I don't have an actual designated (singular person) coach, have never felt comfortable with a designated person. I have multiple trusted people here on Spark that help me with issues that arise, as well as some very close friends who are solid advice. As I work on my personal trainer certification I realize the importance of someone that can deal with the very personal issues that arise. I do feel that you need a support system and encourage people to develop one.

My coaches are: my instructor and group in my WW weekly meeting. I was and is vital to my weight goal success.

Every day I am on the verge of making slight changes that would make all the difference in my life.

One day I won't be able to do this, but today is not that day

I know it is not typical to ask your husband to be your coach. I have used him before and critiqued him on being too "whatever" .. giving me not the reaction I needed at the time, but slowly and surely he become the perfect coach to me. Saying what I need to hear, practical and realistic, without too much of a food police officer mentality. He came up with the phrase for me "Stick with the plan". It worked. Amazingly. Every time I get tempted, my husband and my family come to the forefront of my mind, and I can push it away saying those words.

It is never too late to become who you always wanted to be.

I am still using Sparkpeople as my Diet Coach and Support. I log on daily and log. I post to the community feed and also blog. I visit the BDS group almost daily.
My sons are really into health and nutrition and offer insight too.

what I am going to look for this time around is someone to do physical things with as that is part of my "diet" lifestyle I am lacking on. I need to exercise.

I am a maker of things ... I make natural handmade soaps/body care, toxin free nail polish & botanical perfumes ... And a fiber artist who weaves textiles & spins yarn obsessively. Pack leader to 6 dogs, 1 cat & an assortment of humans.

Hi Team,
today's task is finding a diet coach (real life or online),
and to report on our progress (successes, struggles and weight) at least weekly.
The diet coach doesn't need to have any special skills.
"... choose someone who is positive, good at problem solving, and truly motivating, and proud of you"
"You want a diet coach who helps you identify and counter your unhelpful thinking, gives practical advice, is highly motivating and is willing to help you implement your program"

We team members are lucky, because we already have the support of this team (and the entire SP community) as a "collective diet coach", but it is beneficial to have a personal diet coach as well.

Please share your thoughts on the Day 6 thread (click blue hyperlink below)

Day 6 To Do List:
__ I read my Advantages Response Card at least twice
__ I read other Response Cards as needed
__ I ate slowly, sitting down, noticing every bite
Every time / Most of the time / Some of the time
__ I gave myself credit when I engaged in helpful dieting behaviors
Every time / Most of the time / Some of the time
__ I decided on a diet coach or support group

My support comes from my SP accountability buddy. We have been each others coach/buddy for about 8 years. We usually correspond 1 or 2 times per week to encourage each other. Also, DH is pretty good at listening and offering positive support.

In the past I couldn't think of anyone who I'd be comfortable asking to be my diet coach. It's interesting . I do feel differently about this now - more comfortable with the thought of asking someone. Maybe I've talked to enough people about my challenges with food, and more comfortable with the goals that I have for myself. I'm still going to sit with this for a little while. I still don't feel quite ready.

This turtle is to remind myself that slow but steady wins the race.

This is my 2nd attempt at the Beck Pink book. When I started the programme last year, I asked my husband to be my diet coach, but that didn't work out well, partly because he has never had a weight problem so doesn't really understand, and partly because he's part of the problem. He tried, but it just didn't work out.

This time, I've gone to the section on "find a diet coach", and after reading a number of Spark pages, I've written to someone asking if she is willing to partner with me.

Fingers crossed, I will keep you posted.

I actually chose my diet coach several weeks ago, and she's the one who led me to this group! I wish I could say I've utilized her well; I've certainly had some major slip-ups in the past month probably because I didn't know how to stop some deeply-lain habit trails. I'm not new to losing weight (though I'm new to Beck) so I'm not exactly sure what I need from her or how to best approach her. I've been periodically sending her screenshots of my food diary and I'm keeping her up to date with my weigh-ins and general outlook. More recently my coach introduced me to an apple cider vinegar mocktail that HAS really helped me (seems to curb my appetite and take away my urge to binge late at night) and I pray that I am able to remain consistent with my efforts.

This wasn't an easy task for me to do, especially when I first read this chapter last year.

First, I was afraid of imposing myself on others and robbing them of their time for doing something that I should be able to do on my own. Second, I was( and still am) very self-concious of what other people might think of me, so I was/am quite afraid to quit this program and very embarassed to share slip ups.

I am working toward a more relaxed version of myself, and I'm taking this opportunity of having a diet coach to improve also as a person and being less concerned about failure: I want to celebrate the fact that I read this book for 6 days, instead of worrying that in the next 36 or so I might stop reading it..

I am willing to be a Beck buddy/accountability partner. I am experienced at Beck coaching, but definitely don't claim to have all the answers!! I prefer to work with someone who commits to daily or almost daily contact. That has consistently worked out better for me and the people I support!

I would be happy to partner with someone on this Trek that is looking for a diet coach or accountability buddy.

I have had some wonderful coaches on my first treks and coached or buddied up on the last few treks.

Let me know, send me a goodie and message on my spark page.

Sparkpeople has been great for talking about struggles and successes. But it isn't inmate enough unless I am intentional about sharing what is really going on. I am on a team and have been on that team for a year and half that offers me encouragement and accountability. I can share openly have how I am really doing. While it isn't face to face, I am very thankful for these friends.

emoticon emoticon emoticon Best thing ever was finding people online who are here trying and willing to talk about it, in supportive, encouraging ways :)

I've had a gazillion people in the real world want to fix me or be the food police ~ and impose all sorts of arbitrary eating rules... it triggers me to rebellion...

so for me, go at my pace, come visit online has been the most helpful, ever...

emoticon what surprised me is how we can all connect emoticon
~ from our own 'puters & phones & devices ~ from around the world, different times of day ~ and in the encounters, develop real friendships, as if we were sharing life over a cuppa coffee... or yammering together at a quilting bee... it's been like that for me and it has helped in a profound way ~ I don't feel alone in this journey anymore... and am so glad we're doing this study together ~ I have read all the posts and they have sparked and encouraged me, from all the perspectives! Thank you :)

Here on Sparkpeople - Lifechangz is my best coaching buddy and "go to" for good information and motivation. I am lucky to have 2 daughters who have both lost a lot of weight recently and that is about all we talk about - sometimes for hours. So they definitely are my offline coach buddies.

Honestly there are so many places to find inspiration and help nowadays with the online community. Here on Sparkpeople we have many people with infinite wisdom. And for accountability I really rely on myself. If I can't be accountable to myself, then I don't think anybody else could hold me accountable. I have a system in place that is really working for me now and happy with the results I am getting.

I agree, this is one of the hardest tasks. Plus, I'm not the type of person who initiates communications.
I will use this group as collective coach and will try to find a therapist that specializes in CWLT.

Depending on someone for this is hard. It is reaching out and making someone my counselor. So I turned to my husband. He is not perfect, but he is willing. I will have to train him to be motivational, encouraging and understanding how this program works.. but he is really practical and his will power is incredible! He doesn't alter his meals and he is consistent. He teases me about already telling him every detail of my day … so he is hired.

And I will be very truthful with him and accountability to him will be enough to turn from that cookie and lying to him is not an option.

Honestly, I think the Find a Diet Coach task is one of the hardest in the entire process. Like many in this group, I've opted for the BDS community here. My goal was/is not to drop massive poundage, but to clean up my eating and to use the CBT techniques in the book in other areas of my life. So I feel a little like I don't fit the mold.

My attempts (though admittedly soft) to find a coach IRL met with actual scoffs. And while my family *says* they support me by their words, their actions show otherwise. Not that they're against my efforts, they just don't understand what I'm doing.

So, it's y'all for me and me for y'all. We can do this together!!

I like using SP as the collective (hm, Star Trek anyone? emoticon ), but also need some one-on-one time with someone who understands. Unfortunately, as an introvert I'm never gonna ask. I turned to my husband, and while he has some faults--we'll see in Chapter 7--I know what I need, so I set up some ground rules. The bonus is that he's really trying to get back in shape for extending hikes in the wilderness, so he's more than willing to ask of himself and me if we really need to eat ________. Fill in the blank with whatever sugary, fatty item. Plus, he is most excellent at problem-solving.

Hi Team,
today's task is finding a diet coach (real life or online),
and to report on our progress (successes, struggles and weight) at least weekly.

Please share your thoughts here!

Ugh, so this one is so tough. I'm a very private person. I know that I have so much shame connected to my weight. Everyone bragged on me so much when I lost over 100 pounds a few years ago. Its hard to tell people- whelp I've gained some of it back and I'm struggling! I am really hoping to use this community as my diet coach!

Hi Barb, so funny about the donut dust : ))
From your post on the Arrange Environment message board, sounds like your husband respects your goals and supports you in eating in a more healthful way - who knows, may be a good diet coach after all!
Blogging or posting on message boards may be sufficient, as you get feedback and support from us If you decide you want a personal diet coach, you can always ask someone in the team if you like.

Hum. Finding a Diet Coach is difficult. There I said it, lol. I have SP for starters, but I probably need something one-on-one. Maybe my husband? He'd be totally supportive in his fashion, but I'm not sure I can take advice to stay strong from a man with donut dust on his lips. Hum. How about I come back to this one later??

Still working out who will be my buddy. I am active on the BLC team I'm on and can post there for support and get help if I need it. In real life I've had problems finding a coach. A friend and I tried to help each other at the beginning of the year but it was difficult because she tended to be negative and have a "reason" why she "couldn't" get on track. That became tiresome for me and she wasn't equipped to give me the support I needed and would even suggest going out to eat to talk about how difficult it was. So, wrong person!

I might ask my DH. He;s a tough one, though, and will remind of the reasons why I don't really want to stray from my plan. emoticon He;s probably a good one. I will also post on the other thread on this team about buddies.

My support system is made up of my partner, the McDougall forum (the place to talk about the diet I follow) and my SparkTeams, of course including this one. I'm not very social in person, but luckily, I live with the most supportive person ever.

Thank you for sharing diet coach / diet buddy arrangements,
it is nice to see so many great solutions!

Rachel and Mary, yay for posting your starting weigh-ins!
I believe a few weeks from now you will be proud of your progress,
and happy to have a well-documented starting point.
In case anyone wants to join, here is the weigh-in thread:

Note: while it is helpful to post starting weight, especially if one is reluctant to do so ; )
of course it is not mandatory!
If someone is uncomfortable to do that, even with their own diet coach,
it is OK to share only the change (how much the scale went up or down).

We will read more about preparing for weigh-in on day 21 - until then, try not to worry about actual weight, it is progress that matters.

Maintenance Lessons Learned:
-go on with the healthy lifestyle learned in weight loss phase
-just add healthy foods gradually to stop losing
-work out every day - 30-60 minutes is enough to maintain weight and good mood
-do not try to balance overeating by extreme workouts, it is not going to work
-avoid overeating, instead of satisfaction you get stronger cravings

Gail agreed to be my diet coach some time back (the first time I started Beck), we have been e-mailing and communicating weekly. Plus I use Spark, and a few trusted friends.

Double Ugh

So this is a start!
Do you want to take Saturday as the weigh in day?
We can post the weight on the daily or on the weigh in thread. The advantage of the weight in thread is that the weekly result will be easier to spot. He he he.

But I am horrified too. But I am courageous!

Mary: you got me!!!!!so funny!!!! I too want to stick with the Beck team. My proposition is to either post on the daily thread, or if I am not alone with this- and I am so glad you think it is a good idea-, to post weekly on the thread you have mentioned: "Keeping track of our progress forum".
I just notice that my choice of words (team instead of thread) was misleading. Sorry...

Seriouslim I "think" the idea of posting weigh in is dreadful awful and horrifying. Which of course means I must do it! Brilliant idea. Once I got over my terror. I am not exactly clear about where you plan to execute this. Do you mean the thread on the Beck Team, "Keeping Track of Our Progress Forum, Weigh-ins

I have had a wonderful coach for 2 years. It has been a great experience, and I consider her a real friend.

At this point of my journey, the Beck Sparkies are very helpful, supportive and inspirational and are my coach.

What I hope will help with my motivation is to pledge to report weekly , on the daily thread, about the progress in my weight loss journey. I have been stressed by numerous (thankfully relatively minor) health problems, but surgery is still in the future, as well as dental procedures and the biggie: retirement at the end of this month. As a result of this stress i have regained 6 lb in a year and tend to forget about my health and healthy goals. It is easy to fool myself because i still have a lot of acquired healthy behaviours. But the bottom line is revealing: if i gain weight it is because my use of food is not wise.

The weigh in thread is not very active, this is why i would prefer the daily thread, unless some of us decide to use it as a additional motivating tool, which would be great. In that case, I would post my progress there.

What do you think, Sparkies?

My older brother is my coach. He is great. Very encouraging and supportive, gives good advice, he helps me put things in perspective. When he sees an email or text from me that starts with "Hi Coach!" he knows I'm reporting to him. I've explained the Beck principles and techniques to him, so he understands this is about changing my thinking and habits and will take some time.

My 2 brothers and I are in a weekday fitbit challenge every week and are very competitive, it's fun and motivating. I can't make excuses...they don't accept excuses.

Day 6 finding a diet coach. I have found it so helpful having one. Keeps me focused and accountable. I have my diet coach in place.

My support comes from my SP accountability buddy. We have been each others coach/buddy for about 7 years. We both reached maintenance during this time.

We email each other one or two times per week to encourage and support each other in our maintenance/weight loss goals. I can write to her and she endures my sometimes "over the top enthusiasm" while at home poor DH's eyes have long glazed over from hearing this ...again. lol

This mutual support and friendship have added a whole new dimension to my weight loss journey. I feel lucky and blessed to have such a great coach and accountability buddy.

Mary, that's a very good point, using irritation as a compass.
I'll remember that, in other areas of life too!

So hard to ask for help. But it is true for me that being accountable makes a real difference. So I will do it in the way Beck suggests. It is easier for me to skip the less agreeable chapters. Or fudge them. In past Beck group readings when I have found myself particularly irritated by my coach it turned out that the particular chapter and coaching advice happened to be the hardest for me to learn. It was a clue for me that I needed to pay attention. I came to realize that for me interaction with another thinking, experienced, successful human being was a more enriching experience. I got better results.

Spark motto "Learn how to be your own best coach and stay motivated."
SP main Support - 6.10.07 emoticon (very active last 5 years)
- I found SP during college and didn’t have time. January 2014, I joined WW and started tracking online. I was on Sarks daily: coaching and motivation program, team challenges, articles and high score a few times. Down 40+ and kept-off over a year. Regained 40+ during 4-month break from Sparks.

Went back to what worked in the past: WW and Sparks Jan. 2016. DH is on board with buying the same food and we cook together. I haven’t been to WW since Summer of 2016 and may join again in 2019. I’m curious about the new focus on wellness and our WW group is fun!

My support system is the Spark team. I've had coaches/buddies on and off and it has been helpful. I've been posting on the Beck Daily Check In thread and the support and suggestions from Kriszta, Susan, Christi, Trina and Rachel has been wonderful. I will continue to do that, and offer support to them, as well.

Hi Team,
today's task is finding a diet coach (real life or online),
and to report on our progress (successes, struggles and weight) at least weekly.

Please share your thoughts with us!

If there is no available /suitable person in Real Life, you may try to pair up with someone in this challenge, or other experienced member in the team.
