16 years ago then it was at my daughters house. Now it seems they all work on the holidays so my son and I just go out for dinner. I do miss the old days. My one granddaughter may not be working and hopefully she will have some dinner there and we will go. Just not the same.

At least you put something up and that's what is important..some cheer in your house! I wouldn't do as much as I do if I were alone, I know that. I look forward to having some friends over a few time over the holidays, but we really are a quiet pair! I like to entertain more than DH, so we keep it low key. There is one couple we usually have over for dinner between Christmas and New Year's and I may have one or two "girl" friends over for cookies and hot chocolate, but that's about it. We usually go to a couple's house for dinner during that time too.

Christmas has always been an important time of year for me even as a child. My parents had a huge party for the music department from the school district my dad was supervisor of, so I learned how to entertain at a young age and I loved it.

Elayne thanks for starting this thread. I am anxious to see some of the replies. I am so sorry to say I really dont do much decorating. I do put up my small 2ft prelit tree. Usually 3 weeks before christmas. I put up a special wreath on the outside of my door. I live with my son who is not up to much decorating anymore and I am way beyond it also. I leave these couple of things up till New years.

Come on fans lets hear your decorating plans

Thought it would be fun to do this survey I found on an e-mail site I get.

When Do You Start Your Christmas/Holiday Decorating?

(1) Do you start the day or weekend after Thanksgiving? Or wait until farther along in December? Or, do you start even before Thanksgiving (Gasp!LOL!)?

(2) Do you put everything up yourself or have family help?

(3) How long does it take you to get everything up and reasonably tweaked . . . as I know most of us continue to tweak until we pack it all away again??

(4) When do you pack all your holiday things away? Do you get stuck doing it yourself or is it a family thing?

(5) And finally, is there anything you do to make taking the holiday decorations down and packing them away fun . . . or at least, not Bah-Humbuggy?

1. I start the weekend after Thanksgiving.
2. DH sets up the tree for me, but I do all the rest.
3.It takes me about 2 days to get it all done. I put up the tree first but don't decorate it until the next day. I do everything else first. I have a small 4 ft. white tree I do in red in our music/computer room and the 6 ft. pre-lit tree in the living room. I admit I'm always tweaking the tree all the time it is up...Just a habit of mine. I like to fuss with decorations.
4. I pack and put it all away because I like to take my time so it'll be organized for next year.
5.I take the decorations down either New Year's Day or shortly there after. Sometimes I do leave it up until Jan. 7, just depends on how tired I am of looking at it by then. I love Christmas because of my faith and also, our wedding anniversary is Christmas Eve! 30 years this year!!! emoticon
