Hope the new cement got cured before all the rain hit. We have had real nice growing weather here, just enough rain to keep everything great. Been mowing the lawn every 6-7 days. Sure been busy with the 3rd. of July on, still hasn't let up yet. Hosting the annual Warner reunion this Sat.reminded everyone to bring their best dish so people would eat it and not have to take it all back home.LOL. Sunday go to Galesburg for GD#9 6th. birthday party.
Life has been so good to me!

Hope you are all doing well. I had a switch in employees and am busy training someone new. Today we are pouring cement for new bunker silos and bringing in some dry bales.

We've had almost perfect weather so far, just enough rain to get us by and not too much wind, although did experience some bending over and "green snap" of the corn. Getting more rain overnight and now, keeping me inside, doing catch up inside work. Had to get the cauliflower out, don't know how you women do it around food all day, you deserve a medal.
Supposed to go to a miner league baseball game tonight with S#2 and family, GS# 7 won them for winning a reading award, thank goodness they love to read like their Mother. Hope it's not rained out.
Have a great day.

we've had over 5" of rain. This is not just in this area, but about a 70 miles "swipe" down the state--so all this water will come down the Jim River (we live a mile from it) the road was under water last night when I came home-so I will have to be taking the other way around to get to work. Lots of farm ground won't get farmed at all this year. We had water like this about 2 months ago, but the river went back in its bank and it looked like maybe some soybeans could be planted but that's not the case now. We use to farm ground next to the river--glad we're not farming it anymore.

Wow Jeffrey you wore me out just reading.
I have been gone to NC for a week for GD#6 HS graduation, always a great 900 mile trip.
Kept up with the exercise helping S # 1 with many projects plus get ready for the party.
Left NC at 4 AM landed here at 8 PM., went through three bad rain storms, the worst while going through Indianapolis.
Tired, going to bed.

Hi Everyone emoticon

I've been so busy lately emoticon First off we did go through with the wedding emoticon emoticon Everything is going great with that.

I've been working with a friend at his salvage yard and car lot emoticon so that has kept me pretty busy.

Still in the same place, we decided to stick it out here for one more winter emoticon then we will be moving next spring to florida or tennessee. Havent decided yet. At least that gives us time to svae some money emoticon

Took a few weeks off so I can help get the house ready for landlord visits in july. They only come once a year. Put in some laminate flooring in the kitchen and it sure makes a difference. Need to do some yard work and painting the wheelchair ramp.

A friend gave us some strawberry plants in a pot but I thin it will do better planted in the ground. May get more berries then.

Gonna try and get some tomato plants too and plant them this week. Doing some gardening may help me feel better.

Miss being on this team, I should be able to keep up from now on.

Welcome to any newcomers. emoticon

Our corn on corn is finally taking off and getting a better color. Beans are up and look pretty good for them. Finished NT drilling the last of the neighbors almost dried out mud holes this PM, supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow.
Will have a busy week before our trip to GD# 6th. HS graduation in NC, really looking forward to seeing them, haven't been there for 18 months. Have 2 loads of corn to load out Tue. and spraying the corn for the last time, if the rain and wind doesn't cooperate might have to have it custom applied while gone. It's always a timing thing.
Glad you got the first cutting of hay up, hate to see that one get rained on, so hard to dry out.
Everyone have a great Memorial Day and say many prayers for the fallen soldier and there family.

Too bad we can't spread the rain a little more evenly over the country.

We had a mouse travel a whole week with us in the back of our pick up one vacation. We tried to chase it out several times, but only finally caught it in a trap when we got back.

I'll hope for rain with you. My DH wants to move ground for a bunker silo, so he not hoping for rain so much.

I finished my beans yesterday, still have over 100 acres of custom drilling to do.
Just did odds and ends today, got my pickup from the "crash place" glad I had ole stinky to drive. My GLBH gave it that name because the mice think it's theirs.
We need rain bad, nephew is planting his beans tonight, can hardly see the tractor from all the dust. Wind has been very strong all PM, sure hope it brings rain.
Have a great week.

We receive .6 of an inch Sat. night, was really needed.
Am going to plant the rest of my sweet corn today, was going to spray but too windy and tomorrow will be better.
Winding Road, looks like a very busy couple weeks ahead for sure. I see by the planting report we"Ill." are 73% planted, a neighbor stopped by last week and I asked him if he started planting yet, said no, was not going to plant in the same month that he finished picking! Thought that was pretty funny. Isn't Life the greatest?

I will try to do this again, just lost everything I typed.
Finished planting corn April. 21st. by far the earliest in the 52 years of farming. Put planter away yesterday, sure hope I don't have to get it out again this year. We need rain, I see It's raining in central Ill., maybe it will follow the river North and catch us.
My Silverado Is already in the body shop getting repaired, they are in a world of hurt for work like everywhere else. Cost 5 big ones, Planter only sustained about 300.00, I was cutting the wheel while backing and only caught the one row unit, lucky I didn't back square and catch all 12 rows. Always have to look at the bright side.
GLBH has radishes and onions planted and I put in about half of the sweet corn 2 weeks ago, will plant the rest after a rain.

Yes, spring is here after that long cold winter. I planted some strawberries Tuesday--they are close to the house so should survive. Might be early, but they're better than sitting in the bag molding.

Would like to welcome a new member to our team PAPAGB'S, let's make him feel at home.
Beautiful weather here lately, set a new record yesterday, 83. Finished with applying nitrogen, always glad when I finish that, somewhat dangerous. Now just hook up the planter and make sure everything works.soonest I'll start is the April 15th.
Everyone have a great Easter, HE DID ARISE!

most of our snow is gone, The Jim River is over it's banks all across the state. The Jim is just a mile from our house, so that road that goes west of us is under water. We haven't had much sun--lot of cool, cloudy days, but it looks like the sun is out today!!

Hope you have a good Easter too! It was very spring like here and then we had a big snow again--school was even delayed. It's warming up again, but I won't count on spring until March is gone. Peas are in the ground though and we want to trim trees too.

Looks like spring is trying to come to N. Ill. Been in the high 40's the last few days. Been able to do much outdoor work. Trimming trees and fence line brush, they sure can make a mess with the equipment as you pass by, also such good exercise. Had to buy a new chain saw, I call them throwaway ones, under $100.00, use them once when new lay around till next year, can't start them, spend another $50.00 on them then they work 5 minutes and quit, so you throw them away. Spring is really an exciting time of the year.
My wishes are for everyone to have a blessed Easter.

Lots of snow here in SD--now it is raining, so it is a muddy mess. Gravel roads are bad--you just stay in the middle of the road and give it hell. Don't like to say too much about all the moisture, because come July we'll probably be crying for rain.

Glad to see some action here again, Amanda emailed too and hadn't heard from her for sometime.
Jeffery sorry about the pup, those things happen. April 1st. will be here before you know it, all those last minute details you know, the best to you and your bride.
Must be septic season, my #2 S had his plugged last week so I decided we maybe should get ours pumped out while they could get on the frozen field to spread. Hadn't had it done for many years.
Glad the cows are doing pretty well, the winter sometimes can take it's toll on production. I know the BH will appreciate the new feed mill, hate the expense but sometimes you just have to"bite the bullet". It will speed up the grinding chores.
I ended up getting a different tractor for the GLBH, she is such good help, dependable, pleasant to be around, takes direction eagerly,[might be some lacking on this one]and works soo darn cheap. Our Nephew wanted to move one of his so we bought it. It has automatic transmission, much better for her to shift, I treat her so nice. emoticon
Sure hope everyone has a great Spark week.

Hello and thanks for posting again Jeffery. The snow is melting here too! Sometimes progress comes disguised as a mess--sounds like that might be the case for your septic. Is also sounds like you will have a lovely wedding. So sorry about Gracie. DS just finished basketball season and participated in an archery tournament. Soon soccer will start up again. We just replaced our spouting because the snow knocked a bunch of it down this winter. The cows are doing really pretty well and we are soon to get a new feed mixer which should spare my DH from more breakdowns. Good to hear from you again.

Looks like no one has posted for a while. We finally got our septic in last month. They found out we had several old septic tanks on the property and dug them all out and then put in the new one. Now the yard is a big muddy mess.

This month has been a bad month. Three of our puppies came down with parvo and we lost one Gracie was her name. We will miss her so much. The other two are recovering nicely.

We are getting married the 1st of April. We cant afford a big wedding so were having a small ceremony and a reception at the Old Country Buffet afterwards. Very simple.

Snow is melting here, so looking forward to the warmer weather.

Hope to see more posts here later.

Wow Jeffery, sure surprised to hear they could dig for the septic tank, good news. We have been hovering around 0 for several days. Have to put the heat bulbs on the washing machine to thaw out the water. Wanted to haul out some corn from the bin this AM, unloading auger is frozen, chipped away at it yesterday then put heat bulb in it overnight but still froze, called off the truck's and they weren't sure they could get the trucks going anyway. It'll worm up sometime.

Not sure if everyone posts here yet. Sorry for the abscence, things have been so hectic. Been waiting for a new septic tank to be installed. Hopefully work will start sometime this week.

Getting some snow here but it sure is cold cold cold. Been so addicted to the facebook game farmville. Just like a real farm. Sure keeps you busy harvesting your gardens and animals. Makes me want the farm back so much.
Sure is easier playing the game then harvesting in the snow. UUUUGGGGHHHH!!!!

Hope everyone had a great Holiday. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

Here in South Dakota, we must have 6-8" on the ground with a forecast of at least 3X that amount tonight and tomorrow with 40-50mph winds.
Merry Christmas!

rained here most of yesterday. Very wet here--had over an inch of rain--which we didn't need, but west of here has that much or more--SNOW

Gotta tell you a true painting story about a good friend of ours. His BH does all the painting inside the house. She always moves all furniture to one side of the room does one side and then next day does the other. Was doing the bedroom and H went upstairs to go to bed and hollered to his W what was with all the furniture to one side of the room? She said I'm painting, can't you tell? He says well which way you going? Her answer, it's only been that color for 14 years!
Getting rain late this PM, I quit combining but several neighbors were still going, you know it's getting serious.
Have a great night.

Combined some end rows off this PM, about 1000 bu. put in the bin with another 800 from yesterday, had the heat on all night but just takes so long to dry. I'm going to have to make some expensive decisions, no way will I be able to get this large crop dried this year. And I still have over 20 acres of beans left. Next week is supposed to colder but no rain or snow, sure hope so. Life is sure a hoot! Have a great night. Skeeter

here in SD, hardly anyone has corn out. I heard only 9%--very small this time of year. Lots of beans out, too. It's been so wet. Rain again Wed. night and Thursday. It's coming your way, Skeeter!!

I guess I'm going to have to look up that game Jeffrey, sure not getting much field work done. 20 some acres of beans left with this horrible weather and haven't even started corn yet, one month behind, don't look good. Still breathing, still eating and still able to have a laugh about it. Life is great!

Hi Everyone,

Sorry I've been missing in action for a while. Ive had lots of work come my way these last few days so Ive been very busy.
Facebook has a game where you get a farm and have a garden and animals. Its pretty cool. I dont have a farm right now so this is the next best thing. Its very addicting. The animals are realistic, you have to milk them, collect eggs, collect wool, .
I even have a pink cow. No I havent been drinking!!!

Hope everyone has a great Monday.

Hi folks.. 28 degrees with snow, ice and ice fog to make Wyoming a mess the other day..Nebraska wasn't much better for first 100 miles.. At least here in Mizzou and Iowa its just drizzle at 40 Degrees, for the moment.
Lyle, figured you got a good freeze other day. makes for more work..but then again, what in farming doesn't?
jeffrey..take care young man. We all want to see pics of you at the wedding..
And for any I may have missed..thank you for the kind words on my page..Still working on getting a camera for road pics to download.
Have a good week all, and keep your chins high, and your eye on the prize..every day is a blessing, make the most of it.

Sorry Jeffrey about the pain, probable has something to do with the weather.
Good thing to meet with the Pastor, he might keep you in shape. emoticon
Had a hard freeze the last two nights, finally turned on the furnace late last night. Our crops, corn and beans, are about one month behind. Many in our area were not mature before the frost hit. For the city folks that means very light test weight and poor quality, have you ever ate fresh vegetable that were not good, same thing with our crops. We need some sunshine and no rain for the beans, can do the corn when wet, just cost much $ and time to dry down artificially, and poor quality corn doesn't store well. My Daddy always said "God never promised you a rose garden". Things will get done.

This is a fun thread to catch up on. Jeffery, congrats on the wedding. And good to see you all again. BTW have you heard of the alternate PETA group? "People for the Eating of Tasty Animals"...ha...that's one I could join. They keep warning us that the regular PETA's next target is OH.

Feeling pretty good today. Although I'm tired. We fell asleep with the tv on and a hunting show came on and they were calling ducks and shooting them. The blasted dogs barked at the tv whenever they used there duck calls. So we ended up getting up at 5am.
Good Grief, what a start to the day.

My family isnt to happy about our farm theme and things being casual but this is our wedding and not theres. We have a budget we are sticking too. Not going into debt for this.

Skeeter,
Great hearing from you. Was starting to worry.
Would love to have her play the organ. No organ at this church, they use a sound system.

Gonna do some scrapping today. Hopefully it will be worth all the work.

Puppies...how cute..congrats on the wedding too. We also did a semi low budget, all cash deal.. While she may have some friends who wonder why, these days it makes more sense than ever to keep it as low budget and paid for as possible. Best wishes to the two of you..and the puppies. Last 2 litters of pups we had was the pit and she had 12..then 8, which was last time we let her out without supervision.. p.s. pics of puppies always adorable, esp. once they are up and around wrestling with each other.

Got some news to share. We are getting married on May 7, 2010. Thats only eight months away. We are having a casual wedding at my church with a farm themed reception. Its going to be fun. The wedding cake has a farm, silo, chickens, pigs and sheep on it. I will post the photo on my sparkpage so check it out.

We are doing the reception ourselves to keep the cost down and a friend is making the cake for us. That is a huge help and friends have volunteered to help with decorations and getting the church decorated.

We've been doing alot of planning for this already. The guest list is at 78 right now.

My shi-tzu had four puppies the other day and they are doing great. They grow so fast.

Be back later to check in.

It does prove to be work, for sure. And in the winter, those critters still expect to eat, rain, sleet, snow or shine..It wasnt too bad most times, unless it'd been raining alot or just thawed out from a good snow/ice storm..we had good ol' stick to it all red clay for the majority of our soil..
Tennessee has decent soil most places.It's 1 of my favorite places to drive across..fairly level on the interstates.Exit 145 to 168 is the area where Loretta Lynn's homestead are,on I-40; There's tstop with a diner that bears her name..used to be pretty good food; Dollywood is over by Gatlinburg, just east of Knoxville. There's also the Big red Barn Flea Market over about the 413 mile marker on 40; All places I've wanted to stop and see, but never have due to size..(70 ft long w/trailer though the flea market does have parking for 18's). I have stopped at the Loretta Lynn Diner. been many a year, and I dont get that far east anymore;

I wish I had gotten a picture of it. It was the weirdest thing to see.
We are planning a move to tennessee next year and plan to have a large garden then. I sure do miss that. We just want to have some chickens and a few pigs and maybe a goat or two. Nothing on the big scale. I cant handle that much anymore.

The fruit and vegetable garden were a royal pain in the summer, with the hoeing and weeding and watering. And then of course when it all, especially the corn, came off at one time, or over a 2 week period, and we had to pick it, clean it, cook it and cut it off the cob to freeze. Ditto the green beans, peas, peaches+ such; But boy, let me tell ya, in winter when you pulled it out and warmed it up or made ice cream or cobbler out of the peaches, man was that good!
And we usually gave about 1/4 away to neighbors and people the folks worked with..We didnt have room for it all in our freezers;
And of course, cleaning out the barn floor, after the goats had been in there all winter, helped with the soil; And the pen on the outside.. all by shovel into the pickup, then over to the garden+out of the pickup..I wouldnt last 15 mins. on that shovel now..
Those were the days..

Did you get a picture of your chicken/turkey?
I have two different breeds of ducks (Muscovys and Rowens)Two years ago, I had a duck with the rowen head and muscovy body. Muscovys do not make noise (they hiss not quack)like the Rowens do but Muscovys fly. This poor dude was an outcast--the Muscovys didn't want him--he sort of looked like a Rowen and the Rowens didn't want him because he hissed like a Muscovys. He disappeared--the coyotes got him--of course he was sterile, so no offspring.

Just found this seperate thread so thought I would post here.

Welcome to the team RH. I also miss the tastes of fresh milk and homegrown vegies. Theres nothing that compares.

I agree on the coyote issue. You should be able to protect your livestock and pets. Not to mention your families also. Never had issues with coyotes but had problems with raccoons.

I had a big farm a while back with chickens, geese, pigs, goats, rabbits, and turkeys and an occasional wild peacock. Im anxious to get back to farming.
I even used to have a weird mixed up turkey. It had a chicken body but the neck and head of a turkey.
The darndest looking thing. Anyone seen these before?

Not much else for now so be back later.

Thats too bad, because I knew a couple guys growing up who would get their hunting money for the deer tag with the furs they sold, but that market has dried up now due to various factors, including PETA and the obnoxious regulations placed on business. I also had a neighbor who's wife was a teacher at my school who raised chinchillas for the fur.. but now that market has also gone in the toilet.. Have a good weekend.

The answer to to how much China pollutes is an enormous amount, probably unmeasurable in reality due to the governments' control of access to everything; You have a point on the coyote thing..but dont forget Mr. susstein, the "regulatory Czar"' wants to ban all hunting..I wonder what these PETA folks will say when their dogs and cats start catching various nasty diseases from the over population of wild critters..Will they agree to restart the hunting and trapping,or just continue to think that humans are the scourge?
We have had war declared on us, the law abiding citizens, and in the case of the overwhelming majority of farmers..true stewards of the land and resources;
It is these same folks who wish to deny us the freedom to hunt and fish,who through their allies in the ELF,+ALF,who do the most damage to private property;
When the coyotes start killing our livestock, we do have the right to shoot them, but catching them in the act is the hard part. I dont know if anyone still traps up there,but sounds like they could do some serious business if there's any place to sell the fur to; Take care, let us know if anything changes, good or bad;

Catherine, you have my permission to spout off about political things. We all want our planet clean, and just wait until the Peta crowd starts losing there dogs and cats. the trouble is a loud minority of the PC people want to bring us down to the undelveleped countries. There, I fell better now.

I know I shouldn't spout off about political "doings" BUT
here in SD, we are overrun by coyotes. They kill our sheep, livestock and MY ducks. I use to have over 90 ducks, now I'm down to about 20. Our neighbor lost all his geese. And when we try to organize coyote hunts--PETA comes unglued!!! There has to be harmony among animals and people. If the coyote population gets out of control, it is not only not good for the coyote, as they compete against each other for food, but we lose the pheasant population and our livestock to the coyotes.
AND another thing: I am all for keeping our environment clean, don't get me wrong, but why are we the only country making our coal plants etc meet strict regulations, costing millions of dollars, when we are the only country "cleaning up" How much does China pollute the air??

Let me tell ya, the central valley of California looks like a wasteland. Whole orchards and vineyards dead from no water. And all for a overgrown sardine, aka the delta smelt! And here's the kicker, its not necessarily going to the cities..They just aren't giving it to the farmers and ranchers; And BTW, senate just confirmed the Regulatory CZAR,who thinks hunting should be banned and livestock and pets should be given attorneys to sue their owners..Let it flow into the ocean.. I will quote Charlie Brown,as he realizes Lucy just swiped the ball again..AAARRGGHH!!!

You can't take the farm out of a farm background. What an important occupation you have, we produce it and you haul it. I missed a trivia question the other day on how far produce travels until it gets to our table. I have become increasingly concerned about the California farmers not getting enough water for their crops because of endangered species and the cities needing it.

I live on a farm--always have. We raise holsteins, and have 80 ac of grass hay that I put up once a year.

Welcome to the team. It has been very quiet this summer, but I think the real farmers are all busy working very hard. They will probably be back in force when winter sets in.

My farming consists of trees (which I ignore) and two sheep to mow the blackberries. My dad who would have been 100 years old this year farmed in Kansas with teams of horses. I loved all the farming stories. I loved visiting our friends and relatives farms and I loved our tree farm and our little horse farm when I was growing up.

I know what you mean about tasteless produce and fresh from the cow milk. Visiting the dairy farm always meant a trip to the barn and a dipper of warm milk straight from the stainless steel tank. All those little dairies that dotted the countryside disappeared years ago. I miss the fields of Holsteins and the silos.

If you have not already done so, go check the blogs that our team leader writes. He has a wonderful sense of humor.

Greetings people.. I'm new to the team, 6 mo.at spark; I grew up on a farm in central Okla. between Stillwater, home of the ag. college and Pawnee, heart of The Pawnee Indian Nation. We had 69 acres, a couple dozen head of cattle, and same number of goats; Milked the goats, and I did most of the milking after about 12 years of age. All of it in High school ansd still miss the taste of real, fresh from the source milk. Also miss the fresh produce both fruits and veggies, we raised and canned or froze for use in the winter. For any who've had the fresh stuff, what passes for fresh, with few exceptions these days in the store tastes, well, like eating plastic! I am an otr driver who hauled this so called fresh fruit and veggies.. thats a subj. for another day.
It will prove interesting to see if we can generate some members.. Take care folks.. and remember, count your many blessings, name them one by one.. and see just how fortunate we are to live in this great land of ours.
