Yeah finding a balance is something I definitely need to work on. I also sort of feel like it is the key to succeeding at grad school! I commute by bus so no I probably won't be doing any exercises while doing so....unless I want the bus driver to stop the bus and call the exorcist!

Hi Miriam,
and emoticon

It is hard to find time for anything not related to school as a grad student. I think, and I have not done this yet as I am just getting started myself, it is necessary to schedule time for exercise the same way one schedules classes, study time, work, etc. Since I began exercising a few weeks ago, I feel more alert and seem to be able to focus better, which should encourage consistent exercise efforts.

I don't know how your commute is, but there are some exercises that can be done while sitting in your car stopped at traffic lights. I do believe I saw a Spark article on this a few days ago.

Good luck with your weight loss goals!
And good luck getting into the PhD program!

Bent and broken them down,
Could have stood up sharply in the sky.

Hi Miriam - and welcome!

I wish I had some magic advice for you about fitting it all in, but I think yours is a common struggle. I guess the best we can do is keep struggling and supporting one another.

Hi All,

My name is Miriam and I am turning 26 in September. I took two years off between undergraduate and graduate school to work as an RA. I have now just finished the first year of my masters in experimental psychology. I am hoping to be promoted to the PhD program at the end of summer which will mean that I have four more years until I graduate!

. So far I have been really struggling to find a balance with school, home life, friends and fitness!! I live with my boyfriend and our two dogs. Last year we lived in the same city as my school but this year we moved to be closer to my boyfriend's work so I will be commuting 45 minutes a day to get to school.

I put on some weight this past year and I am determined to get into some healthier habits for september. For me, cardio has always been a huge stress reliever and thus far I've found the expectations of graduate school to be highly stressful. Despite that I find that it is easy to focus on school or family and forget to put some time into fitness as well.
