I was planning on doing the Couch 2 5k program and then there is a run or dye here in Minot in September. I never thought to work on swimming / biking before the walk/run. That sounds like a better option so I don't end up damaging my knees by going straight to the running.

I read your summary on your Sparkpage and you have a GREAT attitude to get started! Baby steps are the key! Expect a few setbacks and be prepared to move on. Plan to get LOTS of'll need it.

As you said, learn to swim and spend lots of time in the water and on your bike. These two disciplines are low impact and will allow you build your cardio base.

Triathlons are FUN! Are they hard, well, yes. But they are fun as well. Start with a beginner race and gradually work your way up through the distances to learn how to handle your nutrition and to get a respect for each distance (trust me, they all seem easier on paper!) Once you make the leap from the Olympic distance to the half and full distances you would be well served to consider adding a coach.

Good luck! You'll have the time of your life!

Guess I am supposed to introduce myself here. Here goes:
Hi, I am John. I am a little (OK, a lot) heavy and I guess it's time for a Change. I've been a rather large guy for all my life and I just got used to it, and even joked about it. Lately though, I've been feeling the need to do something different and get in shape. This may sound funny, but I seriously want to participate in a Triathlon.

I'm hoping that the tools/resources/community here are SparkPeople will help me to realize this goal and finally get in shape.

I have 3 wonderful kids (20, 6, 2) that are looking to me to be a role model to them, and sitting all day on the chair surfing the web is not the role model I want to be.

Please feel free to visit my blog (I'm new to blogging so bear with me) or send me a message. I need to be online at least a few quick times a day to log my food and update the blog.

Blessed Be
