Hi Eric,
Welcome!
SP has such a welcoming, supportive community. Members are so supportive and helpful with advice and encouragement.
A great way to stay motivated and accountable is to be active on your Spark Teams. It's a good way to make new Spark Friends with similar interests or challenges.

By your post, you sound excited and ready to begin your journey. Kudos on quitting smoking, it's hard. I quit 4 1/2 years ago after smoking for a long time.

Best of luck to you. You can do it!

It's really great that you're finally ready to get to healthy state :) I started just over a month ago, seriously. Being a vegetarian for the last year and a half has greatly helped! I also smoked for a couple of years and it's been 14 years since I quit. It was a great feeling! I really hope you find what you're looking for here. Having support is really important, especially if you are just starting out. I wish you so much luck. Enjoy your journey :)

My name is Eric and I'm 30 years old. For most of my life, I've carried some extra weight. I was a chunky kid, a husky teen, and a "big guy" as an adult. Over the past few years, I've allowed myself to reach a state that can only be described by it's true name: obese. Throughout this time, I've been with a beautiful girl who is a normal, healthy weight and have felt inadequate and ashamed to be with her when I am so unhealthy. This led to a deep-rooted depression which, of course, only made things worse. It all came to a head when, a few weeks ago, she told me that she didn't find me physically attractive anymore. Now, my first impulse was to vilify her for this, to think of her as shallow. But, after some deep thought and personal examination, I realized that I didn't blame her. She loves me, she wants me to be healthy and active. I was over 300 pounds, I was a heavy smoker, I sat around watching tv for hours at a time, I neglected my passions. In short, I had given up. I am thankful to her for her honesty because it has motivated me in a way that I never could have motivated myself. I have been a non-smoker for two weeks now. I have noticed a drastic change in my attitude and temperament. My mood is elevated, I wake up more easily, and I have more energy. I have a gym membership and am ready to tackle my weight issue. I want to be the person she fell in love with again. I always said that, if I could quit smoking, I could do anything. It's been incredibly hard and it's not over yet. But, I feel that my chances of success are almost certain. Now, I want to do the same thing with my weight. I need help and this seemed like a good place to start. I like communicating with people who understand my situation, who are tackling the same problems. I want to share successes, to commiserate when we meet opposition, whether self-imposed or circumstantial. I want to connect with this community and allow it to become a resource that I can tap into to find success. If I can help, I will be more than happy to do so. I'm sure that I will need it, myself, along the way. It's a great feeling to finally be doing something about this. I can't wait to share my successes in the future!
