Adjusting to daily weight fluctuations and tweaking plans for nutrition & fitness
For example:
Digestion problems - food contaminant (possibly mix greens or avocados).
I avoided both and took Imoduim to stop diarrhea. With hypothyroidism and low carb diet I regularly treat constipation with water, fiber, exercise and digestive supplements.

I didn't weigh myself because I am not going t o weigh myself until I reach my fitness and svelteness goal.

I feel an improvement in shape, I have less of a muffin top than when I started the trek and my pants that were snug are fitting much better now. I can tell how my shoulders are shaping by how they fit in my barn coveralls, and I have two coveralls, one which was uncomfortably snug when I began this trek and now it fits fine. So shoulders, waist and hips have reduced size.
Fitness report, I think it is about the same, and I am working to be more focussed on improving it.

I've weighed myself Monday mornings fairly regularly for several years.

I will try weighing daily and recording a weekly average. My goal is to lose 5 lbs. every 2 months.

I weigh daily. Sodium makes a huge difference in what I weigh. When we eat out, I know the next day I will be heavier even though I picked "healthy" stuff. Looking forward to weigh in tomorrow.

I need to lose much weight, about 40 to 50 pounds. I will be more than happy with 30. Mainly, I want health. So the weight loss will be a nice bonus.

My weigh in will be a false reading because of intestinal flu all day yesterday. I am on maintenance with my weight and while I know the scale weight will really look good, I must keep reminding myself it isn't true.

Every day I am on the verge of making slight changes that would make all the difference in my life.

One day I won't be able to do this, but today is not that day

Interesting observations Krizsta! Your experiences helps me reaffirm my dedication to this program.

I'm a little apprehensive about next weigh in (Sunday for me). I worked really hard this week and I really want to see a big change. Gotta keep things in perspective though and celebrate every bit of progress. Even if I don't lose any weight this week I know I've learned A LOT thus far and that's a big accomplishment too!

Hi team,

Today's chapter is
Day 28:
Get Ready to Weigh In!

another week has passed, and we learned a lot!
Don't worry if you haven't finished the work with the thinking errors and the seven questions,
very few Sparkers can do that in one go.
Good news: we are done with the most difficult part of the program, the next 2 weeks will be downhill compared to Day 25-26-27.

We take some time to prepare mentally to our second official weigh in tomorrow.
We get a smart analysis of the 3 possible results (lost a lot of weight - lost little - didn't lose or even gained), and helpful ways of action.

Very few people lose weight in a straight line, usually it is ups and downs, just the overall trend is going downwards. Remember: daily fluctuation may be 4-5 pounds overnight, while healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. Fluctuation can hide the trend for 1-2 weeks, but rarely longer.

What are you thinking?
Please share here!

I don't have a weight loss goal, as maintain my weight within +-3 % of center.
There is day-to-day fluctuation, there are monthly sinus waves, and on annual level I'm usually above target July-October (season of fresh fruit, family birthdays and vacations), and below target February-June. Above that, there is a very small, - 1 pound per year trend.
Go figure : )
I'm starting to think the below target months may be result of October and March Beck group readings, as they always strengthen my confidence and improve my compliance.
And the longer gap between March and October readings may contribute to the small upward trend at the end summer-early fall.

Maintenance Lessons Learned:
-go on with the healthy lifestyle learned in weight loss phase
-just add healthy foods gradually to stop losing
-work out every day - 30-60 minutes is enough to maintain weight and good mood
-do not try to balance overeating by extreme workouts, it is not going to work
-avoid overeating, instead of satisfaction you get stronger cravings

So, I weigh in daily. Met friends for a Christmas get together yesterday and we ate out. I feel I made ok decisions but did splurge. I expected the scale to be up this morning due to all the added salt etc to restaurant food. So, now I'm convinced my scale must be broken! Well, tomorrow will tell the tale. I do feel like I'm doing well on this program and looking forward to the next two weeks.

Day 28: Scales

I like to weigh on Sunday because in my mind that is the start of the week and then I weigh in on Wednesday for the wolf team. A mid-week weigh in actually helps to keep me better on track. I don't concern myself on the ups and downs. But if I have an up, I do critique myself. Too much salt? Not enough water? Moon full?

I am not an every day weigher but once a week is not enough accountability for me.

Striving for strength and balance in mind, body and spirit!!

I get on the scale every morning and so the day to day doesn't bother me so much. Over time though, it is discouraging when i don't see results. As I haven't been lately.... So I'm reminding myself that the scale is a tool, which provides data which tells me whether or not what I am doing is working. I've been bouncing up and down a quarter pound for the last couple weeks and I really need a reset. I would like to be able to buckle down and be more disciplined after the past two weeks of travel. I am off work tomorrow and plan to spend some of that time exercising, cooking and planning for the week. Hopefully this will help as I head into a week with a day of training and 2 and half days of a team retreat which is likely to be stressful. After a weekend out of town, I am not really looking forward to getting on the scale tomorrow. Remember, it is just data.

Laughing at myself this morning. DH wants sauerkraut with dinner tonight. There goes my weigh in tomorrow. Or at least the posting part. I am on track and my daily weigh in is generally going in the right direction, meaning my lowest weight is lower each week than last week and my highest weight is lower than last week. Bring on the sauerkraut. Speaking of that according to Spark the tiniest amount is 2,000 mg sodium. Wow.

I also weight myself everyday, but realise how much more helpful it is when I am also tracking my calories. That helps me when the scale isn't saying what I want it to say because I have the evidence of my tracking to show that I have been eating carefully and the scale will eventually start going down. It helps me be more objective.

I had been seeing my weight climbing in small increments and I'm not seeing that now. Rather than it hanging very close to 58kg, it is now hovering around 57kg. I really want the scale to drop below 57kg soon, but this is not happening. My goal is 54kg, so close, yet so very far.

I am in bed with fever right now, so that plus my injured foot means my exercise is minimal and of course that impacts the scale. But I have a streak of 13 days tracking which I am really happy with. I think that once I am exercising more regularly, the scale may shift a bit more quickly. At least it is not going up anymore.

So, tomorrow I am anticipating the scale will be the same as today, as long as I stay within my calorie range. I am disappointed that it is slow, but understand why it is that way right now.

I smiled at the scale this morning. Going down, little by little. Solidly in goal range now. One more pound down would be right where I want to be. I know, tomorrow is the official day to weigh and chart. I'll do it. But Beck encourages daily weighing. I do not expect to be up tomorrow, but if I am I'll know it is just a fluctuation as long as I stick to my food plan today!

Day 28: Weigh-in Again!

I have been weighing in about every other day. I think this keeps me more on track and it also helps me to see the scales as a measuring tool and not the all in all determination of how well I am doing. I know my body has a natural rhythm of fluctuation and so when I do have a gain it doesn't cause me to have un-due negative anxiety.

My weigh in was yesterday and though I weigh about every other day, I was disappointed with a little gain. It was my own darn (cleaned up language for online) because I have not been doing all the things I know to do. Funny, with all the tools a person can still behave badly. Keep plowing on through!

Day 28 Weigh-in

I weigh in daily so I don't have a problem with the scale. Today I was thinking about all the NSV that I am feeling. Having lost 7 pounds in the past 27 days, so I am thrilled with my progress. I imagine that the weight loss will slow down soon as most of the beginning weight loss is water. So I am actually expecting no change on the scale tomorrow.

I've been getting better at not reacting to the number on the scale. Before I step on it, I take a deep breath and relax and say to myself "This is just information". Then I step on the scale. I detach from the emotional aspect. I know I tend to fluctuate within a 2-3 lb range on any given day. So I just look at the trend. I reflect on my week and consider what I can improve on this week. That's it, the end. No feeling like a failure, because in my case feeling like a failure leads to giving up and giving in.

Took me awhile to get past the daily fluctuations but I now realize that nobody weighs the same every day because it's a reflection of hydration, sodium intake, calories in, calories out, etc. I weigh daily but I don't let it cause me alarm. The overall trend is more important as KRIZTA11 already stated. Losing weight didn't happen in a straight downward line either...little jumps up and down along the way but again, the overall trend was down.

I’m worried about weigh in tomorrow but am going to remind myself that no matter what happens, it’s information. This is a long term process. Taking the right steps along the way is just as important for me as what the scale shows.

This turtle is to remind myself that slow but steady wins the race.

I am not looking forward to tomorrow but it will be what it will be On Day 22 (Nov 3) I was on a roll, confidence was high, I was following my plan, I weighed 127.5. I will be more than that tomorrow :( I had a disastrous holiday food intake, after doing really well on Thanksgiving and Halloween. Those are the three big food gain times of the year for me. The first two are only one day so easier to manage, holiday season is weeks long.

Looking forward to and prepared for weigh-in tomorrow.

For today
-Read ARC twice
-Ate sitting and mindfully most of the time, and gave myself credit. Monitored fullness after each meal and if I could take a walk.
-Did Sun Salutations this morning and gave myself credit.
-Stayed on plan, No Choice
-Have planned my meals and snacks for tomorrow in Spark Nutritional Tracker and gave
myself credit.
-Read my “It’s Not Okay” and “Get Back on Track” response cards and gave myself credit
- Worked toward accepting what I have to do to lose weight
-Prepared for weigh-in.

I know I've eaten and exercised well this week. I've been honest in my food logging. No matter what the scale says today I'm good.

Day 28 - Get Ready to Weigh In

Easy day for me... I pretty much weigh daily so I have a good idea where I will be tomorrow. This has been a good week for me and I'm pleased with results. Tracking my nutrition and fitness has made all the difference. For some crazy reason, I tend to stay away from the BLT's (Bites, Licks and Tastes) if I have to write it down.

Update: Keeping a weekly weight graph has also been helpful and I find the visual of seeing the line go down motivating. I also like keeping the "box loss" page in my bullet journal. Coloring in a box for every pound lost motivates me to keep going and not regain.

Update: continuing to monitor daily and graph weekly. Also found it is important to keep a scale in the RV so I can continue to weigh daily when we are on the road.

I have made "some" peace with the scale. It is one tool in this healthy journey. I know how I have behaved during the week before I ever step on the @#$%! thang.

Lost 0.8 lbs this week and I'm grateful!!! emoticon Lost 0.6 lbs emoticon last week, still grateful!! emoticon . I hate having to weigh myself since that makes me overeat when i go up in weight on the scale. I'm close to goal so if I maintain or lose a little it's okay. I will be getting ready to weigh in on Sunday rather than tomorrow. I last weighed myself on March 13th. I have been away from home for nearly three weeks and will be driving home Friday and Saturday. I am preparing myself for whatever the scale shows. I have stayed in my calorie range as far as I can tell but without my trusty food scale and some eye balling of portions I am not as sure of the calorie counts as I would be if I were home and doing the cooking. So the way I look at it is I've done my best under the circumstances and the scale will show what it will. I must say I am looking very forward to getting home again!

Any time spent creating is time well spent!

Day 28 - weigh-in. Disappointment - but, thankfully, I know how to handle it! emoticon I am utilizing the techniques presented to regroup, replan, adjust - and "Oh well...move on". I am going to revise my eating plan a bit. I am going to re-read some. I am going to sit down to eat (my greatest challenge by far). So glad I found the Beck Team!

Get Ready to Weigh In!

Day 28 in my book is Get Ready to Weigh-in (not that I'm a nit picker, or anything) 8-)

Lost those .2 pounds, and I hope they're going for good!

I am ready to weigh in tomorrow, and Ithink it will show .2 up or no loss. This makes me want to eat a candybar or a handful of chips or even a piece of raisi toast. I'm not going to do that. I'm not going off plan tonight, and I will stay on plan all day tomorrow.

My body initially settled into a sideways trend in December 2014. In March 2015 it became evident that I was injured. Adjusting nutritional intake accordingly has enabled me to continue maintaining. I'm going to try and share a number of graphs here. The first is from July 2013 thru the present. It is a plot of essentially weekly scale weights.

Here's a weight graph for the month of October 2016. It is from Weight Grapher an online weight smoothing application. The little green diamonds are daily scale weights. The blue line is the weighted average.

I am sorry that the images are so small. The first graph has a vertical scale running from 100 - 210 pounds. The second graph has a vertical scale running from 117 - 122 pounds. I am currently maintaining near 120 lbs.

This summer I experienced an inflammatory flare. It looked like this. The vertical scale on it runs from 118 - 128 lbs.

It feels good to have that experience receding in the rear view mirror.

I am looking forward to having a graph with months of data, like the awesome long-time maintainers on this team, and being at goal weight +/- 3 pounds. Since starting the Beck Trek, I have moved off a 6 month plateau and I will be happy with my scale weight tomorrow if it is within 3 pounds of my new low point.

I am slowly getting there, I am fine with slowly, although moving off a plateau feels awesome !!

Adding in my weigh-in info from Day 29
I started the Beck Trek at 133 and have been 134 +/- 3 pounds for the last 6 months. My first 3 Beck Trek weigh-ins 130 – 128.5 – 129.5 (Day 29) with eventual goal of weighing 122 at 5’4”. I am thrilled to be in the 120s. If I finish this trek edging a few more pounds down from 128.5 and I don’t go over 130, I will be very very happy.

Weigh ins are an important part of the process, because it is not easy to look at the number of the scale as dr. Beck suggests: a data point.
That innocent number can raise so much doubt and self judgement, undermining all the good work we have done.
In my case, Day 15 was 59.5 kg, Day 21 was 59.4 kg and now Day 28 was 59.1 kg - a very small downward trend, but weight fluctuated a lot. So it is still too early to tell if I have lost any weight - I want to be below my goal at least half the time, like I was before July.

Compare this to my first reading of Beck Jan-Feb 2015: then I started to lose quickly as soon as I started to Eat Sitting Down. Before that time I did a lot of eating standing up and unnoticed, about 400 calories per day, so correcting this mistake had a large effect.

Now I was doing quite well before this October 2016 reboot started, and only had to make minor corrections, so I shouldn't expect big changes in my weight either.
But still, I felt the beneficial effect of preparation to weigh in, as I told myself "I'm making progress, I'm following my plan and practicing my skills, whatever the scale shows". So my disappointment was minor and fleeting and I feel motivated to continue.

After being stuck on Day 27 for 2 weeks, I've moved on to Day 28. Today was weigh-in day again and before I got on the scale, I reminded myself about how good I feel. That my digestive system is working better. I am sleeping thru the night (now that my body isn't working furiously all night dealing with the big binges I used to have after dinner). So no matter what the scale says, I feel good and am making progress.

Once I got on the scale, I was happy to see that I was down 1.8 lbs. this week. But I am keeping my thoughts in check. I don't expect to see that kind of loss every week. Slow, steady, moderate is the game I'm playing!

As always, I'm apprehensive about weighing in. My clothes feel looser. I've lost some inches around my boobs and waist. I'm don't get as winded walking uphill. Despite what the scale says tomorrow, I will give myself credit for those 3 improvements!

I'm weighing in in 3 days at the Dr's office. Unfortunately I will not be wearing the same clothes becasue I do not remember what I wore last time. lol

But it doesn't matter. The number on the scale is just a guideline. I do hope that it indicates movement downward, but I'll be happy if it is not up.

Staying the same or going down.... means no gain. If there is a gain I will have to check my salt intake and review my meal plans.

It's just a number.

This chapter was a slap in the face - lol, "Don't even THINK about skimping on your diet today.." "starving yourself is unacceptable" ... funny thing - I hadn't eaten lunch! She was scolding me, how did she know? :) LOL I went home and ate...

I've had the excuse the past couple of days that our kitchen is out of order & I let myself off the hook from cooking dinners or preparing lunch.

When I stepped on the scale this morning, I was down 1/2 pound - YAY! emoticon okay there's my little celebration for the day. Now I hope I hold on to that or more for my weigh-in tomorrow!! ~Renee

weigh in day tomorrow- i'm rereading this again before i go, because i am NOTORIOUS for getting frustrated in the past, but i've really felt different this week. Stronger, more at peace with my body and able to focus on feeling healthier with the bonus of losing those last 10+ pounds again

starting on this--- my weight day Friday! ugh I hate the scale. But Beck said it is a tool to be used to gauge how I eat! Sounds good. It does not matter if I lost so much. I hope I did not gain. For some reason this week it has been hard not to weight. In the beginning When I first joined sp. I was leaning on the scale junkie side. That is not a problem now! emoticon

For me trying to play catch-up was always a disaster. The idea of getting back on track as soon as possible, and as often as necessary is so much easier than playing catch-up, and a lot less painful.

:::nods:::

when i've been over-eating, it is hard to face the scale, but I agree, it's best to just face it and be accountable ~ simply so we can refocus and go forward again (instead of trying to play catch-up)

I have learned to keep my expectations realistic when I weigh in. The 1/2 to 2 pound up or down is a realistic expectation, however, if I eat way off track it's harder to face the scale. I need to remind myself to let go of my ego and just be accountable... weigh in and move forward.

Exactly, Nus; that's why this program is so good because it deals with your inner demons that make you run to food or go crazy eating.

I still don't like the scale; everytime I feel skinny and think I should've lost a bunch - nothing or a gain. And when I feel puffy and fat - I lose. I just weigh now for information and that's all. I'm in this for life. I don't like eating the other way now. So this is me! YAY for that!

hey, i get this chapter! I actually am still working on getting going, so I will be starting fresh again tomorrow...

but I appreciate the comments in the book for today... in the past when my focus was dieting, i would peel off extra clothes, not drink water b4hand and like the biggest loser probably would want to exercise a whole bunch the day b4 and barely eat the day b4!!! how's that for maniac dieting??? well it was kind of like that when i was on medically supervised diets...

and for me that was part of the insanity of yo-yo dieting....

and also why i try not to set actual weight loss goals for each week but rather try to focus on the things we can do to make that happen.

What I mean is results/action oriented goals which we can do and control versus result goals which we can't control like when the body decides to retain and gain water weight wk 4 of our ladies' cycle!

one time i had not eaten a bite off plan for over 3 weeks and was waiting to weigh and have a big surprise! Big surprise all right! 0 loss! not 1 single lb! I was so devastated i gave up and started eating right then.

It took me several hours to realize i was in week 4 of my cycle and normally would have gained 5 - 10 lbs, so really I had lost weight, it just wasn't showing on the scale.

too late... that binge lasted almost 2 weeks b4 i could get it together to *diet* again... that was b4 i decided no more diets and to work on creating a real lifestyle (way to eat & exercise) that I could do, want to do and even enjoy the rest of my life.

i still struggle not to slip back into the insaniac crazy things i would do when dieting...

~ which reminds me of our sabotaging thoughts... i think this is something we will need to deal with the rest of our lives... not just with how we eat but all the other areas in our lives as well...

Quoting Dr. Beck:

"Once I learn to use the scale as information to guide my efforts, dieting will be easier."

I'm making response cards as described by Dr. Beck in this chapter. I want to be prepared to respond to any sabotaging thoughts triggered by weight loss/weight gain.

My next weigh-in is Monday.

I prepared a Response to The Scale card, and a Response to Weight Gain card.

For me... I'm aware that the scale and my reaction to the information has and could sabotage my weight loss efforts... so just in case I'm prepared with my Response Cards. LOL... I'm learning to make friends with The Scale and use it as an information tool to guide my eating plan!

Hi,
I repeat over and over. The scale is just a tool I need to use to get my weight down so I can be more healthy. I have to weigh myself each week so I will now how i am doing and if I need to make any changes. I have been pretty excited about weighing but I keep in mind that I tend to lose slowly.

What are you thinking as you approach the scale? Are you prepared to evaluate your eating habits if the scale has gone the wrong way?

We talked last week about being a scaleaholic or being afraid to weigh. I can weigh without a problem now, pretty much. I have to remind myself that my ultimate goal is not just losing weight but feeling healthy. So as long as I know I've been eating well and I feel healthy -- I'm still successful!
