Before we even thought about this issue we had an incident.....
My oldest's first Halloween , my mom had bought a few decorations ,one was a witch, my son cried and cried . We took everything down and never put it up. He always has had a discerning spirit. We always had Awana events on that night. My fil would say why dont you bring the kids here trick or treating? ( funny he never asked them to be there other times) So to appease him, we brought them in their Awana uniforms.. LOLOLOL We always just told them what the night was and didnt press... Now that they are older I will say they dress up for fun and go to parties.( 20,23,25)
We didnt push it when they were young and they never seemed interested.. so it worked out.

I know, I was fighting dh on doing anything. I tried for game night. I do feel okay with how we ended up dealing with it tho.

When I was a young parent, feeling the weight of deciding what kinds of influences to allow, I really stressed out about the whole dark spiritualism of Halloween. Whether I was right to keep the kids out of it or not is still open for debate, but we chose to stay away from all of it. Later, when I did more research (and was an older, wiser parent), I felt more comfortable just focusing on the historical aspects of All Saints' Day, Reformation Day, etc. I now feel like we could've enjoyed the fun as a family without getting sucked into the dark side of things.

Oh well, parenting is usually a learn-as-you-go project anyway...sigh...

I'm not a big fan of Halloween either. I like seeing fun costumes, but I'm not into the whole scary thing. For the last several years, I have tried to convince the kids to do a movie night or something different, but they have fought me on it. We live in a neighborhood where a big group of kids go out together with a couple of parents and then all the kids trade candy afterwards. I have to admit, they do have a lot of fun together and it's only once a year. The kids always go to visit certain friends in the neighborhood (whose kids are all grown up). I don't let the kids keep the candy for that long anyways. So after a day or two, the candy usually gets donated to a jar we use for our homeschool group.

Well, the kids usually walk one or two blocks, 'cause I'm not a big fan, and then we use it as a chance to visit 5-6 older folks we know but don't see often. It's actually one night when dh will join us for a couple hours visiting. The church is having Trunk or Treat in the parking lot again, so we'll grab some candy and join the younger families there earlier.

Here's a question:

How do you (or do you) handle Halloween at your house?

We pretty much ignored it because we always lived way out in the sticks and no one came to our house. We'd go to church if they were having something, but we didn't take the kids trick or treating.

I was a waitress at a little coffee shop on Saturdays. All homemade stuff--cinnamon rolls, coffee cake, cobblers, bread, soup. Packed til they closed at 3!

We used to go out to lunch with friends after church on Sundays but haven't been doing that for the past few years. We were having church in our home for about 3 years and would always have a fellowship lunch after services for anyone who wanted to stay. That is closer to what I would like to do, but that's not what usually happens.

Although it is still a day of worship and spiritual rest and refreshment, we find ourselves preparing for Monday and the upcoming week by catching up on chores, etc.

I have never let my kids participate in any sports event that happened on Sunday mornings, though.

We occasionally shop on Sundays. I think it would be nice to have it where families were more 'forced' to have quality time like in the real oldie days. A day to take a break from work and visit with families you know, too. Guess I've been reading too many Amish books lately. ;)

Grrr. Had the next question in my mind when I answered above, and now I forgot!

We don't shop on Sundays. I don't like to make others work on the Sabbath. I think it would be nice if our society still recognized Sunday as a day of rest--for worship, family, and reflection.

Good morning! Back from church, where today's thought came to me, thinking about the 70s.
I remember when all the stores were closed on Sundays, way back then. So--

emoticon emoticon Do you wish stores were still closed on Sundays? Would it affect your life?

And here are a few Sunday get-up-and-dance toons from the 70s, too!

I'd rather exercise alone, but I'm loving this strength training class at the community college! I guess I still feel like I'm alone there, because I don't have an exercise buddy--I just work my own plan.

I like walking with someone. The conversation makes it go so much faster!

You have some good picks there--.Laura Ingalls Wilder, Ralph Moody, Edith Nesbit, Robert McCloskey, and Hans Christian Andersen. I also love Virginia Lee Burton, Diane Stanley, and Peter Spiers. Have you ever seen his Bored- Nothing to Do? And I just realized Norton Juster wrote more than Phantom Tollbooth. I've shared that book with more people! May have to check out his others...

QOTD: Do you prefer exercising on your own or going to a class or gym? I'm on my own. Tho I do like walking with one or two friends for company. :)

You ask such hard questions Tina. You really expect me to choose just one?

C.S. Lewis is one of my favorite authors of all time (for adults and children) so I'll pick him. But there are so many other great children's authors...Laura Ingalls Wilder, Ralph Moody, Edith Nesbit, E.B. White, Lloyd Alexander, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Brian Jacques, J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert Louis Stevenson, Robert McCloskey, Richard Peck, Scott O'dell, Beatrix Potter, Roald Dahl, and Hans Christian Andersen (just to name a few).

QOTD: Is there any particular time period you have a fondness for?

For me it would be the 1930s. I love reading books set in that time period, living during the depression, and the colors they used in quilts then are definitely MY colors! My favorite author for those is Dorothy Garlock.

The only camping we did when I was a kid was when I went deer hunting with my Dad a couple of times. He made my mother really MAD the only two times she went camping early in their marriage and she would never go again. *Not too smart, Dad!

We now go camping for at least two weeks every summer and have since our kids were young.

DId you you any camping as a kid? Stories?
We went camping every weekend at a state camp. Everything was waiting at the door when Dad pulled in at 4:30 on the dot, and we loaded up and headed out for the weekend. I guess we did this summers for several years. Sometimes Dad gave or sold the tent to some family traveling cross country in their car. Dad had chipmunks coming up and eating peanuts out of his pocket sometimes. He worked at getting them used to him, of course. :)

We did school too Tambi! My husband had to fly our to WI again so we couldn't really do anything as a family. It was drizzling here on and off, but we did go swimming in the afternoon and we got to soak in the spa at the end. I also watched and read As You Like It and Romeo & Juliet in prep for the Shakespeare class I'm teaching.

Oldest went to the State Fair with a friend, dd off with her friend. Went to the parade with my sister to watch younger son walk with the football game, then out to eat. Then instead of heading to the office--our original plan- we watched 10 episodes of a 'new to us' TV show on Netflix. Good rest before we dig in today. :)

Laugh if you must, but we did school. It was raining out and we didn't have anything planned, so we hit the books. Two of the children's online teachers offered extra credit for work turned in yesterday and they both got "102%". We'll take it!

We've done it both ways, but generally we jump in with everything because we never really take the summer off. And during the year we will take breaks from certain subjects if we need to and then pick them back up later.

QOTD: Do you start school with just a couple subjects the first week or two or do you jump into all of it right away?

Crockpot -- although I don't use it as much as I would like. I use the oven and the microwave the most.

Stovetop. I almost never think of using the crockpot, tho I should! One year I got a crockpot cookbook from the library, and tried 3-4 new recipes while we were on vacation. I'm thinking no one really minded trying something new then, as they ate everything without complaint. :)

My trips are almost always done mid-day, unless it's the "BIG" trip of the month, then that's late at night.

We have to travel an hour to do our shopping, so we usually combine the trip with lots of errands. That means that grocery shopping is the last thing we do before coming home, so it's usually in the afternoon or early evening.

We make a broccoli cauliflower salad, instead of sugar I use Stevia and it still tastes great!

What is the 'first graduate syndrome?'

I did paint the stair risers. Put primer on a dresser and tea cart, but haven't finished painting them yet and haven't started any of the rooms yet. Ds and I have been so busy with everything else. I figure I'll get to it soon enough. LOL

How do you like your blue and beige?

Hmmm....I think I missed an "official" spring cleaning this year due to so many projects going on, but I normally do. I also do a fall cleaning in prep for the winter. :)

And I did my spring cleaning a couple weeks ago getting ready for the graduation party. lol Did you do any painting? I went a bit deeper blue in the hallway and a beige in the stairwell. My friend who did it said it was part of the 'first graduate syndrome'. :)

I bought a great one for a pot. (It's the multi-flowered one in my blog pics.) You just needed to pull the bottom off the pot and set it on top of the planter. 30 second planter was right! :)

I've yet to retackle my garden. I was so disappointed with the work ds and I did for naught and haven't bothered to get at it. At this point I think I will wait until next year and just plant some things in pots. =/

Are you working in the yard? What are you working on?

I bought some tomato, celery, and pepper plants, so need to get those in the garden ASAP.
