That is a perk I miss from my field technician days. Every time I upgraded a client site, they always needed to get rid of their old equipment. Hence, my electronic graveyard was born.

Hello all I am new here and just had to reply to this topic. I have a Dell PowerEdge server running server 2003 as a domain controller, dhcp, DNS, and WSUS server, a pretty sweet system for the home DVR with 500GB of space for TV recordings with 2 analog tuners and one HD. I have a Toshiba laptop that everyone in the house uses, a workstation running Vista for my wife, an Optiplex GX110 also running server 2003 and was the old domain controller, another Dell running CentOS and about 8 gx110's in the garage that I do not have the heart to get rid of because these things are such workhorses they just take what you throw at them and keep on kicking. I have a Dell PowerEdge 800 at my disposal that I have not found anything to do with yet and will be bringing a powervault home soon that I can hopefully stuff with enough drives to give me more space than I will ever need. By the way my name is Chris and I am happy to be a part of this team.

I thought I was the only one who couldn't part with my treasure from yesteryear... hmmm, guess I don't feel so bad now.

I still have some older hardware as well, thinking I would like to upgrade to at least a P4 for my next server. Currently my server is still running on a P3 500 seems to still work. Its been alright for file and print services and for 5+ years its run OK...

I will have to do the purge thing I guess, wonder if that will wait until spring?

hope, hope

Beyond that, I went against my nature and decided to purge all of the never-to-function-again components. The functioning, obsolete stuff is still under my test bench. It's a start.

I just built up what I call Frankenstein 2. Basically, it's a bunch of spare parts I had laying around from other dead PCs that I resurrected into one functioning PC. Since it's a old hardware (AMD K6/2 400, 8.6 GB HDD, 320 MB RAM), I installed Xubuntu 7.10. The darn works great too!

I still have the empty shell of the original Frankenstein, but the internals are long gone, and getting parts for an AT style case is almost impossible nowadays.

4 fried motherboards (might need a part from them someday)
5 dead hard drives
7 CD/DVD ROM drives
2 Floppy Drives

What's in service?:
1 Custom built P4 desktop - XP Home
1 Lenovo T61 - Brand spankin' new - XP Pro
1 Gateway Solo Celeron 600mhz - Xubuntu
1 Palm M105 - Still works, but barely use it.

As sad as it is now that I think about it, I have two desktops that are missing parts. I do have two working servers and two old thinkpad notebooks, then my main desktop and work notebook.

Yep, sad...

Hi,
I'm Wayne, and yes I am a geek.

I saw some of the posts about what kinds of tech toys people have and I thought of an alternate question. How many dead computers do you have lying around because you might revive them someday? For the record, I'm at 4 plus 2 old but working CRT monitors.
