Hi Beth,
I'm trying to give up dairy too. Meat just grosses me out. I worked for a company that made milk test kits and learned what goes in to obtaining dairy products and in my opinion, that's the cruelest food of all. I LOVE dairy so this is going to be a challenge but I think it's the right thing. I may not be able to do the vegan thing 100% but I have to try.

I'm not a vegetarian or a vegan but I'm working towards that. I eat very little meat because it just tastes like blood to me and the thought of it is so gross - gnawing on dead animal flesh - yuk.
Of all the animal products people eat, dairy will be the biggest challenge for me. I love dairy products but when I think about what it takes to produce them, I just can't justify it. There is no way to obtain milk that isn't cruel.
I can substitute soy or almond milk for a lot of things but I don't think anything can be a substitute for cheese...

My name is Jessica. I am a 31 year old mom and wife. I've been vegetarian before but was gaining weight, I didn't track my food well and decided to stop. That was about 2 years ago. I decided to get back to it. Today was the kick off of a Vegan lifestyle. I am already dairy free due to a pretty severe milk allergy so I have been dairy free since February 2012 and don't miss that at all. The last two things to remove (eggs and meat) really are quite easy for me to do without. So with a push from a friend and watching the newest heart breaking movie "Earthlings" http://earthlings.com/ I decided to go ahead and do it! Today was day one and I'm loving it already. My entire family are Omnivores so I'm odd ball out but that's ok. :) I like being special ;) lol I'm excited about this new life developement. I have to be careful with my carbs as I'm also Insulin resistant but I am on meds for that as well.

Hello I'm April I've been on Spark for a while and I recently, watched a movie a friend of mine suggested Forks over Knives and I'm now traumatized so that's what brought me here!! I used to be a vegetarian a few years back and found myself eating mostly junk food. So I stopped in efforts to lose weight and ended up gaining even more!!! So now that I've chosen a new lifestyle I hope I can get my body and health under control and in return lose weight and look good! I hope to make some new friends here too!!! emoticon

Hi. I look forward to getting to know you all better. I was a Vegan from August 2010 until yesterday when I decided that being a Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian might be better for me. I was feeling sluggish all the time for the past few months. Anyways, I just re-joined Spark yesterday as well in hopes of losing a bit of weight in the new year, but also to track my vitamin and mineral intake.

Hi I am Mary Sunshine from MT and look forward to meeting all of you. I have celiac sprue and no one in the doctor world is helping me in this regard. In January after my check I am starting the path of gluten free and veg/vegan lifestyles. I know I have lots to learn but I am not taking more meds and am tapering off the ones I am on.

I feel that food and support, plus starting to exercise will assist my very much. I have my 34 year old daughter, and her 11 year old and 13 year old living with me in a small apartment. Hopefully she will be put back on SSI and medicaid. This way we can move to a town better suited to white/black children, and lots of healthy people!

Have a great new year now on the 1st the game will be afoot. emoticon

Wow, Hi new folks!

I agree that SP's vegetarian menus are boring. The nutrition tracker really helped me identify what I was doing wrong with my very interesting & tasty veg'n choices. :D

Hi all! I just joined SP today (just heard about it today, as a matter of fact) and was curious. Imagine my horror when I decided to let SP suggest a menu for me, and the vegetarian menu was, well, boring to say the least. I've been a vegetarian for most of my life and I can't remember a time when I had to drink an entire 8 oz glass of milk to meet my protein requirements for the day! Ugh!

(I'm also not impressed with the fact that the goal setting didn't take into account nothing more than my height and current weight -- and then promptly told me I couldn't set a lower goal weight to start off with but I could adjust it later on? Really?)

I find it amusing that many people think vegetarians should just be thin by default. But eating healthy as a veg'n is just as important as eating healthy as a meat eater. You still have to watch your fats and sugars and carbs, yes?

I plan to drop the remaining lbs that I've had problems with after I quit smoking. I guess I'm uber healthy now, but those "el bees" are a bit of a pain. While I don't make resolutions for the New Year, I am determined to get back to where I was before I quit that bad old habit!

And I guess I'll be tracking using my own recipes! LOL!

Well I joined Sparkspeople today but plan to start the new year with a 6 week program to get started on my weight loss journey. I have a terrible time starting my vegetarian/vegan diet because my husband is a huge meat eater and loves fast food. This is going to be a challenge for both of us even if he does not know it. This is for a healthier/happier New Year and new me.

Hi guys! I am actually going vegetarian in January to sort of purge my system of the holiday eating I just completed. I've done it before and saw pretty great results and I do recall feeling a lot lighter, more energetic, and happier after doing it. I unfortunately fell back into fast food, high portion control, and junk food and gained those results back and then some. I have been playing around with the idea of going vegetarian for the long term, but as a raised meat eater, that is not going to be easy for me. If anyone has any advice I would love to hear it, I need all the help I can get with this! :)

Hi JUDYSLIST,

I too have been vegetarian most of my life... about 39 years now. As I would always remind people when they asked why I'm counting calories if I'm a vegetarian: chocolate candy, brownies, and other sweets are vegetarian!

One of the biggest eye openers for me when I started using the nutrition tracker was to see that I was taking in way too much in fats. Every single fat was a healthy, appropriate fat, they just added up to too high a percentage of my calories! I'm sure if you use the tracker, that you, too will figure out the little tweaks and changes you need to get back on track. :D

hi everyone! Happy holidays!
I have been veg most of my life. My mom use to force me to ingest meat as a child and it made me VOMIT. I think she gave up after a while thinking it was useless...lol I never had a weight problem until recently. The past 10 years have been a huge change for me. I am very busy and found my healthy eating habits slide to the wayside! I lived on carbs and chocolate and forgot completely how to eat.
I am excited to find this website and find it is geared to veggies!! great recipes so far. and...now a team with common goals. wow...cant wait
here is to an amazing new year!

No animal needs to die in order for me to live & I feel good about that.

I'm Beth, 43, living in northern virginia. I'm an animal lover - actually I love all creatures great & small & I work full-time as a professional pet sitter & dog walker, which I've been doing for 25 years.

My family & friends eat meat & doesn't see it as murder. I don't push my beliefs on anyone but I am honest if someone asks me. I have seen & read too much reality of those poor animals on farms & it breaks my heart. I dream of a time when no more violence happens to them & for people to realize what they're doing. I've been wanting to be a vegetarian since I was a teenager. I'm finally doing this - for the past 2 months but still ate eggs & milk. Now I'm going to quit that too & attempt to be a vegan. I have no one to talk to or get advice from for my drastic lifestyle change. So far, I am not ill so I must be getting enough vitamins. As a side benefit, I am losing weight.

Don't let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.

I may not be there yet but I am closer than I was yesterday.

Hi! I'm Charlene, a 73 year old wife, mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother, looking to learning from what appears to be savy team membersI I truly believe, in my case and not to push my beliefs off on others, that vegan is the way to go. I have had a long road coming to this decision, but I am excited to think this old dog can learn knew tricks. In fact the older I get the more I know I don't know.

I am Dotti and do vegan about twice a week. Would love to do more. Have different pots and pans as I have 3 huge meat-eaters in my home. I don't want much to do with bloody meats any more. Even to the point of insisting they cook their own. I like raw veggies and fruits or as close to that as I can get. Took huge pan of green beans to homeless feed last night...they never serve enough fresh or lightly steamed veggies. Will make a big bowl of Salad next week for them.

Hi fellow Sparkers: My name is Pat (Self_respect) and I've been a Spark member for close to 3 years. I've made the decision to go Vegetarian and work my way into Veganism. My son and his wife are Vegans and I my oldest daughter is a vegetarian. After cooking for all different "interest" for family dinners and holidays, I've read too much to ignore the fact that I'd be more comfortable with my soul if I eat a more "friendly/kind" diet. I'm starting a vegetarian 30-day challenge beginning January 1st and will work my way to being a Vegan.

I am SO excited to have found this team and look forward to sharing some thoughts, strategies, recipes, etc. with all of you.

Enjoy the holiday season; be well, Pat

Hey Bethany,
I found some good recipes on peta.org, and on veganmiss (I think). I also ran across some great recipes just using google search, just type in your favorite recipe plus vegan you'll probably find it.

Hello Anda!
I love cheese as well, the good news is they have some really good "cheese" that is vegan. Check out peta.org for a list of brands that have dairy free foods :-)

Hello!
I'm Brandy, and I'm transitioning to being a vegan. I have struggled with my weight my whole life, and started to become vegan and immediately felt great, and ten pounds melted off in less than two weeks. This is the best choice I've made, but I'm getting in a little rut. Is there a vegan meal plan on sparkpeople so I can use their shopping list?

Hi everyone! I'm new here, so I'll give you a little background about me. I am a recent university graduate and a new mom. I finished my Honours degree in Indigenous Studies and Business Administration this past May and I am now working full time as an office manager for a snack foods distribution company. My husband is a full time student in his professional year of teaching and he works part time. My daughter is 18 months old. both she and my husband are vegan and I'm... well... vegan-ish. I use eat eggs and I don't consume milk or yogurt, although I sometimes enjoy artisan cheeses.
My biggest challenges have been finding time to THINK about exercising. I know there are lots of tricks (doing squats while emptying dishwasher, etc) but my biggest problem is that I am so overwhelmingly busy at all times that I forget to do these things.
Another challenge for me is finding nutrition programs that suit mine and my family's dietary needs. For example, the Spark nutrition tracker suggests that I should get way more calories from protein and way less from carbohydrates than is realistic for me because my best sources of protein (beans and whole grains) are also very high in carbohydrates.
Looking for some veggie mom support out there!

Hi everyone!
My name is Karri, I'm starting out as a pescetarian for 6 months and hoping to make it more permanent or transition to vegetarian. (I didn't see a team for pescetarian). I completed a month of no meat before Thanksgiving and then let myself have a break, now I'm back on track :) I used to do 6 months of vegetarianism when I was in shape, just to lose 5 or 10 pounds and to feel better. I'd always feel great while doing this.
I'm also quitting a lot of other things, but slowly so that I don't feel deprived. Today is my last day of soda's emoticon and I'm slowly cutting out most sugar - I feel better when I don't eat much sugar.

Hi. I am Anda and I have been a vegetarian since July 12, 2012. I am trying to transition to veganism. I am cutting the milk first since I was drinking a gallon of the stuff in less than a week! I have been a regular cheese snacker forever, so I don't know how I am going to let that go.
I have already seen and improvement in my health since I went veg. I have been researching food ingredients and I am surprised to find hidden "meat" in so many foods. I hope to learn more on SP.

Hello everyone!

My name is Bethany. I have been researching the idea of becoming a vegetarian and would like to give it a try. However, I am having a difficult time finding recipes & ways to be successful as a newbie. Does anyone have a website or book to recommend? Or even have any recommendations of your own that will help me in this transition?

I did SP a few years ago, but got too busy with work/family to continue.
Still busy with work & family, but now have 1 kid a college grad & gainfully employed (& in his own apt!) & 2nd kid in college and living on campus, only 1 at home, a jr. in hs.
Husband & I stopped eating meat two years ago this month. We still eat some dairy & eggs, but are leaning away from them more & more.
I lost 15 pounds within two months when I first went plant-based, and have maintained that until last month.
Not sure why I gained weight, except that I was sick for awhile (bronchitis, sinus & ear infections), I did not have a lot of appetite while sick, and nothing tasted good, so I just ate whatever to put some kind of fuel in my body.
Then the antibiotics (Z-pak) I was put on made me very ill (digestively) & I've been taking probiotics trying to restore balance to my intestinal system. Doing much better on both fronts.
I need to lose somewhere in the 20-30 pound range.
Looking to connectwith others who are seeking a plant based path of eating & being healthy for themselves and the planet.

Tina

Good Morning,
I just joined yesterday, yes Thanksgiving, I have been a plant based on and off of 20 years.. I recently started the Eat to Live Holiday Challenge. ETL is a low fat mostly vegetables vegan food plan. I am focused on creating healthy habits before the end of the year. Want to face the New Year with my best self and my habits already established..

I have in the past been a junk food veggie, now I am focusing on whole un processed food. Learning to cook healthy meals but I am still not consistent so I thought some support would help me stay on track...

Thanks for reading, look forward to the jounery together.

Hi Yall,
I have been an off and on vegan since 1995. This particular trip thru the world of veganism is on it's 474th day. The program I used and am back on is The Hallelujah Acres Aggressive Recovery Diet.
This time is the second time that I have used it to try to build my immune system to a point that disease in the body will heal itself..Over the last few years, I have come to believe that no animal should be harmed in any way for ME, Personally To be able to obtain food..I doubt seriously that I'll ever eat meat again.
I'm still over weight, but the good thing is that once I started back with my walking regimen and have gotten where I'm getting in any where from 2.5 to 4.5 miles a day, the weight has started dropping again..
Last November, I became a Hallelujah Acres Health Minister and am willing to share any thing you need or want to know about the lifestyle and I am studying raw food prepping and cheffing...God Bless All of YOU on YOUR Journey to good health or what ever it is that you seek...( Have been in involved with Spark People for a year and a half , but just started back posting in last month or so...)

Hi all! My name is Leah. I'm a home educating mum from the Netherlands, writer, obedient slave to three gorgeous cats, and new to SP.

Mobility impaired, and looking for ways to get my body moving again (I hate sitting on my lazy bum all day!) I found Coach Nicole's videos on YouTube. From there, I found my way to SP, and here I am.

I've been a vegetarian for most of my adult life, and leaning towards veganism, but not willing to give up on diary and eggs altogether. Thankfully, I don't need to lose any weight. I simply joined this group because I love good food and enjoy experimenting in my kitchen.

Hello!

My name is Wendy. I am 61 years of age. ( seeing that in writing is sobering!). I have been aiming towards a vegan lifestyle for many months. I am almost there. I am concerned, though, as I have not lost weight. That in itself, eas my reason for committing to Sparkpeople. I am glad that I found this group!

Hi Everyone. I've been on and off a Vegan diet for about 5 yrs or more now. I have a serious addiction to sugar, and believe it or not, when I start down the sugar path, I end up right back on meat. All or nothing thinking, I know. I've decided to switch back to a Vegan diet for good now, for health reasons primarily; but really, I don't enjoy eating meat, never have. It's pretty ridiculous that I still do.

Anyway, I'm almost 42, and my health is at its worst. I'm 50lbs overweight, and 100% TIRED of being sick and tired. So, I'm on a Vegan diet for good, and hope to learn to eat as healthfully as possible from everyone here. I'm also off of Refined sugars (it's been 2 weeks now), and I'm determined never to go back to sugar and dairy (the biggest culprits of my ailing health).

By the way, I'm allergic to Dairy, so for ME, it's been bad for my health. I know that many Vegetarians swear by it, and I'm not here to judge. Just saying what my personal issues are.

Hi! I've been a vegetarian now for over 18 years now. I've been unable to run for over six years now and really depressed about that. I loved the way it made me feel each time I accomplished a new goal for myself. My new goals are to get back to my ideal weight, find a new exercise regimen that I enjoy, and eat a lot healthier. I was a junk food vegetarian though and ate a lot of the quicker veggie burger type meals and then my health took a dive and I realized I was just eating the vegetarian version of a fast food diet and my health was showing that too. My stress levels are still really high and exercise and eating right will help all of that too.

Hi. Sharon is my name. I went vegetarian in 1993. Health reasons and personal preferences drove the transition. I am over weight as no longer can be active and do not really eat a healthy ovo-lacto vegetarian diet. Also an emotional eater.
I have joined this forum to get some pointers from people who may have some of the same issue I have.
As a nurse for 25 years, I am well aware that cardiologists in my practice strongly leaned towards more "Mediteranian" type diets (low fat, vegetable based). Also, emphasized moderate cardiovascular excise and stress reduction modalities. Also, weight reduction for people overweight.
Old habits have proved to be quite challenging to change. I am hoping this tool will help in a permanent healthy lifestyle change before it is too late. Launching this program is exciting to me. Good luck everybody!

Hi,

I'm Laura and right now my stepsister (who has been a vegetarian for decades) calls me a "flexitarian". Starting mid-August, I have gone about 95% meatless (shrimp and fish seem to be my downfall from achieving the 100%). I am assured I will "get there" if I want to, and if not, 95% is a lot better than full carnivore, right? Anyway, I am significantly overweight right now and after getting somewhat adjusted to an almost-vegetarian lifestyle, I am now turning toward refining it so I can lose weight.

Looking forward to learning from all of you!

Hi all - my name is Maria

I've just joined Spark People today having migrated from Weight Watchers. I've lost 2 1/2 stone so far, but still lots to go. One of the reasons I've joined Spark people is that I want to be able to track more nutritional information to make sure I'm getting all my minerals, especially calcium. Women have to be careful about bone density & I want to keep my nice and strong. Also, I've just switched to being a vegetarian so I want to keep a closer eye on things & make sure I'm balancing my proteins properly.

Generally, my emphasis is changing from just losing weight to gaining health - and Spark People seems a wonderful tool to support that.

I'm really looking forward to finding out more about what Spark People offers and hooking up with fellow Sparkies in the UK - and being inspired about vegetarianism - and perhaps veganism in the long term.

Maria emoticon

I am not sure if I posted this thread correctly but hello everybody! I have been thinking about becoming a vegetarian for a while now. I think I am going to actually go through with it. I was thinking of doing this for a month and see how it goes. It may be a bit challenging for me, especially since I work as a waitress. I am constantly around a lot of meat dishes! :-( Anyway, if I have no troubles for that month I will continue to do it. Reading everyones post has encouraged me even more to go through with becoming a vegetarian. Does anyone have any tasty vegetarian recipes they can share or any vegetarian products that are good? I have had some of the morning star products and I really like those. I have seen more at the grocery stores but I am not sure about how they would taste. Thanks in advance! :-)

Hello!
I've started to lose some weight--it's coming off slowly. I am embracing a vegetarian lifestyle in a household of carnivorous males (husband and 3 sons). Any help with recipes suitable for a "house divided" is welcomed!

Hey all - this group is so great. I've been vegan for quite some time but more recently I've been trying to cut out oils and processed foods and have lost 8 pounds. I feel so great and am hoping to continue my weight loss!

Hi all,
I watched the documentry, "Forks Over Knives" about 3 months ago and my husband and I went vegan then. We also follow Dr. McDougall's starch solution so we feel satisfied and not the trap of hunger ones experience going vegan. My weight loss may be a bit slower but it is happening (13 lbs) and I just rejoined SparkPeople last Wednsday to make sure I can control my calories more and for the motivation. I do drink greenjuice most morning that I make up in my nutribullet. This way I get the benefits of fresh veggie juice with the benefits of the fiber.
I have been "regular" for the first time in my life! My husband and I both have normal blood pressure again. And i am no longer prediabetic nor do I have the general body aches that I have been living with for quite a while. I am not doing the raw diet but do eat a lot of raw foods. Probably more as time passes. I do take thyroid meds but take them before bed, at least 2 hours after the last food eaten, then I can do soy and so during the day and not worry about the interference to the meds. Congradulations to all of you for your successes and I am so glad more and more people are being freed from the western diet which is making us all fat, sick, and prematurely dieing. Here is to good health!

Hello there!
I go by Aylamay, but my name is Margie. I have been on Spark People for about a week and a half and I have already lost eight pounds!

Before being exposed to the site, I had bought the book, "The Spark" and read that off and on for a while. After realizing I was serious about losing weight, I came to the online site. I have only now become somewhat comfortable navigating the site. Sometimes, I still get lost.

I have been a vegetarian for about four months, after talking to a friend about a medical condition we have in common. My friend mentioned to me that she has had much fewer symptoms since she became a vegetarian. Since I am all for fewer episodes of pain and nausea as a general rule, I became a vegetarian myself. I must admit, it was not as difficult as I thought it would be. Since my condition requires a high intake of protein, I meet my needs with a small amount of extra soy protein isolate powder mixed in skim milk, which does the trick. The results: I do believe I feel a little better, though not as well as I had hoped. I think that carrying around over 50 extra pounds isn't helping me, so I have my worked out for me. I look forward to working with you and meeting you all. If my experience with other groups is the same here, I will find you all to be very friendly people. I look forward to getting to know you. Margie

Hi, I joined SP about a week ago. I haven't eaten beef or pork for 25 years, but still occasionally eat seafood and poultry. I prefer vegetarian meals. Excited to find this board, and to see that it is active.

Hi Everyone! I'm Emily and I'm new to SP this week. I've been a vegetarian for about 10 years now. I'm looking to lose about 50 pounds - maybe a little more - and have a healthy lifestyle through increasing my activity level and making better food choices.

I am Grad student from Gainesville, Fl looking to loose around 35- 40 lbs, hopefully by next summer. This is my first time on a community like this and I am really looking forward to it! emoticon
I am vegetarian by birth and cook my meals most of the times. The only non vegetarian food I have ever eaten is eggs in pastries and other baked products. I would love to not only loose weight but finally get that toned look that is so youthful. I have been on the heavier side since puberty. I will be visiting my family this december and would like to loose some portion of the weight by then. My family has always been on my case about my weight and are always judging my actions.
Since joining SP I have been tracking my food and noticed that I seem to eat more carbs than protein. I would love to get some tips on including more protein to my diet.

Hi all!

I've been a vegetarian for 14 years now and wont ever go back to being a carnivore. My boyfriend of 9 years is a huge meat eater so we always seem to have the most interesting grocery bill. I'm hoping to find some new recipes and ditch the junk food. I want to drop about 50 pounds by the end of May--lets make it happen veggies! :)

Yes!!!! it is so worth it to become Vegan. when I met my husband 31 years ago he worked on a egg farm..I smelled the stench...I so the sick chickens...many where crammed into a small cage...some where growing to the cages...it was sickening...and sadly the practice still happens today....I wish I would have become a Vegan sooner....what I ate also made me very sick and today I still suffer....:(
