Wow, BATTLE - where do you live that you're seeing this rampant macho issue? That's really sad -- I always felt very welcomed as a female into groups. Usually they were first shocked that I wanted to join in, ;-) but then happy to let me participate.

Though, I've seen some issues creeping up about people (girls seen more than guys, but I'm sure it goes both way) where since Geek is becoming the new chic, there's sort of a shunning of the "new" nerd who seems to be more in to is as a popular fad, versus those who have enjoyed all these sort of things since before it was socially acceptable and sometimes praised. I remember being a kid and feeling like I had to hide the fact I liked these things, because classmates would mock me! It was like my dark little secret that I played DND and watched Dr Who with my dad, for a long time!

It's the same debate as always - purists vs. expansionists. It's like arguing for a more structured homebrew, which isn't really my thing.

I honestly miss 2.0, most. I grew up with it, and the limitations it has are familiar friends to me. I play 3.5, now, mind you, when I can scrounge up a few players and a DM when people visit, but it's more a grudging "keeping with the times" thing. I loved THAC0 and would defend 2.0/AD&D to the death.

Where I live, there's a rampant macho thing going on in the geek community. I've been told that's not universal, but you see that nonsense at every convention ever, too, so who knows?

Pathfinder? I wasn't aware that there was a debate. Most of what I've been Game Mastering for the last few years has actually been 4th edition G.U.R.P.S. I'm currently running a semi-regular cyberpunk, Shadowrun meets Car Wars game. I'm also deeply in love with Call of Cthulhu and I've been trying to find people to play through Horror on the Orient Express. I'm reading through the 5th edition D and D rules so I can play with my kids. The D and D group that I'm D.M.'ing for is using 3.5 edition. I've looked at Pathfinder and think it looks pretty darn good, but I've got WAY too many other books for other systems to start investing in another. I do use the Pathfinder Combat Pad for my sessions, but that's it.

Rape plots? Seriously? That sucks. Right now my two groups don't have a single female player, but they're always welcome. I certainly wouldn't be throwing them into something like that. Strong female P.C.'s are always great, as are strong female players. It amazes me that some guys don't realized that they'd be able to get more members of the opposite sex to play and enjoy R.P.G.s if they'd let them be equals and not the victims.

Sorry. I'm going onto a bit of a rant.

Brody - I have such envy. I seriously need a DM. A good DM. One that doesn't try and pin female characters into rape plots every single time. My books are going to start getting dusty! Where do you stand on the Great Pathfinder Debate?

Kate - That's my favorite thing about being a nerd. There are so many things to be nerdy about! I love that we can all enthusiastically enjoy different things and still appreciate one another. Conventions are like the epitome of awesome for that reason - so many different interests, so many excited, happy people. Not that wank doesn't occur, sure, but less often than it could.

Even though I'm not familiar with everything you listed there, it makes me smile to read it :)

Welcome, fellow nerd! ^_^

Hello and welcome!

Wow! A lot of nerdy interests there. I just DM'd a D-n-D session this last weekend.

Hi! I'm a 30-something nerd girl, with a wide variety of nerdy interests.

Gaming - I prefer JRPGs, though I got my start on MUDs back in the day. I spend most of my gaming time on FFXIV, anymore, and yes, I'm the cliche female white mage. I used to feel bad about it, but not anymore. I love D&D and pencil-and-paper role-playing games, though I haven't gotten to really enjoy them since my regular DM moved away. I live in a small town, and finding a good group isn't easy. I also love retro games, though I play them mostly on the WiiU virtual console. Earthbound is probably my favorite game ever.

I am hugely in to Star Wars. I had Darth Vader curtains for years, and come down on the side of the mpire, not Rebellion. I've been collecting the Black Series action figures, recently, because they're beautiful. I'm not current on Rebels, which I suppose makes me a bit lame.

On the comic book front, I'm following Fables, and not a lot else. I have always had a weakness for fairytales.

I love Hulu, because it's introduced me to a lot of anime that I wouldn't have had access to, otherwise. I dabble in jdramas and kdramas. I'm absolutely sunk on Whedon, Who, and so on, too. I grew up on Star Trek, Battlestar, and I guess you could say I came by my nerd honestly.

I am a voracious reader, mostly in the sci-fi/fantasy area. Cory Doctorow is probably my favorite writer, currently, but I also adore Walter Jon Williams.

I could go on forever so I'm going to stop.

May the Force Be With You!
