Thanks everyone for welcoming me to the team! I'll take your suggestions about swimming and know I need to bite the bullet and just keep getting in the water. I have to remind myself I didn't just go out one day and run a marathon, I actually had to train and that was hard too. Swimming is very humbling for me :)

Welcome to the team! Tri's are a lot of fun, and I have always enjoyed the camaraderie I get at an event.

As for swimming, the only way to get comfortable is put the time in. Classes are a great idea. If there is a local tri club near you, they probably even do some group open water swims so you can get used to swimming with other people in your way.

My first tri is on the list for this year. I love the idea of a class and will have to start looking - swimming is he one part I don't have conquered.

Hi Maria,

I did my first Triathlon last year. The swim has always been my weakest event too. I took some group lessons at my health club. I didn't (and wish very much that I had) do any open water swims before the event. I recommend doing the pool work to get comfortable but before the race - try to get out in the water. It's differnt.

Good luck!

Hi Maria, welcome to the team! Good luck on your training, you can do it!

Also forgot to add, when I did my first sprint last year I had zero swimming and took a basics class (everyone in it was doing their first tri!). It made me comfortable enough to do it and when it came down to it the swimming wasn't bad....my worst was running because I had used all my energy on the other two, but it was do-able.

Welcome! To get over your fear of the swim, find a swim coach or swim class. You may need to start with the basics and work your way up to being able to swim for 200-400 meters in a group.

You will do it!

Hey folks!

I'm a runner at heart and have decided to take the plunge this year and focus on overcoming my fear of drowning...since I almost did as a kid. Anyway, I'm GOING TO DO A TRI this year! SERIOUSLY. Of course, sprint tri would be the way to go for me right now, but maybe an Ironman one day. I'll let you know after I get comfortable in the water. My goal is to fall in love with swimming like I have for running and cycling.

Anyway, this SoCal girl just wanted to stop by and introduce myself to the group...so HELLO :)

-Maria

P.S. Any other newbie swimmers out there? I'd love to hear from you.
