Yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing Mark win the championship either. I'm just going to feel really bad for him if he doesn't since that seems to be the main reason he went with HMS for a year.

Mark Martin getting the championship ... I could get behind that!

Katherine, I agree with wanting to see JJ against Earnhardt Sr. with the old rules. I don't think he'd stand a chance, even to finish.

Tracey, hi and welcome! I'm pretty new here (and pretty new to Nascar, really) but I've come to love hanging out here. It's a great bunch of folks.

That's right, SC....we got stomped yesterday in the bowl game, I finally just turned it off. It seems like our team never really shows up for bowl games if you know what I mean. Ga was winning last time I checked, how did the final score end up? I live in Rock Hill...Charlotte is about 15 mins over the state line from me.

Traci, I am sorry, it was really crazy around here last night, they starting firing off things about 8:30 PM last night, we would get the cats settled down, and they would fire off another round.

Welcome to the team, like Jan said we get wild around here the closer it is to the start of the season. Again I am sorry I did not welcome you.

First of all, I'm new here, so hello everyone.

I love NASCAR! I would not even say that the 48 is my favorite but I have tons of respect for their talent and abilties.

I have always been a Dale Jarrett fan and since his retirement I lean toward Dale Jr.

Jimmie, Chad, HMS, and the entire #48 team definitely have what it takes to win #4. As for the penalalties, I don't think the 48 team was penalized at all in 2008. Chad made some comment about going all season with no penalties. Chad is probably the best at getting Jimmie's car dialed in by the end of the race.

That team tested somewhere between 16-20 times last year too. They started out way behind and worked their tails off until they got it right. I have to admire that.

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone.

I'm enjoying football right now but I'm ready for some PBR bull riding and some NASCAR Sprint Cup racing!

GO GA BULLDOGS & ATLANTA FALCONS!

When we talk about penalties, we should remember that Edwards lost points and position early in the season....and that could have gotten him the title.

Also, I'd love to see Mark Martin finally get the championship.

I think when Jeff was winning, the sport was growing in a different direction, but I think it did hurt the sport with the older (fans that have been fans for awhile) fans. I know I was tired of watching Gordon win. Also I think Nascar has changed so much over the last 5 years that when a driver is winning constantly a lot of it can be blamed on them. I didn't watch when Petty was winning so couldnt' tell you. My DH was an Earnhardt Sr. fan, plus he couldn't win the Daytona 500 and that made it fun.

Things cost too much for it to challenge a smaller team. I think JJ is a good driver, but I don't think he is a great driver. I would like to see him race against Earnhardt Sr. with the rules of old.

I very much disagree with you, but I still love you. LOL

I'm not sure I agree...does that surprise you? LOL...I don't think Petty or Earnhardt winning all those championships slowed down the growth of the sport...or Jeff as far as that goes. If anything it challenges the other teams to step it up a notch if they want to win.

Yes they do. They also get offered money by fans to let their driver win. One race this year that they had to end early (Maybe Phoenix? my brain isn't functioning right now) they couldn't go anywhere by themselves because the fans were going nuts and threatening them.

Alcohol is sold by the tracks and fans going after officials doesn't effect them at all.

Amanda, do the Nascar employees get threats from the fans? Wonder if they need to put an end to the alcohol inside the track? That sounds like drunks being obnoxious or is it sober fans too?

The issue with taking a driver out of a car does come down to money. Sponsors pay money to be on a car, if the car is parked their product is not being advertised. Suspend the crew chief and you do hurt a team but the product is still on the track.

On the flip side, most people go to the track to see (fill in teh blank favorite driver here) race. If they are parked and you have spent hundreds of dollars going to a race it's going to suck. Most fans aren't going to shrug it off and say "oh well there's always next week!" NASCAR Officials already have to fear for their safety some weeks, I'd hate to see what would happen if the Junior Nation was told that Junior can't race that week.

I'm not sure it is fair to penalize the driver when the crew chief is the one that pushes the envelope...however...if you look at the driver as just another member of a race team and everything is equal, then I can see where you can park the car. I think the way it is phrased...the car is parked...not the driver...well, it just sounds better. Let's say Eury, Jr did something to Jr's car and was caught...ok the car is parked...the whole team is penalized; now if another car owner needed a driver for that same race Jr could step in and help by driving that car...do you see the difference?

Oh, BTW Nitewalker, my feelings weren't hurt, I was just making the point that when you start talking about cheaters....you need to discuss all of them, just not come down on the same one over. From the looks of that list you posted, it looks like if something was really going to be done that Nascar would have done it a long time ago. I was not even aware of the penalties in his early career. I still say that the best crew chiefs WILL push to the limits and over if they can....that is what they are hired to do...look for ways to make the car better or handle better. If it is not forbidden in the rule books, then that is the grey area they are working in...you really cannot call it cheating. To me, cheating is that crew chief that put something under the throttle or brake pedal in the NW race this year....now that was just plain stupid and obviously was cheating...not pushing the limits; there is a difference you know.

I wonder if that would make Nascar just not find anything, because they wouldn't want to pull a driver. They need to do something to make things more interesting. There was some good racing last year but usually at the end. I slept through a good part of the middle.

Wow you guys finally came alive, I can't wait for the season to start/ As far as cheating goes, "alls fair in love and war as long as you don't get caught". I do feel bad for the smaller teams though their people are the ones who will get hurt by all the cuts. The sad thing is that these people can afford the little penalties and fines they have to pay because they get the big bucks. I think the driver should have to sit out a race or two and see what happens. Putting a sub in a car will wake everyone up.

I hope the kids learn as much from me as I learn from them,

Nitewalk6, I think you spelled out your point very well.

If they don't want the cheating, they will have to make the penalties stronger. Does that mean giving so many warnings before you are let go forever, who knows? That would have to be spelled out before the season I would think.

But it makes for an interesting discussion.

Wow what a spirited discussion. I am not claiming that others have not cheated or pushed the 'gray' area. Junior Johnson had a number of fines as did the Eury's (Sr & Jr). The discussion topic is about Johnson.
The fact is that Chad has, by far, the most penalties of any other crew chief as detailed below. Some were before he was with the 48 team but most occured while he was employed by Hendrick. Now, does that mean he cheats more than anyone else or just gets caught more? Remember, once you get caught you become a suspect forever.
3/01 Atlanta (Stacy Compton)
10/01 (Compton)
7/02 Daytona (Johnson)
5/03 Charlotte All Star (Johnson)
5/03 Charlotte 600 (Johnson)
2/05 Daytona (Johnson)
2/05 Vegas (Johnson)
2/06 Daytona (Johnson)
Is Jimmy a great driver? Yes Is he the best ever? Do titles make the man? I think that Richard Petty, the Allisons, the Yarboroughs and Dale Sr would have to head the discussion of best ever.
Is Jimmie in that discussion because he won titles? As Citabria pointed out, without the qualifying rain-outs would things be different? Makes one wonder. But the fact is the 48 TEAM won the titles.
Not just the driver, crew chief, owner or shop.
Can they do it again? Sure, but as they say "That's why we play the game."
Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings.

Also...everyone cheats. Every team tries to push the envelope to see what they can get away with and they've done it since NASCAR began all those years ago.

Renee he was caught cheating back in February along with Michael Waltrip's team. It was a huge scandal at the time.

I don't see the Cup series suffering as much as the Nationwide and Truck series due to lack of sponsors. It's going to be a tough year for all of us due to the economy.

Okay, I'm missing something -- what was Knaus caught doing?

Katherine, actually, I think it's even broader than that they want to win -- I think they just want to *race*. Winning is delicious gravy, but it's just gravy. That's what strikes me as the worst consequence of the cuts in sponsors. I don't think Bobby Labonte has any illusion that he'd win the Cup in 2009 -- he wants to race. I get that, and hope that, somehow, he (and others) finds a ride.

As for the 48 team ... I'm still not sure they would have won this year if not for all the rained out qualifying heats once the Chase started. Yes, they're a well-oiled machine, but there are some other great teams out there too (and that's not even getting into the fact that there are *much* better drivers), and I'd like them to have a fairer shot next year. I don't know how Nascar could do that, if there are rainouts again, but I'd like the to try.

I think as long as the 48 team stays intact, there is always a chance that Jimmy may win again. He is not necessarily the risk taker that Earnhardt was, but he is a smart driver and Chad knows how to dial that car in quick during the race.

Nitewalker...why do you always pick on Knaus and never mention the other crew chiefs that got caught working in gray areas and were suspended? I don't hear you going on and on about them...if you did, I wouldn't even be bringing this up. And yes, you do sound like sour grapes in all your posts when you keep bringing up the 48 team, but never mention the 55, 17, 29, 99 and others that had to serve suspensions this year. Knaus was not caught doing anything this year that I remember.

I don't think the drivers are all about money, but I do think that Nascar as in the Frances and Bruton Smiths are. I agree there will be a lot of empty seats at the tracks this year do to the economy. I know as of now (of course I have been known to change my mind by February...LOL) I have no plans to attend any of the races next year and I normally go to 2 or 3 a year. And you are also right that the field may not be full every race due to lack of sponsorship dollars...even some of the tracks are having a hard time finding sponsorship for the actual races from what I have read online.

It's way too early to tell but this season will be very interesting with the lack of sponsors that everyone needs.

Katherine they did do away with testing to save money for everyone.

Anything is possible, but I hope not. I don't think it is good for the sport. Nascar isn't what it used to be. They are going after a different crowd and I think that is hurting the sport also. Ticket prices are way to high, but the bad economy may do some good in that respect. I heard Jeff Gordon said he would take a pay cut. I don't think it is all about the money with these guys, they like to win. COT was built to make it more competitive which I think it has done in most respects.

I think they should do away with any and all testing on tracks. That alone would save a lot of money. Limiting team size is also what would help the 1 owner teams.

I know you didn't ask for all this in your question, but couldn't help myself.

That depends on if the 48 team is allowed to continue to cheat and get away with it. Sorry, don't want to seem bitter but Knaus should have been banned when he was caught the second time. NASCAR got the pretty boy, squeaky clean image the want for promotion and they will keep it as long as they can.
The high dollar money teams will be on top again this year and some races won't have a full field.
Look for the champion to come from Roush or Hendrick. Just to prove me wrong I predict this year to be the one that Jeff Burton finally gets his reward.
The France family has made it all about the money and the greed will catch up to them, same way it did Wall Street.
I spoke with a crew member from MWR a couple of weeks ago who said NASCAR was considering the elimination of an over the wall tire carrier to help cut expenses. He is one of the two carriers and was afraid he would lose his job. You suppose they think that move will save any teams enough money to make a difference?
They need to scrap the COT and return to the roots when the cars were real and the boys were men - not PR props.
I hope Tony and some of the other small independent teams don't go broke.
Without good competition NASCAR will continue to lose audience. The good news is that we will be able to buy race tickets for a reasonable price again.
Disarray is a great word to descibe our sport, sadly.

Can Jimmie do it again in 2009, especially since all the teams seem to be in disarray emoticon
