Meals - I should be OK with. I try to put this into practice anyway. The mindless snacking (and in front of the TV too emoticon ) is definitely what I will have to pay attention to.

eating mindfully and eating slowly will go hand in hand. Keep practicing. Making special cards. But I have to be careful. I resist reading cards at first. I'll try not to make so many cards this time. Only made them when necessary. It sure is funny how you read something one time and find something new you never saw before.

Today I'm reviewing Day 5: Eat Slowly and Mindfully

This is still an easy step for me because I truly enjoy the eating experience. I have always eaten slowly but now I also eat mindfully. I am learning to really pay attention to what I'm eating, and I can say that I'm aware of the taste and texture of most mouthfuls.

It's easier for me to practice this behavior when I am eating a meal alone. When I'm eating with other people I need to remind myself to pay attention to what I'm eating and how much I eating as well as being aware of the taste of my food bite by bite.

I think this is a hard one for our society. we are not taught to slow down and simply be. It is very hard for me, even if my four boys are leaving me alone, to just eat. I really want to do several tasks at once or I feel like I'm not making good use of my time.

This is still not something I am doing consistently. My food plan is going well so I am not thinking about it much--but this is my back up plan. If I start having even little problems staying on track, I start doing this for every bite I eat. I know this works.

this is one I have a hard time with. My husband (who I eat many meals with) is a SUPER fast eater. Also, I tend to eat either at my desk in front of the computer, or in front of the tv. Mindless eating. I think I am going to wind up staying on this day for more than 24 hours.

I come from a big family and have a big family--5 kids. Anyway, I think I was trained early that if I want food, I need to hurry up and eat or it will be gone! I really need to do some major rewiring on this one even though I like the idea

Here I am on Day 5, but I have been subconciously putting this one into action since Day 1. When I slow down and pay attention to what I am eating I feel full sooner, I really do. This is a BIG change for me, I usually wolf down my food. Being a mom of 3 and a teacher I have to eat quickly so that I can get on with whatever it is I am doing. It's hard, but I do see the benefits of this.

I think I'm going to stick with Day 5 for the weekend. I've always been a fast eater. This will help me remember this lesson well. I've already made 3 Response cards on my own!

And do you know the first thing that came to my mind when I got to Day 5? Would you believe Remy from Ratatouille. Think about it. He takes a piece of food, puts it slowly in his mouth and slowly chews. And fireworks explode in the background as he savors the flavor. As he told his brother, "Don't hork it down". I decided to get a little Remy action figure to remind me to slow down. Silly, but hey, whatever works.

This is one that I've practiced and continue to practice. It's hard sometimes, but the benefits are much better on my digestive system.

My husband was just reading a buddhist book where they discuss meditational eating. Chewing for over 50 times/bite, not reading, not speaking to anyone. Pretty extreme! They say the more you chew the easier the food is on your digestive system.

I definitely struggle with this one, being a mom to 2 young children. My only escape during a meal is to open my running magazine or a good book, otherwise I feel like I'm eating at the zoo. But I'm trying to make a point of savoring each bite so I realize I've eaten a meal, then reading in between bites. It is something that I have to work on consistently though or I fall back into the mindless patterns.

This is going OK but it is not great yet. I try to eat mindfully (consciously) and sometimes it works better than others. I do know that this one thing can significantly reduce the amount that I eat. When I really pay attention to what I am eating, I get satisfied much faster. For now I am content and will really stress this one if I hit a plateau.

I'm trying to work on mindfulness in general. Eating mindfully is really a challenge. I'm more of a grab-n-go kind of girl. I think that's been part of my issue in the past though, I don't really think about what I eat or when.

I have done this when using the conscious eating principles and it certainly helps to cut down on what I eat. Eating mindfully and checking in with myself on how I'm feeling and my satisfaction level really helps.

Otherwise I'm a shoveler who usually eats at the computer or while reading. Next thing I know I'm done and I can't remember really tasting anything.

I hate this one. I feel like eating mindfully and slowly is like making a huge deal out of eating. I'm keeping it in focus too much. Then my mind starts to wander all over the idea of food and eating. That's the opposite of what I want. I don't want to food to be on my mind so much. I want my life to be my focus. I feel like being mindful of eating is the opposite of "Eat of live"

This is also another tough habit that I need to break. I'm always the first one to finish a meal. I'm going to put the fork down and sip some water to pace myself. Also I'll try to notice other people and be the last to finish eating, not the first.

This is a hard one for me. When I was younger, up through my teens I was a very slow eater. Someone was always telling me to speed it up. I started eating faster to keep up with everyone, but now I have a hard time eating slowly. I also find that when I am trying to eat more healthy I try to get it down a little faster since I don't actually enjoy fruits or vegetables. I try to think of it like taking a medicine that you don't have to like but you have to do. Unfortunately that doesn't work so well when you are supposed to take it slow and concentrate on each bite.

This is something I have always struggled with. I ate on the run today- I ate Meal 1 in the gym locker room. I ate Meal 2 during a meeting and Meal 3 partially in the car. I am going to keep on working on this, but I know it will be very challenging for me as it always has been...which is probably why its always been so hard for me.

Oh, eating slowly is very hard for me. Starting to slow down enough to remember to focus on the TASTE, which is so much more satisfying...and trying to not do other things, like use the computer and watch T.V. which is also difficult.

The slowly part I can get if I remember to practice it.
Taste the Item, feel the texture.
Through past trails of mindful eating I found there were things that I was eating that tasted horrible, but I eat it so fast I didn't notice. ugh!

Eating slowly might help me because I notice that it takes me about 40 minutes to feel full. Dang that a long time.

This is a huge problem for me.
I don't really like eating that much...so I kind of rush through it.

In spite of the fact that I eat for comfort, I don't really enjoy it. I'm the person who always loses weight on vacation because I'm not bored and I have so much to do, I'd rather do that than eat. And since I don't know the lay of the land, food gets hard to find and I'd just as soon not bother with more than I need to make it to the next "real" activity.

So this was awful. I slowed down my usual breakfast (cereal) and found that I didn't really enjoy it at all. It just wasn't any good. But couldn't think of anything I actually would enjoy and at least it wasn't actively unpleasant. For lunch, I ordered something that turned out to be actively unpleasant - so I stopped eating it. (Which is huge for me. I have great difficulty with not continuing eating, even stuff I don't like.). And the only thing I could think of was ordering something from a rival store to show the first store....to tell the truth, the rival store's offering was probably in the same class as the cereal (I wasn't going to actually like it). But I felt like I deserved _something_.
To my credit, I didn't go running to the other store.

Dinner was more of the same. I ate it, but thinking about every bite made me realize how much I didn't really like that food either.

Where do I go from here?

Insane! and watching television, that's the hardest habit to break. ...but what i really want to do, is take smaller bites, and chew more slowly and in a more thorough way! I've had this little battle with myself, in the past...about putting my fork down, between bites! Put your fork down, Ellen - one voice says. No, I don't want to, says the other one!
...so today, I'm going to try again, especially since a couple of times recently, I got too full at the end of the meal, not realizing I ate more than I needed to! It also helps if I eat a salad to begin with. Fills me up.

I like that way of eating Deb, I will have to try eating slower and tuning out the news too.
I know I will be sitting at the table by myself but that's ok with me.

My husband likes to watch Fox News while we are eating too and that is one thing that probably won't change at our house. My plan is to do 3 simple things to slow my eating down. I do put my fork or finger foods down between bites and then when I finshed swallowing I wipe my mouth and have a swallow of water before I take the next bite. This isn't automatic yet but thinking about it takes my mind off the news cast, which isn't a bad thing, and put my focus back on my meal.

I thought this one would be easy to dy, NOT.
For one thing, DH love to watch FOX news during dinner, so I listen while I eat. I may have to set a rule of no TV while eating dinner.
I have for the most part stopped eating while on the computer, so no more mindless eating their.
Putting down the fork between bites is a great idea.

Day 5 - Here's where I am now. I call it Eating Mindfully.

I think that to start off, I'll try the old "put your fork/spoon/food down between every bite" idea.

I'm going to focus on that today. Hopefully, longer than just today, lol.

This is a tough one for me, too, but through SparkPeople I've gotten better at it. BTW, I read about the Beck Diet Solution, and decided to give it a read this week. I'm finding that it's message is very similar to the message delivered here at SP! Can't get enough of a good message, right? Anyway, Like others here, I've got the multi-tasking issues that stand in the way of Slow and Mindful Eating. For instance, during my workday lunch hour I drive to the gym, work out for 20 minutes, and drive back to the office. On the drive back is when I eat my sandwich. It takes a focused effort to chew slowly and savor each bite because I'm also driving. It helps that I use whole grain bread, so that it's very chewy and nutty. It also helps that I take very small bites because I sure as heck don't want to choke while driving (not that I'd want to choke at any other time....LOL).

Beck is a good exercise for me. It's reinforcing what I've been learning here at SP these last five months.

When I was growing up, if you didn't eat quickly you lost out on seconds! But I'm a long way away from that. Seconds? What are those??! emoticon

After a year I still try to do this, not always successfully. Dh reminds me sometimes to breath and slow down. I try to remember to put my fork or food down in between bites. The best time to practice this is when eating my little treat splurges. I can still remember the time my housemate last year made carrot cake and left some for us. I cut a very small piece for myself and gave the rest to dh, ate it so slowly and savored every morsel. YUM! It makes me satisfied with less of the sweets and fats.

The one time I don't worry too much about mindless eating is the desk lunch. During the semester I'm usually too busy to overeat on week days anyway. I bring my lunch in pre-measured portions and often eat it in front of the computer during my one hour break between classes. The purpose of those meals is to refuel my body so if I don't have time to focus just on the food, I don't worry about it too much-- in fact my main concern is getting enough into my body before break is over!

I had to eat breakfast during class but I focused on the taste and amount. Did the best I could. Lunch was better I focused on my 2/3 grilled chicken sandwich leftover with buffalo sauce and it was TASTY!

Dinner- I will remain focused. Maybe even light a candle :-D lol

Oh day 5 is today for me. This hasn't been an easy task so far today. I did good at breakfast but lunch was another story. I went to the gym during my lunch time so I had to eat while I worked when I got back. I tried to be mindful but I could have been better at paying attention to slowing down. Good thing it was healthy. I'm going to make sure I eat slowly and mindfully at dinner tonight.

This step is also going to take some training. I tend to multitask when eating, so I know that's going to have to stop. It'll be hardest at school, when my lunchtime is usually the only time I have to get my "office" work done.

I was not allowed to watch TV growing up so eating and TV are not an issue for me. Reading, however, is another story. I love to eat and read, and I know there are certain foods, like cheese, that I will gorge on. My plan is to try drinking while reading instead or making myself finish a chapter before succumbing to temptation. Other than that, I am generally the slowest eater at the table and I do take time to savor food at mealtime. It is the after-hours bingeing behaviors where I don't, but I am getting much better at controlling them.

Most people never get past their first wind to know they have a second.

I have found that eating slowly and mindfully really lets you taste the food. If it tastes really good then you actually get the satisfaction of it and won't be left feeling like you still want something, i.e. something sweet. Also it allows me to become aware of things that I thought I like but when I slow down and be mindful I find that it is really not very good after all, like the hashbrowns at Jack in the Box that I used to get almost every morning. They really don't taste that good. I think I just like the crunch. So now I rarely eat them. Also I can eat just one hersheys kiss and eat it mindfully and the one satisfies my want for desert.

Some of these principles take a little while to master. Give yourself time!

I usually try to have a salad with every meal and eat it first to help slow me down.

I was on day 5 yesterday, and I was actually really disappointed with how I did yesterday. I could have done much better, but I guess I just have to work on doing better today.

I found it hard to eat slowly when I got past that point of reasonable hunger in the afternoon, and I let myself down a bit. Today I'll have to try to space my meals better so it doesn't happen.

I have been trying to slow down but at times it is hard. I start out thinking about the food and the taste and the texture and before long I want to just gobble it up! I think I will go out and buy a fancy place mat and new place setting to help remind me that I want to experience the meal.

When I used to practice yoga, the instructor talked about that. Really being MINDFUL of every bite or taste. He based on the Buddhist belief of being mindful -- in all things in life.

I like to try to be mindful of all things, but I'm a modern person, so I have a short attention span. I could never get into "being present" with every bite, every taste in my mouth. Not for me either.

If I could just stop binge eating- that'll be so friggin' awesome.

I just got a book I haven't had time to start reading on Mindless Eating. I have to admit that whenever I looked at a book on Mindful Eating, I felt a little lost in all the things they wanted done. The idea of eating a raisin and contemplating the taste and feel of a raisin just didn't sound like me. But,the book I got helps with understanding why we eat more than we think we eat. Hmmmm, that's me!

This can be difficult. I eat slowly easily, but the mindfully part is very important too. Being mindful of what you are eating and how much really opens my eyes to what I am doing - either eating healthy, on a binge, or making thinking mistakes (like "I deserve this" or "It's ok for me to eat this").

This one is so tough for me. I have been actually trying it all week, although officially yesterday was the day on the programme. I can't wait to finish eating so I can get back on with other stuff. The other day I just didn't bother to eat because I didn't want the interruption of sitting down and eating. I notice sometimes I just stuff a big chunk of food in my mouth. I have had to stop myself loading my fork while I am chewing.

This is tough for me since I find that I do not even pay attention to what I am eating. Hmmm Concentrate on what I am eating, chew slowly and eat smaller portions. I guess my fork is not a shovel and I should practice some good table manners here.

Day 5. Eat Slowly and Mindfully
The Beck Diet Solution reminds us that it takes up to 20 minutes for the brain to get the message from the stomach that it's full. In addition to slowing down, she recommends concentrating on what you are eating in order to increase satisfaction from smaller portions. In the long run she feels it's unrealistic to eat without distractions (her patients never stick to it) but she suggests practicing without distractions at first to learn how to eat mindfully even if you're distracted.

This is another hard day for me. I eat mindlessly all the time!!! Lillian, your post was so funny about counting out, eating and enjoying your Girl Scout cookies. Maybe that is the way to start is to eat mindfully, no matter what it is, junk or healthy food. This is one I will always struggle with also.
