Travel is hard, you get out of a routine. I did not make it to the pool yesterday, and I am hoping to make it today. Just feel tired today, don't know why, but I do. Does walking in the grocery store count as exercise?

I think this was a motivating factor to shape up my goal setting. I've been doing that since late spring and I've caught a wave. I haven't been swimming this week, and I've gone a bit overboard on calories, so next week I plan to get back on track and hope on another wave. Aloha.

It's been a little while since the last post, and I'm doing better. I would classify this as a good week. I even ate out twice this week and I still feel good because those were just aberations. The Spring Break incidents were also just so out of the norm activities. The truth is, I'm a woman with a perfect BMI just 20 pounds away.

I take my exercise in a class called ‘swimming for fitness’ at my local community college. A couple of weeks ago, we took a week off for Spring Break. This coincided with a business trip that took me away from home. The combination of not having my regular workout and my regular kitchen made it a challenge to keep up (down) with my weight. I managed to get in a few hotel-room-body-weight-workouts and a nice walk. More importantly, I was very vigilant about what I ate. It wasn’t always the healthiest, but I was pleased with my choices.

Upon returning home, my husband started a new job. I wanted to be there for him on Monday night when he returned home, so I skipped my Monday swim. Also, since he is getting up earlier, I baked some muffins for him to eat on the commute. However, I managed to eat at least half of them. Then there were a few restaurant meals and a party and (surprise) I added two pounds to my frame.

It’s funny, but I think being out of my ordinary schedule set me up for a challenge when I returned home. I showed restraint when I was away from home, but I hadn’t planned anything particular when I returned. You know what they say, “If you fail to plan…” Also, I think there is only so much ‘external’ control one can manage. It must be something I ‘just do’ because it is my way. I’m working on getting into this mentality, but I spent so many years just going with the flow and grabbing what was available that it is tough to switch to mentality of thinking before acting….

Now, I am back on track where I was before Spring break. I am being careful about what I eat, which is where weight loss should focus. It’s not easy, but it’s what I do. Cakes and candy are now only once in a while foods, not every day foods. I stick to my calorie limits and I stick to my workout schedule. That’s just what I do.

Additional things I must do: eat more fiber and less fat. That means more vegetables and fruit, less red meat (this is tough), and less (none on most weeks) baked goods. I also need an extra serving of dairy (calcium). Of course I also will figure out how to get in ten minutes of strength training most days of the week. Sound good?
