Howdy!

I joined SparkPeople a couple weeks ago when I realized I'd been taking what my doctor told me as advice only. Now I'm getting serious about him telling me to lose weight.

I was a Christian from a pretty young age until I was about 30. Took it pretty seriously. Taking it seriously is what led me right out of religion.

Now I'm 39, finally on a trajectory toward a variety of things I want to be doing. Happy to find like-minded community to help with my health goals.

HI everyone. I would say I am an agnostic humanist. I have never believed in a god. Personally, I think if there was a god with any kind of decency and respect, he or she would have never made humans or made them nicer to one another LoL.

Its nice to find people who don't say they will pray for me or give their thoughts and prayers! I really don't care for that, as well meaning as it is in their minds. I have found Christians as bad as anyone since they really do like their version of "sharia law." If you don't agree than they are being discriminated against. Whatever! I find that is what is wrong with this country right now more than anything!

You can learn a lot by looking at my Spark Page, if you are so inclined. However, I love music, sports, reading, writing, exercise, dancing, black and white photography and eating well!

Hi, I'm new/old. I was on this site six years ago, but got discouraged and gained back 20 of the 40 pounds I lost. I can't afford therapy, so decided I would come back to a group that had helped me in the past.

Hi folks!

2018 was a difficult year for me and my family, and I went back up to highest weight. So I'm trying to put my health first. Walking every day, doing 16/8 intermittent fasting, eating lots of veggies and fewer carbs. I'm also planning to spend more time writing a scifi novel I'm working on; I'm in my 50s and writing seriously for the first time.

I was raised Catholic at a parish that was pretty progressive. I haven't had negative experiences with religion, but I realized, I think around 4th or 5th grade, that I'm not a believer. When I look at how the world works, it's obvious to me that we only have each other. I support any kind of faith or non-faith as long as you are helping others, not hurting them. ReligiousTolerance.org has been one of my favorite websites since I because a heavy internet user around 1998.

Things about me, hmmm... I like tv shows better than movies; I like to get to know characters over time. I prefer fantasy, science fiction, paranormal, that kind of thing, although I will occasionally follow a realistic show if it is good. I collect teddy bears and other plushies (or perhaps I should say collected, we are pretty much out of room for any more, lol). My husband has a lot of health issues, which is the biggest source of stress in my life. Right now his health is ok, but his work situation has reached a breaking point and he's activity looking for another job. I'm trying to find better ways to deal with stress and stop it from upending my goals. I'm a science enthusiast and kind of an information junkie, lol.

I hope everyone is having a great 2019 so far, and best of luck in the future. And Happy Chinese New Year!

Hodge

I'm writing a novel, on the backs of envelopes and discarded pieces of paper.

Hi - This may be more of a re-introduction, because I think that I was on this forum years before. Anyway, I'm reconnecting with SP. I'm a Humanist in Connecticut and am looking to lose about 55 lbs. Started current weight loss effort 5 weeks ago and and am down 5.2.

Look forward to giving and receiving support!

I am living the lifestyle of the thin person that I am in the process of becoming.

Hello, I'm a 31yo (31?!) librarian in Nebraska. I'm married with no kids but 5 cats and have lost over 130lbs so far. I have about 60lbs to go before I hit goal, and I am at the point where I go updownupdownupdownup plateau big loss updownupdownupdown. It's very frustrating. I am looking for active groups to chat in so I can stay active on the site and keep my motivation going.

Hi, new to the team, been on Spark about a year. I just took a 1 month diet break for my 1 year anniversary. When I went back to logging I tried My Fitness Pal... gave it up after 2 weeks... they give you very little log info unless you pay ha ha.

Anyway... I am 53, sort of retired, from Texas. I was a single dad for 16 years and when the kids moved out I quit my job (at 48) and moved to the Philippines. Over 80% catholic here - should have picked Thailand ha ha. buddhists make more sense than catholics. I am finally only 1 year away from retiring, so that is good.

I got over here at 108 kilos, went to 116! I got down to 95, and during my break went back to 97. It was worth it.

They do not understand atheists very much here. All government forms still ask religion. When I mark 'other' and write in 'none' it confuses them. I am on a Facebook atheist group that has over 10,000 atheist Filipinos. Most are on fake accounts though because coming out as atheist can be social, and career, suicide here. But as a crazy foreigner they cut me some slack.

There are a lot of atheist expats over here, so there are a few sane people to talk to. emoticon

Welcome!!

It's good to see more mid-westerners here (is Minn. considered to be mid-west?). I'm originally from Nebraska, but currently in Michigan and have a hard time thinking that Michigan is mid-west. :)

Hi! My name is Ashley. I am 27, a first-year law student, mother of two school-age girls, and an Atheist living in Oklahoma. My boyfriend and I are pretty vocal about not being religious, and my six-year-old might be the biggest skeptic of the family.

Anyway, I am glad I found this group because the site seems quite religious with all of the Bible quotes floating around.

My boyfriend and I recently started exercising and eating better. We were both quite thin when we started dating almost eleven years ago and we've gained a good 20 or so pounds together. He doesn't want to join this site, but I feel like I need the accountability because it's too easy to push things off until "tomorrow," especially with the stresses of school and kids.

I am looking forward to getting to know everyone here. Have a great week!

Happy to find this group for obvious reasons as an atheist. I found the same as others; lots of people here with many religious (Christian) messages and posts. Living in the south and bible belt (only for another for some months now) and really surrounded by it.

Star Trek fanatic with hubby but also sci lover, books, etc. Daughter is home schooled the past few years (were out of the country some years ago and it supplemented but now for other reasons) and found almost every book (especially geography and math? how do you make math religious!) so we find alternate ways to add Darwinism and other subjects (along with world religion based on a factual and historical study objective to Christianity that was started in Italy when we lived there).

Hope to meet friends and weight loss support as well.

I'm so glad that i found this group! I was starting to think this was nothing but a bunch of theists on here. Well I'm 26, engaged and finally motivated to get healthy! I am still looking for a weightloss buddy, some one to chat with regularly and keep each other motivated. Granted I'm not a believer, I'm still a sucker for sci fi and fantasy things, books, movies, etc. I just love them. So yeah if ya wanna talk message me!

Hi everyone.

I'm new to atheism... been raised in generations upon generations of christianity. My husband and I went through our de-conversion about 4 months ago. In the past 4 months.. only one very dear friend of mine knows that I no longer believe in god. I'm a PK and I live in the bible belt. Finding people I can talk to is like finding a needle in a haystack. Did I mention I'm overweight? (lol) So... I'm really glad I found this group and would love some support in losing these pounds like I lost my religion. emoticon

Welcome Suzy! I had originally lost about 50 pounds, but have since gained almost all of it back and have been sort of stuck in the same boat....I'll get going in the right direction and lose 5-10 pounds and then gain it back. I need to make some long term changes and get back to my goal!

Hello,

I decided to reactivate myself with SPARK - tired of losing and gain the same 7 or 8 pounds. I'm looking for a supportive community that isn't too committed to any particular approach to weight loss and where people don't talk about church all the time. Maybe this'll be a good place for me:)

This turtle is to remind myself that slow but steady wins the race.

Welcome!!

Being a non-believer from a small town in Nebraska is rough, but I can't even imagine what it would be like in Texas! Yikes. I love the Pacific Northwest and have read that it is home to the largest population of the non-religious. Perhaps one day I can make it up that way to find my peeps. :)

Yesssss, I found the cool kids lol! Finding this group actually gives me a lot of motivation to stick around. Living in small-town Texas, my husband and I find it increasingly difficult to locate other secular folks, so we'll take what we can get here. We joined SP for motivation and support to achieve our goals- we believe that it's in OUR hands, we hold ourselves personally responsible for our success (or lack thereof). Being told to pray about it gets old real quick, so I feel that this group could play a fairly important role for us. No pressure!

You gettin' maaaaaaad- I'm gettin' FISH!

Funny how that's such a cliche of marriage, Renae.

My husband has always been thin, a runner with a fast metabolism. So while we both kind of got into a habit of junk food and video games and binge watching our favourite TV shows, he's hardly gained any weight at all and here I am, needing to buy all new clothes because I can't fit into anything any more.

He definitely wants to get back to being active - so we've set a goal to be back into jogging shape by the summer, and he's been eating healthy with me, but still at the end of the night he can open a bag of chips as a snack and be fine. I just sit there and glare at him lol.

Krystin - I can relate to gaining weight after marriage! I had lost 50 pounds and was doing great! Then I met my husband, who loves to cook, and the weight slowly started creeping back on . We've now been married just over a year and I gained back nearly every pound I had lost, which is also why I'm back and this time my hubby and I are doing this together!

Heelllooooo everyone! I'm Krystin. I was in another atheist/secular team but it was dead over there, so I've defected. Hmmm about me...I was raised by a very Christian mother, as well as her very religious family. Like, my grandfather worked for Crossroads Canada and every year I was at Kingdom Bound, singing along to DC Talk or Rebecca St. James...as if I'd picked that for myself. It wasn't until college, after taking a philosophy class, that my mind opened up to a whole new set of ideas and by my early 20s, I considered myself atheist and had effectively pissed off the majority of the maternal side of my family. C'est la vie!

I have always been on the, let's say rolly-polly, side of things in body type. My mother started taking my to Weight Watchers at age 10 (I'm sure that didn't give me body image issues AT ALL :/ ) By age 25 I was sitting around 220lbs. I set out to create a healthier lifestyle and feel more like the person I knew I could be. So I started my weight loss journey for realsies in 2012 and lost 70lbs....

...Then I met my husband, got married and suddenly I'm back up 40lbs in 3 years, so here am I again. And wouldn't you know, he's still skinny as a rail! Psshh.

I turned 30 in November so I figure I really need to get my s*** in order and focus on living a healthy life, permanently. No more excuses.

I'm always looking for people to talk to on here for fun and for support, so if you get a friend request from me, that's why!

Hi, everyone!
I'm not new to SparkPeople, but I've just decided to come back.
I'm from Iowa, but I've been living in Taiwan for 3 years with my husband (who is Taiwanese) and our 1.5 year old son.
I enjoy cooking, hiking, reading, listening to music, and daydreaming.

Very quick intro. I've been a member of "Separation of Church and Weight" team for years, but it's not too active. Glad to find this team!

Overweight, binger my whole life....daughter of one... But have worked on habits for last 5 years, and now I binge maybe once a year or so, if that much. I like the 4 Day Win by Martha Beck and it has helped me work on habits.

Weight is slowly, slowly trending down! Very active, love my treadmill, hiking, Zumba, stair stepping.

Have had to fight fear of "losing weight" as well... You know the fears... But I'm more interested in being healthy and light now.

Intermediate/Advanced French speaker.

Atheist all my life and attend some meetings in my city. Also lead an Atheist Volunteer group.

That's all for now!

Hi, I'm newly returned to SP. I love the trackers, and now I'm trying to figure out how to benefit from the community. A little about me: 38, teacher, like hiking/camping, art, books, science... Mostly vegetarian diet. Want to lose about 45 lbs or so. Nice to meet you! :)

Hello all. I am not a newbie but I'm starting over and wanted to re-introduce myself. I'm a long time SP user and I've struggled with my weight and weight loss for years. I am a non-believer and non-traditional student. I live in the midwest which can be frustrating for a non-believer and flaming liberal. :)

My short-term goal is to drop 10 pounds, then 25 and ultimately 50+, but one pound at a time!

I love having a place where I can discuss things without being inundated with faith and religious opinion, which is why we have this group!
